Temporal Interpolation via Motion Field Prediction

Navigated 2D multi-slice dynamic Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging enables high contrast 4D MR imaging during free breathing and provides in-vivo observations for treatment planning and guidance. Navigator slices are vital for retrospective stacking of 2D data slices in this method. However, they also prolong the acquisition sessions. Temporal interpolation of navigator slices an be used to reduce the number of navigator acquisitions without degrading specificity in stacking. In this work, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based method for temporal interpolation via motion field prediction. The proposed formulation incorporates the prior knowledge that a motion field underlies changes in the image intensities over time. Previous approaches that interpolate directly in the intensity space are prone to produce blurry images or even remove structures in the images. Our method avoids such problems and faithfully preserves the information in the image. Further, an important advantage of our formulation is that it provides an unsupervised estimation of bi-directional motion fields. We show that these motion fields can be used to halve the number of registrations required during 4D reconstruction, thus substantially reducing the reconstruction time.

Robotic Sewing and Knot Tying for Personalized Stent Graft Manufacturing

This paper presents a versatile robotic system for sewing 3D structured object. Leveraging on using a customized robotic sewing device and closed-loop visual servoing control, an all-in-one solution for sewing personalized stent graft is demonstrated. Stitch size planning and automatic knot tying are proposed as the two key functions of the system. By using effective stitch size planning, sub-millimetre sewing accuracy is achieved for stitch sizes ranging from 2mm to 5mm. In addition, a thread manipulator for thread management and tension control is also proposed to perform successive knot tying to secure each stitch. Detailed laboratory experiments have been performed to access the proposed instruments and allied algorithms. The proposed framework can be generalised to a wide range of applications including 3D industrial sewing, as well as transferred to other clinical areas such as surgical suturing.

Spectral density of mixtures of random density matrices for qubits

We derive the spectral density of the equiprobable mixture of two random density matrices of a two-level quantum system. We also work out the spectral density of mixture under the so-called quantum addition rule. We use the spectral densities to calculate the average entropy of mixtures of random density matrices, and show that the average entropy of the arithmetic-mean-state of $n$ qubit density matrices randomly chosen from the Hilbert-Schmidt ensemble is never decreasing with the number $n$. We also get the exact value of the average squared fidelity. Some conjectures and open problems related to von Neumann entropy are also proposed.

Asymptotics for Null-timelike Boundary Problems for General Linear Wave Equations

We study the linear wave equation $\Box_{g}u=0$ in Bondi-Sachs coordinates, for an asymptotically flat Lorentz metric $g$. We consider the null-timelike boundary problem, where an initial value is given on the null surface $τ=0$ and a boundary value on the timelike surface $r=r_{0}$. We obtain spacetime $H^{p}$-estimates of $ru$ for $r>r_0$ and derive an asymptotic exapnsion of $ru$ in terms of ${1}/{r}$ as $r\to\infty$.

Squeezed cooling of mechanical motion beyond the resolved-sideband limit

Cavity optomechanics provides a unique platform for controlling micromechanical systems by means of optical fields that crosses the classical-quantum boundary to achieve solid foundations for quantum technologies. Currently, optomechanical resonators have become promising candidates for the development of precisely controlled nano-motors, ultrasensitive sensors and robust quantum information processors. For all these applications, a crucial requirement is to cool the mechanical resonators down to their quantum ground states. In this paper, we present a novel cooling scheme to further cool a micromechanical resonator via the noise squeezing effect. One quadrature in such a resonator can be squeezed to induce enhanced fluctuation in the other, "heated" quadrature, which can then be used to cool the mechanical motion via conventional optomechanical coupling. Our theoretical analysis and numerical calculations demonstrate that this squeeze-and-cool mechanism offers a quick technique for deeply cooling a macroscopic mechanical resonator to an unprecedented temperature region below the zero-point fluctuations.

Volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups

The matrix integral has many applications in diverse fields. This review article begins by presenting detailed key background knowledge about matrix integral. Then the volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups are computed, respectively. As a unification, we present Mcdonald's volume formula for a compact Lie group. With this volume formula, one can easily derives the volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups. Applications are also presented as well. Specifically, The volume of the set of mixed quantum states is computed by using the volume of unitary group. The volume of a metric ball in unitary group is also computed as well. There are no new results in this article, but only detailed and elementary proofs of existing results. The purpose of the article is pedagogical, and to collect in one place many, if not all, of the quantum information applications of the volumes of orthogonal and unitary groups.

Randomized Iterative Methods with Alternating Projections

We use a unified framework to summarize sixteen randomized iterative methods including Kaczmarz method, coordinate descent method, etc. Some new iterative schemes are given as well. Some relationships with \textsc{mg} and \textsc{ddm} are also discussed. We analyze the convergence properties of the iterative schemes by using the matrix integrals associated with alternating projectors, and demonstrate the convergence behaviors of the randomized iterative methods by numerical examples.

Orthogonally Polarized Kerr Frequency Combs

Kerr optical frequency combs with multi-gigahertz spacing have previously been demonstrated in chip-scale microresonators, with potential applications in coherent communication, spectroscopy, arbitrary waveform generation, and radio frequency photonic oscillators. In general, the harmonics of a frequency comb are identically polarized in a single microresonator. In this work, we report that one comb in one polarization is generated by an orthogonally polarized soliton comb and two low-noise, orthogonally polarized combs interact with each other and exist simultaneously in a single microresonator. The second comb generation is attributed to the strong cross-phase modulation with the orthogonally polarized soliton comb and the high peak power of the intracavity soliton pulse. Experimental results show that a second frequency comb is excited even when a continuous wave light as a "seed"-with power as low as 0.1 mW-is input, while its own power level is below the threshold of comb generation. Moreover, the second comb has a concave envelope, which is different from the sech2 envelope of the soliton comb. This is due to the frequency mismatch between the harmonics and the resonant frequency. We also find that the repetition rates of these two combs coincide, although two orthogonal resonant modes are characterized by different free spectral ranges.

On the global existence and stability of 3-D viscous cylindrical circulatory flows

In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and stability of a 3-D perturbed viscous circulatory flow around an infinite long cylinder. This flow is described by 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes equations. By introducing some suitably weighted energy spaces and establishing a priori estimates, we show that the 3-D cylindrical symmetric circulatory flow is globally stable in time when the corresponding initial states are perturbed suitably small.

Self-Supervised Siamese Learning on Stereo Image Pairs for Depth Estimation in Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery has become a powerful tool for performing minimally invasive procedures, providing advantages in dexterity, precision, and 3D vision, over traditional surgery. One popular robotic system is the da Vinci surgical platform, which allows preoperative information to be incorporated into live procedures using Augmented Reality (AR). Scene depth estimation is a prerequisite for AR, as accurate registration requires 3D correspondences between preoperative and intraoperative organ models. In the past decade, there has been much progress on depth estimation for surgical scenes, such as using monocular or binocular laparoscopes [1,2]. More recently, advances in deep learning have enabled depth estimation via Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) [3], but training requires a large image dataset with ground truth depths. Inspired by [4], we propose a deep learning framework for surgical scene depth estimation using self-supervision for scalable data acquisition. Our framework consists of an autoencoder for depth prediction, and a differentiable spatial transformer for training the autoencoder on stereo image pairs without ground truth depths. Validation was conducted on stereo videos collected in robotic partial nephrectomy.

Motion-Compensated Autonomous Scanning for Tumour Localisation using Intraoperative Ultrasound

Intraoperative ultrasound facilitates localisation of tumour boundaries during minimally invasive procedures. Autonomous ultrasound scanning systems have been recently proposed to improve scanning accuracy and reduce surgeons' cognitive load. However, current methods mainly consider static scanning environments typically with the probe pressing against the tissue surface. In this work, a motion-compensated autonomous ultrasound scanning system using the da Vinci Research Kit (dVRK) is proposed. An optimal scanning trajectory is generated considering both the tissue surface shape and the ultrasound transducer dimensions. A robust vision-based approach is proposed to learn the underlying tissue motion characteristics. The learned motion model is then incorporated into the visual servoing framework. The proposed system has been validated with both phantom and ex vivo experiments using the ground truth motion data for comparison.

Photon-phonon parametric oscillation induced by the quadratic coupling in an optomechanical resonator

A direct photon-phonon parametric effect of the quadratic coupling on the mean-field dynamics of an optomechanical resonator in the large-scale-movement regime is found and investigated. Under a weak pumping power, the mechanical resonator damps to steady state with a nonlinear static response sensitively modified by the quadratic coupling. When the driving powerincreases beyond the static energy balance, the steady states lose their stabilities via Hopf bifurcations and the resonator produces stable self-sustained oscillation(limit-circle behavior) of discrete energies with step-like amplitudes due to the parametric effect of the quadratic coupling, which can be understood roughly by the power balance between gain and loss on the resonator. A further increase of the pumping power can induce chaotic dynamic of the resonator via a typical routine of period-doubling bifurcation but which can be stabilized by the parametric effect through an inversion bifurcation process back to limit-circle states. The bifurcation-to-inverse-bifurcation transitions are numerically verified by the maximal Lyapunov exponents of the dynamics and which indicate an efficient way to suppress the chaotic behavior of the optomechanical resonator by the quadratic coupling. Furthermore, the parametric effect of the quadratic coupling on the dynamic transitions of an optomechanical resonator can be conveniently detected or traced by the output power spectrum of the cavity field.

The classical and quantum synchronization between two scattering modes in Bose-Einstein condensates generated by the standing-wave laser beams

Both classical and quantum dynamics of the synchronization between two nonlinear mechanical modes scattered from Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) by the standing-wave laser beam are comparatively investigated. As the ultra-low dissipations of the momentum modes in the atomic BECs, the synchronized dynamics are studied in a framework of closed-system theory in order to track down both the classical and the quantum synchronizations from an angle of quantum control. The classical synchronization and the relevant dynamics of measure synchronization, the quantum synchronization and two different types of measures proposed by Mari and estimated by mutual information based on $Q$-function are studied respectively in order to reveal both the macroscopic and the microscopic signatures of synchronized behaviors in a closed quantum system. The results demonstrate that the "revival and collapse" of the quantum fluctuations beyond the classical mean-value dynamics due to long-lasting mode coherence discriminates the quantum synchronization from the classical one, which not only excludes the possibilities of an exact synchronization and a perfect density overlap in phase space, but also leads to upper limitations to Mari measure and large unceasing fluctuations to mutual information between two scattering modes. We reveal a close dynamic connection between Mari measure and the mutual information of two nonlinear momentum modes in closed BEC systems by demonstrating an opposite mean-value behavior but a similar fluctuation variation with respect to their respective evolutionary scales.

Cohering power of quantum operations

Quantum coherence is a basic feature of quantum physics. Combined with tensor product structure of state space, it gives rise to the novel concepts such as entanglement and quantum correlations, which play a crucial role in quantum information processing tasks. However, quantum correlations, especially entanglement, are fragile under decoherence. In this context, very few investigations have touched on the production of quantum coherence by quantum operations. In this paper, we study cohering power -- the ability of quantum operations to produce coherence. First, we provide an operational interpretation of cohering power. Then, we decompose a generic quantum operation into three basic operations, namely, unitary, appending and dismissal operations, and show that the cohering power of any quantum operation is upper bounded by the corresponding unitary operation. Furthermore, we compare cohering power and generalized cohering power of quantum operations for different measures of coherence.

A generic theory for Majorana zero modes in 2D superconductors

It is well known that non-Abelian Majorana zero modes (MZM) harbor at vortex cores in a $p_{x}+\text{i}p_{y}$ topological superconductor, which can be realized in a 2D spin-orbit coupled system with a single Fermi surface and by proximity coupling to an $s$-wave superconductor. Here we show that existence of non-Abelian MZMs is unrelated to the bulk topology of a 2D superconductor, and propose that such exotic modes can be resulted in much broader range of superconductors, being topological or trivial. For a generic 2D system with multiple Fermi surfaces and gapped out by superconducting pairings, we show that at least a single MZM survives if there are only odd number of Fermi surfaces of which the corresponding superconducting orders have vortices, and such MZM is protected by an emergent Chern-Simons invariant, irrespective of the bulk topology of the superconductor. This result may enrich new experimental schemes for realizing non-Aelian MZMs. In particular, we propose a minimal scheme to realize the MZMs in a 2D superconducting Dirac semimetal with trivial bulk topology, which can be well achieved based on the recent cold atom experiments.

Average entropy of a subsystem over a global unitary orbit of a mixed bipartite state

We investigate the average entropy of a subsystem within a global unitary orbit of a given mixed bipartite state in the finite-dimensional space. Without working out the closed-form expression of such average entropy for the mixed state case, we provide an analytical lower bound for this average entropy. In deriving this analytical lower bound, we get some useful by-products of independent interest. We also apply these results to estimate average correlation along a global unitary orbit of a given mixed bipartite state. When the notion of von Neumann entropy is replaced by linear entropy, the similar problem can be considered also, and moreover the exact average linear entropy formula is derived for a subsystem over a global unitary orbit of a mixed bipartite state.

Average coherence and its typicality for random mixed quantum states

Wishart ensemble is a useful and important random matrix model used in diverse fields. By realizing induced random mixed quantum states as Wishart ensemble with the fixed-trace one, using matrix integral technique we give a fast track to the average coherence for random mixed quantum states induced via partial-tracing of the Haar-distributed bipartite pure states. As a direct consequence of this result, we get a compact formula of the average subentropy of random mixed states. These obtained compact formulae extend our previous work.

Learning-Based Coexistence in Two-Tier Heterogeneous Networks with Cognitive Small Cells

We study the coexistence problem in a two-tier heterogeneous network (HetNet) with cognitive small cells. In particular, we consider an underlay HetNet, where the cognitive small base station (C-SBS) is allowed to use the frequency bands of the macro cell with an access probability (AP) as long as the C-SBS satisfies a preset interference probability (IP) constraint at macro users (MUs). To enhance the AP (or transmission opportunity) of the C-SBS, we propose a learning-based algorithm for the C-SBS and exploit the distance information between the macro base station (MBS) and MUs. Generally, the signal from the MBS to a specific MU contains the distance information between the MBS to the MU. We enable the C-SBS to analyze the MBS signal on a target frequency band, and learn the distance information between the MBS and the corresponding MU. With the learnt distance information, we calculate the upper bound of the probability that the C-SBS may interfere with the MU, and design an AP with a closed-form expression under the IP constraint. Numerical results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing methods up to $60\%$ AP (or transmission opportunity).
