Factorized Deep Generative Models for Trajectory Generation with Spatiotemporal-Validity Constraints

Trajectory data generation is an important domain that characterizes the generative process of mobility data. Traditional methods heavily rely on predefined heuristics and distributions and are weak in learning unknown mechanisms. Inspired by the success of deep generative neural networks for images and texts, a fast-developing research topic is deep generative models for trajectory data which can learn expressively explanatory models for sophisticated latent patterns. This is a nascent yet promising domain for many applications. We first propose novel deep generative models factorizing time-variant and time-invariant latent variables that characterize global and local semantics, respectively. We then develop new inference strategies based on variational inference and constrained optimization to encapsulate the spatiotemporal validity. New deep neural network architectures have been developed to implement the inference and generation models with newly-generalized latent variable priors. The proposed methods achieved significant improvements in quantitative and qualitative evaluations in extensive experiments.

TG-GAN: Continuous-time Temporal Graph Generation with Deep Generative Models

The recent deep generative models for static graphs that are now being actively developed have achieved significant success in areas such as molecule design. However, many real-world problems involve temporal graphs whose topology and attribute values evolve dynamically over time, including important applications such as protein folding, human mobility networks, and social network growth. As yet, deep generative models for temporal graphs are not yet well understood and existing techniques for static graphs are not adequate for temporal graphs since they cannot 1) encode and decode continuously-varying graph topology chronologically, 2) enforce validity via temporal constraints, or 3) ensure efficiency for information-lossless temporal resolution. To address these challenges, we propose a new model, called ``Temporal Graph Generative Adversarial Network'' (TG-GAN) for continuous-time temporal graph generation, by modeling the deep generative process for truncated temporal random walks and their compositions. Specifically, we first propose a novel temporal graph generator that jointly model truncated edge sequences, time budgets, and node attributes, with novel activation functions that enforce temporal validity constraints under recurrent architecture. In addition, a new temporal graph discriminator is proposed, which combines time and node encoding operations over a recurrent architecture to distinguish the generated sequences from the real ones sampled by a newly-developed truncated temporal random walk sampler. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate TG-GAN significantly outperforms the comparison methods in efficiency and effectiveness.

Station-to-User Transfer Learning: Towards Explainable User Clustering Through Latent Trip Signatures Using Tidal-Regularized Non-Negative Matrix Factorization

Urban areas provide us with a treasure trove of available data capturing almost every aspect of a population's life. This work focuses on mobility data and how it will help improve our understanding of urban mobility patterns. Readily available and sizable farecard data captures trips in a public transportation network. However, such data typically lacks temporal modalities and as such the task of inferring trip semantic, station function, and user profile is quite challenging. As existing approaches either focus on station-level or user-level signals, they are prone to overfitting and generate less credible and insightful results. To properly learn such characteristics from trip data, we propose a Collective Learning Framework through Latent Representation, which augments user-level learning with collective patterns learned from station-level signals. This framework uses a novel, so-called Tidal-Regularized Non-negative Matrix Factorization method, which incorporates domain knowledge in the form of temporal passenger flow patterns in generic Non-negative Matrix Factorization. To evaluate our model performance, a user stability test based on the classical Rand Index is introduced as a metric to benchmark different unsupervised learning models. We provide a qualitative analysis of the station functions and user profiles for the Washington D.C. metro and show how our method supports spatiotemporal intra-city mobility exploration.

Conditional-UNet: A Condition-aware Deep Model for Coherent Human Activity Recognition From Wearables

Recognizing human activities from multi-channel time series data collected from wearable sensors is ever more practical. However, in real-world conditions, coherent activities and body movements could happen at the same time, like moving head during walking or sitting. A new problem, so-called "Coherent Human Activity Recognition (Co-HAR)", is more complicated than normal multi-class classification tasks since signals of different movements are mixed and interfered with each other. On the other side, we consider such Co-HAR as a dense labelling problem that classify each sample on a time step with a label to provide high-fidelity and duration-varied support to applications. In this paper, a novel condition-aware deep architecture "Conditional-UNet" is developed to allow dense labeling for Co-HAR problem. We also contribute a first-of-its-kind Co-HAR dataset for head movement recognition under walk or sit condition for future research. Experiments on head gesture recognition show that our model achieve overall 2%-3% performance gain of F1 score over existing state-of-the-art deep methods, and more importantly, systematic and comprehensive improvements on real head gesture classes.

A Robust Real-Time Computing-based Environment Sensing System for Intelligent Vehicle

For intelligent vehicles, sensing the 3D environment is the first but crucial step. In this paper, we build a real-time advanced driver assistance system based on a low-power mobile platform. The system is a real-time multi-scheme integrated innovation system, which combines stereo matching algorithm with machine learning based obstacle detection approach and takes advantage of the distributed computing technology of a mobile platform with GPU and CPUs. First of all, a multi-scale fast MPV (Multi-Path-Viterbi) stereo matching algorithm is proposed, which can generate robust and accurate disparity map. Then a machine learning, which is based on fusion technology of monocular and binocular, is applied to detect the obstacles. We also advance an automatic fast calibration mechanism based on Zhang's calibration method. Finally, the distributed computing and reasonable data flow programming are applied to ensure the operational efficiency of the system. The experimental results show that the system can achieve robust and accurate real-time environment perception for intelligent vehicles, which can be directly used in the commercial real-time intelligent driving applications.

A Novel Feature Representation for Single-Channel Heartbeat Classification based on Adaptive Fourier Decomposition

This paper proposes a novel approach for heartbeat classification from single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) signals based on the novel adaptive Fourier decomposition (AFD). AFD is a recently developed signal processing tool that provides useful morphological features, referred to as AFD-derived instantaneous frequency (IF) features, that are different from those provided by traditional tools. A support vector machine (SVM) classifier is trained with the AFD-derived IF features, ECG landmark features, and RR interval features. To evaluate the performance of the trained classifier, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standard is applied to the publicly available benchmark databases, including MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and MIT-BIH supraventricular arrhythmia database, to classify heartbeats from single-lead ECG. The overall performance in terms of sensitivities and positive predictive values is comparable to the state-of-the-art automatic heartbeat classification algorithms based on two-leads ECG.

A Novel Blaschke Unwinding Adaptive Fourier Decomposition based Signal Compression Algorithm with Application on ECG Signals

This paper presents a novel signal compression algorithm based on the Blaschke unwinding adaptive Fourier decomposition (AFD). The Blaschke unwinding AFD is a newly developed signal decomposition theory. It utilizes the Nevanlinna factorization and the maximal selection principle in each decomposition step, and achieves a faster convergence rate with higher fidelity. The proposed compression algorithm is applied to the electrocardiogram signal. To assess the performance of the proposed compression algorithm, in addition to the generic assessment criteria, we consider the less discussed criteria related to the clinical needs -- for the heart rate variability analysis purpose, how accurate the R peak information is preserved is evaluated. The experiments are conducted on the MIT-BIH arrhythmia benchmark database. The results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than other state-of-the-art approaches. Meanwhile, it also well preserves the R peak information.

Letter of Intent: Jinping Neutrino Experiment

Jinping Neutrino Experiment (Jinping) is proposed to significantly improve measurements on solar neutrinos and geoneutrinos in China Jinping Laboratory - a lab with a number of unparalleled features, thickest overburden, lowest reactor neutrino background, etc., which identify it as the world-best low-energy neutrino laboratory. The proposed experiment will have target mass of 4 kilotons of liquid scintillator or water-based liquid scintillator, with a fiducial mass of 2 kilotons for neutrino-electron scattering events and 3 kilotons for inverse-beta interaction events. A number of initial sensitivities studies have been carried out, including on the transition phase for the solar neutrinos oscillation from the vacuum to the matter effect, the discovery of solar neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle, the resolution of the high and low metallicity hypotheses, and the unambiguous separation on U and Th cascade decays from the dominant crustal anti-electron neutrinos in China.

Method of Studying $Λ_b^0$ decays with one missing particle

A new technique is discussed that can be applied to $Λ_b^0$ baryon decays where decays with one missing particle can be discerned from background and their branching fractions determined, along with other properties of the decays. Applications include measurements of the CKM elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, selected charmless decays, and detection of any exotic objects coupling to $b\to s$ decays, such as the inflaton.

Evolution of Interlayer Coupling in Twisted MoS2 Bilayers

Van der Waals (vdW) coupling is emerging as a powerful method to engineer and tailor physical properties of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials. In graphene/graphene and graphene/boron-nitride structures it leads to interesting physical phenomena ranging from new van Hove singularities1-4 and Fermi velocity renormalization5, 6 to unconventional quantum Hall effects7 and Hofstadter's butterfly pattern8-12. 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), another system of predominantly vdW-coupled atomically thin layers13, 14, can also exhibit interesting but different coupling phenomena because TMDCs can be direct or indirect bandgap semiconductors15, 16. Here, we present the first study on the evolution of interlayer coupling with twist angles in as-grown MoS2 bilayers. We find that an indirect bandgap emerges in bilayers with any stacking configuration, but the bandgap size varies appreciably with the twist angle: it shows the largest redshift for AA- and AB-stacked bilayers, and a significantly smaller but constant redshift for all other twist angles. The vibration frequency of the out-of-plane phonon in MoS2 shows similar twist angle dependence. Our observations, together with ab initio calculations, reveal that this evolution of interlayer coupling originates from the repulsive steric effects, which leads to different interlayer separations between the two MoS2 layers in different stacking configurations.

Use of B->J/ψf0 decays to discern the q anti-q or tetraquark nature of scalar mesons

We consider the relative decay rates of B0 and Bs mesons into a Jψ plus a light scalar meson either the f0(500) (σ) or the f0(980). We show that it is possible to distinguish between the quark content of the scalars being quark-antiquark or tetraquark by measuring specific ratios of decay rates. Using current data we determine the ratio of form-factors in Bs->Jψf0(980) with respect to B0->Jψf0(500) decays to be 1.02(+0.14, -0.04) at a four-momentum transfer squared equal to the mass of the Jψ meson squared. In the case where these light mesons are considered to be quark-antiquark states, we give a determination of the mixing angle between strange and light quark states of less than 28 degrees at 90% confidence level. We also discuss the use of a similar ratio to investigate the structure of other isospin singlet states.

Time-dependent Dalitz-plot formalism for B_q -> J/ψ h+ h-

A formalism for measuring time-dependent CP violation in B_q -> J/ψh+ h- decays with J/ψ-> mu+ mu- is developed for the general case where there can be many h+ h- final states of different angular momentum present. Here h refers to any spinless meson. The decay amplitude is derived using similar considerations as those in a Daltiz like analysis of three-body spinless mesons taking into account the fact that the J/ψis spin-1, and the various interferences allowed between different final states. Implementation of this procedure can, in principle, lead to the use of a larger number of final states for CP violation studies.

Measuring the CP Violating Phase in Bs Mixing Using Bs -> J/ψf_0(980)

We show that the decay Bs -> J/psi f0(980), f0(980)->pi+ pi- can be used to measure the CP violating phase in Bs mixing, -2β_s, and estimate the sensitivity as +/- 0.050 rad, for 2/fb of LHCb data. After adding in the related Bs -> J/psi eta', η' -> rho gamma mode, the sensitivity improves to +/- 0.044 rad. Use of these CP eigenstates obviates the need for a transversity analysis that must be used in the case of Bs -> J/psi phi decays.

S-waves and the Measurement of CP Violating Phases in Bs Decays

Heavy, as yet undiscovered particles, can affect measurements of CP violation in the B system. Measuring CP violation in the Bs system provides an excellent place to observe such effects since Standard Model sources are predicted to produce very small effects. The angle -2beta_s, the "phase of Bs-\bar{B}s mixing," thought to be best measured in Bs -> J/psiϕdecays is of order -0.04, while the CP violating asymmetry in Bs -> ϕϕis predicted to be zero, due to the cancellation of the mixing phase with the decay phase. Recent measurements of β_s in J/psiϕ, while not definitive, are much larger than the Standard Model predictions. Measurements in the B^o and Ds+ systems of analogous modes point toward a 5-10% contamination of S-wave K+K- under the ϕpeak. This S-wave was not taken into account in these recent analyses. Furthermore this S-wave can also materialize as a f0(980) meson that decays to π+π-, making the final state J/psi f0 useful for measuring β_s with the added advantage of not requiring an angular analysis. Rate estimates, while not precise, predict four to five times fewer such events than those in the J/psiϕmode. The error on β_s, however, may be similar. We also remark on S-wave problems with the Bs -> ϕϕmode, and possible systematic checks using Bs -> ϕf0.

Measurements of D and Ds decay constants at CLEO

Using CLEO data collected at 3370 MeV and 4170 MeV, we determine fD = (205.8 +- 8.5 +- 2.5) MeV and an interim preliminary value of fDs = (267.9 +- 8.2 +- 3.9) MeV, where both results are radiatively corrected. They agree with the recent most precise unquenched Lattice-QCD calculation for the D+, but do not for the Ds. Several consequences are discussed.

Dalitz Plot Analyses at CLEO-c

We present several recent analyses of Dalitz plots from the CLEO-c experiment, including published and preliminary analyses of D+ to pi- pi+ pi+, D+ to K- pi+ pi+, and D0 to K0_{S,L} pi+ pi- decays. More information on these analyses can be found in References [1-3]. New preliminary analyses we present include a search for CP asymmetry in D+ to K+ K- pi+ decays and a Dalitz plot analysis of D0 to K0_{S} pi0 pi0. We report on a search for the CP asymmetry in the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay D+ to K+ K- pi+ using a data sample of 572 pb^{-1} accumulated with the CLEO-c detector and taken at the e+ e- to psi(3770) resonance. We have searched for CP asymmetries using a Dalitz plot based analysis that determines the amplitudes and relative phases of the intermediate states. We also use a 281 pb^{-1} CLEO-c data sample taken at the e+ e- to psi(3770) resonance to study the D0 to K0_S pi0 pi0 Dalitz plot. Our nominal fit includes the K0_S, K*(892), f_0(980), f_0(1370), and K*(1680) resonances.
