A Multiple Ejecta-Circumstellar Meduim Interaction Model and Its Implications for the Superluminous Supernova iPTF15esb

Recently, a hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN) iPTF15esb at redshift $z=0.224$ was reported, whose light curve (LC) and spectrum show several unusual characteristics. Its late-time spectrum shows a strong, broad H$α$ emission line and the bolometric LC exhibits two peaks and a post-peak plateau. Here we propose an ejecta-circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction model involving multiple shells and winds to explain this double-peak SN. We find that the theoretical LC reproduced by this model can well match the observations of iPTF15esb. Based on this result, we infer that the progenitor has undergone at least three violent mass-loss processes before the SN explosion. Furthermore, we find that the masses of the CSM wind and shells from the outermost shell (the first eruption) to the innermost wind (the final eruption) decrease sequentially but their densities increase. The variation trend of the inferred densities of the shells and wind is consistent with the stellar structure before an SN explosion. Further investigations for similar SLSNe would provide a probe for the mass-loss history of their progenitors.

A Monte Carlo Approach to Magnetar-powered Transients: I. Hydrogen-deficient Superluminous Supernovae

In this paper we collect 19 hydrogen-deficient superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) and fit their light curves, temperature evolution, and velocity evolution based on the magnetar-powered model. To obtain the best-fitting parameters, we incorporate the Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach. We get rather good fits for 7 events ($χ^2$/d.o.f = $0.24-0.96$) and good fits for other 7 events ($χ^2$/d.o.f = $1.37-3.13$). We find that the initial periods ($P_{0}$) and magnetic strength ($B_{p}$) of the magnetars supposed to power these SLSNe are in the range of $\sim 1.2-8.3$ ms and $\sim (0.2-8.8)\times 10^{14}\,$G, respectively; the inferred masses of the ejecta of these SLSNe are between 1 and 27.6 $M_{\odot }$, and the values of the gamma-ray opacity $κ_{γ}$ are between 0.01 and 0.82 cm$^2$ ~g$^{-1}$. We also calculate the fraction of the initial rotational energy of the magnetars harbored in the centers of the remnants of these SLSNe that is converted to the kinetic energy of the ejecta and find that the fraction is $\sim 19-97$ for different values of $P_{0}$ and $B_{p}$, indicating that the acceleration effect cannot be neglected. Moreover, we find that the initial kinetic energies of most of these SLSNe are so small ($\lesssim 2\times 10^{51}$ erg) that they can be easily explained by the neutrino-driven mechanism. These results can help clarify some important issues related to the energy-source mechanisms and explosion mechanisms and reveal the nature of SLSNe.

Solving the 56Ni puzzle of magnetar-powered broad-lined type Ic supernovae

Broad-lined type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic-BL) are of great importance because their association with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) holds the key to deciphering the central engine of LGRBs, which refrains from being unveiled despite decades of investigation. Among the two popularly hypothesized types of central engine, i.e., black holes and strongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars), there is mounting evidence that the central engine of GRB-associated SNe (GRB-SNe) is rapidly rotating magnetars. Theoretical analysis also suggests that magnetars could be the central engine of SNe Ic-BL. What puzzled the researchers is the fact that light curve modeling indicates that as much as 0.2-0.5 solar mass of 56Ni was synthesized during the explosion of the SNe Ic-BL, which is unfortunately in direct conflict with current state-of-the-art understanding of magnetar-powered 56Ni synthesis. Here we propose a dynamic model of magnetar-powered SNe to take into account the acceleration of the ejecta by the magnetar, as well as the thermalization of the injected energy. Assuming that the SN kinetic energy comes exclusively from the magnetar acceleration, we find that although a major fraction of the rotational energy of the magnetar is to accelerate the SNe ejecta, a tiny fraction of this energy deposited as thermal energy of the ejecta is enough to reduce the needed 56Ni to 0.06 solar mass for both SN 1997ef and SN 2007ru. We therefore suggest that magnetars could power SNe Ic-BL both in aspects of energetics and of 56Ni synthesis.

Reverse Shock Emission and Ionization Break Out Powered by Post-merger Millisecond Magnetars

There is accumulating evidence that at least a fraction of binary neutron star mergers result in rapidly spinning magnetars, with subrelativistic neutron-rich ejecta as massive as a small fraction of solar mass. The ejecta could be heated continuously by the Poynting flux emanated from the central magnetars. Such Poynting flux could become lepton-dominated so that a reverse shock develops. It was demonstrated that such a picture is capable of accounting for the optical transient PTF11agg (Wang & Dai 2013b). In this paper we investigate the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) radiation as well as the optical and radio radiation studied by Wang & Dai (2013b). UV emission is particularly important because it has the right energy to ionize the hot ejecta at times $t\lesssim 600$ s. It is thought that the ejecta of binary neutron star mergers are a remarkably pure sample of r-process material, about which our understanding is still incomplete. In this paper we evaluate the possibility of observationally determining the bound-bound and bound-free opacities of the r-process material by timing the X-ray, UV, and optical radiation. It is found that these timings depend on the opacities weakly and therefore only loose constraints on the opacities can be obtained.

Regularity of traveling free surface water waves with vorticity

We prove real analyticity of all the streamlines, including the free surface, of a gravity- or capillary-gravity-driven steady flow of water over a flat bed, with a Hölder continuous vorticity function, provided that the propagating speed of the wave on the free surface exceeds the horizontal fluid velocity throughout the flow. Furthermore, if the vorticity possesses some Gevrey regularity of index $s$, then the stream function admits the same Gevrey regularity throughout the fluid domain; in particular if the Gevrey index $s$ equals to 1, then we obtain analyticity of the stream function. The regularity results hold for both periodic and solitary water waves.

Particle paths in small amplitude solitary waves with negative vorticity

We investigate the particle trajectories in solitary waves with vorticity, where the vorticity is assumed to be negative and decrease with depth. We show that the individual particle moves in a similar way as that in the irrotational case if the underlying laminar flow is favorable, that is, the flow is moving in the same direction as the wave propagation throughout the fluid, and show that if the underlying current is not favorable, some particles in a sufficiently small solitary wave move to the opposite direction of wave propagation along a path with a single loop or hump .

Regularity of traveling periodic stratified water waves with vorticity

We prove real analyticity of all the streamlines, including the free surface, of a steady stratified flow of water over a flat bed in the absence of stagnation points, with a Hölder continuous Bernoulli function and a Hölder continuously differentiable density function. Furthermore, we show that if the Bernoulli function and the density function possess some Gevrey regularity of index s, then the stream function admits the same Gevrey regularity throughout the fluid domain; in particular if the Gevrey index s equals to 1, then we obtain analyticity of the stream function. The regularity results hold for three distinct physical regimes: capillary, capillary-gravity, and gravity water waves.

Recovering modified Newtonian dynamics by changing inertia

Milgrom's modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) has done a great job on accounting for the rotation curves of a variety of galaxies by assuming that Newtonian dynamics breaks down for extremely low acceleration typically found in the galactic contexts. This breakdown of Newtonian dynamics may be a result of modified gravity or a manifest of modified inertia. The MOND phenomena are derived here based on three general assumptions: 1) Gravitational mass is conserved; 2) Inverse-square law is applicable at large distance; 3) Inertial mass depends on external gravitational fields. These assumptions not only recover the deep-MOND behaviour, the accelerating expansion of the universe is also a result of these assumptions. Then Lagrangian formulae are developed and it is found that the assumed universal acceleration constant a0 is actually slowly varying by a factor no more than 4. This varying 'constant' is just enough to account for the mass-discrepancy presented in bright clusters.

A Graphene Quantum Dot with a Single Electron Transistor as Integrated Charge Sensor

We have developed an etching process to fabricate a quantum dot and a nearby single electron transistor as a charge detector in a single layer graphene. The high charge sensitivity of the detector is used to probe Coulomb diamonds as well as excited spectrum in the dot, even in the regime where the current through the quantum dot is too small to be measured by conventional transport means. The graphene based quantum dot and integrated charge sensor serve as an essential building block to form a solid-state qubit in a nuclear-spin-free quantum world.
