On Conjectures of Classical and Quantum Correlations in Bipartite States

In this paper, two conjectures which were proposed in [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{82}, 052122(2010)] on the correlations in a bipartite state $ρ^{AB}$ are studied. If the mutual information $I\Pa{ρ^{AB}}$ between two quantum systems $A$ and $B$ before any measurement is considered as the total amount of correlations in the state $ρ^{AB}$, then it can be separated into two parts: classical correlations and quantum correlations. The so-called classical correlations $C\Pa{ρ^{AB}}$ in the state $ρ^{AB}$, defined by the maximizing mutual information between two quantum systems $A$ and $B$ after von Neumann measurements on system $B$, we show that it is upper bounded by the von Neumann entropies of both subsystems $A$ and $B$, this answered the conjecture on the classical correlation. If the quantum correlations $Q\Pa{ρ^{AB}}$ in the state $ρ^{AB}$ is defined by $Q\Pa{ρ^{AB}}= I\Pa{ρ^{AB}} - C\Pa{ρ^{AB}}$, we show also that it is upper bounded by the von Neumann entropy of subsystem $B$. It is also obtained that $Q\Pa{ρ^{AB}}$ is upper bounded by the von Neumann entropy of subsystem $A$ for a class of states.

A wildland fire modeling and visualization environment

We present an overview of a modeling environment, consisting of a coupled atmosphere-wildfire model, utilities for visualization, data processing, and diagnostics, open source software repositories, and a community wiki. The fire model, called SFIRE, is based on a fire-spread model, implemented by the level-set method, and it is coupled with the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model. A version with a subset of the features is distributed with WRF 3.3 as WRF-Fire. In each time step, the fire module takes the wind as input and returns the latent and sensible heat fluxes. The software architecture uses WRF parallel infrastructure for massively parallel computing. Recent features of the code include interpolation from an ideal logarithmic wind profile for nonhomogeneous fuels and ignition from a fire perimeter with an atmosphere and fire spin-up. Real runs use online sources for fuel maps, fine-scale topography, and meteorological data, and can run faster than real time. Visualization pathways allow generating images and animations in many packages, including VisTrails, VAPOR, MayaVi, and Paraview, as well as output to Google Earth. The environment is available from openwfm.org. New diagnostic variables were added to the code recently, including a new kind of fireline intensity, which takes into account also the speed of burning, unlike Byram's fireline intensity.

A Survey of Dynamical Matrices Theory

In this note, we survey some elementary theorems and proofs concerning dynamical matrices theory. Some mathematical concepts and results involved in quantum information theory are reviewed. A little new result on the matrix representation of quantum operation are obtained. And best separable approximation for quantum operations is presented.

Von Neumann Entropy-Preserving Quantum Operations

For a given quantum state $ρ$ and two quantum operations $Φ$ and $Ψ$, the information encoded in the quantum state $ρ$ is quantified by its von Neumann entropy $§(ρ)$. By the famous Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism, the quantum operation $Φ$ can be transformed into a bipartite state, the von Neumann entropy $§^{\mathrm{map}}(Φ)$ of the bipartite state describes the decoherence induced by $Φ$. In this Letter, we characterize not only the pairs $(Φ, ρ)$ which satisfy $§(Φ(ρ))=§(ρ)$, but also the pairs $(Φ, Ψ)$ which satisfy $§^{\mathrm{map}}(Φ\circΨ) = §^{\mathrm{map}}(Ψ)$.

Hot-electron Effect in A Cylindrical Nanoshell

A general expression for calculating the thermal power transferring from 3-dimensional electron to any D-dimensional phonon subsystem is derived in this paper. Electron-phonon coupling in a free suspended cylindrical nanoshell is studied, in which acoustic phonons are confined to quasi-one dimension but electrons behave three-dimensionally. The temperature dependence of the thermal power is obtained analytically, and the low-temperature crossover from the $T^{3}$ to $T^{3}/(1-ν^2)+9γT^4/[T^*(1-ν^2)^{3/2}]$ dependence is also observed. The corresponding quantities are estimated for the material parameters from a metallic nanotube.

On-chip two-octave supercontinuum generation by enhancing self-steepening of optical pulses

Dramatic advances in supercontinuum generation have been made recently using photonic crystal fibers, but it is quite challenging to obtain an octave-spanning supercontinuum on a chip, partially because of strong dispersion in high-index-contrast nonlinear integrated waveguides. We show by simulation that extremely flat and low dispersion can be achieved in silicon nitride slot waveguides over a wavelength band of 500 nm. Different from previously reported supercontinua that were generated either by higher-order soliton fission in anomalous dispersion regime or by self phase modulation in normal dispersion regime, a two-octave supercontinuum from 630 to 2650 nm (360 THz in total) can be generated by greatly enhancing self-steepening in nonlinear pulse propagation in almost zero dispersion regime, when an optical shock as short as 3 fs is formed, which enables on-chip ultra-wide-band applications.

Diverse classical walking of a single atom in an amplitude-modulated standing wave lattice

The classical walking behaviors of a single atom in an amplitude-modulated standing wave lattice beyond the internal dynamics are investigated. Based on a simple effective model, we identify a diversity of dynamic regimes of atomic motion by periodically adjusting the lattice depth. Harmonic oscillation or pendulum rotation with classical step-jumping, random scattering walking, chaotic transportation, quasi-periodic trapped motion and roughly ballistic free flying are found in this simple model within different parametric regions by approximate analyses. Our study demonstrates a complex motion of single atom in modulating optical lattice beyond the quantum description.

Cross-Band Interference Considered Harmful in OFDM Based Distributed Spectrum Sharing

In the past few years we have witnessed the paradigm shift from static spectrum allocation to dynamic spectrum access/sharing. Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) is a promising mechanism to implement the agile spectrum access. However, in wireless distributed networks where tight synchronization is infeasible, OFDMA faces the problem of cross-band interference. Subcarriers used by different users are no longer orthogonal, and transmissions operating on non-overlapping subcarriers can interfere with each other. In this paper, we explore the cause of cross-band interference and analytically quantify its strength and impact on packet transmissions. Our analysis captures three key practical artifacts: inter-link frequency offset, temporal sampling mismatch and power heterogeneity. To our best knowledge, this work is the first to systematically analyze the cause and impact of cross-band interference. Using insights from our analysis, we then build and compared three mitigating methods to combat cross-band interference. Analytical and simulation results show that placing frequency guardband at link boundaries is the most effective solution in distributed spectrum sharing, while the other two frequency-domain methods are sensitive to either temporal sampling mismatch or inter-link frequency offset. We find that the proper guardband size depends heavily on power heterogeneity. Consequently, protocol designs for dynamic spectrum access should carefully take into account the cross-band interference when configuring spectrum usage.
