Robust flat bands in twisted trilayer graphene quasicrystals

Moiré structures formed by twisting three layers of graphene with two independent twist angles present an ideal platform for studying correlated quantum phenomena, as an infinite set of angle pairs is predicted to exhibit flat bands. Moreover, the two mutually incommensurate moiré patterns among the twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) can form highly tunable moiré quasicrystals. This enables us to extend correlated physics in periodic moiré crystals to quasiperiodic systems. However, direct local characterization of the structure of the moiré quasicrystals and of the resulting flat bands are still lacking, which is crucial to fundamental understanding and control of the correlated moiré physics. Here, we demonstrate the existence of flat bands in a series of TTGs with various twist angle pairs and show that the TTGs with different magic angle pairs are strikingly dissimilar in their atomic and electronic structures. The lattice relaxation and the interference between moiré patterns are highly dependent on the twist angles. Our direct spatial mappings, supported by theoretical calculations, reveal that the localization of the flat bands exhibits distinct symmetries in different regions of the moiré quasicrystals.

Stability of strong viscous shock wave under periodic perturbation for 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system in the half space

In this paper, a viscous shock wave under space-periodic perturbation of 1-D isentropic Navier-Stokes system in the half space is investigated. It is shown that if the initial periodic perturbation around the viscous shock wave is small, then the solution time asymptotically tends to a viscous shock wave with a shift partially determined by the periodic oscillations. Moreover, the strength of {the} shock wave could be arbitrarily large. This result essentially improves the previous work " A. Matsumura, M. Mei, Convergence to travelling fronts of solutions of the p-system with viscosity in the presence of a boundary. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 146 (1999), no. 1, 1-22." where the strength of shock wave is sufficiently small and the initial periodic oscillations vanish.

Relativistic artificial molecules with tunable coupling and orbitals

In a molecule formed by two atoms, energy difference between bonding and antibonding orbitals should depend on distance of the two atoms. However, exploring molecular orbitals of two natural atoms with tunable distance has remained an outstanding experimental challenge. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) can be viewed as relativistic artificial atoms, therefore, offering a unique platform to study molecular physics. Here, through scanning tunneling microscope (STM), we create and directly visualize the formation process of relativistic artificial molecules based on two coupled GQDs with tunable distance. Our study indicates that energy difference between the bonding and antibonding orbitals of the lowest quasibound state increases linearly with inverse distance of the two GQDs due to the relativistic nature of the artificial molecule. For quasibound states with higher orbital momenta, the coupling between these states leads to half-energy spacing of the confined states because the length of the molecular-like orbit is about twice that of the atomic-like orbit. Evolution from ring-like whispering-gallery modes in the artificial atoms to figure-eight orbitals in the artificial molecules is directly imaged. The ability to resolve the coupling and orbitals of the relativistic artificial molecule at the nanoscale level yields insights into the behavior of quantum-relativistic matter.

X-Ray Constraints on the Hot Gaseous Corona of Edge-on Late-type Galaxies in Virgo

We present a systematic study of the putative hot gas corona around late-type galaxies (LTGs) residing in the Virgo cluster, based on archival Chandra observations. Our sample consists of 21 nearly edge-on galaxies representing a star formation rate (SFR) range of ($0.2-3\rm~M_\odot~yr^{-1}$) a stellar mass ($M_*$) range of $(0.2-10) \times 10^{10}\rm~M_{\odot}$, the majority of which have not been explored with high-sensitivity X-ray observations so far. Significant extraplanar diffuse X-ray (0.5-2 keV) emission is detected in only three LTGs, which are also the three galaxies with the highest SFR. A stacking analysis is performed for the remaining galaxies without individual detection, dividing the whole sample into two subsets based on SFR, stellar mass, or specific SFR. Only the high-SFR bin yields a significant detection, which has a value of $L\rm_X \sim3\times10^{38}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$ per galaxy. The stacked extraplanar X-ray signals of the Virgo LTGs are consistent with the empirical $L\rm_X - SFR$ and $L\rm_X - M_*$ relations found among highly inclined disk galaxies in the field, but appear to be systematically lower than that of a comparison sample of simulated cluster star-formation galaxies identified from the Illustris-TNG100 simulation. The apparent paucity of hot gas coronae in the sampled Virgo LTGs might be understood as the net outcome of the long-lasting effect of ram pressure stripping exerted by the hot intra-cluster medium and in-disk star-forming activity acting on shorter timescales. A better understanding of the roles of environmental effects in regulating the hot gas content of cluster galaxies invites sensitive X-ray observations for a large galaxy sample.

One-dimensional moire chains with partially-filled flat bands in two-dimensional twisted bilayer WSe2

Two-dimensional (2D) moire systems based on twisted bilayer graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides provide a promising platform to investigate emergent phenomena driven by strong electron-electron interactions in partially-filled flat bands1-11. A natural question arises: is it possible to expand the 2D correlated moire physics to one-dimensional (1D)? This requires selectively doping of 1D moire chain embedded in the 2D moire systems, which is an outstanding challenge in experiment and seems to be not within the grasp of today's technology. Therefore, an experimental demonstration of the 1D moire chain with partially-filled flat bands remains absent. Here we show that we can introduce 1D boundaries, separating two regions with different twist angles, in twisted bilayer WSe2 (tWSe2) by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and demonstrate that the flat bands of moire sites along the 1D boundaries can be selectively filled. The charge and discharge states of correlated moire electrons in the 1D moire chain can be directly imaged and manipulated by combining a back-gate voltage with the STM bias. Our results open the door for realizing new correlated electronic states of the 1D moire chain in 2D systems.

Global Solutions of the Compressible Euler-Poisson Equations with Large Initial Data of Spherical Symmetry

We are concerned with a global existence theory for finite-energy solutions of the multidimensional Euler-Poisson equations for both compressible gaseous stars and plasmas with large initial data of spherical symmetry. One of the main challenges is the strengthening of waves as they move radially inward towards the origin, especially under the self-consistent gravitational field for gaseous stars. A fundamental unsolved problem is whether the density of the global solution forms a delta measure ({\it i.e.}, concentration) at the origin. To solve this problem, we develop a new approach for the construction of approximate solutions as the solutions of an appropriately formulated free boundary problem for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with a carefully adapted class of degenerate density-dependent viscosity terms, so that a rigorous convergence proof of the approximate solutions to the corresponding global solution of the compressible Euler-Poisson equations with large initial data of spherical symmetry can be obtained. Even though the density may blow up near the origin at a certain time, it is proved that no delta measure ({\it i.e.}, concentration) in space-time is formed in the vanishing viscosity limit for the finite-energy solutions of the compressible Euler-Poisson equations for both gaseous stars and plasmas in the physical regimes under consideration.

Tunable interfacial chemisorption with atomic-level precision in a graphene WSe2 heterostructure

It has long been an ultimate goal to introduce chemical doping at the atomic level to precisely tune properties of materials. Two-dimensional materials have natural advantage because of its highly-exposed surface atoms, however, it is still a grand challenge to achieve this goal experimentally. Here, we demonstrate the ability to introduce chemical doping in graphene with atomic-level precision by controlling chemical adsorption of individual Se atoms, which are extracted from the underneath WSe2, at the interface of graphene-WSe2 heterostructures. Our scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements, combined with first-principles calculations, reveal that individual Se atoms can chemisorbed on three possible positions in graphene, which generate distinct pseudospin-mediated atomic-scale vortices in graphene. We demonstrate that the chemisorbed positions of individual Se atoms can be manipulated by STM tip, which enables us to achieve atomic-scale controlling quantum interference of the pseudospin-mediated vortices in graphene. This result offers the promise of controlling properties of materials through chemical doping with atomic-level precision.

A representation for the Expected Signature of Brownian motion up to the first exit time of the planar unit disc

The signature of a sample path is a formal series of iterated integrals along the path. The expected signature of a stochastic process gives a summary of the process that is especially useful for studying stochastic differential equations driven by the process. Lyons-Ni derived a partial differential equation for the expected signature of Brownian motion, starting at a point z in a bounded domain, until it hits to boundary of the domain. We focus on the domain of planar unit disc centred at 0. Motivated by recently found explicit formulae for some terms in the expected signature of this process in terms of Bessel functions, we derive a tensor series representation for this expected signature, coming from from studying Lyons-Ni's PDE. Although the representation is rather involved, it simplifies significantly to give a formula for the polynomial leading order term in each tensor component of the expected signature.

Tunable Atomically Wide Electrostatic Barriers Embedded in a Graphene WSe2 Heterostructure

Inducing and controlling electrostatic barriers in two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials has shown extraordinary promise to enable control of charge carriers, and is key for the realization of nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic devices1-10. Because of their atomically thin nature, the 2D materials have a congenital advantage to construct the thinnest possible p-n junctions1,3,7,9,10. To realize the ultimate functional unit for future nanoscale devices, creating atomically wide electrostatic barriers embedded in 2D materials is desired and remains an extremely challenge. Here we report the creation and manipulation of atomically wide electrostatic barriers embedded in graphene WSe2 heterostructures. By using a STM tip, we demonstrate the ability to generate a one-dimensional (1D) atomically wide boundary between 1T-WSe2 domains and continuously tune positions of the boundary because of ferroelasticity of the 1T-WSe2. Our experiment indicates that the 1D boundary introduces atomically wide electrostatic barriers in graphene above it. Then the 1D electrostatic barrier changes a single graphene WSe2 heterostructure quantum dot from a relativistic artificial atom to a relativistic artificial molecule.

Global Solutions of the Compressible Euler-Poisson Equations for Plasma with Doping Profile for Large Initial Data of Spherical Symmetry

We establish the global-in-time existence of solutions of finite relative-energy for the multidimensional compressible Euler-Poisson equations for plasma with doping profile for large initial data of spherical symmetry. Both the total initial energy and the initial mass are allowed to be {\it unbounded}, and the doping profile is allowed to be of large variation. This is achieved by adapting a class of degenerate density-dependent viscosity terms, so that a rigorous proof of the inviscid limit of global weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with the density-dependent viscosity terms to the corresponding global solutions of the Euler-Poisson equations for plasma with doping profile can be established. New difficulties arise when tackling the non-zero varied doping profile, which have been overcome by establishing some novel estimates for the electric field terms so that the neutrality assumption on the initial data is avoided. In particular, we prove that no concentration is formed in the inviscid limit for the finite relative-energy solutions of the compressible Euler-Poisson equations with large doping profiles in plasma physics.

Modern Tontine with Transaction Costs

In this paper, we propose a new type of reversible modern tontine with transaction costs. The wealth of the retiree is divided into a bequest account and a tontine account. And consumption can only be withdrawn from the bequest account. Each transaction between the two accounts incurs fixed and proportional transaction costs depending on the transaction volume. The retiree dynamically controls the allocation policy between the two accounts and the consumption policy to maximize the consumption and bequest utilities. We formulate the optimization problem as a combined stochastic and impulse control problem with infinite time horizon, and characterize the value function as the unique viscosity solution of a HJBQVI (Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellmen quasi-variational inequality). The numerical results exhibit the V-shaped transaction region which consists of two stages. In the former stage, since longevity credits increase gradually, the retiree decreases the proportion of wealth in the tontine account to smooth the wealth and reduce the volatility. However, in the latter stage, the retiree increases the proportion of wealth in the tontine account to gamble for the considerable longevity credits.

Your Router is My Prober: Measuring IPv6 Networks via ICMP Rate Limiting Side Channels

Active Internet measurements face challenges when some measurements require many remote vantage points. In this paper, we propose a novel technique for measuring remote IPv6 networks via side channels in ICMP rate limiting, a required function for IPv6 nodes to limit the rate at which ICMP error messages are generated. This technique, iVantage, can to some extent use 1.1M remote routers distributed in 9.5k autonomous systems and 182 countries as our "vantage points". We apply iVantage to two different, but both challenging measurement tasks: 1) measuring the deployment of inbound source address validation (ISAV) and 2) measuring reachability between arbitrary Internet nodes. We accomplish these two tasks from only one local vantage point without controlling the targets or relying on other services within the target networks. Our large-scale ISAV measurements cover ~50% of all IPv6 autonomous systems and find ~79% of them are vulnerable to spoofing, which is the most large-scale measurement study of IPv6 ISAV to date. Our method for reachability measurements achieves over 80% precision and recall in our evaluation. Finally, we perform an Internet-wide measurement of the ICMP rate limiting implementations, present a detailed discussion on ICMP rate limiting, particularly the potential security and privacy risks in the mechanism of ICMP rate limiting, and provide possible mitigation measures. We make our code available to the community.

A Chandra X-ray Survey of Optically Selected Close Galaxy Pairs: Unexpectedly Low Occupation of Active Galactic Nuclei

High-resolution X-ray observations offer a unique tool for probing the still elusive connection between galaxy mergers and active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We present an analysis of nuclear X-ray emission in an optically selected sample of 92 close galaxy pairs (with projected separations $\lesssim 20$ kpc and line-of-sight velocity offsets $<$ 500 km s$^{-1}$) at low redshift ($\bar{z} \sim 0.07$), based on archival Chandra observations. The parent sample of galaxy pairs is constructed without imposing an optical classification of nuclear activity, thus is largely free of selection effect for or against the presence of an AGN. Nor is this sample biased for or against gas-rich mergers. An X-ray source is detected in 70 of the 184 nuclei, giving a detection rate of $38\%^{+5\%}_{-5\%}$, down to a 0.5-8 keV limiting luminosity of $\lesssim 10^{40}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$. The detected and undetected nuclei show no systematic difference in their host galaxy properties such as galaxy morphology, stellar mass and stellar velocity dispersion. When potential contamination from star formation is avoided (i.e., $L_{\rm 2-10~keV} > 10^{41}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$), the detection rate becomes $18\%^{+3\%}_{-3\%}$ (32/184), which shows no excess compared to the X-ray detection rate of a comparison sample of optically classified single AGNs. The fraction of pairs containing dual AGN is only $2\%^{+2\%}_{-2\%}$. Moreover, most nuclei at the smallest projected separations probed by our sample (a few kpc) have an unexpectedly low apparent X-ray luminosity and Eddington ratio, which cannot be solely explained by circumnuclear obscuration. These findings suggest that close galaxy interaction is not a sufficient condition for triggering a high level of AGN activity.

Optimal Mix Among PAYGO, EET and Individual Savings

In order to deal with the aging problem, pension system is actively transformed into the funded scheme. However, the funded scheme does not completely replace PAYGO (Pay as You Go) scheme and there exist heterogeneous mixes among PAYGO, EET (Exempt, Exempt, Taxed) and individual savings in different countries. In this paper, we establish the optimal mix by solving a Nash equilibrium between the pension participants and the government. Given the obligatory PAYGO and EET contribution rates, the participants choose the optimal asset allocation of the individual savings and the consumption policies to achieve the objective. The results extend the ``Samuelson-Aaron" criterion to age-dependent preference orderings. And we identify three critical ages to distinguish the multiple outcomes of preference orderings based on heterogeneous characteristic parameters. The government is fully aware of the optimal feedback of the participants. It chooses the optimal PAYGO and EET contribution rates to maximize the overall utility of the participants weighted by each cohort's population. As such, the negative population growth rate leads to the decline of the PAYGO attractiveness as well as the increase of the older cohorts' weight in the government decision-making. The optimal mix is the comprehensive result of the two effects.

Breakdown of self-cleaning mechanism for nanoscale interfacial substances in tiny-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Realization of high-quality van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with tailored properties by stacking two-dimensional (2D) layers requires atomically clean interfaces. Because of strong adhesion between the constituent layers, the vdW forces could drive trapped contaminants together into submicron-size bubbles, which leaves large interfacial areas atomically clean. Such a phenomenon is dubbed self-cleaning mechanism in 2D systems. Here, we demonstrate the breakdown of self-cleaning mechanism for nanoscale interfacial bubbles in tiny-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). In the tiny-angle TBG, there is a triangular network of domain boundaries due to structural reconstruction. Our experiments indicate that the bubbles will mainly move along the triangular network of domain boundaries when the sizes of the bubbles are comparable to that of an AA-stacking region in the TBG. When the size of the bubble is smaller than that of an AA-stacking region, the bubble becomes motionless and is fixed in the AA-stacking region because of its large out-of-plane corrugation. Our results reveal a substantial influence of the moiré superlattice on the motion of nanoscale interfacial substances.

Tailoring interfacial nanostructures at graphene/transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures

Integration of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdWs) materials with non-2D materials to realize mixed-dimensional heterostructures has potential for creating functional devices beyond the reach of existing materials and has long been a pursuit of the material science community. Here we report the patterning of monolayer/bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanostructures with nanometer-precision, tunable sizes and sites at interfaces of graphene/TMD heterostructures. Our experiments demonstrate that the TMD nanostructures can be created at selected positions of the interface using scanning tunneling microscope lithography and, more importantly, the sizes of the interfacial TMD nanostructures can be tuned with nanoscale precise by merging adjacent TMD nanostructures or by further tailoring. A structural phase transition from hexagonal phase in bulk TMD to monoclinic phase in the interfacial nanostructures is explicitly observed, which locally introduce well-defined electrostatic potentials on graphene. These results not only enable the creation of high-quality patterned p-n junctions in vdWs heterostructures, but also provide a new route to realize custom-designed mixed-dimensional heterostructures.

Experimental evidence for electron-electron interaction and spin-charge separation in graphene quantum dots

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) can exhibit a range of spectacular phenomena such as the Klein-tunneling-induced quasibound states1-6 and Berry-phase-tuned energy spectra7-15. According to previous studies, all these interesting quantum phenomena seem to be well understood in the free electron picture1-15. However, electronic motion in the GQDs is reduced to quantized orbits by quantum confinement, which implies that the kinetic energy may be comparable to or even smaller than the Coulomb energy of the quasiparticles, possibly resulting in exotic correlated phases in the GQDs. Here we present a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of gate-tunable GQDs in graphene/WSe2 heterostructure devices and report for the first time the observation of electron-electron interaction and correlation-induced spin-charge separation in the GQDs. Gating allows us to precise characterize effects of the electron-electron interaction on the energy spectra of the GQDs. By measuring density of states as a function of energy and position, we explicitly uncover two density waves with different velocities in the GQDs, attributing to spin-charge separation in real space.

Coexistence of Reconstructed and Unreconstructed Structures in Structural Transition Regime of Twisted Bilayer Graphene

In twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), a twist-angle-dependent competition between interlayer stacking energy and intralayer elastic energy results in flat rigid layers at large twist angles and lattice reconstruction at small twist angles. Despite enormous scientific interest and effort in the TBG, however, an experimental study of evolution from the rigid lattice to the reconstructed lattice as a function of twist angle is still missing. Here we present a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study to reveal the twist-angle-dependent lattice reconstruction in the TBG. Our experiment demonstrates that there is a transition regime between the rigid regime and the relaxed regime and, unexpectedly, the reconstructed and unreconstructed structures coexist in the transition regime. The coexistence of the two distinct structures in this regime may arise from subtle balance between the interlayer stacking energy and intralayer elastic energy in the TBG with intermediate moiré sizes.
