Unknotting number for Lorenz knots

The unknotting number of a positive braid with n strands and k intersections is known to be equal to (k-n+1)/2. We consider Lorenz knots (which are positive braids) and, using a different method, find their unknotting numbers in terms of their positions on the Lorenz attractor.

On cycles and coverings associated to a knot

We consider the space of all representations of the commutator subgroup of a knot group into a finite abelian group Σ, together with a shift map σ_x. This is a finite dynamical system, introduced by D.Silver and S. Williams. We describe the lengths of its cycles in terms of the roots of the Alexander polynomial of the knot. This generalizes our previous result for Σ= Z/p, p is prime, and gives a complete classification of depth 2 solvable coverings of the knot complement.

Periodic orbits of a dynamical system related to a knot

We consider the space of all representations of the commutator subgroup of a knot group into Z/p, p is prime. As proven by D. Silver and S. Williams, this space can be completely described by a finite oriented graph. We describe the lengths of cycles in this graph.
