diffpy.morph: Python tools for model independent comparisons between sets of 1D functions

diffpy$.$morph addresses a need to gain scientific insights from 1D scientific spectra in model independent ways. A powerful approach for this is to take differences between pairs of spectra and look for meaningful changes that might indicate underlying chemical, structural, or other modifications. The challenge is that the difference curve may contain uninteresting differences such as experimental inconsistencies and benign physical changes such as the effects of thermal expansion. diffpy$.$morph allows researchers to apply simple transformations, or "morphs", to one of the datasets to remove the unwanted differences revealing, when they are present, non-trivial differences. diffpy$.$morph is an open-source Python package available on the Python Package Index and conda-forge. Here, we describe its functionality and apply it to solve a range of experimental challenges on diffraction and PDF data from x-rays and neutrons, though we note that it may be applied to any 1D function in principle.

Coulombically-stabilized oxygen hole polarons enable fully reversible oxygen redox

Stabilizing high-valent redox couples and exotic electronic states necessitate an understanding of the stabilization mechanism. In oxides, whether they are being considered for energy storage or computing, highly oxidized oxide-anion species rehybridize to form short covalent bonds and are related to significant local structural distortions. In intercalation oxide electrodes for batteries, while such reorganization partially stabilizes oxygen redox, it also gives rise to substantial hysteresis. In this work, we investigate oxygen redox in layered Na2-XMn3O7, a positive electrode material with ordered Mn vacancies. We show that coulombic interactions between oxidized oxide-anions and the interlayer Na vacancies can disfavor rehybridization and stabilize hole polarons on oxygen at 4.2 V vs. Na/Na+. These coulombic interactions provide thermodynamic energy saving as large as O-O covalent bonding and enable ~ 40 mV voltage hysteresis over multiple electrochemical cycles with negligible voltage fade. Our results establish a complete picture of redox energetics by highlighting the role of coulombic interactions across several atomic distances and suggest avenues to stabilize highly oxidized oxygen for applications in energy storage and beyond.

Impact of Intermediate Sites on Bulk Diffusion Barriers: Mg Intercalation in Mg$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$

The ongoing search for high voltage positive electrode materials for Mg batteries has been primarily hampered by poor Mg mobility in bulk oxide frameworks. Motivated by the presence of Mo$_3$ clusters that can facilitate charge redistribution and the presence of Mg in a non-preferred (tetrahedral) coordination environment, we have investigated the Mg (de)intercalation behavior in layered-Mg$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$, a potential positive electrode. While no electrochemical activity is observed, chemical demagnesiation of Mg$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ is successful but leads to amorphization. Subsequent first-principles calculations predict a strong thermodynamic driving force for structure decomposition at low Mg concentrations and high activation barriers for bulk Mg diffusion, in agreement with experimental observations. Further analysis of the Mg diffusion pathway reveals an O--Mg--O dumbbell intermediate site that creates a high Mg$^{2+}$ migration barrier, indicating the influence of transition states on setting the magnitude of migration barriers.
