Non-relativistic metrics from back-reacting fermions

It has recently been pointed out that under certain circumstances the back-reaction of charged, massive Dirac fermions causes important modifications to AdS_2 spacetimes arising as the near horizon geometry of extremal black holes. In a WKB approximation, the modified geometry becomes a non-relativistic Lifshitz spacetime. In three dimensions, it is known that integrating out charged, massive fermions gives rise to gravitational and Maxwell Chern-Simons terms. We show that Schrodinger (warped AdS_3) spacetimes exist as solutions to a gravitational and Maxwell Chern-Simons theory with a cosmological constant. Motivated by this, we look for warped AdS_3 or Schrodinger metrics as exact solutions to a fully back-reacted theory containing Dirac fermions in three and four dimensions. We work out the dynamical exponent in terms of the fermion mass and generalize this result to arbitrary dimensions.

Boundary entropy of supersymmetric Janus solutions

In this paper we compute the holographic boundary entropy for half-BPS Janus deformations of the $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ vacuum of type IIB supergravity. Previous work \cite{Chiodaroli:2009yw} has shown that there are two independent deformations of this sort. In one case, the six-dimensional dilaton jumps across the interface, while the other case displays a jump of axion and four-form potential. In case of a jump of the six-dimensional dilaton, it is possible to compare the holographic result with the weak-coupling result for a two-dimensional interface CFT where the radii of the compactified bosons jump across the interface. We find exact agreement between holographic and CFT results. This is to be contrasted with the holographic calculation for the non-supersymmetric Janus solution, which agrees with the CFT result only at the leading order in the jump parameter. We also examine the implications of the holographic calculation in case of a solution with a jump in the axion, which can be associated with a deformation of the CFT by the $Z_2$-orbifold twist operator.

Holographic quantum liquids in 1+1 dimensions

In this paper we initiate the study of holographic quantum liquids in 1+1 dimensions. Since the Landau Fermi liquid theory breaks down in 1+1 dimensions, it is of interest to see what holographic methods have to say about similar models. For theories with a gapless branch, the Luttinger conjecture states that there is an effective description of the physics in terms of a Luttinger liquid which is specified by two parameters. The theory we consider is the defect CFT arising due to a probe D3 brane in the AdS Schwarzschild planar black hole background. We turn on a fundamental string density on the worldvolume. Unlike higher dimensional defects, a persistent dissipationless zero sound mode is found. The thermodynamic aspects of these models are considered carefully and certain subtleties with boundary terms are explained which are unique to 1+1 dimensions. Spectral functions of bosonic and fermionic fluctuations are also considered and quasinormal modes are analysed. A prescription is given to compute spectral functions when there is mixing due to the worldvolume gauge field. We comment on the Luttinger conjecture in the light of our findings.

Inflation on an Open Racetrack

We present a variant of warped D-brane inflation by incorporating multiple sets of holomorphically-embedded D7-branes involved in moduli stabilization with extent into a warped throat. The resultant D3-brane motion depends on the D7-brane configuration and the relative position of the D3-brane in these backgrounds. The non-perturbative moduli stabilization superpotential takes the racetrack form, but the additional D3-brane open string moduli dependence provides more flexibilities in model building. For concreteness, we consider D3-brane motion in the warped deformed conifold with the presence of multiple D7-branes, and derive the scalar potential valid for the entire throat. By explicit tuning of the microphysical parameters, we obtain inflationary trajectories near an inflection point for various D7-brane configurations. Moreover, the open racetrack potential admits approximate Minkowski vacua before uplifting. We demonstrate with a concrete D-brane inflation model where the Hubble scale during inflation can exceed the gravitino mass. Finally, the multiple sets of D7-branes present in this open racetrack setup also provides a mechanism to stabilize the D3-brane to metastable vacua in the intermediate region of the warped throat.

Type II Small Stringy Black Holes, Probe Branes and Higher Derivative Interactions

The near horizon geometry of a fundamental string wrapped around an S1 reduced to four dimensions is expected to be AdS2 x S2. A probe string analysis suggests a no-force condition indicating supersymmetry, which coincides with the condition that the AdS2 is embedded in AdS3. We therefore consider the bulk string theory in terms of a WZW model on AdS3 following recent proposals by Dabholkar et. al and Giveon et. al. We find that conformal symmetry of the model naturally leads to the no-force constraints obtained from the probes. Moreover, we are able to extract the values of the moduli that account for the value of the microscopic entropy. We also investigate higher derivative corrections of the form alpha'^3 R^4 + flux terms to the horizon, in the context of type IIB supergravity. Imposing the no-force condition from the probe analysis leads to a striking simplification of the equations of motion at this order in alpha'. However, we argue that the value of the entropy can only be determined by considering all orders in alpha'.

String Creation, D-branes and Effective Field Theory

This paper addresses several unsettled issues associated with string creation in systems of orthogonal Dp-D(8-p) branes. The interaction between the branes can be understood either from the closed string or open string picture. In the closed string picture it has been noted that the DBI action fails to capture an extra RR exchange between the branes. We demonstrate how this problem persists upon lifting to M-theory. These D-brane systems are analysed in the closed string picture by using gauge-fixed boundary states in a non-standard lightcone gauge, in which RR exchange can be analysed precisely. The missing piece in the DBI action also manifests itself in the open string picture as a mismatch between the Coleman-Weinberg potential obtained from the effective field theory and the corresponding open string calculation. We show that this difference can be reconciled by taking into account the superghosts in the (0+1)effective theory of the chiral fermion, that arises from gauge fixing the spontaneously broken world-line local supersymmetries.

Comments on I1-branes

We explore the supergravity solution of D5-branes intersecting as an I1-brane. In a suitable near-horizon limit the geometry is in qualitative agreement with that found in the microscopic open-string analysis as well as the NS5-brane analysis of Itzhaki, Kutasov and Seiberg. In particular, the ISO(1,1) Lorentz symmetry of the intersection domain is enhanced to ISO(1,2). The discussion is generalised to the T-dual configuration of a D4-brane intersecting a D6-brane. In this case the ISO(1,1) symmetry is not enhanced. This is true both in the supergravity approximation to the weakly coupled string theory and to the M-theory limit.

Intersecting D7-Branes, I5-Branes and Conifolds

A candidate supergravity solution of intersecting D7-branes with a five-dimensional intersecting domain (an I5-brane) is presented. This displays an enhanced Poincare symmetry and supersymmetry away from the brane cores. We also explore the possibility of a relation between the intersection region of D7-branes and conifolds through F-theory.
