Learning to Suppress SPAD-based LiDAR Flare

Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD)-based Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is emerging for autonomous vehicles due to its high sensitivity and precise depth sensing capabilities. However, flare caused by excessive photon returns or pile-up effects can lead to incorrect depth estimation and exaggerated boundaries in point clouds, resulting in severe distortions of geometric measurements, making flare suppression essential for safety-critical applications. Existing flare mitigation methods primarily operate at the hardware or signal-processing levels. While effective under specific configurations, they are largely rule-based and configuration-dependent, lacking learnable representations that generalize across diverse sensing scenarios. In this work, we reformulate flare suppression as a semantic segmentation problem, enabling data-driven learning of geometric and photometric cues directly from SPAD measurements. We first benchmark representative segmentation models on the newly introduced SPAD flare dataset and observe that they struggle to exploit the intrinsic multi-echo characteristics of SPAD signals. Motivated by this observation, we propose Physically-Informed segmentation for LiDAR Flare (PILF), a learning-based approach that treats the first and second echoes, together with ambient illumination, as distinct modalities, aggregating cross-echo information while jointly encoding geometric and photometric features. Experiments across multiple real-world scenes demonstrate that PILF significantly outperforms compared segmentation models, achieving up to 79.32% mIoU, and providing an effective solution for SPAD-based LiDAR flare suppression.

Iterative Volume Fusion for Asymmetric Stereo Matching

Stereo matching is vital in 3D computer vision, with most algorithms assuming symmetric visual properties between binocular visions. However, the rise of asymmetric multi-camera systems (e.g., tele-wide cameras) challenges this assumption and complicates stereo matching. Visual asymmetry disrupts stereo matching by affecting the crucial cost volume computation. To address this, we explore the matching cost distribution of two established cost volume construction methods in asymmetric stereo. We find that each cost volume experiences distinct information distortion, indicating that both should be comprehensively utilized to solve the issue. Based on this, we propose the two-phase Iterative Volume Fusion network for Asymmetric Stereo matching (IVF-AStereo). Initially, the aggregated concatenation volume refines the correlation volume. Subsequently, both volumes are fused to enhance fine details. Our method excels in asymmetric scenarios and shows robust performance against significant visual asymmetry. Extensive comparative experiments on benchmark datasets, along with ablation studies, confirm the effectiveness of our approach in asymmetric stereo with resolution and color degradation.

Nonparametric Statistical Inference and Imputation for Incomplete Categorical Data

Missingness in categorical data is a common problem in various real applications. Traditional approaches either utilize only the complete observations or impute the missing data by some ad hoc methods rather than the true conditional distribution of the missing data, thus losing or distorting the rich information in the partial observations. In this paper, we propose the Dirichlet Process Mixture of Collapsed Product-Multinomials (DPMCPM) to model the full data jointly and compute the model efficiently. By fitting an infinite mixture of product-multinomial distributions, DPMCPM is applicable for any categorical data regardless of the true distribution, which may contain complex association among variables. Under the framework of latent class analysis, we show that DPMCPM can model general missing mechanisms by creating an extra category to denote missingness, which implicitly integrates out the missing part with regard to their true conditional distribution. Through simulation studies and a real application, we demonstrate that DPMCPM outperforms existing approaches on statistical inference and imputation for incomplete categorical data of various missing mechanisms. DPMCPM is implemented as the R package \texttt{MMDai}, which is available from the Comprehensive R Archive Network at https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/MMDai/index.html.
