Real-Time Regression Analysis of Streaming Clustered Data With Possible Abnormal Data Batches

This paper develops an incremental learning algorithm based on quadratic inference function (QIF) to analyze streaming datasets with correlated outcomes such as longitudinal data and clustered data. We propose a renewable QIF (RenewQIF) method within a paradigm of renewable estimation and incremental inference, in which parameter estimates are recursively renewed with current data and summary statistics of historical data, but with no use of any historical subject-level raw data. We compare our renewable estimation method with both offline QIF and offline generalized estimating equations (GEE) approach that process the entire cumulative subject-level data, and show theoretically and numerically that our renewable procedure enjoys statistical and computational efficiency. We also propose an approach to diagnose the homogeneity assumption of regression coefficients via a sequential goodness-of-fit test as a screening procedure on occurrences of abnormal data batches. We implement the proposed methodology by expanding existing Spark's Lambda architecture for the operation of statistical inference and data quality diagnosis. We illustrate the proposed methodology by extensive simulation studies and an analysis of streaming car crash datasets from the National Automotive Sampling System-Crashworthiness Data System (NASS CDS).

Objective Class-based Micro-Expression Recognition through Simultaneous Action Unit Detection and Feature Aggregation

Micro-Expression Recognition (MER) is a challenging task as the subtle changes occur over different action regions of a face. Changes in facial action regions are formed as Action Units (AUs), and AUs in micro-expressions can be seen as the actors in cooperative group activities. In this paper, we propose a novel deep neural network model for objective class-based MER, which simultaneously detects AUs and aggregates AU-level features into micro-expression-level representation through Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN). Specifically, we propose two new strategies in our AU detection module for more effective AU feature learning: the attention mechanism and the balanced detection loss function. With those two strategies, features are learned for all the AUs in a unified model, eliminating the error-prune landmark detection process and tedious separate training for each AU. Moreover, our model incorporates a tailored objective class-based AU knowledge-graph, which facilitates the GCN to aggregate the AU-level features into a micro-expression-level feature representation. Extensive experiments on two tasks in MEGC 2018 show that our approach significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-arts in MER. Additionally, we also report our single model-based micro-expression AU detection results.

Feature refinement: An expression-specific feature learning and fusion method for micro-expression recognition

Micro-Expression Recognition has become challenging, as it is extremely difficult to extract the subtle facial changes of micro-expressions. Recently, several approaches proposed several expression-shared features algorithms for micro-expression recognition. However, they do not reveal the specific discriminative characteristics, which lead to sub-optimal performance. This paper proposes a novel Feature Refinement ({FR}) with expression-specific feature learning and fusion for micro-expression recognition. It aims to obtain salient and discriminative features for specific expressions and also predict expression by fusing the expression-specific features. FR consists of an expression proposal module with attention mechanism and a classification branch. First, an inception module is designed based on optical flow to obtain expression-shared features. Second, in order to extract salient and discriminative features for specific expression, expression-shared features are fed into an expression proposal module with attention factors and proposal loss. Last, in the classification branch, labels of categories are predicted by a fusion of the expression-specific features. Experiments on three publicly available databases validate the effectiveness of FR under different protocol. Results on public benchmarks demonstrate that our FR provides salient and discriminative information for micro-expression recognition. The results also show our FR achieves better or competitive performance with the existing state-of-the-art methods on micro-expression recognition.

Measurement of the mechanical reservoir spectral density in optomechanical system

To investigate the dynamical behavior of a quantum system embedded in a memory environment, it is crucial to obtain the knowledge of the reservoir spectral density. However, such knowledge is usually based on a priori assumptions about the environment. In this paper, we put forward a method to obtain key information about the reservoir spectral density of an optomechanical resonator without additional assumptions about the spectral shape. This is achieved by detecting and analysing the optical transmission rate of the emitted light. In the weak optomechanical singlephoton coupling regime, we establish a simple relation between the output light spectrum and the reservoir spectral density. This provide a straightforward and effective way for reconstructing the spectral density profile in single or even multiple decoherence channels.

Simultaneous blockade of a photon phonon, and magnon induced by a two-level atom

The hybrid microwave optomechanical-magnetic system has recently emerged as a promising candidate for coherent information processing because of the ultrastrong microwave photon-magnon coupling and the longlife of the magnon and phonon. As a quantum information processing device, the realization of a single excitation holds special meaning for the hybrid system. In this paper, we introduce a single two-level atom into the optomechanical-magnetic system and show that an unconventional blockade due to destructive interference cannot offer a blockade of both the photon and magnon. Meanwhile, under the condition of single excitation resonance, the blockade of the photon, phonon, and magnon can be achieved simultaneously even in a weak optomechanical region, but the phonon blockade still requires the cryogenic temperature condition.

Distributed Simultaneous Inference in Generalized Linear Models via Confidence Distribution

We propose a distributed method for simultaneous inference for datasets with sample size much larger than the number of covariates, i.e., N >> p, in the generalized linear models framework. When such datasets are too big to be analyzed entirely by a single centralized computer, or when datasets are already stored in distributed database systems, the strategy of divide-and-combine has been the method of choice for scalability. Due to partition, the sub-dataset sample sizes may be uneven and some possibly close to p, which calls for regularization techniques to improve numerical stability. However, there is a lack of clear theoretical justification and practical guidelines to combine results obtained from separate regularized estimators, especially when the final objective is simultaneous inference for a group of regression parameters. In this paper, we develop a strategy to combine bias-corrected lasso-type estimates by using confidence distributions. We show that the resulting combined estimator achieves the same estimation efficiency as that of the maximum likelihood estimator using the centralized data. As demonstrated by simulated and real data examples, our divide-and-combine method yields nearly identical inference as the centralized benchmark.

Remote weak signal measurement via bound states in optomechanical system

A scheme for remote weak signal sensor is proposed in which a coupled resonator optical waveguide~(CROW), as a transmitter, couples to a hybrid optomechanical cavity and an observing cavity, respectively. The non-Markovian theory is employed to study the weak force sensor by treating the CROW as a non-Markovian reservoir of the cavity fields, and the negative-effective-mass~(NEM) oscillator is introduced to cancel the back-action noise. Under certain conditions, dissipationless bound states can be formed such that weak signal can be transferred in the CROW without dissipation. Our results show that ultrahigh sensitivity can be achieved with the assistance of the bound states under certain parameters regime.

Reducing Parameter Space for Neural Network Training

For neural networks (NNs) with rectified linear unit (ReLU) or binary activation functions, we show that their training can be accomplished in a reduced parameter space. Specifically, the weights in each neuron can be trained on the unit sphere, as opposed to the entire space, and the threshold can be trained in a bounded interval, as opposed to the real line. We show that the NNs in the reduced parameter space are mathematically equivalent to the standard NNs with parameters in the whole space. The reduced parameter space shall facilitate the optimization procedure for the network training, as the search space becomes (much) smaller. We demonstrate the improved training performance using numerical examples.

Method of Contraction-Expansion (MOCE) for Simultaneous Inference in Linear Models

Simultaneous inference after model selection is of critical importance to address scientific hypotheses involving a set of parameters. In this paper, we consider high-dimensional linear regression model in which a regularization procedure such as LASSO is applied to yield a sparse model. To establish a simultaneous post-model selection inference, we propose a method of contraction and expansion (MOCE) along the line of debiasing estimation that enables us to balance the bias-and-variance trade-off so that the super-sparsity assumption may be relaxed. We establish key theoretical results for the proposed MOCE procedure from which the expanded model can be selected with theoretical guarantees and simultaneous confidence regions can be constructed by the joint asymptotic normal distribution. In comparison with existing methods, our proposed method exhibits stable and reliable coverage at a nominal significance level with substantially less computational burden, and thus it is trustworthy for its application in solving real-world problems.

Optomechanical quadrature squeezing in the non-Markovian regime

Squeezing of quantum fluctuation plays an important role in fundamental quantum physics and has marked influence on ultrasensitive detection. We propose a scheme to generate and enhance the squeezing of mechanical mode by exposing the optomechanical system to a non-Markovian environment. It is shown that the effective parametric resonance term of mechanical mode can be induced due to the interaction with cavity and non-Markovian reservoir, thus resulting in quadrature squeezing of the mechanical resonator. And jointing the two kinds of interactions can enhance the squeezing effect. Comparing with the usual Markovian regime, we can obtain stronger squeezing, and significantly the squeezing can approach a low asymptotic stable value.

Understanding over-parameterized deep networks by geometrization

A complete understanding of the widely used over-parameterized deep networks is a key step for AI. In this work we try to give a geometric picture of over-parameterized deep networks using our geometrization scheme. We show that the Riemannian geometry of network complexity plays a key role in understanding the basic properties of over-parameterizaed deep networks, including the generalization, convergence and parameter sensitivity. We also point out deep networks share lots of similarities with quantum computation systems. This can be regarded as a strong support of our proposal that geometrization is not only the bible for physics, it is also the key idea to understand deep learning systems.

Geometrization of deep networks for the interpretability of deep learning systems

How to understand deep learning systems remains an open problem. In this paper we propose that the answer may lie in the geometrization of deep networks. Geometrization is a bridge to connect physics, geometry, deep network and quantum computation and this may result in a new scheme to reveal the rule of the physical world. By comparing the geometry of image matching and deep networks, we show that geometrization of deep networks can be used to understand existing deep learning systems and it may also help to solve the interpretability problem of deep learning systems.

Improve Microwave Quantum Illumination Via Optical Parametric Amplifier

Quantum illumination is a quantum-optical sensing technique in which an entangled source is exploited to improve the detection of a low-reflectivity object that is immersed in a bright thermal background. Entangled sources between microwave and optical fields can be exploited to improve detection in microwave quantum illumination technique. We proposed a scheme to enhance the entanglement between the output fields of microwave and optical cavity by introducing optical parametric amplifier medium in cavity optomechanical system. We show that improving signal-to-noise ratio and decreasing error probability of detection can be obtained consequently even for objects with low reflectivity in the presence of optical parametric amplifier.

Spacetime as the optimal generative network of quantum states: a roadmap to QM=GR?

The idea that spacetime geometry is built from quantum entanglement has been widely accepted in the last years. But how exactly the geometry is related with quantum states is still unclear. In this note, based on the idea of deep learning, we propose a mechanism for Susskind's QM=GR hypothesis, spacetime geometry as the optimal generative network of quantum states. We speculate that the space geometry stems as a geodesic tensor network which defines the quantum state complexity of a fundamental quantum state under a given metric. Spacetime corresponds to an evolving tensor network that generates an evolutional fundamental quantum system. This mechanism provides (a) a constructive correspondence between quantum states and spacetime geometry; (b)a spacetime structure emerging from a highly constrained geodesic so that the QEC-like structure shown in AdS/CFT can be naturally realized and (c) a mechanism to derive the gravity equation from the concept of quantum state complexity. With this mechanism, spacetime can have a quantum mechanical description. We hope this may lead to another view direction to understand the basic rules of our world.

Quantum state complexity and the thermodynamic arrow of time

Why time is a one-way corridor? What's the origin of the arrow of time? We attribute the thermodynamic arrow of time as the direction of increasing quantum state complexity. Inspired by the work of Nielsen, Susskind and Micadei, we checked this hypothesis on both a simple two qubit and a three qubit quantum system. The result shows that in the two qubit system, the thermodynamic arrow of time always points in the direction of increasing quantum state complexity. For the three qubit system, the heat flow pattern among subsystems is closely correlated with the quantum state complexity of the subsystems. We propose that besides its impact on macroscopic spatial geometry, quantum state complexity might also generate the thermodynamic arrow of time.

Demystifying AlphaGo Zero as AlphaGo GAN

The astonishing success of AlphaGo Zero\cite{Silver_AlphaGo} invokes a worldwide discussion of the future of our human society with a mixed mood of hope, anxiousness, excitement and fear. We try to dymystify AlphaGo Zero by a qualitative analysis to indicate that AlphaGo Zero can be understood as a specially structured GAN system which is expected to possess an inherent good convergence property. Thus we deduct the success of AlphaGo Zero may not be a sign of a new generation of AI.

Ralph's equivalent circuit model, revised Deutsch's maximum entropy rule and discontinuous quantum evolutions in D-CTCs

We examine Ralph's equivalent circuit model of D-CTCs, which was proposed to derive Deutsch's maximum entropy rule of D-CTCs. By constructing counterexamples we show that the equivalent circuit model does not always reproduce the unique fixed state with the maximal von Neumann entropy. We speculate that the equivalent circuit model remains the correct description of D-CTCs and it can reproduce a revised maximum entropy rule of D-CTCs. We also suggest that the revised maximum entropy rule may eliminate the discontinuous quantum evolutions of D-CTCs.

How deep learning works --The geometry of deep learning

Why and how that deep learning works well on different tasks remains a mystery from a theoretical perspective. In this paper we draw a geometric picture of the deep learning system by finding its analogies with two existing geometric structures, the geometry of quantum computations and the geometry of the diffeomorphic template matching. In this framework, we give the geometric structures of different deep learning systems including convolutional neural networks, residual networks, recursive neural networks, recurrent neural networks and the equilibrium prapagation framework. We can also analysis the relationship between the geometrical structures and their performance of different networks in an algorithmic level so that the geometric framework may guide the design of the structures and algorithms of deep learning systems.
