Toward a Gravity Dual of Glueball Inflation

We summarize and extend our work on nonsupersymmetric solutions of a 5d consistent truncation of type IIB supergravity, that is relevant for gauge/gravity duality. The fields in this 5d theory are the five-dimensional metric and a set of scalars. We find solutions of the 5d equations of motion, which represent dS_4 foliations over the fifth (radial) dimension. In each solution at least one scalar has a nontrivial radial profile. These scalars are interpreted as glueballs in the dual gauge theory, living in 4d de Sitter space. We explain why this lays a foundation for building gravity duals of glueball inflation models.

On the Stability of D7 - anti-D7 Probes in Near-conformal Backgrounds

We investigate the perturbative stability of a nonsupersymmetric D7 - anti-D7 brane embedding in a particular class of type IIB backgrounds. These backgrounds are the gravitational duals of certain strongly-coupled gauge theories, that exhibit a nearly conformal regime (known as a walking regime). Previous studies in the literature have led to conflicting results as to whether the spectrum of fluctuations around the flavor D7 - anti-D7 embedding has a tachyonic mode or not. Here we reconsider the problem with a new analytical method and recover the previously obtained numerical results. We also point out that the earlier treatments relied on a coordinate system, in which it was not possible to take into account fluctuations of the point of confluence of the D7 - anti-D7 branes. Using an improved coordinate system, we confirm the presence of a normalizable tachyonic mode in this model, in agreement with the numerical calculations. Finally, we comment on the possibility of turning on worldvolume flux to stabilize the probe branes configuration.

Stability of D-brane embeddings in nontrivial backgrounds

We propose a new analytical method for determining whether nonsupersymmetric probe branes embedded in nontrivial backgrounds are perturbatively stable or not. The method is based on a relationship between zero mass solutions of the relevant DBI equations of motion and tachyonic solutions. Furthermore, due to the above relation, the question, of whether a classical solution is stable or not, can be answered simply by studying the derivatives of that solution with respect to its integration constants. Finally, we illustrate the efficiency of this method by applying it to several interesting examples.

Glueball Spectrum in a Gauge Theory with Two Dynamical Scales

We investigate the glueball spectrum of a strongly coupled gauge theory with two dynamical scales. The main tool is the use of the gauge/gravity duality. The model we study has a known graviational dual, which arises from a type IIB D-brane configuration. It exhibits two dynamical scales, separated by a nearly conformal region. Thus, it is of great interest for the study of walking in gauge theories. By using the gravitational description, we are able to compute analytically the glueball mass spectrum in a certain range of the parameter space of the theory. Within that range, we do not find a light state that could be associated with a slight breaking of conformal invariance. Finally, we show that in this model there can be an order of magnitude hierarchy between the scale of confinement, given by the lowest glueball mass, and the scale of chiral symmetry breaking, determined by the lowest vector-meson mass.

Scalar Mesons in Holographic Walking Technicolor

We study the spectrum of scalar mesons in the holographic dual of walking technicolor, obtained by embedding D7 - anti-D7 probe branes in a certain type IIB background. The scalar mesons arise from fluctuations of the probe techniflavour branes and complement the (axial-)vector meson spectra that we investigated in earlier work. By explicitly finding the spectrum of scalar masses, we show that the nonsupersymmetric D7 - anti-D7 embedding is stable with respect to such fluctuations. Interestingly, it turns out that the mass splitting between the scalar and vector meson spectra is of subleading order in a small parameter expansion. It is noteworthy that this near-degeneracy may not be entirely due to a small amount of supersymmetry breaking and thus could indicate the presence of some other (approximate) symmetry in the problem.

Holographic Walking Technicolor from D-branes

We investigate a model of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking via a dual gravitational description. The gravity dual is obtained by embedding a D7 - anti-D7 pair of branes into a type IIB background that is dual to a walking gauge theory. We develop further a previous study of this model. In particular, we show that there is a nontrivial relation that needs to be satisfied in order for axial-vector modes to exist. Furthermore, we compute explicitly the electroweak S parameter. The result is positive-definite and, as was to be expected, much smaller than in earlier QCD-like D-brane constructions. We also find the masses and decay constants of the vector and axial-vector mesons in this model. This allows us to obtain another estimate for S by summing the contributions of the discrete states. It is noteworthy that, in contrast to previous holographic studies, the sum of the first several lowest-lying states does give a very good approximation to the full answer.

Quantum Corrections to Heterotic Moduli Potentials

In a recent paper, we derived the leading alpha' corrections to the Kahler potentials for moduli in (0,2) heterotic compactifications. In the same spirit as the LARGE volume stabilization scenario for type IIB orientifolds, we examine whether these quantum corrections, together with a combination of tree-level and non-perturbative superpotentials, are sufficient to stabilize the overall volume modulus at large values. This is not a priori obvious, since the corrections we found are of a lower order than those used in the type IIB setting. Nevertheless, we find that stabilizing the volume at (exponentially) large values may be possible (under certain conditions) in these heterotic backgrounds.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from Gauge/Gravity Duality

We use the gauge/gravity duality to study a model of walking technicolor. The latter is a phenomenologically promising framework for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. A traditional problem for technicolor models has been the need to address gauge theories at strong coupling. Recent developments in gauge/gravity duality provide a powerful tool for handling this problem. First, we revisit previously considered holographic models of QCD-like technicolor from D-branes. In particular, we develop analytical understanding of earlier numerical computations of the Peskin-Takeuchi S-parameter. Then we apply this method to the investigation of a model of walking technicolor, obtained by embedding D7 - anti-D7 probe branes in a recently discovered type IIB background dual to walking behaviour. As a necessary step, we also show that there is an embedding of the techniflavor branes, that realizes chiral symmetry breaking. Finally, we show that the divergences that appear in the S-parameter can be removed by using holographic renormalization.

Heterotic Flux Attractors

We find attractor equations describing moduli stabilization for heterotic compactifications with generic SU(3)-structure. Complex structure and Kähler moduli are treated on equal footing by using SU(3)xSU(3)-structure at intermediate steps. All independent vacuum data, including VEVs of the stabilized moduli, is encoded in a pair of generating functions that depend on fluxes alone. We work out an explicit example that illustrates our methods.

The Leading Quantum Corrections to Stringy Kahler Potentials

The structure of stringy quantum corrections to four-dimensional effective theories is particularly interesting for string phenomenology and attempts to stabilize moduli. We consider the heterotic string compactified on a Calabi-Yau space. For this case, we compute the leading corrections to the kinetic terms of moduli fields. The structure of these corrections is largely dictated by the underlying higher-dimensional extended supersymmetry. We find corrections generically of order (alpha')^2 rather than of order (alpha')^3 found in type II compactifications or heterotic compactifications with the standard embedding. We explore the implications of these corrections for breaking no-scale structure.

LARGE Volume String Compactifications at Finite Temperature

We present a detailed study of the finite-temperature behaviour of the LARGE Volume type IIB flux compactifications. We show that certain moduli can thermalise at high temperatures. Despite that, their contribution to the finite-temperature effective potential is always negligible and the latter has a runaway behaviour. We compute the maximal temperature $T_{max}$, above which the internal space decompactifies, as well as the temperature $T_*$, that is reached after the decay of the heaviest moduli. The natural constraint $T_*<T_{max}$ implies a lower bound on the allowed values of the internal volume $\mathcal{V}$. We find that this restriction rules out a significant range of values corresponding to smaller volumes of the order $\mathcal{V}\sim 10^{4}l_s^6$, which lead to standard GUT theories. Instead, the bound favours values of the order $\mathcal{V}\sim 10^{15}l_s^6$, which lead to TeV scale SUSY desirable for solving the hierarchy problem. Moreover, our result favours low-energy inflationary scenarios with density perturbations generated by a field, which is not the inflaton. In such a scenario, one could achieve both inflation and TeV-scale SUSY, although gravity waves would not be observable. Finally, we pose a two-fold challenge for the solution of the cosmological moduli problem. First, we show that the heavy moduli decay before they can begin to dominate the energy density of the Universe. Hence they are not able to dilute any unwanted relics. And second, we argue that, in order to obtain thermal inflation in the closed string moduli sector, one needs to go beyond the present EFT description.

Flux Vacua Attractors in Type II on SU(3)xSU(3) Structure

We summarize and extend our work on flux vacua attractors in generalized compactifications. After reviewing the attractor equations for the heterotic string on SU(3) structure manifolds, we study attractors for N=1 vacua in type IIA/B on SU(3)xSU(3) structure spaces. In the case of vanishing RR flux, we find attractor equations that encode Minkowski vacua only (and which correct a previous normalization error). In addition to our previous considerations, here we also discuss the case of nonzero RR flux and the possibility of attractors for AdS vacua.

Flux Vacua Attractors and Generalized Compactifications

We investigate whether there are attractor equations for N=1 flux vacua in generalized compactifications. We fill a gap in the existing literature by verifying analytically that the recently proposed susy attractors, for type IIB CY(3) orientifold compactifications with flux, do give supersymmetric minima of the relevant scalar potential. Furthermore, our considerations clarify various confusions about existing proposals for generalization of the flux vacua attractors to non-Kähler compactifications. We explore different possibilities for generalization and find attractor equations for N=1 Minkowski vacua only both for the heterotic string on SU(3) structure manifolds and for type IIA/B on SU(3)xSU(3) structure spaces.

O'KKLT at Finite Temperature

We study whether finite temperature corrections decompactify the internal space in KKLT compactifications with an uplifting sector given by a system that exhibits metastable dynamical supersymmetry breaking. More precisely, we calculate the one-loop temperature corrections to the effective potential of the volume modulus in the KKLT model coupled to the quantum corrected O'Raifeartaigh model. We prove that for the original KKLT model, namely with one exponent in the non-perturbative superpotential, the finite temperature potential is runaway when at zero temperature there is a dS minimum. On the other hand, for a non-perturbative superpotential of the race-track type with two exponents, we demonstrate that the temperature-dependent part of the effective potential can have local minima at finite field vevs. However, rather unexpectedly, it turns out that these minima do not affect the structure of the full effective potential and so the volume modulus is stabilized at the local minimum of the zero temperature potential for the whole range of validity of the supergravity approximation.

Finite Temperature Behaviour of O'KKLT Model

We summarize our work on the O'Raifeartaigh uplifted KKLT model at finite temperature. We study the system for parameter values for which the zero temperature potential for the volume modulus has a dS minimum. The temperature-dependent part of the effective potential has a runaway behaviour for one exponent in the superpotential, whereas it can have local minima at finite field vevs for two exponents in the superpotential. However, it turns out that, despite the presence of those minima, the zero temperature dS vacuum is not destabilized by thermal corrections within the whole range of validity of our approximations.

Metastable SUSY Breaking and Supergravity at Finite Temperature

We study how coupling to supergravity affects the phase structure of a system exhibiting dynamical supersymmetry breaking in a metastable vacuum. More precisely, we consider the Seiberg dual of SQCD coupled to supergravity at finite temperature. We show that the gravitational interactions decrease the critical temperature for the second order phase transition in the quark direction, that is also present in the global case. Furthermore, we find that, due to supergravity, a new second order phase transition occurs in the meson direction, whenever there is a nonvanishing constant term in the superpotential. Notably, this phase transition is a necessary condition for the fields to roll, as the system cools down, towards the metastable susy breaking vacuum, because of the supergravity-induced shift of the metastable minimum away from zero meson vevs. Finally, we comment on the phase structure of the KKLT model with uplifting sector given by the Seiberg dual of SQCD.

Five-brane Instantons vs Flux-induced Gauging of Isometries

In five-dimensional heterotic M-theory there is necessarily nonzero background flux, which leads to gauging of an isometry of the universal hypermultiplet moduli space. This isometry, however, is poised to be broken by M5-brane instanton effects. We show that, similarly to string theory, the background flux allows only brane instantons that preserve the above isometry. The zero-mode counting for the M5 instantons is related to the number of solutions of the Dirac equation on their worldvolume. We investigate that equation in the presence of generic background flux and also, in a particular case, with nonzero worldvolume flux.

Flux Superpotential in Heterotic M-theory

We derive the most general flux-induced superpotential for N=1 M-theory compactifications on seven-dimensional manifolds with SU(3) structure. Imposing the appropriate boundary conditions, this result applies for heterotic M-theory. It is crucial for the latter to consider SU(3) and not G_2 group structure on the seven-dimensional internal space. For a particular background that differs from CY(3) x S^1/Z_2 only by warp factors, we investigate the flux-generated scalar potential as a function of the orbifold length. We find a positive cosmological constant minimum, however at an undesirably large value of this length. Hence the flux superpotential alone is not enough to stabilize the orbifold length at a de Sitter vacuum. But it does modify substantially the interplay between the previously studied non-perturbative effects, possibly reducing the significance of open membrane instantons while underlining the importance of gaugino condensation.
