Asymptotic Degree of Random Monomial Ideals

One of the fundamental invariants connecting algebra and geometry is the degree of an ideal. In this paper we derive the probabilistic behavior of degree with respect to the versatile Erdős-Rényi-type model for random monomial ideals defined in \cite{rmi}. We study the staircase structure associated to a monomial ideal, and show that in the random case the shape of the staircase diagram is approximately hyperbolic, and this behavior is robust across several random models. Since the discrete volume under this staircase is related to the summatory higher-order divisor function studied in number theory, we use this connection and our control over the shape of the staircase diagram to derive the asymptotic degree of a random monomial ideal. Another way to compute the degree of a monomial ideal is with a standard pair decomposition. This paper derives bounds on the number of standard pairs of a random monomial ideal indexed by any subset of the ring variables. The standard pairs indexed by maximal subsets give a count of degree, as well as being a more nuanced invariant of the random monomial ideal.

Discovery learning in an interdisciplinary course on finite fields and applications

The authors describe their approach to teaching a course on finite fields and combinatorial applications, including block designs and error-correcting codes, using a hybrid of lectures and active learning. Under the discussed classroom model, there are two lecture days and two discovery-based discussion days each week. Discussions center around group activities that build intuition for abstract concepts while avoiding excessive technical machinery. Teaching this course presents some unique challenges, as much of the content typically appears in a second course in abstract algebra, yet the students exhibit a wide range of mathematical preparation.

Average Behavior of Minimal Free Resolutions of Monomial Ideals

We describe the typical homological properties of monomial ideals defined by random generating sets. We show that, under mild assumptions, random monomial ideals (RMI's) will almost always have resolutions of maximal length; that is, the projective dimension will almost always be $n$, where $n$ is the number of variables in the polynomial ring. We give a rigorous proof that Cohen-Macaulayness is a "rare" property. We characterize when an RMI is generic/strongly generic, and when it "is Scarf"---in other words, when the algebraic Scarf complex of $M\subset S=k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ gives a minimal free resolution of $S/M$. As a result we see that, outside of a very specific ratio of model parameters, RMI's are Scarf only when they are generic. We end with a discussion of the average magnitude of Betti numbers.

Random Monomial Ideals

Inspired by the study of random graphs and simplicial complexes, and motivated by the need to understand average behavior of ideals, we propose and study probabilistic models of random monomial ideals. We prove theorems about the probability distributions, expectations and thresholds for events involving monomial ideals with given Hilbert function, Krull dimension, first graded Betti numbers, and present several experimentally-backed conjectures about regularity, projective dimension, strong genericity, and Cohen-Macaulayness of random monomial ideals.
