Quantitative asymptotics for polynomial patterns in the primes

We prove quantitative estimates for averages of the von Mangoldt and M\"obius functions along polynomial progressions $n+P_1(m),\ldots, n+P_k(m)$ for a large class of polynomials $P_i$. The error terms obtained save an arbitrary power of logarithm, matching the classical Siegel--Walfisz error term. These results give the first quantitative bounds for the Tao--Ziegler polynomial patterns in the primes result. The proofs are based on a quantitative generalised von Neumann theorem of Peluse, a recent result of Leng on strong bounds for the Gowers uniformity of the primes, and analysis of a ``Siegel model'' for the von Mangoldt function along polynomial progressions.

Smooth numbers are orthogonal to nilsequences

The aim of this paper is to study distributional properties of integers without large or small prime factors. Define an integer to be $[y',y]$-smooth if all of its prime factors belong to the interval $[y',y]$. We identify suitable weights $g_{[y',y]}(n)$ for the characteristic function of $[y',y]$-smooth numbers that allow us to establish strong asymptotic results on their distribution in short arithmetic progressions. Building on these equidistribution properties, we show that (a $W$-tricked version of) the function $g_{[y',y]}(n) - 1$ is orthogonal to nilsequences. Our results apply in the almost optimal range $(\log N)^{K} < y \leq N$ of the smoothness parameter $y$, where $K \geq 2$ is sufficiently large, and to any $y' < \min(\sqrt{y}, (\log N)^c)$. As a first application, we establish for any $y> N^{1/\sqrt{\log_9 N}}$ asymptotic results on the frequency with which an arbitrary finite complexity system of shifted linear forms $\psi_j (\mathbf{n}) + a_j \in \mathbb{Z}[n_1, \dots, n_s]$, $1 \leq j \leq r$, simultaneously takes $[y',y]$-smooth values as the $n_i$ vary over integers below $N$.

Frobenian multiplicative functions and rational points in fibrations

We consider the problem of counting the number of varieties in a family over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a rational point. We obtain lower bounds for this counting problem for some families over $\mathbb{P}^1$, even if the Hasse principle fails. We also obtain sharp results for some multinorm equations and for specialisations of certain Brauer group elements on higher dimensional projective spaces, where we answer some cases of a question of Serre. Our techniques come from arithmetic geometry and additive combinatorics.

Generalized Fourier coefficients of multiplicative functions

We introduce and analyse a general class of not necessarily bounded multiplicative functions, examples of which include the function $n \mapsto δ^{ω(n)}$, where $δ\neq 0$ and where $ω$ counts the number of distinct prime factors of $n$, as well as the function $n \mapsto |λ_f(n)|$, where $λ_f(n)$ denotes the Fourier coefficients of a primitive holomorphic cusp form. For this class of functions we show that after applying a `$W$-trick' their elements become orthogonal to polynomial nilsequences. The resulting functions therefore have small uniformity norms of all orders by the Green--Tao--Ziegler inverse theorem, a consequence that will be used in a separate paper in order to asymptotically evaluate linear correlations of multiplicative functions from our class. Our result generalises work of Green and Tao on the Möbius function.

Norm forms for arbitrary number fields as products of linear polynomials

Let K/Q be a field extension of finite degree and let P(t) be a polynomial over Q that splits into linear factors over Q. We show that any smooth model of the affine variety defined by the equation N_{K/Q} (k) = P(t) satisfies the Hasse principle and weak approximation whenever the Brauer-Manin obstruction is empty. Our proof is based on a combination of methods from additive combinatorics due to Green-Tao and Green-Tao-Ziegler, together with an application of the descent theory of Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc.

A consequence of the factorisation theorem for polynomial orbits on nilmanifolds

We discuss a consequence of Green and Tao's factorisation theorem for polynomial orbits on nilmanifolds, adjusted to the requirements of certain arithmetic applications. More precisely, we prove a generalisation of Theorem 16.4, Acta Arith. 154 (2012), 235-306, by slightly rearranging its proof. The thus achieved strengthening of the result removes an oversight in the above-cited paper which resulted from the previously too weak conclusion. Since this type of result proved essential for further applications, we take the opportunity to discuss it in more detail.

On the square-free representation function of a norm form and nilsequences

We show that the restriction to square-free numbers of the representation function attached to a norm form does not correlate with nilsequences. By combining this result with previous work of Browning and the author, we obtain an application that is used in recent work of Harpaz and Wittenberg on the fibration method for rational points.

Rational points on pencils of conics and quadrics with many degenerate fibres

For any pencil of conics or higher-dimensional quadrics over the rationals, with all degenerate fibres defined over the rationals, we show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction controls weak approximation. The proof is based on the Hasse principle and weak approximation for some special intersections of quadrics, which is a consequence of recent advances in additive combinatorics.

Correlations of the divisor function

In this paper we study linear correlations of the divisor function tau(n) = sum_{d|n} 1 using methods developed by Green and Tao. For example, we obtain an asymptotic for sum_{n,d} tau(n) tau(n+d) ... tau(n+ (k-1)d).
