A Novel PML-type Technique for Acoustic Scattering Problems based on A Real Coordinate Transformation

It is known that any {\em real coordinate transformation} (RCT) to compress waves in an unbounded domain into a bounded domain results in infinite oscillations that cannot be resolved by any grid-based method. In this paper, we intend to show that it is viable if the outgoing waves are compressed along the radial direction and the resulting oscillatory pattern is extracted explicitly. We therefore construct a perfectly matched layer (PML)-type technique for domain reduction of wave scattering problems using RCT, termed as real compressed layer (RCL). Different from all existing approaches, the RCL technique has two features: (i) the RCL-equation only involves real-valued coefficients, which is more desirable for computation and analysis; and (ii) the layer is not ``artificial'' in the sense that the computed field in the layer can recover the outgoing wave of the original scattering problem in the unbounded domain. Here we demonstrate the essential idea and performance of the RCL for the two-dimensional Helmholtz problem with a bounded scatterer, but this technique can be extended to three dimensions in a similar setting.

Error analysis of a first-order IMEX scheme for the logarithmic Schrödinger equation

The logarithmic Schrödinger equation (LogSE) has a logarithmic nonlinearity $f(u)=u\ln |u|^2$ that is not differentiable at $u=0.$ Compared with its counterpart with a regular nonlinear term, it possesses richer and unusual dynamics, though the low regularity of the nonlinearity brings about significant challenges in both analysis and computation. Among very limited numerical studies, the semi-implicit regularized method via regularising $f(u)$ as $ u^{\varepsilon}\ln ({\varepsilon}+ |u^{\varepsilon}|)^2$ to overcome the blowup of $\ln |u|^2$ at $u=0$ has been investigated recently in literature. With the understanding of $f(0)=0,$ we analyze the non-regularized first-order Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) scheme for the LogSE. We introduce some new tools for the error analysis that include the characterization of the Hölder continuity of the logarithmic term, and a nonlinear Grönwall's inequality. We provide ample numerical results to demonstrate the expected convergence. We position this work as the first one to study the direct linearized scheme for the LogSE as far as we can tell.

An Efficient Spectral Trust-Region Deflation Method for Multiple Solutions

It is quite common that a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) admits multiple distinct solutions and each solution may carry a unique physical meaning. One typical approach for finding multiple solutions is to use the Newton method with different initial guesses that ideally fall into the basins of attraction confining the solutions. In this paper, we propose a fast and accurate numerical method for multiple solutions comprised of three ingredients: (i) a well-designed spectral-Galerkin discretization of the underlying PDE leading to a nonlinear algebraic system (NLAS) with multiple solutions; (ii) an effective deflation technique to eliminate a known (founded) solution from the other unknown solutions leading to deflated NLAS; and (iii) a viable nonlinear least-squares and trust-region (LSTR) method for solving the NLAS and the deflated NLAS to find the multiple solutions sequentially one by one. We demonstrate through ample examples of differential equations and comparison with relevant existing approaches that the spectral LSTR-Deflation method has the merits: (i) it is quite flexible in choosing initial values, even starting from the same initial guess for finding all multiple solutions; (ii) it guarantees high-order accuracy; and (iii) it is quite fast to locate multiple distinct solutions and explore new solutions which are not reported in literature.

On time-domain NRBC for Maxwell's equations and its application in accurate simulation of electromagnetic invisibility cloaks

In this paper, we present analytic formulas of the temporal convolution kernel functions involved in the time-domain non-reflecting boundary condition (NRBC) for the electromagnetic scattering problems. Such exact formulas themselves lead to accurate and efficient algorithms for computing the NRBC for domain reduction of the time-domain Maxwell's system in $\mathbb R^3$. A second purpose of this paper is to derive a new time-domain model for the electromagnetic invisibility cloak. Different from the existing models, it contains only one unknown field and the seemingly complicated convolutions can be computed as efficiently as the temporal convolutions in the NRBC. The governing equation in the cloaking layer is valid for general geometry, e.g., a spherical or polygonal layer. Here, we aim at simulating the spherical invisibility cloak. We take the advantage of radially stratified dispersive media and special geometry, and develop an efficient vector spherical harmonic (VSH)-spectral-element method for its accurate simulation. Compared with limited results on FDTD simulation, the proposed method is optimal in both accuracy and computational cost. Indeed, the saving in computational time is significant.

Laguerre Functions and Their Applications to Tempered Fractional Differential Equaitons on Infinite Intervals

Tempered fractional derivatives originated from the tempered fractional diffusion equations (TFDEs) modeled on the whole space R (see [23]). For numerically solving TFDEs, two kinds of generalized Laguerre functions were defined and some important properties were proposed to establish the approximate theory. The related prototype tempered fractional differ- ential problems was proposed and solved as the guidance. TFDEs are numerically solved by two domains Laguerre spectral method and the numerical experiments show some properties of the TFDEs and verify the efficiency of the spectral scheme.
