6d SCFTs, Center-Flavor Symmetries, and Stiefel--Whitney Compactifications

The center-flavor symmetry of a gauge theory specifies the global form of consistent gauge and flavor bundle background field configurations. For 6d gauge theories which arise from a tensor branch deformation of a superconformal field theory (SCFT), we determine the global structure of such background field configurations, including possible continuous Abelian symmetry and R-symmetry bundles. Proceeding to the conformal fixed point, this provides a prescription for reading off the global form of the continuous factors of the zero-form symmetry, including possible non-trivial mixing between flavor and R-symmetry. As an application, we show that this global structure leads to a large class of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs obtained by compactifying on a $T^2$ in the presence of a topologically non-trivial flat flavor bundle characterized by a 't Hooft magnetic flux. The resulting "Stiefel--Whitney twisted" compactifications realize several new infinite families of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs, and also furnish a 6d origin for a number of recently discovered rank one and two 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs.

Decomposition, condensation defects, and fusion

In this paper we outline the application of decomposition to condensation defects and their fusion rules. Briefly, a condensation defect is obtained by gauging a higher-form symmetry along a submanifold, and so there is a natural interplay with notions of decomposition, the statement that d-dimensional quantum field theories with global (d-1)-form symmetries are equivalent to disjoint unions of other quantum field theories. We will also construct new (sometimes non-invertible) defects, and compute their fusion products, again utilizing decomposition. An important role will be played in all these analyses by theta angles for gauged higher-form symmetries, which can be used to select individual universes in a decomposition.

One Loop to Rule Them All: Eight and Nine Dimensional String Vacua from Junctions

String and 5-brane junctions are shown to succinctly classify all known 8d ${\cal N}$=1 string vacua. This requires an extension of the description for ordinary $[p,q]$-7-branes to consistently include O7$^+$-planes, which then naturally encodes the dynamics of $\mathfrak{sp}_n$ gauge algebras, including their higher-form center symmetries. Central to this analysis are loop junctions, i.e., strings/5-branes which encircle stacks of 7-branes and O7$^+$'s. Loop junctions further signal the appearance of affine symmetries of emergent 9d descriptions at the 8d moduli space's boundaries. Such limits reproduce all 9d string vacua, including the two disconnected rank (1,1) moduli components.

The Fate of Discrete 1-Form Symmetries in 6d

Recently introduced generalized global symmetries have been useful in order to understand non-perturbative aspects of quantum field theories in four and lower dimensions. In this paper we focus on 1-form symmetries of weakly coupled 6d supersymmetric gauge theories coupled to dynamical tensor multiplets. We study the consistency of global 1-form symmetries corresponding to the center of the gauge groups, or subgroups thereof, by activating their background fields, which makes the instanton density fractional. In 6d, an instanton background for a given gauge theory sources BPS strings via tadpole cancellation. The non-trivial 1-form symmetry background configurations contribute to the charge of the BPS strings. However, Dirac quantization imposes restrictions on the consistent 1-form backgrounds, since they can in general lead to and induce fractional charges, thus making (part of) the putative higher-form symmetry inconsistent. This gives explicit criteria to determine whether the discrete 1-form symmetries are realized. We implement these criteria in concrete examples originating from string compactifications. We also corroborate this by finding that a non-trivial fractional contribution is related to states which explicitly break the global 1-form symmetry appearing as massive excitations of the 6d BPS strings. For 6d theories consistently coupled to gravity, this hints at a symmetry breaking tower of states. When the fractional contributions are absent, the F-theory realization of the theories points to the gauging of the 1-form symmetry via the presence of non-trivial Mordell--Weil torsion.

Learn Quasi-stationary Distributions of Finite State Markov Chain

We propose a reinforcement learning (RL) approach to compute the expression of quasi-stationary distribution. Based on the fixed-point formulation of quasi-stationary distribution, we minimize the KL-divergence of two Markovian path distributions induced by the candidate distribution and the true target distribution. To solve this challenging minimization problem by gradient descent, we apply the reinforcement learning technique by introducing the reward and value functions. We derive the corresponding policy gradient theorem and design an actor-critic algorithm to learn the optimal solution and the value function. The numerical examples of finite state Markov chain are tested to demonstrate the new method.

Higher-Form Symmetries and Their Anomalies in M-/F-Theory Duality

We explore higher-form symmetries of M- and F-theory compactified on elliptic fibrations, determined by the topology of their asymptotic boundaries. The underlying geometric structures are shown to be equivalent to known characterizations of the gauge group topology in F-theory via Mordell--Weil torsion and string junctions. We further study dimensional reductions of the 11d Chern--Simons term in the presence of torsional boundary $G_4$-fluxes, which encode background gauge fields of center 1-form symmetries in the lower-dimensional effective gauge theory. We find contributions that can be interpreted as 't Hooft anomalies involving the 1-form symmetry which originate from a fractionalization of the instanton number of non-Abelian gauge theories in F-/M-theory compactifications to 8d/7d and 6d/5d.

On the Gauge Group Topology of 8d CHL Vacua

Compactifications of the CHL string to eight dimensions can be characterized by embeddings of root lattices into the rank 12 momentum lattice $Λ_M$, the so-called Mikhailov lattice. Based on this data, we devise a method to determine the global gauge group structure including all $U(1)$ factors. The key observation is that, while the physical states correspond to vectors in the momentum lattice, the gauge group topology is encoded in its dual. Interpreting a non-trivial $π_1(G) \equiv {\cal Z}$ for the non-Abelian gauge group $G$ as having gauged a ${\cal Z}$ 1-form symmetry, we also prove that all CHL gauge groups are free of a certain anomaly (arXiv:2008.10605) that would obstruct this gauging. We verify this by explicitly computing ${\cal Z}$ for all 8d CHL vacua with rank$(G)=10$. Since our method applies also to $T^2$ compactifications of heterotic strings, we further establish a map that determines any CHL gauge group topology from that of a "parent" heterotic model.

Flavor Symmetries and Automatic Enhancement in the 6d Supergravity Swampland

We argue for the quantum-gravitational inconsistency of certain 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity theories, whose anomaly-free gauge algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and hypermultiplet spectrum $M$ were observed in arxiv:2012.01437 to be realizable only as part of a larger gauge sector $(\mathfrak{g}' \supset \mathfrak{g}, M' \supset M)$ in F-theory. To detach any reference to a string theoretic method of construction, we utilize flavor symmetries to provide compelling reasons why the vast majority of such $(\mathfrak{g},M)$ theories are not compatible with quantum gravity constraints, and how the "automatic enhancement" to $(\mathfrak{g}', M')$ remedies this. In the first class of models, with $\mathfrak{g}' = \mathfrak{g} \oplus \mathfrak{h}$, we show that there exists an unbroken flavor symmetry $\mathfrak{h}$ acting on the matter $M$, which, if ungauged, would violate the No-Global-Symmetries Hypothesis. This argument also applies to 1-form center symmetries, which govern the gauge group topology and massive states in representations different than those of massless states. In a second class, we find that $\mathfrak{g}$ is incompatible with the flavor symmetry of certain BPS strings that must exist by the Completeness Hypothesis.

Real-space representation of winding number for one-dimensional chiral-symmetric topological insulator

The winding number has been widely used as an invariant for diagnosing topological phases in one-dimensional chiral-symmetric systems. We put forward a real-space representation for the winding number. Remarkably, our method reproduces an exactly quantized winding number even in the presence of disorders that break translation symmetry but preserve chiral symmetry. We prove that our real-space representation of the winding number, the winding number defined through the twisted boundary condition, and the real-space winding number derived previously in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 046802 (2014)], are equivalent in the thermodynamic limit at half filling. Our method also works for the case of filling less than one half, where the winding number is not necessarily quantized. Around the disorder-induced topological phase transition, the real-space winding number has large fluctuations for different disordered samples, however, its average over an ensemble of disorder samples may well identify the topological phase transition. Besides, we show that our real-space winding number can be expressed as a Bott index, which has been used to represent the Chern number for two-dimensional systems.

Fibers add Flavor, Part II: 5d SCFTs, Gauge Theories, and Dualities

In arXiv:1906.11820 and arXiv:1907.05404 we proposed an approach based on graphs to characterize 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), which arise as compactifications of 6d $\mathcal{N}= (1,0)$ SCFTs. The graphs, so-called combined fiber diagrams (CFDs), are derived using the realization of 5d SCFTs via M-theory on a non-compact Calabi--Yau threefold with a canonical singularity. In this paper we complement this geometric approach by connecting the CFD of an SCFT to its weakly coupled gauge theory or quiver descriptions and demonstrate that the CFD as recovered from the gauge theory approach is consistent with that as determined by geometry. To each quiver description we also associate a graph, and the embedding of this graph into the CFD that is associated to an SCFT provides a systematic way to enumerate all possible consistent weakly coupled gauge theory descriptions of this SCFT. Furthermore, different embeddings of gauge theory graphs into a fixed CFD can give rise to new UV-dualities for which we provide evidence through an analysis of the prepotential, and which, for some examples, we substantiate by constructing the M-theory geometry in which the dual quiver descriptions are manifest.

String Universality and Non-Simply-Connected Gauge Groups in 8d

We present a consistency condition for 8d ${\cal N} = 1$ supergravity theories with non-trivial global structure $G/Z$ for the non-Abelian gauge group, based on an anomaly involving the $Z$ 1-form center symmetry. The interplay with other Swampland criteria identifies the majority of 8d theories with gauge group $G/Z$, which have no string theory realization, as inconsistent quantum theories when coupled to gravity. While this condition is equivalent to geometric properties of elliptic K3 surfaces in F-theory compactifications, it constrains the unexplored landscape of gauge groups in other 8d string models.

Projection Method for Saddle Points of Energy Functional in $H^{-1}$ Metric

Saddle points play important roles as the transition states of activated process in gradient system driven by energy functional. However, for the same energy functional, the saddle points, as well as other stationary points, are different in different metrics such as the $L^2$ metric and the $H^{-1}$ metric. The saddle point calculation in $H^{-1}$ metric is more challenging with much higher computational cost since it involves higher order derivative in space and the inner product calculation needs to solve another Possion equation to get the $Δ^{-1}$ operator. In this paper, we introduce the projection idea to the existing saddle point search methods, gentlest ascent dynamics (GAD) and iterative minimization formulation (IMF), to overcome this numerical challenge due to $H^{-1}$ metric. Our new method in the $L^2$ metric only by carefully incorporates a simple linear projection step. We show that our projection method maintains the same convergence speed of the original GAD and IMF, but the new algorithm is much faster than the direct method for $H^{-1}$ problem. The numerical results of saddle points in the one dimensional Ginzburg-Landau free energy and the two dimensional Landau-Brazovskii free energy in $H^{-1}$ metric are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of this new method.

Topological states in disordered arrays of dielectric nanoparticles

We study the interplay between disorder and topology for the localized edge states of light in topological zigzag arrays of resonant dielectric nanoparticles. We characterize topological properties by the winding number that depends on both zigzag angle and spacing between nanoparticles in the array. For equal-spacing arrays, the system may have two values of the winding number $ν=0$ or $1$, and it demonstrates localization at the edges even in the presence of disorder, being consistent with experimental observations for finite-length nanodisk structures. For staggered-spacing arrays, the system possesses richer topological phases characterized by the winding numbers $ν=0$, $1$ or $2$, which depend on the averaged zigzag angle and disorder strength. In a sharp contrast to the equal-spacing zigzag arrays, staggered-spacing arrays reveal two types of topological phase transitions induced by the angle disorder, (i) $ν= 0 \leftrightarrow ν= 1$ and (ii) $ν= 1 \leftrightarrow ν= 2$. More importantly, the spectrum of staggered-spacing arrays may remain gapped even in the case of a strong disorder.

Constraints on Standard Model Constructions in F-theory

We argue that the following three statements cannot all be true: (i) our vacuum is a type IIB / F-theory vacuum at moderate-to-large $h^{1,1}$, (ii) the $α'$-expansion is controlled via the supergravity approximation, à la the KKLT and LVS scenarios, and (iii) there are no additional gauged sectors from seven-branes. Since nearly all known globally consistent F-theory models with the exact chiral spectrum of the Standard Model and gauge coupling unification occur at moderate $h^{1,1}$, this finding calls for new moduli stabilization scenarios or/and a rich seven-brane dark sector.

Machine Learning and Algebraic Approaches towards Complete Matter Spectra in 4d F-theory

Motivated by engineering vector-like (Higgs) pairs in the spectrum of 4d F-theory compactifications, we combine machine learning and algebraic geometry techniques to analyze line bundle cohomologies on families of holomorphic curves. To quantify jumps of these cohomologies, we first generate 1.8 million pairs of line bundles and curves embedded in $dP_3$, for which we compute the cohomologies. A white-box machine learning approach trained on this data provides intuition for jumps due to curve splittings, which we use to construct additional vector-like Higgs-pairs in an F-Theory toy model. We also find that, in order to explain quantitatively the full dataset, further tools from algebraic geometry, in particular Brill--Noether theory, are required. Using these ingredients, we introduce a diagrammatic way to express cohomology jumps across the parameter space of each family of matter curves, which reflects a stratification of the F-theory complex structure moduli space in terms of the vector-like spectrum. Furthermore, these insights provide an algorithmically efficient way to estimate the possible cohomology dimensions across the entire parameter space.

Fibers add Flavor, Part I: Classification of 5d SCFTs, Flavor Symmetries and BPS States

We propose a graph-based approach to 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) based on their realization as M-theory compactifications on singular elliptic Calabi--Yau threefolds. Field-theoretically, these 5d SCFTs descend from 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs by circle compactification and mass deformations. We derive a description of these theories in terms of graphs, so-called Combined Fiber Diagrams, which encode salient features of the partially resolved Calabi--Yau geometry, and provides a combinatorial way of characterizing all 5d SCFTs that descend from a given 6d theory. Remarkably, these graphs manifestly capture strongly coupled data of the 5d SCFTs, such as the superconformal flavor symmetry, BPS states, and mass deformations. The capabilities of this approach are demonstrated by deriving all rank one and rank two 5d SCFTs. The full potential, however, becomes apparent when applied to theories with higher rank. Starting with the higher rank conformal matter theories in 6d, we are led to the discovery of previously unknown flavor symmetry enhancements and new 5d SCFTs.

Yukawa Hierarchies in Global F-theory Models

We argue that global F-theory compactifications to four dimensions generally exhibit higher rank Yukawa matrices from multiple geometric contributions known as Yukawa points. The holomorphic couplings furthermore have large hierarchies for generic complex structure moduli. Unlike local considerations, the compact setup realizes these features all through geometry, and requires no instanton corrections. As an example, we consider a concrete toy model with $SU(5) \times U(1)$ gauge symmetry. From the geometry, we find two Yukawa points for the ${\bf 10}_{-2} \, \bar{\bf 5}_6 \, \bar{\bf 5}_{-4}$ coupling, producing a rank two Yukawa matrix. Our methods allow us to track all complex structure dependencies of the holomorphic couplings and study the ratio numerically. This reveals hierarchies of ${\cal O}(10^5)$ and larger on a full-dimensional subspace of the moduli space.

Interaction-induced topological bound states and Thouless pumping in a one-dimensional optical lattice

We study topological features of interacting spin- 1 2 particles in one-dimensional state-dependent optical lattices. Due to the co-translational symmetry, we introduce the center-of-mass Zak phase with the help of center-of-mass momentum. There appear topological bound states composed by two particles in different spin states via tuning hopping and interaction strengths. Under symmetric open boundary conditions, topological edge bound-states appear as a result of the non-trivial center-ofmass Zak phase of bound-state band, which is protected by the center-of-mass inversion symmetry. The interaction plays a crucial role in the appearance of topological bound states and the system becomes completely trivial if the interaction is switched off. By periodically modulating the hopping and interaction strengths, we show how to implement topological Thouless pumping of bound states, in which the quantized shift of center-of-mass can be described by a non-trivial center-of-mass Chern number.
