Long-Bone Fracture Detection using Artificial Neural Networks based on Line Features of X-ray Images

Two line-based fracture detection scheme are developed and discussed, namely Standard line-based fracture detection and Adaptive Differential Parameter Optimized (ADPO) line-based fracture detection. The purpose for the two line-based fracture detection schemes is to detect fractured lines from X-ray images using extracted features based on recognised patterns to differentiate fractured lines from non-fractured lines. The difference between the two schemes is the detection of detailed lines. The ADPO scheme optimizes the parameters of the Probabilistic Hough Transform, such that granule lines within the fractured regions are detected, whereas the Standard scheme is unable to detect them. The lines are detected using the Probabilistic Hough Function, in which the detected lines are a representation of the image edge objects. The lines are given in the form of points, (x,y), which includes the starting and ending point. Based on the given line points, 13 features are extracted from each line, as a summary of line information. These features are used for fracture and non-fracture classification of the detected lines. The classification is carried out by the Artificial Neural Network (ANN). There are two evaluations that are employed to evaluate both the entirety of the system and the ANN. The Standard Scheme is capable of achieving an average accuracy of 74.25%, whilst the ADPO scheme achieved an average accuracy of 74.4%. The ADPO scheme is opted for over the Standard scheme, however it can be further improved with detected contours and its extracted features.

Modelling Noise and Pulse Width Modulation Interference in Indoor Visible Light Communication Channels

Visible light communication (VLC) has the potential to supplement the growing demand for wireless connectivity. In order to realise the full potential of VLC, channel models are required Discrete channel models based on semi-hidden Markov models (Fritchman model) for indoor VLC using low data rate LEDs are presented. Each channel considered includes background noise and differing types of interference from fluorescent lights and pulse-width modulated (PWM) LEDs, which could be part of an indoor smart lighting system. Models were developed based on experimental error sequences from a VLC system using an on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme. The error sequences were input into the Baum-Welch algorithm to determine the model parameters by expectation maximisation. Simulated error sequences generated by the models are compared to and, in most cases, perform better than simpler models with a single bit error rate. The models closely approximate the experimental errors sequences in terms of error distribution. The models performed better in channels where there is less interference. It was also found that periodic errors were introduced as a results of the PWM modulated smart lighting LEDs. These models have use for designing error control codes and simulating indoor VLC environments with different types of interference.

Bit Flipping Moment Balancing Schemes for Insertion, Deletion and Substitution Error Correction

In this paper, two moment balancing schemes, namely a variable index scheme and a fixed index scheme, for either single insertion/deletion error correction or multiple substitution error correction are introduced for coded sequences originally developed for correcting substitution errors only. By judiciously flipping bits of the original substitution error correcting code word, the resulting word is able to correct either a reduced number of substitution errors or a single insertion/deletion error. The number of flips introduced by the two schemes can be kept small compared to the code length. It shows a practical value of applying the schemes to a long substitution error correcting code for a severe channel where substitution errors dominate but insertion/deletion errors can occur with a low probability. The new schemes can be more easily implemented in an existing coding system than any previously published moment balancing templates since no additional parity bits are required which also means the code rate remains same and the existing substitution error correcting decoder requires no changes. Moreover, the work extends the class of Levenshtein codes capable of correcting either single substitution or single insertion/deletion errors to codes capable of correcting either multiple substitution errors or single insertion/deletion error.

A high-speed, wavelength invariant, single-pixel wavefront sensor with a digital micromirror device

The wavefront measurement of a light beam is a complex task, which often requires a series of spatially resolved intensity measurements. For instance, a detector array may be used to measure the local phase gradient in the transverse plane of the unknown laser beam. In most cases the resolution of the reconstructed wavefront is determined by the resolution of the detector, which in the infrared case is severely limited. Here we employ a Digital Micro-mirror Device (DMD) and a single-pixel detector (i.e. with no spatial resolution) to demonstrate the reconstruction of unknown wavefronts with excellent resolution. Our approach exploits modal decomposition of the incoming field by the DMD, enabling wavefront measurements at 4~kHz of both visible and infrared laser beams.

The Resilience of Hermite- and Laguerre-Gaussian Modes in Turbulence

Vast geographical distances in Africa are a leading cause for the so-called "digital divide" due to the high cost of installing fibre. Free-Space Optical (FSO) communications offer a convenient and higher bandwidth alternative to point-to-point radio microwave links, with the possibility of re-purposing existing infrastructure. Unfortunately, the range of high bandwidth FSO remains limited. While there has been extensive research into an optimal mode set for FSO to achieve maximum data throughput by mode division multiplexing, there has been relatively little work investigating optical modes to improve the resilience of FSO links. Here we experimentally show that a carefully chosen subset of Hermite-Gaussian modes is more resilient to atmospheric turbulence than similar Laguerre-Gauss beams, theoretically resulting in a 167% theoretical increase of propagation distance at a mode dependent loss of 50%.

Spatial Mode Diversity for Robust Free-Space Optical Communications

Free-space communication links are severely affected by atmospheric turbulence, which causes degradation in the transmitted signal. One of the most common solutions to overcome this is to exploit diversity. In this approach, information is sent in parallel using two or more transmitters that are spatially separated, with each beam therefore experiencing different atmospheric turbulence, lowering the probability of a receive error. In this work we propose and experimentally demonstrate a generalization of diversity based on spatial modes of light, which we have termed $\textit{modal diversity}$. We remove the need for a physical separation of the transmitters by exploiting the fact that spatial modes of light experience different perturbations, even when travelling along the same path. For this proof-of-principle we selected modes from the Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian basis sets and demonstrate an improvement in Bit Error Rate by up to 54\%. We outline that modal diversity enables physically compact and longer distance free space optical links without increasing the total transmit power.

Information Leakage of Correlated Source Coded Sequences over Channel with an Eavesdropper

A new generalised approach for multiple correlated sources over a wiretap network is investigated. A basic model consisting of two correlated sources where each produce a component of the common information is initially investigated. There are several cases that consider wiretapped syndromes on the transmission links and based on these cases a new quantity, the information leakage at the source/s is determined. An interesting feature of the models described in this paper is the information leakage quantification. Shannon's cipher system with eavesdroppers is incorporated into the two correlated sources model to minimize key lengths. These aspects of quantifying information leakage and reducing key lengths using Shannon's cipher system are also considered for a multiple correlated source network approach. A new scheme that incorporates masking using common information combinations to reduce the key lengths is presented and applied to the generalised model for multiple sources.

Single machine slack due-window assignment and scheduling of linear time-dependent deteriorating jobs and a deteriorating maintenance activity

In this paper, we consider the slack due-window assignment model and study a single machine scheduling problem of linear time-dependent deteriorating jobs and a deteriorating maintenance activity. The cost for each job consists of four components: earliness, tardiness, window location and window size. The objective is to schedule the jobs and to assign the maintenance activity and due-windows such that the total cost among all the jobs is minimized. A polynomial-time algorithm with the running time not exceeding $O(n^2logn)$ to give a solution to this problem is introduced, where $n$ is the number of jobs.

Far-Field Tunable Nano-focusing Based on Metallic Slits Surrounded with Nonlinear-Variant Widths and Linear-Variant Depths of Circular Dielectric Grating

In this work, we design a new tunable nanofocusing lens by the linear-variant depths and nonlinear-variant widths of circular grating for far field practical applications. The constructively interference of cylindrical surface plasmon launched by the subwavelength metallic structure can form a subdiffraction-limited focus, and the focal length of the this structures can be adjusted if the each groove depth and width of circular grating are arranged in traced profile. According to the numerical calculation, the range of focusing points shift is much more than other plasmonic lens, and the relative phase of emitting light scattered by surface plasmon coupling circular grating can be modulated by the nonlinear-variant width and linear-variant depth. The simulation result indicates that the different relative phase of emitting light lead to variant focal length. We firstly show a unique phenomenon for the linear-variant depths and nonlinear-variant widths of circular grating that the positive change and negative change of the depths and widths of grooves can result in different of variation trend between relative phases and focal lengths. These results paved the road for utilizing the plasmonic lens in high-density optical storage, nanolithography, superresolution optical microscopic imaging, optical trapping, and sensing.

Comparative study on aging effect in BiFeO3 thin films substituted at A- and B-site

Typical characteristics of aging effect, double hysteresis loops, were observed in (100)-oriented Bi0.95Ca0.05FeO3 (BCFO) and BiFe0.95Ni0.05O3 (BFNO) films grown on LaNiO3(100)/Si substrates. The double hysteresis loops for BCFO film become less "constrained" with increasing applied voltage compared to that for BFNO, indicating that the aging effect is more severe in the latter. This can be demonstrated by the lower leakage current and smaller dielectric constant for BFNO. These phenomena are explained based on the crystal structure and defect chemistry. The defect states of the Bi, Ca, Fe, Ni and O ions were clarified by the XPS data.
