Investigation of the phase occurrence and H sorption properties in the Y33.33Ni66.67-xAlx (0 <= x <= 33.33) system

The Y33.33Ni66.67-xAlx system has been investigated in the region 0 <= x <= 33.3. The alloys were synthesized by induction melting. Phase occurrence and structural properties were studied by X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). The Al solubility in each phase has been investigated by XRD and Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA). The hydrogenation properties were characterized by pressure-composition isotherm measurements and kinetic curves at 473 K. For x = 0, the binary Y33.33Ni66.67 alloy crystallizes in the cubic superstructure with F4-3m space group and ordered Y vacancies. For 1.67 <= x <= 8.33, the alloys contain mainly Y(Ni, Al)2 and Y(Ni, Al)3 pseudobinary phases; while for 16.67 <= x <= 33.33 they are mainly formed by ternary line compounds Y3Ni6Al2, Y2Ni2Al and YNiAl. Contrary to the binary Y33.33Ni66.67, Y(Ni, Al)2 pseudo-binary compounds crystalize in C15 phase (space group Fd-3m ) with disordered Y vacancies. The solubility limit of Al in the C15 YNi2-yAly phase is y = 0.11 (i.e., x = 3.67). The Y(Ni, Al)3 phase changes from rhombohedral (PuNi3-type, R-3m) to hexagonal (CeNi3-type, P63/mmc) structure for x increasing from 5.00 to 6.67. Upon hydrogenation, the disproportion of C15 Y(Ni, Al)2 and losses of crystallinity of YNi and Y2Ni2Al are the main reasons causing capacity decay of Y33.33Ni66.67-xAlx (0 <= x <= 33.33) alloys upon cycling.

Numerical simulation of a coupled system of Maxwell equations and a gas dynamic model

It is known that both linear and nonlinear optical phenomena can be produced when the plasmon in metallic nanostructures are excited by the external electromagnetic waves. In this work, a coupled system of Maxwell equations and a gas dynamic model including a quantum pressure term is employed to simulate the plasmon dynamics of free electron fluid in different metallic nanostructures using a discontinuous Galerkin method in two dimensions. Numerical benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed numerical method can simulate both the high order harmonic generation and the nonlocal effect from metallic nanostructures. Based on the switch-on-and-off investigation, we can conclude that the quantum pressure term in gas dynamics is responsible for the bulk plasmon resonance. In addition, for the dielectric-filled nano-cavity, a coupled effective polarization model is further adopted to investigate the optical behavior of bound electrons. Concerning the numerical setting in this work, a strengthened influence of bound electrons on the generation of high order harmonic waves has been observed.

Graphene based functional devices: A short review

Graphene is an ideal 2D material system bridging electronic and photonic devices. It also breaks the fundamental speed and size limits by electronics and photonics, respectively. Graphene offers multiple functions of signal transmission, emission, modulation, and detection in a broad band, high speed, compact size, and low loss. Here, we have a brief view of graphene based functional devices at microwave, terahertz, and optical frequencies. Their fundamental physics and computational models were discussed as well.

Tongue image constitution recognition based on Complexity Perception method

Background and Object: In China, body constitution is highly related to physiological and pathological functions of human body and determines the tendency of the disease, which is of great importance for treatment in clinical medicine. Tongue diagnosis, as a key part of Traditional Chinese Medicine inspection, is an important way to recognize the type of constitution. In order to deploy tongue image constitution recognition system on non-invasive mobile device to achieve fast, efficient and accurate constitution recognition, an efficient method is required to deal with the challenge of this kind of complex environment. Methods: In this work, we perform the tongue area detection, tongue area calibration and constitution classification using methods which are based on deep convolutional neural network. Subject to the variation of inconstant environmental condition, the distribution of the picture is uneven, which has a bad effect on classification performance. To solve this problem, we propose a method based on the complexity of individual instances to divide dataset into two subsets and classify them separately, which is capable of improving classification accuracy. To evaluate the performance of our proposed method, we conduct experiments on three sizes of tongue datasets, in which deep convolutional neural network method and traditional digital image analysis method are respectively applied to extract features for tongue images. The proposed method is combined with the base classifier Softmax, SVM, and DecisionTree respectively. Results: As the experiments results shown, our proposed method improves the classification accuracy by 1.135% on average and achieves 59.99% constitution classification accuracy. Conclusions: Experimental results on three datasets show that our proposed method can effectively improve the classification accuracy of tongue constitution recognition.

The 2D Linearly Polarized Near-Field Focusing Based on Angularly Discretized Slot Arrays

A 2-D near-field focusing design is proposed based on the circular slot array waveguide structures, synthesized using the array-factor theory, and demonstrated by full-wave simulations. The principle of beam-focusing is extended to the 2-D angularly discretized configuration using regular center-fed linear slots arranged in a circular pattern. By the mirror image arrangement of the slots, a linearly polarized focus in the near-field of the antenna, with negligible cross-polarization is achieved. Its beam-focusing properties are discussed in details and demonstrated by simulations.

A novel fast solver for Poisson equation with the Neumann boundary condition

In this paper we present a novel fast method to solve Poisson equation in an arbitrary two dimensional region with Neumann boundary condition. The basic idea is to solve the original Poisson problem by a two-step procedure: the first one finds the electric displacement field $\mathbf{D}$ and the second one involves the solution of potential $\phi$. The first step exploits loop-tree decomposition technique that has been applied widely in integral equations within the computational electromagnetics (CEM) community. We expand the electric displacement field in terms of a tree basis. Then, coefficients of the tree basis can be found by the fast tree solver in O(N) operations. Such obtained solution, however, fails to expand the exact field because the tree basis is not completely curl free. Despite of this, the accurate field could be retrieved by carrying out a procedure of divergence free field removal. Subsequently, potential distribution $\phi$ can be found rapidly at the second stage with another fast approach of O(N) complexity. As a result, the method dramatically reduces solution time comparing with traditional FEM with iterative method. Numerical examples including electrostatic simulations are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
