Learning-based Real-time Detection of Intrinsic Reflectional Symmetry

Reflectional symmetry is ubiquitous in nature. While extrinsic reflectional symmetry can be easily parametrized and detected, intrinsic symmetry is much harder due to the high solution space. Previous works usually solve this problem by voting or sampling, which suffer from high computational cost and randomness. In this paper, we propose \YL{a} learning-based approach to intrinsic reflectional symmetry detection. Instead of directly finding symmetric point pairs, we parametrize this self-isometry using a functional map matrix, which can be easily computed given the signs of Laplacian eigenfunctions under the symmetric mapping. Therefore, we train a novel deep neural network to predict the sign of each eigenfunction under symmetry, which in addition takes the first few eigenfunctions as intrinsic features to characterize the mesh while avoiding coping with the connectivity explicitly. Our network aims at learning the global property of functions, and consequently converts the problem defined on the manifold to the functional domain. By disentangling the prediction of the matrix into separated basis, our method generalizes well to new shapes and is invariant under perturbation of eigenfunctions. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the robustness of our method in challenging cases, including different topology and incomplete shapes with holes. By avoiding random sampling, our learning-based algorithm is over 100 times faster than state-of-the-art methods, and meanwhile, is more robust, achieving higher correspondence accuracy in commonly used metrics.

LaplacianNet: Learning on 3D Meshes with Laplacian Encoding and Pooling

3D models are commonly used in computer vision and graphics. With the wider availability of mesh data, an efficient and intrinsic deep learning approach to processing 3D meshes is in great need. Unlike images, 3D meshes have irregular connectivity, requiring careful design to capture relations in the data. To utilize the topology information while staying robust under different triangulation, we propose to encode mesh connectivity using Laplacian spectral analysis, along with Mesh Pooling Blocks (MPBs) that can split the surface domain into local pooling patches and aggregate global information among them. We build a mesh hierarchy from fine to coarse using Laplacian spectral clustering, which is flexible under isometric transformation. Inside the MPBs there are pooling layers to collect local information and multi-layer perceptrons to compute vertex features with increasing complexity. To obtain the relationships among different clusters, we introduce a Correlation Net to compute a correlation matrix, which can aggregate the features globally by matrix multiplication with cluster features. Our network architecture is flexible enough to be used on meshes with different numbers of vertices. We conduct several experiments including shape segmentation and classification, and our LaplacianNet outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms for these tasks on ShapeNet and COSEG datasets.

Multiobject fusion with minimum information loss

Generalized covariance intersection (GCI) has been effective in fusing multiobject densities from multiple agents for multitarget tracking and mapping purposes. From an information-theoretic viewpoint, it has been shown that GCI fusion essentially minimizes the weighted information gain (WIG) from local densities to the fused one. In this paper, the interest is in the fusion rule that dually minimizes the weighted information loss (WIL) and it turns out that such a fusion rule is consistent with the so-called linear opinion pool (LOP). However, the LOP cannot be directly applied to multiobject fusion since the resulting fused multiobject density (FMD), in general, no longer belongs to the same family of the local ones, thus it cannot be utilized as prior information for the next recursion in the context of Bayesian multiobject filtering. In order to overcome such a difficulty, the principle of minimizing WIL is further exploited in that the optimal FMD in the same family of the local ones is looked for. Implementation issues relative to the proposed minimum WIL (MWIL) fusion rule are discussed. Finally, the performance of the MWIL rule is assessed via simulation experiments concerning distributed multitarget tracking over a wireless sensor network.

SDM-NET: Deep Generative Network for Structured Deformable Mesh

We introduce SDM-NET, a deep generative neural network which produces structured deformable meshes. Specifically, the network is trained to generate a spatial arrangement of closed, deformable mesh parts, which respect the global part structure of a shape collection, e.g., chairs, airplanes, etc. Our key observation is that while the overall structure of a 3D shape can be complex, the shape can usually be decomposed into a set of parts, each homeomorphic to a box, and the finer-scale geometry of the part can be recovered by deforming the box. The architecture of SDM-NET is that of a two-level variational autoencoder (VAE). At the part level, a PartVAE learns a deformable model of part geometries. At the structural level, we train a Structured Parts VAE (SP-VAE), which jointly learns the part structure of a shape collection and the part geometries, ensuring a coherence between global shape structure and surface details. Through extensive experiments and comparisons with the state-of-the-art deep generative models of shapes, we demonstrate the superiority of SDM-NET in generating meshes with visual quality, flexible topology, and meaningful structures, which benefit shape interpolation and other subsequently modeling tasks.

VV-Net: Voxel VAE Net with Group Convolutions for Point Cloud Segmentation

We present a novel algorithm for point cloud segmentation. Our approach transforms unstructured point clouds into regular voxel grids, and further uses a kernel-based interpolated variational autoencoder (VAE) architecture to encode the local geometry within each voxel. Traditionally, the voxel representation only comprises Boolean occupancy information which fails to capture the sparsely distributed points within voxels in a compact manner. In order to handle sparse distributions of points, we further employ radial basis functions (RBF) to compute a local, continuous representation within each voxel. Our approach results in a good volumetric representation that effectively tackles noisy point cloud datasets and is more robust for learning. Moreover, we further introduce group equivariant CNN to 3D, by defining the convolution operator on a symmetry group acting on $\mathbb{Z}^3$ and its isomorphic sets. This improves the expressive capacity without increasing parameters, leading to more robust segmentation results. We highlight the performance on standard benchmarks and show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art segmentation algorithms on the ShapeNet and S3DIS datasets.

Mesh Variational Autoencoders with Edge Contraction Pooling

3D shape analysis is an important research topic in computer vision and graphics. While existing methods have generalized image-based deep learning to meshes using graph-based convolutions, the lack of an effective pooling operation restricts the learning capability of their networks. In this paper, we propose a novel pooling operation for mesh datasets with the same connectivity but different geometry, by building a mesh hierarchy using mesh simplification. For this purpose, we develop a modified mesh simplification method to avoid generating highly irregularly sized triangles. Our pooling operation effectively encodes the correspondence between coarser and finer meshes in the hierarchy. We then present a variational auto-encoder structure with the edge contraction pooling and graph-based convolutions, to explore probability latent spaces of 3D surfaces. Our network requires far fewer parameters than the original mesh VAE and thus can handle denser models thanks to our new pooling operation and convolutional kernels. Our evaluation also shows that our method has better generalization ability and is more reliable in various applications, including shape generation, shape interpolation and shape embedding.

Economic Viability of Data Trading with Rollover

Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are providing more flexible wireless data services to attract subscribers and increase revenues. For example, the data trading market enables user-flexibility by allowing users to sell leftover data to or buy extra data from each other. The rollover mechanism enables time-flexibility by allowing a user to utilize his own leftover data from the previous month in the current month. In this paper, we investigate the economic viability of offering the data trading market together with the rollover mechanism, to gain a deeper understanding of the interrelationship between the user-flexibility and the time-flexibility. We formulate the interactions between the MNO and mobile users as a multi-slot dynamic game. Specifically, in each time slot (e.g., every day), the MNO first determines the selling and buying prices with the goal of revenue maximization, then each user decides his trading action (by solving a dynamic programming problem) to maximize his long-term payoff. Due to the availability of monthly data rollover, a user's daily trading decision corresponds to a dynamic programming problem with two time scales (i.e., day-to-day and month-to-month). Our analysis reveals an optimal trading policy with a target interval structure, specified by a buy-up-to threshold and a sell-down-to threshold in each time slot. Moreover, we show that the rollover mechanism makes users sell less and buy more data given the same trading prices, hence it increases the total demand while decreasing the total supply in the data trading market. Finally, numerical results based on real-world data unveil that the time-flexible rollover mechanism plays a positive role in the user-flexible data trading market, increasing the MNO's revenue by 25% and all users' payoff by 17% on average.

Multi-Cap Optimization for Wireless Data Plans with Time Flexibility

An effective way for a Mobile network operator (MNO) to improve its revenue is price discrimination, i.e., providing different combinations of data caps and subscription fees. Rollover data plan (allowing the unused data in the current month to be used in the next month) is an innovative data mechanism with time flexibility. In this paper, we study the MNO's optimal multi-cap data plans with time flexibility in a realistic asymmetric information scenario. Specifically, users are associated with multi-dimensional private information, and the MNO designs a contract (with different data caps and subscription fees) to induce users to truthfully reveal their private information. This problem is quite challenging due to the multi-dimensional private information. We address the challenge in two aspects. First, we find that a feasible contract (satisfying incentive compatibility and individual rationality) should allocate the data caps according to users' willingness-to-pay (captured by the slopes of users' indifference curves). Second, for the non-convex data cap allocation problem, we propose a Dynamic Quota Allocation Algorithm, which has a low complexity and guarantees the global optimality. Numerical results show that the time-flexible data mechanisms increase both the MNO's profit (25% on average) and users' payoffs (8.2% on average) under price discrimination.

Hybrid Pricing for Mobile Collaborative Internet Access

Mobile Collaborative Internet Access (MCA) enables mobile users to share their Internet through flexible tethering arrangements. This can potentially make better use of network resources. However, from a mobile network operator's (MNO's) viewpoint, it can either reduce revenue or increase congestion, and thus has been blocked by some MNOs in practice. We propose a hybrid pricing framework for MNOs who charge users separately for access and tethering. This scheme serves to coordinate the tethering decisions of mobile users with MNO network management objectives. We analyze the MNOs' equilibrium pricing strategies in both cooperative and competitive scenarios. In the cooperative scenario, at the equilibrium, each user's cost is independent of any chosen tethering links. We then characterize the optimal hybrid pricing strategies of MNOs in this scenario. For the competitive scenario, we formulate the MNOs' competitive interactions as a pricing game, and we show that MNO competition leads to equalized prices for users if an equilibrium exists but does not guarantee its existence. Both insights motivate a quantity competition game, which is shown to guarantee an equilibrium. Simulation results show that in scenarios of interest the proposed hybrid pricing schemes can double both MNOs' profit and users' payoff and such improvements increase with the degree of network heterogeneity.

Duopoly Competition for Mobile Data Plans with Time Flexibility

The growing competition drives the mobile network operators (MNOs) to explore adding time flexibility to the traditional data plan, which consists of a monthly subscription fee, a data cap, and a per-unit fee for exceeding the data cap. The rollover data plan, which allows the unused data of the previous month to be used in the current month, provides the subscribers with the time flexibility. In this paper, we formulate two MNOs' market competition as a three-stage game, where the MNOs decide their data mechanisms (traditional or rollover) in Stage I and the pricing strategies in Stage II, and then users make their subscription decisions in Stage III. Different from the monopoly market where an MNO always prefers the rollover mechanism over the traditional plan in terms of profit, MNOs may adopt different data mechanisms at an equilibrium. Specifically, the high-QoS MNO would gradually abandon the rollover mechanism as its QoS advantage diminishes. Meanwhile, the low-QoS MNO would progressively upgrade to the rollover mechanism. The numerical results show that the market competition significantly limits MNOs' profits, but both MNOs obtain higher profits with the possible choice of the rollover data plan.

Event-triggered distributed Bayes filter

The aim of this paper is to devise a strategy that is able to reduce communication bandwidth and, consequently, energy consumption in the context of distributed state estimation over a peer-to-peer sensor network. Specifically, a distributed Bayes filter with event-triggered communication is developed by enforcing each node to transmit its local information to the neighbors only when the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the current local posterior and the one predictable from the last transmission exceeds a preset threshold. The stability of the proposed eventtriggered distributed Bayes filter is proved in the linear-Gaussian (Kalman filter) case. The performance of the proposed algorithm is also evaluated through simulation experiments concerning a target tracking application.

Distributed Joint Sensor Registration and Multitarget Tracking Via Sensor Network

This paper addresses distributed registration of a sensor network for multitarget tracking. Each sensor gets measurements of the target position in a local coordinate frame, having no knowledge about the relative positions (referred to as drift parameters) and azimuths (referred to as orientation parameters) of its neighboring nodes. The multitarget set is modeled as an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) cluster random finite set (RFS), and a consensus cardinality probability hypothesis density (CPHD) filter is run over the network to recursively compute in each node the posterior RFS density. Then a suitable cost function, xpressing the discrepancy between the local posteriors in terms of averaged Kullback-Leibler divergence, is minimized with respect to the drift and orientation parameters for sensor registration purposes. In this way, a computationally feasible optimization approach for joint sensor registraton and multitarget tracking is devised. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through simulation experiments on both tree networks and networks with cycles, as well as with both linear and nonlinear sensors.

Temporal Upsampling of Depth Maps Using a Hybrid Camera

In recent years, consumer-level depth cameras have been adopted for various applications. However, they often produce depth maps at only a moderately high frame rate (approximately 30 frames per second), preventing them from being used for applications such as digitizing human performance involving fast motion. On the other hand, low-cost, high-frame-rate video cameras are available. This motivates us to develop a hybrid camera that consists of a high-frame-rate video camera and a low-frame-rate depth camera and to allow temporal interpolation of depth maps with the help of auxiliary color images. To achieve this, we develop a novel algorithm that reconstructs intermediate depth maps and estimates scene flow simultaneously. We test our algorithm on various examples involving fast, non-rigid motions of single or multiple objects. Our experiments show that our scene flow estimation method is more precise than a tracking-based method and the state-of-the-art techniques.

Robust Transmissions in Wireless Powered Multi-Relay Networks with Chance Interference Constraints

In this paper, we consider a wireless powered multi-relay network in which a multi-antenna hybrid access point underlaying a cellular system transmits information to distant receivers. Multiple relays capable of energy harvesting are deployed in the network to assist the information transmission. The hybrid access point can wirelessly supply energy to the relays, achieving multi-user gains from signal and energy cooperation. We propose a joint optimization for signal beamforming of the hybrid access point as well as wireless energy harvesting and collaborative beamforming strategies of the relays. The objective is to maximize network throughput subject to probabilistic interference constraints at the cellular user equipment. We formulate the throughput maximization with both the time-switching and power-splitting schemes, which impose very different couplings between the operating parameters for wireless power and information transfer. Although the optimization problems are inherently non-convex, they share similar structural properties that can be leveraged for efficient algorithm design. In particular, by exploiting monotonicity in the throughput, we maximize it iteratively via customized polyblock approximation with reduced complexity. The numerical results show that the proposed algorithms can achieve close to optimal performance in terms of the energy efficiency and throughput.

Exploring Time Flexibility in Wireless Data Plans

Recently, the mobile network operators (MNOs) are exploring more time flexibility with the rollover data plan, which allows the unused data from the previous month to be used in the current month. Motivated by this industry trend, we propose a general framework for designing and optimizing the mobile data plan with time flexibility. Such a framework includes the traditional data plan, two existing rollover data plans, and a new credit data plan as special cases. Under this framework, we formulate a monopoly MNO's optimal data plan design as a three-stage Stackelberg game: In Stage I, the MNO decides the data mechanism; In Stage II, the MNO further decides the corresponding data cap, subscription fee, and the per-unit fee; Finally in Stage III, users make subscription decisions based on their own characteristics. Through backward induction, we analytically characterize the MNO's profit-maximizing data plan and the corresponding users' subscriptions. Furthermore, we conduct a market survey to estimate the distribution of users' two-dimensional characteristics, and evaluate the performance of different data mechanisms using the real data. We find that a more time-flexible data mechanism increases MNO's profit and users' payoffs, hence improves the social welfare.

Learning Bidirectional LSTM Networks for Synthesizing 3D Mesh Animation Sequences

In this paper, we present a novel method for learning to synthesize 3D mesh animation sequences with long short-term memory (LSTM) blocks and mesh-based convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Synthesizing realistic 3D mesh animation sequences is a challenging and important task in computer animation. To achieve this, researchers have long been focusing on shape analysis to develop new interpolation and extrapolation techniques. However, such techniques have limited learning capabilities and therefore can produce unrealistic animation. Deep architectures that operate directly on mesh sequences remain unexplored, due to the following major barriers: meshes with irregular triangles, sequences containing rich temporal information and flexible deformations. To address these, we utilize convolutional neural networks defined on triangular meshes along with a shape deformation representation to extract useful features, followed by LSTM cells that iteratively process the features. To allow completion of a missing mesh sequence from given endpoints, we propose a new weight-shared bidirectional structure. The bidirectional generation loss also helps mitigate error accumulation over iterations. Benefiting from all these technical advances, our approach outperforms existing methods in sequence prediction and completion both qualitatively and quantitatively. Moreover, this network can also generate follow-up frames conditioned on initial shapes and improve the accuracy as more bootstrap models are provided, which other works in the geometry processing domain cannot achieve.

Enabling Edge Cooperation in Tactile Internet via 3C Resource Sharing

Tactile Internet often requires (i) the ultra-reliable and ultra-responsive network connection and (ii) the proactive and intelligent actuation at edge devices. A promising approach to address these two requirements is to enable mobile edge devices to share their communication, computation, and caching (3C) resources via device-to-device (D2D) connections. In this paper, we propose a general 3C resource sharing framework, which includes many existing 1C/2C sharing models in the literature as special cases. Comparing with 1C/2C models, the proposed 3C framework can further improve the resource utilization efficiency by offering more flexibilities in the device cooperation and resource scheduling. As a typical example, we focus on the energy utilization under the proposed 3C framework. Specifically, we formulate an energy consumption minimization problem under the 3C framework, which is an integer non-convex optimization problem. To solve the problem, we first transform it into an equivalent integer linear programming problem that is much easier to solve. Then, we propose a heuristic algorithm based on linear programming, which can further reduce the computation time and produce a result that is empirically close to the optimal solution. Moreover, we evaluate the energy reduction due to the 3C sharing both analytically and numerically. Numerical results show that, comparing with the existing 1C/2C approaches, the proposed 3C sharing framework can reduce the total energy consumption by 83.8% when the D2D energy is negligible. The energy reduction is still 27.5% when the D2D transmission energy per unit time is twice as large as the cellular transmission energy per unit time.

First Investigation on the Radiation Field of the Gas-Filled Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum

A novel ignition hohlraum named three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) is designed for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is orthogonally jointed of three cylindrical hohlraums. The first experiment on the radiation field of TACH was performed on Shenguang III laser facility. 24 laser beams were elected and injected into 6 LEHs quasi-symmetrically. Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. Plasma filling cannot be obviously suppressed even with 0.5 atm pressure gas in the small hohlraum. Backscattering fractions of vacuum hohlraum and gas-filled hohlraum are both lower than 2%. Experimental study of this new kind of hohlraum can provide guidance for future target design and implosion experiment.
