Stability for the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative noise via finite-dimensional feedback

In this paper, we study the long-time behavior of a stochastic heat equation with a class of infinite-dimensional multiplicative noises and localized control. We first illustrate through simple examples of the uncontrolled dynamics that mean-square and almost sure exponential stability may hold under different conditions on the parameters, reflecting the interplay between the drift and the multiplicative noise. We then construct a finite-dimensional feedback control acting on a measurable subset of positive measure, built from finitely many Fourier modes of the solution. In particular, we show that the number of controlled modes determines the decay rate and allows for arbitrarily fast stabilization in the mean-square sense. As a consequence, almost sure exponential stability is recovered via a probabilistic argument, so that both notions of stability are achieved within the same framework and with the same guaranteed decay rate. We also establish null-controllability at any positive time through an iterative construction of adapted controls from finite-dimensional feedback laws. The construction relies on the quantitative stabilization estimates and requires no observability inequality for the adjoint equation.

$L^{p}$-estimates, local well-posedness and controllability for linear and semilinear backward SPDEs

In this paper, we study linear backward parabolic SPDEs in bounded domains and present new a priori estimates for their weak solutions. Inspired by the seminal work of Y. Hu, J. Ma and J. Yong from 2002 on strong solutions, we establish $L^p$-estimates requiring minimal assumptions on the regularity of the coefficients, the terminal data, and the external force. Our approach relies on direct, constructive, and quantitative arguments, adapted from known methods in the theory of SPDEs to this setting. In particular, we develop a new Itô's formula for the $L^p$-norm of the backward solution, tailored to this setting and extending the classical result in the $L^2$-framework. This formula is then used to improve further the regularity of the first component of the solution up to $L^\infty$. We also present two applications: a local existence result for a semilinear equation without imposing any growth condition on the nonlinear term, and a novel local controllability result for semilinear backward SPDEs that partially resolves an open problem in the field.

Statistical inference for a stochastic partial differential equation related to an ecological niche

In this paper, we use a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) as a model for the density of a population under the influence of random external forces/stimuli given by the environment. We study statistical properties for two crucial parameters of the SPDE that describe the dynamic of the system. To do that we use the Galerkin projection to transform the problem, passing from the SPDE to a system of independent SDEs; in this manner, we are able to find the Maximum likelihood estimator of the parameters. We validate the method by using simulations of the SDEs. We prove consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimators; the latter is showed using the Malliavin-Stein method. We illustrate our results with numerical experiments.

HJB equation for maximization of wealth under insider trading

In this paper, we combine the techniques of enlargement of filtrations and stochastic control theory to establish an extension of the verification theorem, where the coefficients of the stochastic controlled equation are adapted to the underlying filtration and the controls are adapted to a bigger filtration $\mathbf{G}$ than the one generated by the corresponding Brownian motion $B$. Using the forward integral defined by Russo and Vallois \cite{RV1993}, we show that there is a $\mathbf{G}$-adapted optimal control with respect to a certain cost functional if and only if the Brownian motion $B$ is a $\mathbf{G}$-semimartingale. The extended verification theorem allows us to study a financial market with an insider in order to take advantage of the extra information that the insider has from the beginning. Finally, we consider two examples throughout the extended verification theorem. These problems appear in financial markets with an insider.

Controllability results for stochastic coupled systems of fourth- and second-order parabolic equations

In this paper, we study some controllability and observability problems for stochastic systems coupling fourth- and second-order parabolic equations. The main goal is to control both equations with only one controller localized on the drift of the fourth-order equation. We analyze two cases: on one hand, we study the controllability of a linear backward system where the couplings are made only through first-order terms. The key point is to use suitable Carleman estimates for the heat equation and the fourth-order operator with the same weight to deduce an observability inequality for the adjoint system. On the other hand, we study the controllability of a simplified nonlinear coupled model of forward equations. This case, which is well-known to be harder to solve, follows a methodology that has been introduced recently and relies on an adaptation of the well-known source term method in the stochastic setting together with a truncation procedure. This approach gives a new concept of controllability for stochastic systems.

Rates of convergence for the number of zeros of random trigonometric polynomials

In this paper, we quantify the rate of convergence between the distribution of number of zeros of random trigonometric polynomials (RTP) with i.i.d. centered random coefficients and the number of zeros of a stationary centered Gaussian process G, whose covariance function is given by the sinc function. First, we find the convergence of the RTP towards G in the Wasserstein-1 distance, which in turn is a consequence of Donsker Theorem. Then, we use this result to derive the rate of convergence between their respective number of zeros. Since the number of real zeros of the RTP is not a continuous function, we use the Kac-Rice formula to express it as the limit of an integral and, in this way, we approximate it by locally Lipschitz continuous functions.

Global null-controllability for stochastic semilinear parabolic equations

In this paper, we prove the small-time global null-controllability of forward (resp. backward) semilinear stochastic parabolic equations with globally Lipschitz nonlinearities in the drift and diffusion terms (resp. in the drift term). In particular, we solve the open question posed by S. Tang and X. Zhang, in 2009. We propose a new twist on a classical strategy for controlling linear stochastic systems. By employing a new refined Carleman estimate, we obtain a controllability result in a weighted space for a linear system with source terms. The main novelty here is that the Carleman parameters are made explicit and are then used in a Banach fixed point method. This allows to circumvent the well-known problem of the lack of compactness embeddings for the solutions spaces arising in the study of controllability problems for stochastic PDEs.

Statistical null-controllability of stochastic nonlinear parabolic equations

In this paper, we consider forward stochastic nonlinear parabolic equations, with a control localized in the drift term. Under suitable assumptions, we prove the small-time global null-controllability, with a truncated nonlinearity. We also prove the statistical local null-controllability of the true system. The proof relies on a precise estimation of the cost of null-controllability of the stochastic heat equation and on an adaptation of the source term method to the stochastic setting. The main difficulty comes from the estimation of the nonlinearity in the fixed point argument due to the lack of regularity (in probability) of the functional spaces where stochastic parabolic equations are well-posed. This main issue is tackled through a truncation procedure. As relevant examples that are covered by our results, let us mention the stochastic Burgers equation in the one dimensional case and the Allen-Cahn equation up to the three-dimensional setting.

Distribution function of the blow up time of the solution of an anticipating random fatigue equation

In this paper, we study the distribution function of the time of explosion of a stochastic differential equation modeling the length of the dominant crack due to fatigue. The main novelty is that initial condition is regarded as an anticipating random variable and the stochastic integral is in the forward sense. Under suitable conditions, we use the substitution formula from Russo and Vallois to find the local solution of this equation. Then, we find the law of blow up time by proving some results on barrier crossing probabilities of Brownian bridge.

Some remarks on the Robust Stackelberg controllability for the heat equation with controls on the boundary

In this paper, we present some controllability results for the heat equation in the framework of hierarchic control. We present a Stackelberg strategy combining the concept of controllability with robustness: the main control (the leader) is in charge of a null-controllability objective while a secondary control (the follower) solves a robust control problem, this is, we look for an optimal control in the presence of the worst disturbance. We improve previous results by considering that either the leader or follower control acts on a small part of the boundary. We also present a discussion about the possibility and limitations of placing all the involved controls on the boundary.

An Osgood's criterion for a semilinear stochastic differential equation

The purpose of this paper is to give an Osgood's criterion for solutions of semilinear stochastic differential equations of the form $X_{t}=ξ+\int_{0}^{t}b(s,X_{s})ds+\int_{0}^{t}σ(s)X_{s}dW_{s},\ t\geq 0$. Here, $b$ is a non-negative, non-decreasing by components and continuous random field and $σ$ is a predictable and continuous process. Also we present a generalization of the so-called Feller's test whenever $σ\equiv 1$.
