Thermoelectric cooling properties of a quantum Hall Corbino device

We analyze the thermoelectric cooling properties of a Corbino device in the quantum Hall regime on the basis of experimental data of electrical conductance. We focus on the cooling power and the coefficient of performance within and beyond linear response. Thermovoltage measurements in this device reported in {\em Phys. Rev. Applied, {\bf 14} 034019 (2020)} indicated that the transport takes place in the diffusive regime, without signatures of effects due to the electron-phonon interaction in a wide range of temperatures and filling factors. In this regime, the heat and charge currents by electrons can be described by a single transmission function. We infer this function from experimental data of conductance measurements and we calculate the cooling power and the coefficient of performance for a wide range of filling factors and temperatures, as functions of the thermal and electrical biases. We predict an interesting cooling performance in several parameter regimes.

Tomography of zero-energy end modes in topological superconducting wires

We characterize the Majorana zero modes in topological hybrid superconductor-semiconductor wires with spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field, in terms of generalized Bloch coordinates $φ, θ, δ$, and analyze their transformation under SU(2) rotations. We show that, when the spin-orbit coupling and the magnetic field are perpendicular, $φ$ and $δ$ are universal in an appropriate coordinate system. We use these geometric properties to explain the behavior of the Josephson current in junctions of two wires with different orientations of the magnetic field and/or the spin-orbit coupling. We show how to extract from there, the angle $θ$, hence providing a full description of the Majorana modes.

Detailed study of nonlinear cooling with two-terminal configurations of topological edge states

We study the nonlinear thermoelectric cooling performance of a quantum spin Hall system. The setup consists of a nanomagnet contacting a Kramers' pair of helical edge states, resulting in a transmission probability with a rich structure containing peaks, well-type, and step-type features. We present a detailed analysis of the impact of all these features on the cooling performance, based to a large extent on analytical results. We analyze the cooling power as well as the coefficient of performance of the device. Since the basic features we study may be present in the transmission function of other mesoscopic conductors, our conclusions provide useful insights to analyze the nonlinear thermoelectric behavior of a wide class of quantum devices. The combination of all these properties define the response of the quantum spin Hall setup, for which we provide some realistic estimates for the conditions limiting and optimizing its operation as a cooling device.

Thermoelectricity in Quantum-Hall Corbino Structures

We measure the thermoelectric response of Corbino structures in the quantum Hall effect regime and compare it with a theoretical analysis. The measured thermoelectric voltages are qualitatively and quantitatively simulated based upon the independent measurement of the conductivity indicating that they originate predominantly from the electron diffusion. Electron-phonon interaction does not lead to a phonon-drag contribution in contrast to earlier Hall-bar experiments. This implies a description of the Onsager coefficients on the basis of a single transmission function, from which both thermovoltage and conductivity can be predicted with a single fitting parameter. It furthermore let us predict a figure of merit for the efficiency of thermoelectric cooling which becomes very large for partially filled Landau levels (LL) and high magnetic fieldse of merit can be estimated which becomes very large for partially filled Landau levels and high magnetic fields.

Nonlocal thermoelectricity in a topological Andreev interferometer

We discuss the phase dependent nonlocal thermoelectric effect in a topological Josephson junction in contact with a normal-metal probe. We show that, due to the helical nature of topological edge states, nonlocal thermoelectricity is generated by a purely Andreev interferometric mechanism. This response can be tuned by imposing a Josephson phase difference, through the application of a dissipationless current between the two superconductors, even without the need of applying an external magnetic field. We discuss in detail the origin of this effect and we provide also a realistic estimation of the nonlocal Seebeck coefficient that results of the order of few $μV/K$.

Geometric properties of adiabatic quantum thermal machines

We present a general unified approach for the study of quantum thermal machines, including both heat engines and refrigerators, operating under periodic adiabatic driving and in contact with thermal reservoirs kept at different temperatures. We show that many observables characterizing this operating mode and the performance of the machine are of geometric nature. Heat-work conversion mechanisms and dissipation of energy can be described, respectively, by the antisymmetric and symmetric components of a thermal geometric tensor defined in the space of time-dependent parameters generalized to include the temperature bias. The antisymmetric component can be identified as a Berry curvature, while the symmetric component defines the metric of the manifold. We show that the operation of adiabatic thermal machines, and consequently also their efficiency, are intimately related to these geometric aspects. We illustrate these ideas by discussing two specific cases: a slowly driven qubit asymmetrically coupled to two bosonic reservoirs kept at different temperatures, and a quantum dot driven by a rotating magnetic field and strongly coupled to electron reservoirs with different polarizations. Both examples are already amenable for an experimental verification.

Nonlocal Thermoelectricity in a S-TI-S Junction in Contact with a N-Metal Probe: Evidence for Helical Edge States

We consider a Josephson junction hosting a Kramers pair of helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall bar in contact with a normal-metal probe. In this hybrid system, the orbital phase induced by a small magnetic field threading the junction known as Doppler shift (DS), combines with the conventional Josephson phase difference and originates an effect akin to a Zeeman field in the spectrum. As a consequence, when a temperature bias is applied to the superconducting terminals, a thermoelectric current is established in the normal probe. We argue that this purely non-local thermoelectric effect is a unique signature of the helical nature of the edge states coupled to superconducting leads and it can constitute a useful tool for probing the helical nature of the edge states in systems where the Hall bar configuration is difficult to achieve. We fully characterize thermoelectric response and performance of this hybrid junction in a wide range of parameters, demonstrating that the external magnetic flux inducing the DS can be used as a knob to control the thermoelectric response and the heat flow in a novel device based on topological junctions.

Optimal thermoelectricity with quantum spin-Hall edge states

We study the thermoelectric properties of a Kramers pair of helical edge states of the quantum spin Hall effect coupled to a nanomagnet with a component of the magnetization perpendicular to the direction of the spin-orbit interaction of the host. We show that the transmission function of this structure has the desired qualities for optimal thermoelectric performance in the quantum coherent regime. For a single magnetic domain there is a power generation close to the optimal bound. In a configuration with two magnetic domains with different orientations, pronounced peaks in the transmission functions and resonances lead to a high figure of merit. We provide estimates for the fabrication of this device with HgTe quantum-well topological insulators.

Work exchange, geometric magnetization and fluctuation-dissipation relations in a quantum dot under adiabatic magnetoelectric driving

We study the adiabatic dynamics of the charge, spin and energy of a quantum dot with a Coulomb interaction under two-parameter driving, associated to time-dependent gate voltage and magnetic field. The quantum dot is coupled to a single reservoir at temperature $T=0$, hence, the net energy dynamics is fully dissipative. However, in the presence of many-body interactions, other interesting mechanisms take place, like the net exchange of work between the two types of forces and the non-equilibrium accumulation of charge with different spin orientations. The latter has a geometric nature. The dissipation takes place in the form of an instantaneous Joule law with the universal resistance $R_0=h/2e^2$. We show the relation between this Joule law and instantaneous fluctuation-dissipation relations. The latter lead to generalized Korringa-Shiba relations, valid in the Fermi-liquid regime.

Catalogue of Andreev spectra and Josephson effects in structures with time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor wires

We study all the possible different two terminal configurations of Josephson junctions containing wires of time-reversal invariant topological superconductors (TRITOPS) and ordinary superconductors, including combinations with an interacting quantum dot between both wires in the junction. We introduce simple effective Hamiltonians which explain the different qualitative behaviors obtained. We analyze a wide range of phenomena, including occurrence and quenching of the so called $0-π$ transition, anomalous periodicity and jumps of the Josephson current as a function of the phase difference, and finite Josephson current in the absence of magnetic flux.

Proximity induced time-reversal topological superconductivity in Bi2Se3 films without phase tuning

Many proposals to generate a time-reversal invariant topological superconducting phase are based on imposing a $π$ phase difference between the superconducting leads proximitizing a nanostructure. We show that this phase can be induced on a thin film of a topological insulator like Bi$_2$Se$_3$ in proximity to a single s-wave superconductor. In our analysis we take into account the parity degree of freedom of the electronic states which is not included in effective Dirac-like surface theories. We find that the topological phase can be reached when the induced interparity pairing dominates over the intraparity one. Application of an electric field perpendicular to the film extends the range of parameters where the topological phase occurs.

Entangled end states with fractionalized spin projection in a time-reversal-invariant topological superconducting wire

We study the ground state and low-energy subgap excitations of a finite wire of a time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor (TRITOPS) with spin-orbit coupling. We solve the problem analytically for a long chain of a specific one-dimensional lattice model in the electron-hole symmetric configuration and numerically for other cases of the same model. We present results for the spin density of excitations in long chains with an odd number of particles. The total spin projection along the axis of the spin-orbit coupling $S_z= \pm 1/2$ is distributed with fractions $\pm 1/4$ localized at both ends, and shows even-odd alternation along the sites of the chain. We calculate the localization length of these excitations and find that it can be well approximated by a simple analytical expression. We show that the energy $E$ of the lowest subgap excitations of the finite chain defines tunneling and entanglement between end states. We discuss the effect of a Zeeman coupling $Δ_Z$ on one of the ends of the chain only. For $Δ_Z<E$, the energy difference of excitations with opposite spin orientation is $Δ_Z/2$, consistent with a spin projection $\pm 1/4$. We argue that these physical features are not model dependent and can be experimentally observed in TRITOPS wires under appropriate conditions.

Anomalous Joule law in the adiabatic dynamics of a normal-superconductor quantum dot

We formulate a general theory to study the time-dependent charge and energy transport of an adiabatically driven quantum dot in contact to normal and superconducting reservoirs at T=0. This setup is a generalization of a quantum RC circuit, with capacitive components due to Andreev processes and induced pairing fluctuations, in addition to the convencional normal charge fluctuations. The dynamics for the dissipation of energy is ruled by a Joule law of four channels in parallel with the universal Büttiker resistance R_0=e^2/2h per channel. Two transport channels are associated to the two spin components of the usual charge fluctuations, while the other two are associated to electrons and holes due to pairing fluctuations. The latter leads to an "anomalous" component of the Joule law and take place with a vanishing net current due to the opposite flows of electrons and holes.

Enhanced thermoelectric response in the fractional quantum Hall effect

We study the linear thermoelectric response of a quantum dot embedded in a constriction of a quantum Hall bar with fractional filling factors nu=1/m within Laughlin series. We calculate the figure of merit ZT for the maximum efficiency at a fixed temperature difference. We find a significant enhancement of this quantity in the fractional filling in relation to the integer-filling case, which is a direct consequence of the fractionalization of the electron in the fractional quantum Hall state. We present simple theoretical expressions for the Onsager coefficients at low temperatures, which explicitly show that ZT and the Seebeck coefficient increase with m.

Probing the energy reactance with adiabatically driven quantum dots

The tunneling Hamiltonian describes a particle transfer from one region to the other. While there is no particle storage in the tunneling region itself, it has associated certain amount of energy. We name the corresponding flux energy reactance since, like an electrical reactance, it manifests itself in time-dependent transport only. Noticeably, this quantity is crucial to reproduce the universal charge relaxation resistance for a single-channel quantum capacitor at low temperatures. We show that a conceptually simple experiment is capable of demonstrating the existence of the energy reactance.

Fractional spin and Josephson effect in time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors

Time reversal invariant topological superconducting (TRITOPS) wires are known to host a fractional spin hbar/4 at their ends. We investigate how this fractional spin affects the Josephson current in a TRITOPS-quantum dot-TRITOPS Josephson junction, describing the wire in a model which can be tuned between a topological and a nontopological phase. We compute the equilibrium Josephson current of the full model by continuous-time Monte Carlo simulations and interpret the results within an effective low-energy theory. We show that in the topological phase, the 0-to-pi transition is quenched via formation of a spin singlet from the quantum dot spin and the fractional spins associated with the two adjacent topological superconductors.

Anderson-Mott transition in a disordered Hubbard model with correlated hopping

We study the ground state phase diagram of the Anderson-Hubbard model with correlated hopping at half filling in one-dimension. The Hamiltonian has a local Coulomb repulsion $U$ and a disorder potential with local energies randomly distributed in the interval $(-W,+W)$ with equal probability, acting on the singly occupied sites. The hopping process which modifies the number of doubly occupied sites is forbidden. The hopping between nearest-neighbor singly occupied and empty sites or between singly occupied and doubly occupied sites have the same amplitude $t$. We identify three different phases as functions of the disorder amplitude $W$ and Coulomb interaction strength $U>0$. When $U<4t$ the system shows a metallic phase (i) only when no disorder is present $W=0$ or an Anderson-localized phase (ii) when disorder is introduced $W\neq 0$. When $U>4t$ the Anderson-localized phase survives as long as disorder effects dominates on the interaction effects, otherwise a Mott insulator phase (iii) arises. The phases (i) and (ii) are characterized by a finite density of doublons and a vanishing charge gap between the ground state and the excited states. The phase (iii) is characterized by vanishing density of doublons and a finite gap for the charge excitations.

Non-linear charge and energy dynamics of an adiabatically driven interacting quantum dot

We formulate a general theory to study the time-dependent charge and energy transport of an adiabatically driven interacting quantum dot in contact to a reservoir for arbitrary amplitudes of the driving potential. We study within this framework the Anderson impurity model with a local ac gate voltage. We show that the exact adiabatic quantum dynamics of this system is fully determined by the behavior of the charge susceptibility of the frozen problem. At $T=0$, we evaluate the dynamic response functions with the numerical renormalization group (NRG). The time-resolved heat production exhibits a pronounced feature described by an instantaneous Joule law characterized by an universal resistance quantum $R_0=h/(2 e^2)$ for each spin channel. We show that this law holds in non-interacting as well as in the interacting system and also when the system is spin-polarized. In addition, in the presence of a static magnetic field, the interplay between many-body interactions and spin polarization leads to a non-trivial energy exchange between electrons with different spin components.
