Supersymmetric Musings on the Predictivity of Family Symmetries

We discuss the predictivity of family symmetries for the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters in the framework of supergravity. We show that unknown details of the messenger sector and the supersymmetry breaking hidden sector enter into the soft parameters, making it difficult to obtain robust predictions. We find that there are specific choices of messenger fields which can improve the predictivity for the soft parameters.

Bridging flavour violation and leptogenesis in SU(3) family models

We reconsider basic, in the sense of minimal field content, Pati-Salam x SU(3) family models which make use of the Type I see-saw mechanism to reproduce the observed mixing and mass spectrum in the neutrino sector. The goal of this is to achieve the observed baryon asymmetry through the thermal decay of the lightest right-handed neutrino and at the same time to be consistent with the expected experimental lepton flavour violation sensitivity. This kind of models have been previously considered but it was not possible to achieve a compatibility among all of the ingredients mentioned above. We describe then how different SU(3) messengers, the heavy fields that decouple and produce the right form of the Yukawa couplings together with the scalars breaking the SU(3) symmetry, can lead to different Yukawa couplings. This in turn implies different consequences for flavour violation couplings and conditions for realizing the right amount of baryon asymmetry through the decay of the lightest right-handed neutrino. Also a highlight of the present work is a new fit of the Yukawa textures traditionally embedded in SU(3) family models.

Phenomenology of flavon fields at the LHC

We study low energy constraints from flavour violating processes, production and decay at the LHC of a scalar field varphi (flavon) associated to the breaking of a non-supersymmetric Abelian family symmetry at the TeV scale. This symmetry is constrained to reproduce fermion masses and mixing, up to O(1) coefficients. The non-supersymmetric gauged U(1) models considered are severely restricted by cancellation of anomalies and LEP bounds on contact interactions, consequently its phenomenology is out of the LHC reach. We therefore introduce an effective U(1) which is not gauged and it is broken explicitly by a CP odd term at the TeV scale. This helps us to explore flavour violating processes, production and decay at the LHC for these kind of light scalars. In this context we first study the constraints on the flavon mass and its vacuum expectation value from low energy flavour changing processes such as μ-> eγ. We find that a flavon of about m_ϕ<~ 150 GeV could be experimentally allowed. These kind of flavons could be significantly generated at the LHC via the gluon fusion mechanism and the single top production channel g u -> t ϕ. The produced flavons can have characteristic decay modes such as t \bar{c} for m_ϕ>~ m_t, and τ\barμ for m_ϕ<~ m_t, which could be effectively useful to detect flavons.

A Sneutrino NLSP in the $ν$CMSSM

We extend the constrained minimal supersymmetric model (CMSSM) by adding a right-handed neutrino superfield ($ν$CMSSM) which decouples close to the GUT scale. We study the effects of a right-handed neutrino on the low energy spectrum and focus on the predictions for dark matter properties. We pay particular attention to the realization of the light (left-handed) sneutrino which can be the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) with either the neutralino or gravitino as the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). Notably, for the case of a neutralino LSP with a sneutrino NLSP, there are new `sneutrino coannihilation regions' which yield the desired thermal neutralino relic density determined by WMAP.

Constraints on Supersymmetric Flavour Models from b->s gamma

We consider the effects of departures from minimal flavour violations (MFV) in the context of CMSSM-like theories. Second and third generation off-diagonal elements in the Yukawa, sfermion, and trilinear mass matrices are taken to be non-zero at the GUT scale. These are run down together with MSSM parameters to the electroweak scale. We apply constraints from fermion masses and CKM matrix elements to limit the range of the new free parameters of the model. We determine the effect of the departure from MFV on the branching ratio of b->s gamma. We find that only when the expansion parameter in the down-squark sector is relatively large there is a noticeable effect, which tends to relax the lower limit from b->s gamma on the universal gaugino mass. We also find that the expansion parameter associated with the slepton sector needs to be smaller than the corresponding parameter in the down-squark sector in order to be compliant with the bound imposed by the branching ratio of tau-> mu gamma.

Kahler corrections and softly broken family symmetries

Spontaneously broken family symmetry provides a promising origin for the observed quark and lepton mass and mixing angle structure. In a supersymmetric theory such structure comes from a combination of the contributions from the superpotential and the Kähler potential. The superpotential effects have been widely studied but relatively little attention has been given to the effects of the Kähler sector. In this paper we develop techniques to simplify the analysis of such Kähler effects. Using them we show that in the class of theories with an hierarchical structure for the Yukawa couplings the Kähler corrections to both the masses and mixing angles are subdominant. This is true even in cases that texture zeros are filled in by the terms coming from the Kähler potential.

Spontaneous CP violation and Non-Abelian Family Symmetry in SUSY

We analyse the properties of generic models based on an SU(3) family symmetry providing a full description of quark charged lepton and neutrino masses and mixing angles. We show that a precise fit of the resulting fermion textures is consistent with CP being spontaneously broken in the flavour sector. The CP violating phases are determined by the scalar potential and we discuss how symmetries readily lead to a maximal phase controlling CP violation in the quark sector. In a specific model the CP violation to be expected in the neutrino sector is related to that in the quark sector and we determine this relation for two viable models. In addition to giving rise to the observed structure of quark and lepton masses this class of model solves both the CP and flavour problems normally associated with supersymmetric models. The flavour structure of the soft supersymmetry breaking terms is controlled by the family symmetry and we analyse some of the related phenomenological implications.
