Global Weak Solutions of a Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard System for Incompressible Two-phase flows with Thermo-induced Marangoni Effects

We study a diffuse-interface model that describes the dynamics of two-phase incompressible flows driven by the thermo-induced Marangoni effect. The hydrodynamic system consists of the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid velocity, the convective Cahn-Hilliard equation for the phase-field variable, and a convective heat equation for the (relative) temperature. For the initial-boundary value problem in two and three dimensions with variable viscosity, mobility, thermal diffusivity, and a physically relevant singular potential, we establish the existence of global weak solutions. The proof relies on an implicit-explicit time discretization scheme that preserves the $L^\infty$-bounds of both the phase-field variable and the temperature. When the spatial dimension is two, we prove the uniqueness of weak solutions for the case with matched densities under suitable assumptions on the initial temperature, mobility, and thermal diffusivity.

VIAFormer: Voxel-Image Alignment Transformer for High-Fidelity Voxel Refinement

We propose VIAFormer, a Voxel-Image Alignment Transformer model designed for Multi-view Conditioned Voxel Refinement--the task of repairing incomplete noisy voxels using calibrated multi-view images as guidance. Its effectiveness stems from a synergistic design: an Image Index that provides explicit 3D spatial grounding for 2D image tokens, a Correctional Flow objective that learns a direct voxel-refinement trajectory, and a Hybrid Stream Transformer that enables robust cross-modal fusion. Experiments show that VIAFormer establishes a new state of the art in correcting both severe synthetic corruptions and realistic artifacts on the voxel shape obtained from powerful Vision Foundation Models. Beyond benchmarking, we demonstrate VIAFormer as a practical and reliable bridge in real-world 3D creation pipelines, paving the way for voxel-based methods to thrive in large-model, big-data wave.

Global well-posedness for a two-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard-Boussinesq system with singular potential

We study a general Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard-Boussinesq system that describes the motion of a mixture of two incompressible Newtonian fluids with thermo-induced Marangoni effects. The Cahn-Hilliard dynamics of the binary mixture is governed by aggregation/diffusion competition of the free energy with a physically-relevant logarithmic potential. The coupled system is studied in a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ and is supplemented with a no-slip condition for the fluid velocity, homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions for the order parameter and the chemical potential, homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for the relative temperature, and suitable initial conditions. For the corresponding initial boundary value problem, we first prove the existence of global weak solutions and their continuous dependence with respect to the initial data. Under additional assumptions on the initial data, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a global strong solution and the validity of the strict separation property.

CIDER: Counterfactual-Invariant Diffusion-based GNN Explainer for Causal Subgraph Inference

Inferring causal links or subgraphs corresponding to a specific phenotype or label based solely on measured data is an important yet challenging task, which is also different from inferring causal nodes. While Graph Neural Network (GNN) Explainers have shown potential in subgraph identification, existing methods with GNN often offer associative rather than causal insights. This lack of transparency and explainability hinders our understanding of their results and also underlying mechanisms. To address this issue, we propose a novel method of causal link/subgraph inference, called CIDER: Counterfactual-Invariant Diffusion-based GNN ExplaineR, by implementing both counterfactual and diffusion implementations. In other words, it is a model-agnostic and task-agnostic framework for generating causal explanations based on a counterfactual-invariant and diffusion process, which provides not only causal subgraphs due to counterfactual implementation but reliable causal links due to the diffusion process. Specifically, CIDER is first formulated as an inference task that generatively provides the two distributions of one causal subgraph and another spurious subgraph. Then, to enhance the reliability, we further model the CIDER framework as a diffusion process. Thus, using the causal subgraph distribution, we can explicitly quantify the contribution of each subgraph to a phenotype/label in a counterfactual manner, representing each subgraph's causal strength. From a causality perspective, CIDER is an interventional causal method, different from traditional association studies or observational causal approaches, and can also reduce the effects of unobserved confounders. We evaluate CIDER on both synthetic and real-world datasets, which all demonstrate the superiority of CIDER over state-of-the-art methods.

The Effect of Increased Access to IVF on Women's Careers

Motherhood is the main contributor to gender gaps in the labor market. IVF is a method of assisted reproduction that can delay fertility, which results in decreased motherhood income penalty. In this research, I estimate the effects of expanded access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) arising from state insurance mandates. I use a difference-in-differences model to estimate the effect of increased IVF accessibility for delaying childbirth and decreasing the motherhood income penalty. Using the fertility supplement dataset from the Current Population Survey (CPS), I estimate how outcomes change in states when they implement their mandates compared to how outcomes change in states that are not changing their policies. The results indicate that IVF mandates increase the probability of motherhood by 38 by 3.1 percentage points (p<0.01). However, the results provide no evidence that IVF insurance mandates impact women's earnings.

Automatically layout and visualize the biological pathway map with spectral graph theory

The pathway is a biological term that refers to a series of interactions between molecules in a cell that causes a certain product or a change in the cell. Pathway analysis is a powerful method for gene expression analysis. Through pathway maps, the lists of genes that are differentially expressed across the given phenotypes are translated into various biological phenomena. Visualizing a pathway map manually is a common practice nowadays because of the limitations of existing solutions to draw complicated graphs (i.e. directed graphs, graphs with edge crossings, etc). This project provides a solution to draw pathway maps automatically based on spectral graph theory and topological sort. Various methods are taken to enhance pathway maps' readability. Significant reductions in the number of edge crossings and the sum of adjacent nodes are achieved.

GPU-accelerated Faster Mean Shift with euclidean distance metrics

Handling clustering problems are important in data statistics, pattern recognition and image processing. The mean-shift algorithm, a common unsupervised algorithms, is widely used to solve clustering problems. However, the mean-shift algorithm is restricted by its huge computational resource cost. In previous research[10], we proposed a novel GPU-accelerated Faster Mean-shift algorithm, which greatly speed up the cosine-embedding clustering problem. In this study, we extend and improve the previous algorithm to handle Euclidean distance metrics. Different from conventional GPU-based mean-shift algorithms, our algorithm adopts novel Seed Selection & Early Stopping approaches, which greatly increase computing speed and reduce GPU memory consumption. In the simulation testing, when processing a 200K points clustering problem, our algorithm achieved around 3 times speedup compared to the state-of-the-art GPU-based mean-shift algorithms with optimized GPU memory consumption. Moreover, in this study, we implemented a plug-and-play model for faster mean-shift algorithm, which can be easily deployed. Implicit Look-alike Modelling in Display Ads: Transfer Collaborative Filtering to CTR Estimation

User behaviour targeting is essential in online advertising. Compared with sponsored search keyword targeting and contextual advertising page content targeting, user behaviour targeting builds users' interest profiles via tracking their online behaviour and then delivers the relevant ads according to each user's interest, which leads to higher targeting accuracy and thus more improved advertising performance. The current user profiling methods include building keywords and topic tags or mapping users onto a hierarchical taxonomy. However, to our knowledge, there is no previous work that explicitly investigates the user online visits similarity and incorporates such similarity into their ad response prediction. In this work, we propose a general framework which learns the user profiles based on their online browsing behaviour, and transfers the learned knowledge onto prediction of their ad response. Technically, we propose a transfer learning model based on the probabilistic latent factor graphic models, where the users' ad response profiles are generated from their online browsing profiles. The large-scale experiments based on real-world data demonstrate significant improvement of our solution over some strong baselines.
