Kimi k1.5: Scaling Reinforcement Learning with LLMs

Language model pretraining with next token prediction has proved effective for scaling compute but is limited to the amount of available training data. Scaling reinforcement learning (RL) unlocks a new axis for the continued improvement of artificial intelligence, with the promise that large language models (LLMs) can scale their training data by learning to explore with rewards. However, prior published work has not produced competitive results. In light of this, we report on the training practice of Kimi k1.5, our latest multi-modal LLM trained with RL, including its RL training techniques, multi-modal data recipes, and infrastructure optimization. Long context scaling and improved policy optimization methods are key ingredients of our approach, which establishes a simplistic, effective RL framework without relying on more complex techniques such as Monte Carlo tree search, value functions, and process reward models. Notably, our system achieves state-of-the-art reasoning performance across multiple benchmarks and modalities -- e.g., 77.5 on AIME, 96.2 on MATH 500, 94-th percentile on Codeforces, 74.9 on MathVista -- matching OpenAI's o1. Moreover, we present effective long2short methods that use long-CoT techniques to improve short-CoT models, yielding state-of-the-art short-CoT reasoning results -- e.g., 60.8 on AIME, 94.6 on MATH500, 47.3 on LiveCodeBench -- outperforming existing short-CoT models such as GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet 3.5 by a large margin (up to +550%).

Weak-measurement-based pseudospin pointer: A cost-effective scheme for precision measurement

As an essential component of state-of-the-art quantum technologies, fast and efficient quantum measurements are in persistent demand over time. We present a proof-of-principle experiment on a new dimensionless pseudo-spin pointer based on weak measurement. In the context of optical parameter estimation, we demonstrate that the parametric distribution's moment is obtained experimentally by employing the dimensionless pointer without measuring the distribution literally. In addition to the sheer liberation of experimental expense, the photon-countering-based pointer is well-calibrated for the detection of weak signals. We show that for signals $3$-$4$ orders of weaker in strength than the area-array camera method, an order of improvement in precision is achieved experimentally.

A general scheme of differential imaging employing weak measurement

We propose and experimentally realize a general scheme of differential imaging employing the idea of weak measurement. We show that the weak coupling between the system of interest and a two-level ancilla can introduce a two-beam circuit after an arbitrary pre-selection of the ancilla. By choosing the post-selection orthogonal to the pre-selection measurement, an effective imaging platform based on differential operations is shown achieved. Experimental results on both the Sagnac interferometer and ultra-thin Wollaston prism demonstrate that our imaging scheme successfully yields the boundary information of complex geometric configurations.

Synergistic Effects of Nanoparticle Heating and Amoxicillin on H. Pylori Inhibition

We report the design and development of a dual-functional magnetic nanoparticle platform for potential treatment of H. pylori infection. We show that an ultralow concentration of Mn0.3Fe2.7O4@SiO2 nanoparticles subjected to a moderate AC magnetic field, without bulk heating effect, can deposit heat locally and effectively inhibit H. pylori growth and virulence in vitro. When coupled with antibiotic amoxicillin, the dual-functional amoxicillin loaded Mn0.3Fe2.7O4@SiO2 further decreases the bacteria survival rate by a factor of 7 and 5, respectively, compared to amoxicillin treatment and nanoparticle heating alone. The synergistic effect can be partially attributed to the heating induced damage to the cell membrane and protective biofilm, which may increase the permeability of antibiotics to bacteria. Our method provides a viable approach to treat H. pylori infection, with the potential of reducing side effects and enhancing the efficacy for combating drug resistant strains.

Adaptive compressed 3D imaging based on wavelet trees and Hadamard multiplexing with a single photon counting detector

Photon counting 3D imaging allows to obtain 3D images with single-photon sensitivity and sub-ns temporal resolution. However, it is challenging to scale to high spatial resolution. In this work, we demonstrate a photon counting 3D imaging technique with short-pulsed structured illumination and a single-pixel photon counting detector. The proposed multi-resolution photon counting 3D imaging technique acquires a high-resolution 3D image from a coarse image and edges at successfully finer resolution sampled by Hadamard multiplexing along the wavelet trees. The detected power is significantly increased thanks to the Hadamard multiplexing. Both the required measurements and the reconstruction time can be significantly reduced by performing wavelet-tree-based regions of edges predication and Hadamard demultiplexing, which makes the proposed technique suitable for scenes with high spatial resolution. The experimental results indicate that a 3D image at resolution up to 512*512 pixels can be acquired and retrieved with practical time as low as 17 seconds.
