From adiabatic to non-adiabatic pumping in graphene nanoribbons

Non-equilibrium two-parameter pumping transport through graphene ribbons, attached to reservoirs is described. A tight-binding model is solved using Keldysh formalism, and the crossover between adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes is studied. Pumped dc currents through armchair ribbons show properties common in two-dimensional systems. The width-dependent dc current in zigzag ribbons, reveals that edge states akin to those in two-dimensional topological insulators, do not contribute to pumped transport in the adiabatic regime. The interplay between propagating and evanescent modes is discussed.

Chiral-mediated entanglement in an Aharonov-Bohm ring

We study the orbital entanglement in a biased Aharonov-Bohm ring connected in a four-terminal setup. We find that the concurrence achieves a maximum when the magnetic flux B coincides with an integer number of a half flux quantum 0 /2. We show that this behavior is a consequence of the existence of degenerate states of the ring having opposite chirality. We also analyze the behavior of the noise as a function of and discuss the reliability of this quantity as evidence of entanglement.

Four-terminal resistance of an interacting quantum wire with weakly invasive contacts

We analyze the behavior of the four-terminal resistance, relative to the two-terminal resistance of an interacting quantum wire with an impurity, taking into account the invasiveness of the voltage probes. We consider a one-dimensional Luttinger model of spinless fermions for the wire. We treat the coupling to the voltage probes perturbatively, within the framework of non-equilibrium Green function techniques. Our investigation unveils the combined effect of impurities, electron-electron interactions and invasiveness of the probes on the possible occurrence of negative resistance.

Chiral heat transport in driven quantum Hall and quantum spin Hall edge states

We consider a model for an edge state of electronic systems in the quantum Hall regime with filling $ν=1$ and in the quantum spin Hall regime. In both cases the system is in contact with two reservoirs by tunneling at point contacts. Both systems are locally driven by applying an ac voltage in one of the contacts. By weakly coupling them to a third reservoir, the transport of the generated heat is studied in two different ways: i) when the third reservoir acts as a thermometer the local temperature is sensed, and ii) when the third reservoir acts as a voltage probe the time-dependent local voltage is sensed. Our results indicate a chiral propagation of the heat along the edge in the quantum Hall case and in the quantum spin Hall case (if the injected electrons are spin polarized). We also show that a similar picture is obtained if instead of heating by ac driving the system is put in contact to a stationary reservoir at a higher temperature. In both cases the temperature profile shows that the electrons along the edge thermalize with the closest "upstream" reservoir.

Heat pumping in nanomechanical systems

We propose using a phonon pumping mechanism to transfer heat from a cold to a hot body using a propagating modulation of the medium connecting the two bodies. This phonon pump can cool nanomechanical systems without the need for active feedback. We compute the lowest temperature that this refrigerator can achieve.

Local Temperatures and Heat Flow in Quantum Driven Systems

We discuss the concept of local temperature for quantum systems driven out of equilibrium by ac pumps showing explicitly that it is the correct indicator for heat flow. We also show that its use allows for a generalization of the Wiedemann Franz law.

ac-dc voltage profile and four point impedance of a quantum driven system

We investigate the behavior of the time-dependent voltage drop in a periodically driven quantum conductor sensed by weakly coupled dynamical voltages probes. We introduce the concepts of ac-dc local voltage and four point impedance in an electronic system driven by ac fields. We discuss the properties of the different components of these quantities in a simple model of a quantum pump, where two ac voltages oscillating with a phase lag are applied at the walls of a quantum dot.

Local and Effective Temperatures of Quantum Driven Systems

We introduce thermometers to define the local temperature of an electronic system driven out-of-equilibrium by local AC fields. We also define the effective temperature in terms of a local fluctuation-dissipation-relation. We show that within the weak driving regime these two temperatures coincide. We also discuss the behavior of the local temperature along the sample. We show that it exhibits spatial fluctuations following an oscillatory pattern. For weak driving, regions of the sample become heated, while others become cooled as a consequence of the driving.

Thermal transport in one-dimensional spin heterostructures

We study heat transport in a one-dimensional inhomogeneous quantum spin 1/2 system. It consists of a finite-size XX spin chain coupled at its ends to semi-infinite XX and XY chains at different temperatures, which play the role of heat and spin reservoirs. After using the Jordan-Wigner transformation we map the original spin Hamiltonian into a fermionic Hamiltonian, which contains normal and pairing terms. We find the expressions for the heat currents and solve the problem with a non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. We analyze the behavior of the heat currents as functions of the model parameters. When finite magnetic fields are applied at the two reservoirs, the system exhibits rectification effects in the heat flow.

Stationary transport in mesoscopic hybrid structures with contacts to superconducting and normal wires. A Green's function approach for multiterminal setups

We generalize the representation of the real time Green's functions introduced by Langreth and Nordlander [Phys. Rev. B 43 2541 (1991)] and Meir and Wingreen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68 2512 (1992)] in stationary quantum transport in order to study problems with hybrid structures containing normal (N) and superconducting (S) pieces. We illustrate the treatment in a S-N junction under a stationary bias and investigate in detail the behavior of the equilibrium currents in a normal ring threaded by a magnetic flux with attached superconducting wires at equilibrium. We analyze the flux sensitivity of the Andreev states and we show that their response is equivalent to the one corresponding to the Cooper pairs with momentum q=0 in an isolated superconducting ring.

Voltage profile and four terminal resistance of an interacting quantum wire

We investigate the behavior of the four-terminal resistance $R_{4pt}$ in a quantum wire described by a Luttinger liquid in two relevant situations: (i) in the presence of a single impurity within the wire and (ii) under the effect of asymmetries introduced by dirty voltage probes. In the first case, interactions leave a signature in a power law behavior of $R_{4pt}$ as a function of the voltage $V$ and the temperature $T$. In the second case interactions tend to mask the effect of the asymmetries. In both scenarios the occurrence of negative values of $R_{4pt}$ is explained in simple terms.

Non adiabatic features of electron pumping through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime

We investigate the behavior of the dc electronic current, Jdc, in an interacting quantum dot driven by two ac local potentials oscillating with a frequency, Omega0, and a phase-lag, phi. We provide analytical functions to describe the fingerprints of the Coulomb interaction in an experimental Jdc vs phi characteristic curve. We show that the Kondo resonance reduces at low temperatures the frequency range for the linear behavior of Jdc in Omega0 to take place and determines the evolution of the dc-current as the temperature increases.

Heat production and energy balance in nanoengines driven by time-dependent fields

We present a formalism to study the heat transport and the power developed by the local driving fields on a quantum system coupled to macroscopic reservoirs. We show that, quite generally, two important mechanisms can take place: (i) directed heat transport between reservoirs induced by the ac potentials and (ii) at slow driving, two oscillating out of phase forces perform work against each other, while the energy dissipated into the reservoirs is negligible

Dictionary between scattering matrix and Keldysh formalisms for quantum transport driven by time-periodic fields

We present the relation between the Floquet scattering matrix and the non-equilibrium Green's function formalisms to transport theory in noninteracting electronic systems in contact to reservoirs and driven by time-periodic fields. We present a translation formula that expresses the Floquet scattering matrix in terms of a Fourier transform of the retarded Green's function. We prove that such representation satisfies the fundamental identities of tran sport theory. We also present the ``adiabatic'' approximation to the dc-current in the language of the Keldysh formalism.

Symmetry and environment effects on rectification mechanisms in quantum pumps

We consider a paradigmatic model of quantum pumps and discuss its rectification properties in the framework of a symmetry analysis proposed for ratchet systems. We discuss the role of the environment in breaking time-reversal symmetry and the possibility of a finite directed current in the Hamiltonian limit of annular systems.

A Green-function approach to transport phenomena in quantum pumps

We present a general treatment to study transport phenomena in systems described by tight-binding Hamiltonians coupled to reservoirs and with one or more time-periodic potentials. We apply this treatment to the study of transport phenomena in a double barrier structure with one and two harmonic potentials. Among other properties, we discuss the origin of the sign of the net current.

Quantum Monte Carlo method for models of molecular nanodevices

We introduce a quantum Monte Carlo technique to calculate exactly at finite temperatures the Green function of a fermionic quantum impurity coupled to a bosonic field. While the algorithm is general, we focus on the single impurity Anderson model coupled to a Holstein phonon as a schematic model for a molecular transistor. We compute the density of states at the impurity in a large range of parameters, to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method. We also obtain the conductance of the impurity model and analyze different regimes. The results show that even in the case when the effective attractive phonon interaction is larger than the Coulomb repulsion, a Kondo-like conductance behavior might be observed.
