OmniZoomer: Learning to Move and Zoom in on Sphere at High-Resolution

Omnidirectional images (ODIs) have become increasingly popular, as their large field-of-view (FoV) can offer viewers the chance to freely choose the view directions in immersive environments such as virtual reality. The Möbius transformation is typically employed to further provide the opportunity for movement and zoom on ODIs, but applying it to the image level often results in blurry effect and aliasing problem. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning-based approach, called \textbf{OmniZoomer}, to incorporate the Möbius transformation into the network for movement and zoom on ODIs. By learning various transformed feature maps under different conditions, the network is enhanced to handle the increasing edge curvatures, which alleviates the blurry effect. Moreover, to address the aliasing problem, we propose two key components. Firstly, to compensate for the lack of pixels for describing curves, we enhance the feature maps in the high-resolution (HR) space and calculate the transformed index map with a spatial index generation module. Secondly, considering that ODIs are inherently represented in the spherical space, we propose a spherical resampling module that combines the index map and HR feature maps to transform the feature maps for better spherical correlation. The transformed feature maps are decoded to output a zoomed ODI. Experiments show that our method can produce HR and high-quality ODIs with the flexibility to move and zoom in to the object of interest. Complex unit lattice cell for low-emittance storage ring light source

To achieve the true diffraction-limited emittance of a storage ring light source, such as ~10 pm.rad for medium-energy electron beams, within a limited circumference, it is generally necessary to increase the number of bending magnets in a multi-bend achromat (MBA) lattice, as in the future upgrade plan of MAX IV with a 19BA replacing the current 7BA. However, this comes with extremely strong quadrupole and sextupole magnets and very limited space. The former can result in very small vacuum chambers, increasing the coupling impedance and thus enhancing the beam instabilities, and the latter can pose significant challenges in accommodating the necessary diagnostics and vacuum components. Inspired by the hybrid MBA lattice concept, in this paper we propose a new unit lattice concept called the complex unit lattice cell, which can reduce the magnet strengths and also save space. The complex unit cell is numerically studied using a simplified model. Then as an example, a 17BA lattice based on the complex unit cell concept is designed for a 3 GeV storage ring light source with a circumference of 537.6 m, which has a natural emittance of 19.3 pm.rad. This 17BA lattice is also compared with the 17BA lattice designed with conventional unit cells to showcase the benefits of the complex unit cell concept. This 17BA lattice also suggests a new type of MBA lattice, which we call the MBA lattice with semi-distributed chromatic correction.

Routing for Intermittently-Powered Sensing Systems

Recently, intermittent computing (IC) has received tremendous attention due to its high potential in perpetual sensing for Internet-of-Things (IoT). By harvesting ambient energy, battery-free devices can perform sensing intermittently without maintenance, thus significantly improving IoT sustainability. To build a practical intermittently-powered sensing system, efficient routing across battery-free devices for data delivery is essential. However, the intermittency of these devices brings new challenges, rendering existing routing protocols inapplicable. In this paper, we propose RICS, the first-of-its-kind routing scheme tailored for intermittently-powered sensing systems. RICS features two major designs, with the goal of achieving low-latency data delivery on a network built with battery-free devices. First, RICS incorporates a fast topology construction protocol for each IC node to establish a path towards the sink node with the least hop count. Second, RICS employs a low-latency message forwarding protocol, which incorporates an efficient synchronization mechanism and a novel technique called pendulum-sync to avoid the time-consuming repeated node synchronization. Our evaluation based on an implementation in OMNeT++ and comprehensive experiments with varying system settings show that RICS can achieve orders of magnitude latency reduction in data delivery compared with the baselines.

STS-GAN: Can We Synthesize Solid Texture with High Fidelity from Arbitrary 2D Exemplar?

Solid texture synthesis (STS), an effective way to extend a 2D exemplar to a 3D solid volume, exhibits advantages in computational photography. However, existing methods generally fail to accurately learn arbitrary textures, which may result in the failure to synthesize solid textures with high fidelity. In this paper, we propose a novel generative adversarial nets-based framework (STS-GAN) to extend the given 2D exemplar to arbitrary 3D solid textures. In STS-GAN, multi-scale 2D texture discriminators evaluate the similarity between the given 2D exemplar and slices from the generated 3D texture, promoting the 3D texture generator synthesizing realistic solid textures. Finally, experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can generate high-fidelity solid textures with similar visual characteristics to the 2D exemplar.

Benchmarking and Analyzing Robust Point Cloud Recognition: Bag of Tricks for Defending Adversarial Examples

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for 3D point cloud recognition are vulnerable to adversarial examples, threatening their practical deployment. Despite the many research endeavors have been made to tackle this issue in recent years, the diversity of adversarial examples on 3D point clouds makes them more challenging to defend against than those on 2D images. For examples, attackers can generate adversarial examples by adding, shifting, or removing points. Consequently, existing defense strategies are hard to counter unseen point cloud adversarial examples. In this paper, we first establish a comprehensive, and rigorous point cloud adversarial robustness benchmark to evaluate adversarial robustness, which can provide a detailed understanding of the effects of the defense and attack methods. We then collect existing defense tricks in point cloud adversarial defenses and then perform extensive and systematic experiments to identify an effective combination of these tricks. Furthermore, we propose a hybrid training augmentation methods that consider various types of point cloud adversarial examples to adversarial training, significantly improving the adversarial robustness. By combining these tricks, we construct a more robust defense framework achieving an average accuracy of 83.45\% against various attacks, demonstrating its capability to enabling robust learners. Look at the Neighbor: Distortion-aware Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Panoramic Semantic Segmentation

Endeavors have been recently made to transfer knowledge from the labeled pinhole image domain to the unlabeled panoramic image domain via Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA). The aim is to tackle the domain gaps caused by the style disparities and distortion problem from the non-uniformly distributed pixels of equirectangular projection (ERP). Previous works typically focus on transferring knowledge based on geometric priors with specially designed multi-branch network architectures. As a result, considerable computational costs are induced, and meanwhile, their generalization abilities are profoundly hindered by the variation of distortion among pixels. In this paper, we find that the pixels' neighborhood regions of the ERP indeed introduce less distortion. Intuitively, we propose a novel UDA framework that can effectively address the distortion problems for panoramic semantic segmentation. In comparison, our method is simpler, easier to implement, and more computationally efficient. Specifically, we propose distortion-aware attention (DA) capturing the neighboring pixel distribution without using any geometric constraints. Moreover, we propose a class-wise feature aggregation (CFA) module to iteratively update the feature representations with a memory bank. As such, the feature similarity between two domains can be consistently optimized. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance while remarkably reducing 80% parameters.

Dynamic PlenOctree for Adaptive Sampling Refinement in Explicit NeRF

The explicit neural radiance field (NeRF) has gained considerable interest for its efficient training and fast inference capabilities, making it a promising direction such as virtual reality and gaming. In particular, PlenOctree (POT)[1], an explicit hierarchical multi-scale octree representation, has emerged as a structural and influential framework. However, POT's fixed structure for direct optimization is sub-optimal as the scene complexity evolves continuously with updates to cached color and density, necessitating refining the sampling distribution to capture signal complexity accordingly. To address this issue, we propose the dynamic PlenOctree DOT, which adaptively refines the sample distribution to adjust to changing scene complexity. Specifically, DOT proposes a concise yet novel hierarchical feature fusion strategy during the iterative rendering process. Firstly, it identifies the regions of interest through training signals to ensure adaptive and efficient refinement. Next, rather than directly filtering out valueless nodes, DOT introduces the sampling and pruning operations for octrees to aggregate features, enabling rapid parameter learning. Compared with POT, our DOT outperforms it by enhancing visual quality, reducing over $55.15$/$68.84\%$ parameters, and providing 1.7/1.9 times FPS for NeRF-synthetic and Tanks $\&$ Temples, respectively. Priors in Deep Image Restoration and Enhancement: A Survey

Image restoration and enhancement is a process of improving the image quality by removing degradations, such as noise, blur, and resolution degradation. Deep learning (DL) has recently been applied to image restoration and enhancement. Due to its ill-posed property, plenty of works have been explored priors to facilitate training deep neural networks (DNNs). However, the importance of priors has not been systematically studied and analyzed by far in the research community. Therefore, this paper serves as the first study that provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in priors for deep image restoration and enhancement. Our work covers five primary contents: (1) A theoretical analysis of priors for deep image restoration and enhancement; (2) A hierarchical and structural taxonomy of priors commonly used in the DL-based methods; (3) An insightful discussion on each prior regarding its principle, potential, and applications; (4) A summary of crucial problems by highlighting the potential future directions, especially adopting the large-scale foundation models as prior, to spark more research in the community; (5) An open-source repository that provides a taxonomy of all mentioned works and code links.

A Good Student is Cooperative and Reliable: CNN-Transformer Collaborative Learning for Semantic Segmentation

In this paper, we strive to answer the question "how to collaboratively learn convolutional neural network (CNN)-based and vision transformer (ViT)-based models by selecting and exchanging the reliable knowledge between them for semantic segmentation?" Accordingly, we propose an online knowledge distillation (KD) framework that can simultaneously learn compact yet effective CNN-based and ViT-based models with two key technical breakthroughs to take full advantage of CNNs and ViT while compensating their limitations. Firstly, we propose heterogeneous feature distillation (HFD) to improve students' consistency in low-layer feature space by mimicking heterogeneous features between CNNs and ViT. Secondly, to facilitate the two students to learn reliable knowledge from each other, we propose bidirectional selective distillation (BSD) that can dynamically transfer selective knowledge. This is achieved by 1) region-wise BSD determining the directions of knowledge transferred between the corresponding regions in the feature space and 2) pixel-wise BSD discerning which of the prediction knowledge to be transferred in the logit space. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed framework outperforms the state-of-the-art online distillation methods by a large margin, and shows its efficacy in learning collaboratively between ViT-based and CNN-based models.

Coherent Compensation based ISAC Signal Processing for Long-range Sensing

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) will greatly enhance the efficiency of physical resource utilization. The design of ISAC signal based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) signal is the mainstream. However, when detecting the long-range target, the delay of echo signal exceeds CP duration, which will result in inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI), limiting the sensing range. Facing the above problem, we propose to increase useful signal power through coherent compensation and improve the signal to interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) of each OFDM block. Compared with the traditional 2D-FFT algorithm, the improvement of SINR of range-doppler map (RDM) is verified by simulation, which will expand the sensing range.

Superconductivity in graphite intercalation compounds with sodium

The discovery of superconductivity in CaC6 with a critical temperature (Tc) of 11.5 K reignites much interest in exploring high-temperature superconductivity in graphite intercalation compounds (GICs). Here we identify a GIC NaC4, discovered by ab initio evolutionary structure search, as a superconductor with a computed Tc of 41.2 K at 5 GPa. This value is eight times higher than that of the synthesized GIC NaC2 and possesses the highest Tc among available GICs. The remarkable superconductivity of GIC NaC4 mainly arises from the coupling of π electrons in graphene with the low-frequency vibrations involving both Na and C atoms. These findings suggest that Na-GICs may hold great promise as high-Tc superconductors.

InferTurbo: A Scalable System for Boosting Full-graph Inference of Graph Neural Network over Huge Graphs

GNN inference is a non-trivial task, especially in industrial scenarios with giant graphs, given three main challenges, i.e., scalability tailored for full-graph inference on huge graphs, inconsistency caused by stochastic acceleration strategies (e.g., sampling), and the serious redundant computation issue. To address the above challenges, we propose a scalable system named InferTurbo to boost the GNN inference tasks in industrial scenarios. Inspired by the philosophy of ``think-like-a-vertex", a GAS-like (Gather-Apply-Scatter) schema is proposed to describe the computation paradigm and data flow of GNN inference. The computation of GNNs is expressed in an iteration manner, in which a vertex would gather messages via in-edges and update its state information by forwarding an associated layer of GNNs with those messages and then send the updated information to other vertexes via out-edges. Following the schema, the proposed InferTurbo can be built with alternative backends (e.g., batch processing system or graph computing system). Moreover, InferTurbo introduces several strategies like shadow-nodes and partial-gather to handle nodes with large degrees for better load balancing. With InferTurbo, GNN inference can be hierarchically conducted over the full graph without sampling and redundant computation. Experimental results demonstrate that our system is robust and efficient for inference tasks over graphs containing some hub nodes with many adjacent edges. Meanwhile, the system gains a remarkable performance compared with the traditional inference pipeline, and it can finish a GNN inference task over a graph with tens of billions of nodes and hundreds of billions of edges within 2 hours.

When SAM Meets Sonar Images

Segment Anything Model (SAM) has revolutionized the way of segmentation. However, SAM's performance may decline when applied to tasks involving domains that differ from natural images. Nonetheless, by employing fine-tuning techniques, SAM exhibits promising capabilities in specific domains, such as medicine and planetary science. Notably, there is a lack of research on the application of SAM to sonar imaging. In this paper, we aim to address this gap by conducting a comprehensive investigation of SAM's performance on sonar images. Specifically, we evaluate SAM using various settings on sonar images. Additionally, we fine-tune SAM using effective methods both with prompts and for semantic segmentation, thereby expanding its applicability to tasks requiring automated segmentation. Experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in the performance of the fine-tuned SAM.

Antiferromagnetic $α$-MnTe: Molten-Salt-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth and Magneto-Transport Properties

Antiferromagnetic (AF) materials are attracting increasing interest of research in magnetic physics and spintronics. Here, we report controllable synthesis of room-temperature AF $α$-MnTe nanocrystals (Néel temperature ~ 307 K) via molten-salt-assisted chemical vapor deposition method. The growth kinetics are investigated regarding the dependence of flake dimension and macroscopic shape on growth time and temperature. The high crystalline quality and atomic structure are confirmed by various crystallographic characterization means. Cryogenic magneto-transport measurements reveal anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR) response and a complicated dependence of MR on temperature, owing to the subtle competition among multiple scattering mechanisms of thermally excited magnetic disorders (magnon drag), magnetic transition and thermally populated lattice phonons. Overall positive MR behavior with twice transitions in magnitude is observed when out-of-plane external magnetic field ($B$) is applied, while a transition from negative to positive MR response is recorded when in-plane $B$ is applied. The rich magnetic transport properties render $α$-MnTe a promising material for exploiting functional components in magnetic devices.

Dynamics of coupled implicit and explicit opinions

This paper proposes a dual opinions co-evolution model based on the dual attitudes theory in social psychology, where every individual has dual opinions of an object: implicit and explicit opinions. The implicit opinions are individuals' inner evaluations affected by the experience, while the explicit opinions are external expressions of the evaluations and are influenced by public opinion. We theoretically analyze the dynamics of coupled dual opinions in an adversarial discussion scenario, in which two opposing groups participate in the discussion. We rigorously give a method to grade the degree of individual bias. When individuals have a slight bias, dual opinions reach a consensus, showing the phenomenon of acceptance. When individuals are moderately or even extremely biased, they will exhibit the phenomenon of outward compliance, that is, their publicly explicit opinions conform to public opinion, while implicit opinions will reach a persistent disagreement and even polarization. Our investigation indicates that dual opinions may not be monotone initially but eventually converge monotonically. Besides, we analyze the influence of parameters on the co-evolutionary process and results. Numerical simulations of the dual opinions formation process produce inward and outward conformity phenomena, namely acceptance and compliance.

Adaptive Multi-Armed Bandit Learning for Task Offloading in Edge Computing

The widespread adoption of edge computing has emerged as a prominent trend for alleviating task processing delays and reducing energy consumption. However, the dynamic nature of network conditions and the varying computation capacities of edge servers (ESs) can introduce disparities between computation loads and available computing resources in edge computing networks, potentially leading to inadequate service quality. To address this challenge, this paper investigates a practical scenario characterized by dynamic task offloading. Initially, we examine traditional Multi-armed Bandit (MAB) algorithms, namely the $\varepsilon$-greedy algorithm and the UCB1-based algorithm. However, both algorithms exhibit certain weaknesses in effectively addressing the tidal data traffic patterns. Consequently, based on MAB, we propose an adaptive task offloading algorithm (ATOA) that overcomes these limitations. By conducting extensive simulations, we demonstrate the superiority of our ATOA solution in reducing task processing latency compared to conventional MAB methods. This substantiates the effectiveness of our approach in enhancing the performance of edge computing networks and improving overall service quality.

Spectrum Sharing between High Altitude Platform Network and Terrestrial Network: Modeling and Performance Analysis

Achieving seamless global coverage is one of the ultimate goals of space-air-ground integrated network, as a part of which High Altitude Platform (HAP) network can provide wide-area coverage. However, deploying a large number of HAPs will lead to severe congestion of existing frequency bands. Spectrum sharing improves spectrum utilization. The coverage performance improvement and interference caused by spectrum sharing need to be investigated. To this end, this paper analyzes the performance of spectrum sharing between HAP network and terrestrial network. We firstly generalize the Poisson Point Process (PPP) to curves, surfaces and manifolds to model the distribution of terrestrial Base Stations (BSs) and HAPs. Then, the closed-form expressions for coverage probability of HAP network and terrestrial network are derived based on differential geometry and stochastic geometry. We verify the accuracy of closed-form expressions by Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that HAP network has less interference to terrestrial network. Low height and suitable deployment density can improve the coverage probability and transmission capacity of HAP network.

Patch-Mix Transformer for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation: A Game Perspective

Endeavors have been recently made to leverage the vision transformer (ViT) for the challenging unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) task. They typically adopt the cross-attention in ViT for direct domain alignment. However, as the performance of cross-attention highly relies on the quality of pseudo labels for targeted samples, it becomes less effective when the domain gap becomes large. We solve this problem from a game theory's perspective with the proposed model dubbed as PMTrans, which bridges source and target domains with an intermediate domain. Specifically, we propose a novel ViT-based module called PatchMix that effectively builds up the intermediate domain, i.e., probability distribution, by learning to sample patches from both domains based on the game-theoretical models. This way, it learns to mix the patches from the source and target domains to maximize the cross entropy (CE), while exploiting two semi-supervised mixup losses in the feature and label spaces to minimize it. As such, we interpret the process of UDA as a min-max CE game with three players, including the feature extractor, classifier, and PatchMix, to find the Nash Equilibria. Moreover, we leverage attention maps from ViT to re-weight the label of each patch by its importance, making it possible to obtain more domain-discriminative feature representations. We conduct extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets, and the results show that PMTrans significantly surpasses the ViT-based and CNN-based SoTA methods by +3.6% on Office-Home, +1.4% on Office-31, and +17.7% on DomainNet, respectively.
