Ordered Loop Current States in Bilayer Graphene

While single-layer graphene shows extraordinary phenomena which are stable against electronic interactions, the non-interacting state of bilayer graphene is unstable to infinitesimal interactions leading to one of many possible exotic states. Indeed a gapped state is found in experiments but none of the states proposed so far can provide full accounts of its properties. Here we show that a magnetoelectric (ME) state is consistent with the experimental observations. This state breaks time-reversal symmetry through a pair of spontaneously generated current loops in each layer, and has odd-parity with respect to the two layers. We also suggest further experiments to check whether the ME state is indeed the gapped state found in experiments.

Tailoring Magnetism of Perpendicularly Magnetized MnxGa Epitaxial Films on GaAs for Practical Applications

MnxGa films with high perpendicular anisotropy, coercivity and energy product have great application potential in ultrahigh-density perpendicular recording, permanent magnets, spin-transfer-torque memory and oscillators, magneto-resistance sensors and ferromagnetic metal/semiconductor heterostructure devices. Here we present a comprehensive diagram of effective magnetism-tailoring of perpendicularly magnetized MnxGa films grown on III-V semiconductor GaAs by using molecular-beam epitaxy for the first time, by systematically investigating the wide-range composition and detailed post-growth annealing effects. We show that the (001)-orientated MnxGa films with L10 or D022 ordering could be crystallized on GaAs in a very wide composition range from x=0.76 to 2.6. L10-ordered MnxGa films show robust magnetization, high remanent ratio, giant perpendicular anisotropy, high intrinsic and extrinsic coercivity, and large energy product, which make this kind of material favorable for perpendicular magnetic recording, high-performance spintronic devices and permanent magnet applications. In contrast, D022-ordered films exhibit lower perpendicular anisotropy and weaker magnetism. Post-growth annealing MnxGa films studies reveal high thermal-stability up to 450 oC, and effective tailoring of magnetic properties can be realized by prolonging annealing at 450 oC. These results would be helpful for understanding this kind of material and designing new spintronic devices for specific practical applications.

Multifunctional L10-Mn1.5Ga films with ultrahigh coercivity, giant perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy and large magnetic energy product

We present the fascinating magnetic properties in homogenous noble-metal-free and rare-earth-free L10-Mn1.5Ga epitaxial films on GaAs (001), including ultrahigh perpendicular coercivity remarkably tunable from 8.1 to 42.8 kOe, giant perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy with a maximum of 22.9 Merg/cc, easily controllable magnetization from 27.3 to 270.5 emu/cc, excellent squareness exceeding 0.94 and large magnetic energy product up to 2.6 MGOe. These magnificent room-temperature magnetic characteristics make our L10-Mn1.5Ga films multifunctional as outstanding and cost-effective alternative for not only perpendicular magnetic recording bits with areal density over 30 Tb inch-2 and thermal stability over 60 years, but variety of novel devices with high magnetic-noise immunity and thermal stability like spin-torque MRAMs and oscillators pillars below 5 nm in dimension, and giant magnetoresistance sensors able to measure high fileds up to 42 kOe . Moreover, this kind of materials can also be expected as permanent magnets for replacing the expensive rare-earth magnets widely used today.

Using M_T2 to Distinguish Dark Matter Stabilization Symmetries

We examine the potential of using colliders to distinguish models with parity (Z_2) stabilized dark matter (DM) from models in which the DM is stabilized by other symmetries, taking the latter to be a Z_3 symmetry for illustration. The key observation is that a heavier mother particle charged under a Z_3 stabilization symmetry can decay into one or two DM particles along with Standard Model (SM) particles. This can be contrasted with the decay of a mother particle charged under a parity symmetry; typically, only one DM particle appears in the decay chain. In arXiv:1003.0899, some of us studied the distributions of visible invariant mass from the decay of a single such mother particle in order to highlight the resulting distinctive signatures of Z_3 symmetry versus parity symmetry stabilized dark matter candidates. We now describe a complementary study which focuses on decay chains of the two mother particles which are necessarily present in these events. We also include in our analyss the missing energy/momentum in the event. For the Z_3 symmetry stabilized mothers, the resulting inclusive final state can have two, three or four DM particles. In contrast, models with Z_2 symmetry can have only two. We show that the shapes and edges of the distribution of M_T2-type variables, along with ratio of the visible momentum/energy on the two sides of the event, are powerful in distinguishing these different scenarios.

Superconducting pairing of interacting electrons: implications from the two-impurity Anderson model

We study the non-local superconducting pairing of two interacting Anderson impurities, which has an instability near the quantum critical point from the competition between the Kondo effect and an antiferromagnetic inter-impurity spin exchange interaction. As revealed by the dynamics over the whole energy range, the superconducting pairing fluctuations acquire considerable strength from an energy scale much higher than the characteristic spin fluctuation scale while the low energy behaviors follow those of the staggered spin susceptibility. We argue that the glue to the superconducting pairing is not the spin fluctuations, but rather the effective Coulomb interaction. On the other hand, critical spin fluctuations in the vicinity of quantum criticality are also crucial to a superconducting pairing instability, by preventing a Fermi liquid fixed point being reached to keep the superconducting pairing fluctuations finite at low energies. A superconducting order, to reduce the accumulated entropy carried by the critical degrees of freedom, may arise favorably from this instability.

Correlations between two Anderson impurities

We study the intersite correlation effects on the Kondo dynamics of two Anderson impurities. Two characteristic energy scales are present associated with the splitting of the uniform and staggered spin susceptibilities. The high energy scale has similar properties as the coherence scale in heavy fermion materials while the low energy scale characterizes the competing orders between Kondo singlet state and inter-impurity singlet state. A singlet superconductivity instability is found near the quantum critical point and is associated with the singular staggered spin susceptibility.

Coherence scale of coupled Anderson impurities

For two coupled Anderson impurities, two energy scales are present to characterize the evolution from local moment state of the impurities to either of the inter-impurity singlet or the Kondo singlet ground states. The high energy scale is found to deviate from the single-ion Kondo temperature and rather scales as Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction when it becomes dominant. We find that the scaling behavior and the associated physical properties of this scale are consistent with those of a coherence scale defined in heavy fermion systems.

Magnetic field induced quantum phase transitions in the two-impurity Anderson model

In the two-impurity Anderson model, the inter-impurity spin exchange interaction favors a spin singlet state between two impurities leading to the breakdown of the Kondo effect. We show that a local uniform magnetic field can delocalize the quasiparticles to restore the Kondo resonance. This transition is found to be continuous, accompanied by not only the divergence of the staggered (antiferromagnetic) susceptibility, but also the divergence of the uniform spin susceptibility. This may imply that the magnetic field induced quantum phase transitions in Kondo systems are in favor of the local critical type.

Entropy accumulation near quantum critical points: effects beyond hyperscaling

Entropy accumulation near a quantum critical point was expected based on general scaling arguments, and has recently been explicitly observed. We explore this issue further in two canonical models for quantum criticality, with particular attention paid to the potential effects beyond hyperscaling. In the case of a one-dimensional transverse field Ising model, we derive the specific scaling form of the free energy. It follows from this scaling form that the singular temperature dependence at the critical field has a vanishing prefactor but the singular field dependence at zero temperature is realized. For the spin-density-wave model above its upper critical dimension, we show that the dangerously irrelevant quartic coupling comes into the free energy in a delicate way but in the end yields only subleading contributions beyond hyperscaling. We conclude that entropy accumulation near quantum critical point is a robust property of both models.

Higgs Production from Gluon Fusion in Warped Extra Dimensions

We present an analysis of the loop-induced couplings of the Higgs boson to the massless gauge fields (gluons and photons) in the warped extra dimension models where all Standard Model fields propagate in the bulk. We show that in such models corrections to the hgg and $hγγ$ couplings are potentially very large. These corrections can lead to generically sizable deviations in the production and decay rates of the Higgs boson, even when the new physics states lie beyond the direct reach of the LHC.

LHC Signals for Coset Electroweak Gauge Bosons in Warped/Composite PGB Higgs Models

The framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in it is a very well-motivated extension of the SM since it can address both the Planck-weak and flavor hierarchy problems of the SM. Within this framework, solution to the little hierarchy problem motivates extending the SM electroweak (EW) 5D gauge symmetry in such a way that its breakdown to the SM delivers the SM Higgs boson. We study signals at the large hadron collider (LHC) for the extra EW (called coset) gauge bosons, a fundamental ingredient of this framework. The coset gauge bosons, due to their unique EW gauge quantum numbers [doublets of SU(2)_L], do not couple at leading order to two SM particles. We find that, using the associated production of the charged coset gauge bosons via their coupling to SM bottom quark and a (light) KK top quark, the LHC can have a 3σreach of \sim 2 (2.6) TeV for the coset gauge boson masses with \sim 100 (1000) fb^{-1} luminosity. Since current theoretical framework(s) suggest an {\em indirect} lower limit on coset gauge boson masses of >3 TeV, luminosity or energy upgrade of LHC is likely to be crucial in observing these states.

Universal Thermoelectric Effect of Dirac Fermions in Graphene

We numerically study the thermoelectric transports of Dirac fermions in graphene in the presence of a strong magnetic field and disorder. We find that the thermoelectric transport coefficients demonstrate universal behavior depending on the ratio between the temperature and the width of the disorder-broadened Landau levels(LLs). The transverse thermoelectric conductivity $α_{xy}$ reaches a universal quantum value at the center of each LL in the high temperature regime, and it has a linear temperature dependence at low temperatures. The calculated Nernst signal has a peak at the central LL with heights of the order of $k_B/e$, and changes sign near other LLs, while the thermopower has an opposite behavior, in good agreement with experimental data. The validity of the generalized Mott relation between the thermoelectric and electrical transport coefficients is verified in a wide range of temperatures.

Higgs Mediated FCNC's in Warped Extra Dimensions

In the context of a warped extra-dimension with Standard Model fields in the bulk, we obtain the general flavor structure of the Higgs couplings to fermions. These couplings will be generically misaligned with respect to the fermion mass matrix, producing large and potentially dangerous flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC's). As recently pointed out in [arXiv:0906.1542], a similar effect is expected from the point of view of a composite Higgs sector, which corresponds to a 4D theory dual to the 5D setup by the AdS-CFT correspondence. We also point out that the effect is independent of the geographical nature of the Higgs (bulk or brane localized), and specifically that it does not go away as the Higgs is pushed towards the IR boundary. The FCNC's mediated by a light enough Higgs (specially their contribution to $ε_K$) could become of comparable size as the ones coming from the exchange of Kaluza-Klein (KK) gluons. Moreover, both sources of flavor violation are complementary since they have inverse dependence on the 5D Yukawa couplings, such that we cannot decouple the flavor violation effects by increasing or decreasing these couplings. We also find that for KK scales of a few TeV, the Higgs couplings to third generation fermions could experience suppressions of up to 40% while the rest of diagonal couplings would suffer much milder corrections. Potential LHC signatures like the Higgs flavor violating decays $h\toμτ$ or $h\to tc$, or the exotic top decay channel $t\to c h$, are finally addressed.

Radion Mediated Flavor Changing Neutral Currents

In the context of a warped extra-dimension with Standard Model fields in the bulk, we obtain the general flavor structure of the Radion couplings to fermions and show that the result is independent on the particular nature of the Higgs mechanism (bulk or brane localized). These couplings will be generically misaligned with respect to the fermion mass matrix when the fermion bulk mass parameters are not all degenerate. When the Radion is light enough, the generic size of these tree-level flavor changing couplings will be strongly constrained by the experimental bounds on $ΔF=2$ processes. At the LHC the possibility of a heavier Radion decaying into top and charm quarks is then considered as a promising signal to probe the flavor structure of both the Radion sector and the whole scenario.

Flavor Violation Tests of Warped/Composite SM in the Two-Site Approach

We study flavor violation in the quark sector in a purely 4D, two-site effective field theory description of the Standard Model and just their first Kaluza-Klein excitations from a warped extra dimension. The warped 5D framework can provide solutions to both the Planck-weak and flavor hierarchies of the SM. It is also related (via the AdS/CFT correspondence) to partial compositeness of the SM. We focus on the dominant contributions in the two-site model to two observables which we argue provide the strongest flavor constraints, namely, epsilon_K and BR(b -> s gamma), where contributions in the two-site model occur at tree and loop-level, respectively. In particular, we demonstrate that a "tension" exists between these two observables in the sense that they have opposite dependence on composite site Yukawa couplings, making it difficult to decouple flavor-violating effects using this parameter. We choose the size of the composite site QCD coupling based on the relation of the two-site model to the 5D model (addressing the Planck-weak hierarchy), where we match the 5D QCD coupling to the 4D coupling at the loop-level and assuming negligible tree-level brane-localized kinetic terms. We estimate that a larger size of the 5D gauge coupling is constrained by the requirement of 5D perturbativity. We find that \sim O(5) TeV mass scale for the new particles in the two-site model can then be consistent with both observables. We also compare our analysis of epsilon_K in the two-site model to that in 5D models, including both the cases of a brane-localized and bulk Higgs.

Universality of the single-particle spectra of cuprate superconductors

All the available data for the dispersion and linewidth of the single-particle spectra above the superconducting gap and the pseudogap in metallic cuprates for any doping has universal features. The linewidth is linear in energy below a scale $ω_c$ and constant above. The cusp in the linewidth at $ω_c$ mandates, due to causality, a "waterfall", i.e., a vertical feature in the dispersion. These features are predicted by a recent microscopic theory. We find that all data can be quantitatively fitted by the theory with a coupling constant $λ_0$ and an upper cutoff at $ω_c$ which vary by less than 50% among the different cuprates and for varying dopings. The microscopic theory also gives these values to within factors of O(2).

Topological Transition in the Fermi Surface of Cuprate Superconductors in the Pseudogap Regime

The angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies on cuprates in the pseudogap region reveal an extraordinary topological transition in which the ground state changes from one with a normal Fermi surface to one with four Fermi points. Such a state is not possible without some symmetry breaking, which allows interference between one-particle basis states that is normally forbidden. We also show that the experimental results are quantitatively given without any free parameters by a theory and discuss the implications of the results.

Coherence in the Two Kondo Impurity Problem

We show through a perturbative and an exact calculation using Wilson's renormalization methods that in the problem of two interacting Kondo impurities, on-site potential scattering generates a quantum-tunneling between the two impurities through a marginally relevant operator. The magnitude of this tunneling $V_{12}$ depends on the spin-correlation between the two impurities. For exchange interactions between the moments comparable to the Kondo energy $T_K$, $V_{12}$ is typically much larger than $T_K$. This implies that the heavy-fermion mass in this interesting range is determined by $V_{12}$ rather than $T_K$. The importance of these results for experiments in coupled Kondo dots is also pointed out.
