Shigatse Astronomical Site Testing. I. Cloud-cover Climatology and Selected Local Meteorological Conditions

As the first paper in a Shigatse astronomical site-testing series, we present a multi-source assessment of cloud cover and selected local meteorological conditions at the Shigatse 40 m site on the southern Tibetan Plateau. The study combines CALIPSO-GOCCP active-lidar climatology, ISCCP HXG passive-satellite cloud fields, conventional total-cloud-amount observations from the Shigatse Meteorological Station, and on-site Weather Station measurements. Together, these records characterize Shigatse as a southern-plateau monsoon-transition cloud regime: the active-lidar climatology gives a moderate-to-low annual cloud fraction, and the cloudier months are concentrated in the June--September monsoon interval. In GOCCP, the annual mean cloud fraction is 42.1%, while the October--May low-cloud season has a mean cloud fraction of 26.3%, compared with 73.7% during the June--September monsoon interval. ISCCP gives higher absolute cloud fractions but supports the same seasonal phase and local spatial placement. The aligned 1988--2013 meteorological-station record gives a total-cloud-amount <=40% fraction of 80.7% during October--May, rising to 90.7% in the November--January core, and decreasing to 39.9% during June--September. The 2024--2025 Weather Station archive further shows high fractions of valid samples satisfying the adopted meteorological criteria during the low-cloud months: 92.6% for the October--May night-time proxy and 94.6% for the corresponding 24 h samples. These results identify Shigatse as a measured lower-latitude southern-plateau cloud-cover reference within China's site-testing network, with a well-defined October--May low-cloud observing period and a Shigatse--Ali low-cloud corridor for subsequent regional site testing.

Dynamic control of polarization conversion based on borophene nanostructures in optical communication bands

Polarized light has various potential applications in the communication bands, including optical communication, polarization imaging, quantum emission, and quantum communication. However, optimizing polarization control requires continuous improvements in areas such as dynamic tunability, materials, and efficiency. In this work, we propose a borophene-based structure capable of converting linearly polarized light into arbitrarily polarized light through the coherent excitation of localized surface plasmons (LSPs) in optical communication band. Furthermore, a double-layer borophene structure can be achieved by placing a second borophene array at the top of the first one with a 90{\deg} relative rotation of their crystalline plane. The rotation direction of the polarization state of the reflected light can be switched by independently controlling the carrier concentration of the two-layer borophene. Finally, a dipole source is used to realize the emission of polarized light, which is two orders of magnitude higher than the emission rate in free space, and the polarization state can be dynamically controlled by manipulating the carrier concentration. Our study is simple and compact, with potential applications in the fields of polarizers, polarization detectors, and quantum emitters.

The first Ka-band (26.1-35 GHz) blind line survey towards Orion KL

We conducted a Ka-band (26.1--35 GHz) line survey towards Orion KL using the TianMa 65-m Radio Telescope (TMRT). It is the first blind line survey in the Ka band, and achieves a sensitivity of mK level (1--3 mK at a spectral resolution of $\sim$1 km s$^{-1}$). In total, 592 Gaussian features are extracted. Among them, 257 radio recombination lines (RRLs) are identified. The maximum $Δn$ of RRLs of H, He and C are 20, 15, and 5, respectively. Through stacking, we have detected the $β$ lines of ion RRLs (RRLs of C$^+$ with possible contribution of other ions like O$^+$) for the first time, and tentative signal of the $γ$ lines of ion RRLs can also be seen on the stacked spectrum. Besides, 318 other line features were assigned to 37 molecular species, and ten of these species were not detected in the Q-band survey of TMRT. The vibrationally excited states of nine species were also detected. Emission of most species can be modeled under LTE. A number of transitions of E-CH3OH ($J_2-J_1$) display maser effects, which are confirmed by our modeling, and besides the bumping peak at $J\sim 6$ there is another peak at $J\sim 13$. Methylcyanoacetylene (CH$_3$C$_3$N) is detected in Orion KL for the first time. This work emphasizes that the Ka band, which was long-ignored for spectral line surveys, is very useful for surveying RRLs and molecular lines simultaneously.

First Detection of Radio Recombination Lines of Ions Heavier than Helium

We report the first detection of radio recombination lines (RRLs) of ions heavier than helium. In a highly sensitive multi-band (12--50 GHz) line survey toward Orion KL with the TianMa 65-m Radio Telescope (TMRT), we successfully detected more than fifteen unblended $α$ lines of RRLs of singly ionized species (XII) recombined from XIII. The Ka-band (35--50 GHz) spectrum also shows tentative signals of $β$ lines of ions. The detected lines can be successfully crossmatched with the the rest frequencies of RRLs of CII and/or OII. This finding greatly expands the connotation of ion RRLs, since before this work only two blended lines (105$α$ and 121$α$) of HeII had been reported. Our detected lines can be fitted simultaneously under assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). An abundance of CIII and OIII of 8.8$\times$10$^{-4}$ is obtained, avoiding the complexities of optical/infrared observations and the blending of RRLs of atoms. It is consistent with but approaches the upper bound of the value (10$^{-4}$--$10^{-3}$) estimated from optical/infrared observations. The effects of dielectronic recombination may contribute to enhancing the level populations even at large $n$. We expect future observations using radio interferometers could break the degeneracy between C and O, and help to reveal the ionization structure and dynamical evolution of various ionized regions.

Polaritonic coherent perfect absorption based on strong critical coupling between quasi-bound state in the continuum and exciton

Enhancement of light-matter interactions is of great importance for many nanophotonic devices, and one way to achieve it is to feed energy perfectly to the strongly coupled system. Here, we propose gap-perturbed dimerized gratings based on bulk WS2 for flexible control of the strong coupling between quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) and exciton. The simulation results show that when a gap perturbation is introduced into the system resulting in the Brillouin zone folding, BIC transforms into quasi-BIC whose quality factor (Q-factor) is related to the value of gap perturbation. The strong coupling results in the anti-crossover behavior of the absorption spectra, and thus a Rabi splitting energy of 0.235 eV is obtained. Temporal coupled-mode theory is employed to analyze the strong coupling system, and the absorption of the system could be enhanced, by modulating the damping rate of quasi-BIC to make the system satisfy the strong critical coupling condition. Furthermore, polaritonic coherent perfect absorption is achieved by using the two-port source excitation. This work could provide ideas for enhancing light-matter interactions and a promising prospect for polariton-based light-emitting or lasing devices.

A Q-band line survey towards Orion KL using the Tianma radio telescope

We have conducted a line survey towards Orion KL using the Q-band receiver of Tianma 65 m radio telescope (TMRT), covering 34.8--50 GHz with a velocity resolution between 0.79 km s$^{-1}$ and 0.55 km s$^{-1}$ respectively. The observations reach a sensitivity on the level of 1-8 mK, proving that the TMRT is sensitive for conducting deep line surveys. In total, 597 Gaussian features are extracted. Among them, 177 radio recombination lines (RRLs) are identified, including 126, 40 and 11 RRLs of hydrogen, helium and carbon, with a maximum $Δn$ of 16, 7, and 3, respectively. The carbon RRLs are confirmed to originate from photodissociation regions with a $V_{\rm LSR}\sim$9 km s$^{-1}$. In addition, 371 molecular transitions of 53 molecular species are identified. Twenty-one molecular species of this survey were not firmly detected in the Q band by Rizzo et al. (2017), including species such as H$_2$CS, HCOOH, C$_2$H$_5$OH, H$_2^{13}$CO, H$_2$CCO, CH$_3$CHO, CH$_2$OCH$_2$, HCN $v_2=1$, and CH$_3$OCHO $v_t=1$. In particular, the vibrationally excited states of ethyl cyanide (C$_2$H$_5$CN $v$13/$v$21) are for the first time firmly detected in the Q band. NH$_3$ (15,15) and (16,16) are identified, and they are so far the highest transitions of the NH$_3$ inversion lines detected towards Orion KL. All the identified lines can be reproduced by a radiative transfer model.

Terahertz Polarization Conversion from Optical Dichroism in a Topological Dirac Semimetal

Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSM), such as Cd$_3$As$_2$ and Na$_3$Bi, exhibits strong optical dichroism with contrasting dielectric permittivity along different crystal axes. However, such optical dichroism is often overlooked in the study of TDSM-based optoelectronic devices, and whether such optical dichroism can lead to unique functionalities not found under the isotropic approximation remain an open question thus far. Here we show that the optical dischroism in TDSM lead to starkly different terahertz (THz) responses and device performance as compared to the isotropic case. Using finite-difference time-domain simulations of a Cd$_3$As$_2$-based metasurface, we demonstrate that such optical dichroism can lead to an unexpected THz wave polarization conversion even if the metasurface structure remains C$_4$ four-fold rotationally symmetric, a practically useful feature not achievable under the isotropic model of TDSM. Our findings concretely reveal the contrasting spectral response between isotropic and anisotropic media, and shed important light on the capability of anisotropic TDSM in THz applications, leading not just to the more accurate device modelling, but also a new route in realizing THz waves polarization conversion without the need of complex device morphology commonly employed in conventional polarization converters.

Port Reconfigurable Phase-Change Optical Resonator

Active control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves are highly desirable for advanced photonic device technology, such as optical cloaking, active camouflage and information processing. Designing optical resonators with high ease-of-control and reconfigurability remains a open challenge thus far. Here we propose a novel mechanism to continuously reconfigure an optical resonator between one-port and two-port configurations via \emph{phase-change material} for efficient optical modulation. By incorporating a phase-change material VO$_2$ substrate into a photonic crystal optical resonator, we computationally show that the system behaves as a one-port device with near-perfect absorption and two-port device with high transmission up to 92% when VO$_2$ is in the metallic rutile phase and insulating monoclinic phase, respectively. The optical response can be continuously and reversibly modulated between various intermediate states. More importantly, the proposed device is compatible with wide-angle operation and is robust against structural distortion. Our findings reveal a novel device architecture of \emph{port reconfigurable} optical resonator uniquely enabled by switchable optical properties of phase change material.

Low temperature specific heat of 12442-type KCa_2Fe_4As_4F_2 single crystals

Low-temperature specific heat (SH) is measured for the 12442-type KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ single crystal under different magnetic fields. A clear SH jump with the height of $ΔC/T|_{T_c}$ = 130 mJ/mol K$^2$ is observed at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. It is found that the electronic SH coefficient $Δγ(H)$ quickly increases when the field is in the low-field region below 3 T and then considerably slows down the increase with a further increase in the field, which indicates a rather strong anisotropy or multi-gap feature with a small minimum in the superconducting gap(s). The temperature-dependent SH data indicates the presence of the $T^2$ term, which supplies further information and supports the picture with a line-nodal gap structure. Moreover, the onset point of the SH transition remains almost unchanged under the field as high as 9 T, which is similar to that observed in cuprates, and placed this system in the middle between the BCS limit and the Bose-Einstein condensation.

A Multifuntional Frequency-selective Polarization Converter for broadband backward-scattering reduction

In this paper, we combine the design of band-pass frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) with polarization converters to realize a broadband frequency-selective polarization converter (FSPC) with lowbackward scattering, which consists of the top polarization conversion layer backed by a multi-layer bandpass FSS. It is numerically demonstrated that the 1 dB transmission window can be obtained from 8.5 GHz to 11 GHz with a 25.6% fractional bandwidth (FBW), and the bandwidth of reflection below -10 dB is up to 92% from 5.6 GHz to 15.13 GHz. Moreover, the proposed device can achieve two polarization conversion bands (5.66-6.9 GHz and 12.8-15.2GHz) with the polarization conversion ratio over 90%. Besides, by arranging the proposed structure in a checkerboard-like distribution, the backward scattering energy can be reduced in a wide frequency band ranging from 4 to 16 GHz. Both simulation and experimental results are in good agreements, which demonstrates our design strategy. Compared with the conventional polarization conversion designs, the proposed design presents an extra frequency-selective performance and hence can be applied to various practical situations, for instance, working as radomes to transmit the in-band signals with high-efficiency while keeping low-backward scattering for the out-of-band waves.

Strong Pauli paramagnetic effect in the upper critical field of KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

Recently, 12442 system of Fe-based superconductors has attracted considerable attention owing to its unique double-FeAs-layer structure. A steep increase in the in-plane upper critical field with cooling has been observed near the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, in KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ single crystals. Herein, we report a high-field investigation on upper critical field of this material over a wide temperature range, and both out-of-plane ($H\|c$, $H_{c2}^{c}$) and in-plane ($H\|ab$, $H_{c2}^{ab}$) directions have been measured. A sublinear temperature-dependent behavior is observed for the out-of-plane $H_{c2}^{c}$, whereas strong convex curvature with cooling is observed for the in-plane $H_{c2}^{ab}$. Such behaviors could not be described by the conventional Werthamer--Helfand--Hohenberg (WHH) model. The data analysis based on the WHH model by considering the spin aspects reveals a large Maki parameter $α=9$, indicating that the in-plane upper critical field is affected by a very strong Pauli paramagnetic effect.

Two-Gap Superconductivity in CaFe_{0.88}Co_{0.12}AsF Revealed by Temperature Dependence of the Lower Critical Field H_{c1}^c(T)

Gap symmetry and structure are crucial issues in understanding the superconducting mechanism of unconventional superconductors. Here we report an in-depth investigation on the out-of-plane lower critical field $H_{c1}^{c}$ of fluorine-based 1111 system superconductor CaFe$_{0.88}$Co$_{0.12}$AsF with $T_c$ = 21 K. A pronounced two-gap feature is revealed by the kink in the temperature dependent $H_{c1}^c(T)$ curve. The magnitudes of the two gaps are determined to be $Δ_1$ = 0.86 meV and $Δ_2$ = 4.48 meV, which account for 74% and 26% of the total superfluid density respectively. Our results suggest that the local antiferromagnetic exchange pairing picture is favored compared to the Fermi surface nesting scenario.

Multiple gaps revealed by low temperature specific heat in the 1111-type CaFe_{0.88}Co_{0.12}AsF single crystals

Low-temperature specific heat (SH) is measured on the 1111-type CaFe_{0.88}Co_{0.12}AsF single crystals under different magnetic fields. A clear SH jump with the height ΔC/T|_Tc = 10.4 mJ/mol K^2 was observed at the superconducting transition temperature T_c. The electronic SH coefficient Δγ(B) increases linearly with the field below 5 T and a kink is observed around 5 T, indicating a multi-gap feature in the present system. Such a sign is also reflected in the Tc-B data. A detailed analysis shows that this behavior can be interpreted in terms of a two-gap scenario with the ratio Δ_L=Δ_S = 2:8-4:5.

Single-crystal growth and extremely high H_c2 of 12442-type Fe-based superconductor KCa_2Fe_4As_4F_2

Millimeter sized single crystals of KCa_2Fe_4As_4F_2 were grown using a self-flux method. The chemical compositions and crystal structure were characterized carefully. Superconductivity with the critical transition T_c = 33.5 K was confirmed by both the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Moreover, the upper critical field H_c2 was studied by the resistivity measurements under different magnetic fields. A rather steep increase for the in-plane H_c2^ab with cooling, dμ_0H_c2^a/dT|T_c = -50.9 T/K, was observed, indicating an extremely high upper critical field. Possible origins for this behavior were discussed. The findings in our work is a great promotion both for understanding the physical properties and applications of 12442-type Fe-based superconductors.

Unusual evolution of B_{c2} and T_c with inclined fields in restacked TaS_2 nanosheets

Recently we reported an enhanced superconductivity in restacked monolayer TaS_2 nanosheets compared with the bulk TaS_2, pointing to the exotic physical properties of low dimensional systems. Here we tune the superconducting properties of this system with magnetic field along different directions, where a strong Pauli paramagnetic spin-splitting effect is found in this system. Importantly, an unusual enhancement as high as 3.8 times of the upper critical field B_{c2}, as compered with the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model and Tinkham model, is observed under the inclined external magnetic field. Moreover, with the out-of-plane field fixed, we find that the superconducting transition temperature T_c can be enhanced by increasing the in-plane field and forms a dome-shaped phase diagram. An extended GL model considering the special microstructure with wrinkles was proposed to describe the results. The restacked crystal structure without inversion center along with the strong spin-orbit coupling may also play an important role for our observations.

Quinone-based Switches for Candidate Building Blocks of Molecular Junctions with QTAIM and the Stress Tensor

The current work investigates candidate building blocks based on molecular junctions from hydrogen transfer tautomerization in the benzoquinone-like core of an azophenine molecule with QTAIM and the recently-introduced stress tensor trajectory analysis. We find that in particular the stress tensor trajectories are well suited to describe the mechanism of the switching process. The effects of an Fe-dopant atom coordinated to the quinone ring, as well as F and Cl substitution of different ring-hydrogens, are investigated and the new QTAIM and stress tensor analysis is used to draw conclusions on the effectiveness of such molecules as molecular switches in nano-sized electronic circuits. We find that the coordinated Fe-dopant greatly improves the switching properties, both in terms of the tautomerisation barrier that has to be crossed in the switching process and the expected conductance behavior, while the effects of hydrogen substitution are more subtle. The absence of the Fe-dopant atom led to impaired functioning of the switch 'OFF' mechanism as well as coinciding with the formation of closed-shell H---H bond critical points that indicated a strained or electron deficient environment. Our analysis demonstrates promise for future use in design of molecular electronic devices.

In situ annealing effects on the iron-based ladder material BaFe_2S_3: A route to improve the crystal quality

We have grown single crystals of the iron-based ladder material BaFe_2S_3, which is superconductive under high pressure, adopting different conditions. By comparing the behaviors of these samples, it is found that the in situ annealing process can affect the crystal structure and the electrical transport, enhance the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, and reduce the extrinsic ferromagnetic component of the system. An in-depth analysis indicates that the crystal quality is improved by the in situ annealing in terms of reducing both the Fe deficiency and the Fe impurity in the samples. The improvement of the sample quality will facilitate the investigations on the intrinsic properties of this material.

The Role of Weak Interactions in Characterizing Peptide Folding Preferences using a QTAIM Interpretation of the Ramachandran Plot (ϕ-ψ)

The Ramachandran plot is a potent way to understand structures of biomolecules, however, the original formulation of the Ramachandran plot only considers backbone conformations. We formulate a new interpretation of the original Ramachandran plot ($ϕ-ψ$) that can include a description of the weaker interactions including both the hydrogen bonds and H$---$H bonds as a new way to derive insights into the phenomenon of peptide folding. We use QTAIM (quantum theory of atoms in molecules) to interpret the Ramachandran plot. Specifically, we show that QTAIM analysis permits identifying key regions of the Ramachandran plot without the need for massive data sets. A highly non-linear relationship is found between the QTAIM vector-derived interpreted Ramachandran plot and the conventional Ramachandran plot ($ϕ-ψ$) demonstrating that this new approach is not a trivial coordinate transformation. An investigation of both the backbone and the weaker bonds within the framework of the QTAIM interpreted Ramachandran plot was found to be in line with physical intuition. The least-preferred directions calculated for the hydrogen bonds and H$---$H bonds were found to coincide with the 'unlikely' regions of the Ramachandran plot.
