Dual Link Algorithm for the Weighted Sum Rate Maximization in MIMO Interference Channels

MIMO interference network optimization is important for increasingly crowded wireless communication networks. We provide a new algorithm, named Dual Link algorithm, for the classic problem of weighted sum-rate maximization for MIMO multiaccess channels (MAC), broadcast channels (BC), and general MIMO interference channels with Gaussian input and a total power constraint. For MIMO MAC/BC, the algorithm finds optimal signals to achieve the capacity region boundary. For interference channels with Gaussian input assumption, two of the previous state-of-the-art algorithms are the WMMSE algorithm and the polite water-filling (PWF) algorithm. The WMMSE algorithm is provably convergent, while the PWF algorithm takes the advantage of the optimal transmit signal structure and converges the fastest in most situations but is not guaranteed to converge in all situations. It is highly desirable to design an algorithm that has the advantages of both algorithms. The dual link algorithm is such an algorithm. Its fast and guaranteed convergence is important to distributed implementation and time varying channels. In addition, the technique and a scaling invariance property used in the convergence proof may find applications in other non-convex problems in communication networks.

Pseudo-gradient Based Local Voltage Control in Distribution Networks

Voltage regulation is critical for power grids. However, it has become a much more challenging problem as distributed energy resources (DERs) such as photovoltaic and wind generators are increasingly deployed, causing rapid voltage fluctuations beyond what can be handled by the traditional voltage regulation methods. In this paper, motivated by two previously proposed inverter-based local volt/var control algorithms, we propose a pseudo-gradient based voltage control algorithm for the distribution network that does not constrain the allowable control functions and has low implementation complexity. We characterize the convergence of the proposed voltage control scheme, and compare it against the two previous algorithms in terms of the convergence condition as well as the convergence rate.

The Weighted Sum Rate Maximization in MIMO Interference Networks: The Minimax Lagrangian Duality and Algorithm

We take a new perspective on the weighted sum-rate maximization in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference networks, by formulating an equivalent max-min problem. This seemingly trivial reformulation has significant implications: the Lagrangian duality of the equivalent max-min problem provides an elegant way to establish the sum-rate duality between an interference network and its reciprocal when such a duality exists, and more importantly, suggests a novel iterative minimax algorithm for the weighted sum-rate maximization. Moreover, the design and convergence proof of the algorithm use only general convex analysis. They apply and extend to any max-min problems with similar structure, and thus provide a general class of algorithms for such optimization problems. This paper presents a promising step and lends hope for establishing a general framework based on the minimax Lagrangian duality for characterizing the weighted sum-rate and developing efficient algorithms for general MIMO interference networks.
