Affine Point Processes: Refinements to Large-Time Asymptotics

Affine point processes are a class of simple point processes with self- and mutually-exciting properties, and they have found useful applications in several areas. In this paper, we obtain large-time asymptotic expansions in large deviations and refined central limit theorem for affine point processes, using the framework of mod-phi convergence. Our results extend the large-time limit theorems in [Zhang et al. 2015. Math. Oper. Res. 40(4), 797-819]. The resulting explicit approximations for large deviation probabilities and tail expectations can be used as an alternative to importance sampling Monte Carlo simulations. Numerical experiments illustrate our results.

Accelerated Linear Convergence of Stochastic Momentum Methods in Wasserstein Distances

Momentum methods such as Polyak's heavy ball (HB) method, Nesterov's accelerated gradient (AG) as well as accelerated projected gradient (APG) method have been commonly used in machine learning practice, but their performance is quite sensitive to noise in the gradients. We study these methods under a first-order stochastic oracle model where noisy estimates of the gradients are available. For strongly convex problems, we show that the distribution of the iterates of AG converges with the accelerated $O(\sqrtκ\log(1/\varepsilon))$ linear rate to a ball of radius $\varepsilon$ centered at a unique invariant distribution in the 1-Wasserstein metric where $κ$ is the condition number as long as the noise variance is smaller than an explicit upper bound we can provide. Our analysis also certifies linear convergence rates as a function of the stepsize, momentum parameter and the noise variance; recovering the accelerated rates in the noiseless case and quantifying the level of noise that can be tolerated to achieve a given performance. In the special case of strongly convex quadratic objectives, we can show accelerated linear rates in the $p$-Wasserstein metric for any $p\geq 1$ with improved sensitivity to noise for both AG and HB through a non-asymptotic analysis under some additional assumptions on the noise structure. Our analysis for HB and AG also leads to improved non-asymptotic convergence bounds in suboptimality for both deterministic and stochastic settings which is of independent interest. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first linear convergence results for stochastic momentum methods under the stochastic oracle model. We also extend our results to the APG method and weakly convex functions showing accelerated rates when the noise magnitude is sufficiently small.

Functional central limit theorems for stationary Hawkes processes and application to infinite-server queues

A univariate Hawkes process is a simple point process that is self-exciting and has clustering effect. The intensity of this point process is given by the sum of a baseline intensity and another term that depends on the entire past history of the point process. Hawkes process has wide applications in finance, neuroscience, social networks, criminology, seismology, and many other fields. In this paper, we prove a functional central limit theorem for stationary Hawkes processes in the asymptotic regime where the baseline intensity is large. The limit is a non-Markovian Gaussian process with dependent increments. We use the resulting approximation to study an infinite-server queue with high-volume Hawkes traffic. We show that the queue length process can be approximated by a Gaussian process, for which we compute explicitly the covariance function and the steady-state distribution. We also extend our results to multivariate stationary Hawkes processes and establish limit theorems for infinite-server queues with multivariate Hawkes traffic.

Some asymptotic results for nonlinear Hawkes processes

Hawkes process is a class of simple point processes with self-exciting and clustering properties. Hawkes process has been widely applied in finance, neuroscience, social networks, criminology, seismology, and many other fields. In this paper, we study fluctuations, large deviations and moderate deviations nonlinear Hawkes processes in a new asymptotic regime, the large intensity function and the small exciting function regime. It corresponds to the large baseline intensity asymptotics for the linear case, and can also be interpreted as the asymptotics for the mean process of Hawkes processes on a large network.

Limit theorems for Markovian Hawkes processes with a large initial intensity

Hawkes process is a simple point process that is self-exciting and has clustering effect. The intensity of this point process depends on its entire past history. It has wide applications in finance, neuroscience, social networks, criminology, seismology, and many other fields. In this paper, we study the linear Hawkes process with an exponential exciting function in the asymptotic regime where the initial intensity of the Hawkes process is large. We derive limit theorems under this asymptotic regime as well as the regime when both the initial intensity and the time are large.

On the phase transition curve in a directed exponential random graph model

We consider a family of directed exponential random graph models parametrized by edges and outward stars. Much of the important statistical content of such models is given by the normalization constant of the models, and in particular, an appropriately scaled limit of the normalization, which is called the free energy. We derive precise asymptotics for the normalization constant for finite graphs. We use this to derive a formula for the free energy. The limit is analytic everywhere except along a curve corresponding to a first order phase transition. We examine unusual behavior of the model along the phase transition curve.

Short Maturity Forward Start Asian Options in Local Volatility Models

We study the short maturity asymptotics for prices of forward start Asian options under the assumption that the underlying asset follows a local volatility model. We obtain asymptotics for the cases of out-of-the-money, in-the-money, and at-the-money, considering both fixed strike and floating Asian options. The exponential decay of the price of an out-of-the-money forward start Asian option is handled using large deviations theory, and is controlled by a rate function which is given by a double-layer optimization problem. In the Black-Scholes model, the calculation of the rate function is simplified further to the solution of a non-linear equation. We obtain closed form for the rate function, as well as its asymptotic behaviors when the strike is extremely large, small, or close to the initial price of the underlying asset.

Transform Analysis for Hawkes Processes with Applications in Dark Pool Trading

Hawkes processes are a class of simple point processes that are self-exciting and have clustering effect, with wide applications in finance, social networks and many other fields. This paper considers a self-exciting Hawkes process where the baseline intensity is time-dependent, the exciting function is a general function and the jump sizes of the intensity process are independent and identically distributed non-negative random variables. This Hawkes model is non-Markovian in general. We obtain closed-form formulas for the Laplace transform, moments and the distribution of the Hawkes process. To illustrate the applications of our results, we use the Hawkes process to model the clustered arrival of trades in a dark pool and analyze various performance metrics including time-to-first-fill, time-to-complete-fill and the expected fill rate of a resting dark order.

On the Hawkes Process with Different Exciting Functions

The Hawkes process is a simple point process, whose intensity function depends on the entire past history and is self-exciting and has the clustering property. The Hawkes process is in general non-Markovian. The linear Hawkes process has immigration-birth representation. Based on that, Fierro et al. recently introduced a generalized linear Hawkes model with different exciting functions. In this paper, we study the convergence to equilibrium, large deviation principle, and moderate deviation principle for this generalized model. This model also has connections to the multivariate linear Hawkes process. Some applications to finance are also discussed.

Asymptotics for the Euler-Discretized Hull-White Stochastic Volatility Model

We consider the stochastic volatility model $dS_t = σ_t S_t dW_t,dσ_t = ωσ_t dZ_t$, with $(W_t,Z_t)$ uncorrelated standard Brownian motions. This is a special case of the Hull-White and the $β=1$ (log-normal) SABR model, which are widely used in financial practice. We study the properties of this model, discretized in time under several applications of the Euler-Maruyama scheme, and point out that the resulting model has certain properties which are different from those of the continuous time model. We study the asymptotics of the time-discretized model in the $n\to \infty$ limit of a very large number of time steps of size $τ$, at fixed $β=\frac12ω^2τn^2$ and $ρ=σ_0^2τ$, and derive three results: i) almost sure limits, ii) fluctuation results, and iii) explicit expressions for growth rates (Lyapunov exponents) of the positive integer moments of $S_t$. Under the Euler-Maruyama discretization for $(S_t,\log σ_t)$, the Lyapunov exponents have a phase transition, which appears in numerical simulations of the model as a numerical explosion of the asset price moments. We derive criteria for the appearance of these explosions.

Asymptotics for the Discrete-Time Average of the Geometric Brownian Motion and Asian Options

The time average of geometric Brownian motion plays a crucial role in the pricing of Asian options in mathematical finance. In this paper we consider the asymptotics of the discrete-time average of a geometric Brownian motion sampled on uniformly spaced times in the limit of a very large number of averaging time steps. We derive almost sure limit, fluctuations, large deviations, and also the asymptotics of the moment generating function of the average. Based on these results, we derive the asymptotics for the price of Asian options with discrete-time averaging in the Black-Scholes model, with both fixed and floating strike.

Asymptotic Normality of Extensible Grid Sampling

Recently, He and Owen (2016) proposed the use of Hilbert's space filling curve (HSFC) in numerical integration as a way of reducing the dimension from $d>1$ to $d=1$. This paper studies the asymptotic normality of the HSFC-based estimate when using scrambled van der Corput sequence as input. We show that the estimate has an asymptotic normal distribution for functions in $C^1([0,1]^d)$, excluding the trivial case of constant functions. The asymptotic normality also holds for discontinuous functions under mild conditions. It was previously known only that scrambled $(0,m,d)$-net quadratures enjoy the asymptotic normality for smooth enough functions, whose mixed partial gradients satisfy a Hölder condition. As a by-product, we find lower bounds for the variance of the HSFC-based estimate. Particularly, for nontrivial functions in $C^1([0,1]^d)$, the low bound is of order $n^{-1-2/d}$, which matches the rate of the upper bound established in He and Owen (2016).

Large deviations and applications for Markovian Hawkes processes with a large initial intensity

Hawkes process is a class of simple point processes that is self-exciting and has clustering effect. The intensity of this point process depends on its entire past history. It has wide applications in finance, insurance, neuroscience, social networks, criminology, seismology, and many other fields. In this paper, we study linear Hawkes process with an exponential kernel in the asymptotic regime where the initial intensity of the Hawkes process is large. We establish large deviations for Hawkes processes in this regime as well as the regime when both the initial intensity and the time are large. We illustrate the strength of our results by discussing the applications to insurance and queueing systems.

Asymptotic Structure of Constrained Exponential Random Graph Models

In this paper, we study exponential random graph models subject to certain constraints. We obtain some general results about the asymptotic structure of the model. We show that there exists non-trivial regions in the phase plane where the asymptotic structure is uniform and there also exists non-trivial regions in the phase plane where the asymptotic structure is non-uniform. We will get more refined results for the star model and in particular the two-star model for which a sharp transition from uniform to non-uniform structure, a stationary point and phase transitions will be obtained.

Short Maturity Asian Options for the CEV Model

We present a rigorous study of the short maturity asymptotics for Asian options with continuous-time averaging, under the assumption that the underlying asset follows the Constant Elasticity of Variance (CEV) model. We present an analytical approximation for the Asian options prices which has the appropriate short maturity asymptotics, and demonstrate good numerical agreement of the asymptotic results with the results of Monte Carlo simulations and benchmark test cases for option parameters relevant in practical applications.

Lattice Gas Models with Long Range Interactions

In a one dimensional example, we find a first order phase transition by proving the entropy is non-differentiable along a certain curve.

A reduced-form model for level-1 limit order books

One popular approach to model the limit order books dynamics of the best bid and ask at level-1 is to use the reduced-form diffusion approximations. It is well known that the biggest contributing factor to the price movement is the imbalance of the best bid and ask. We investigate the data of the level-1 limit order books of a basket of stocks and study the numerical evidence of drift, correlation, volatility and their dependence on the imbalance. Based on the numerical discoveries, we develop a nonparametric discrete model for the dynamics of the best bid and ask, which can be approximated by a reduced-form model with analytical tractability that can fit the empirical data of correlation, volatilities and probability of price movement simultaneously.

Limit Theorems for Empirical Density of Greatest Common Divisors

The law of large numbers for the empirical density for the pairs of uniformly distributed integers with a given greatest common divisor is a classic result in number theory. In this paper, we study the large deviations of the empirical density. We will also obtain a rate of convergence to the normal distribution for the central limit theorem. Some generalizations are provided.
