Scenarios Engineering driven Autonomous Transportation in Open-Pit Mines

One critical bottleneck that impedes the development and deployment of autonomous transportation in open-pit mines is guaranteed robustness and trustworthiness in prohibitively extreme scenarios. In this research, a novel scenarios engineering (SE) methodology for the autonomous mining truck is proposed for open-pit mines. SE increases the trustworthiness and robustness of autonomous trucks from four key components: Scenario Feature Extractor, Intelligence & Index (I&I), Calibration & Certification (C&C), and Verification & Validation (V&V). Scenario feature extractor is a comprehensive pipeline approach that captures complex interactions and latent dependencies in complex mining scenarios. I&I effectively enhances the quality of the training dataset, thereby establishing a solid foundation for autonomous transportation in mining areas. C&C is grounded in the intrinsic regulation, capabilities, and contributions of the intelligent systems employed in autonomous transportation to align with traffic participants in the real world and ensure their performance through certification. V&V process ensures that the autonomous transportation system can be correctly implemented, while validation focuses on evaluating the ability of the well-trained model to operate efficiently in the complex and dynamic conditions of the open-pit mines. This methodology addresses the unique challenges of autonomous transportation in open-pit mining, promoting productivity, safety, and performance in mining operations.

Simulation Framework for Vehicle and Electric Scooter Interaction

The number of shared micro-mobility services such as electric scooters (e-scooters) has an increasing trend due to the advantages of high efficiency and low cost in short-range travel in urban areas. However, due to the unique characteristics of moving behavior, it is commonly seen that e-scooters may share the road with other motor vehicles. The lack of protection may lead to severe injury for e-scooter riders. The scenario where an e-scooter crosses an intersection or makes a lane change while interacting with an approaching vehicle was commonly seen in real-life traffic data. Such scenarios are hazardous because the intention and behavior of the e-scooter may vary significantly based on the traffic environment conditions. Furthermore, some other vehicles may occlude the presence of the moving e-scooter, which can result in an unexpected collision. In this paper, we propose a simulation platform to mimic the interactions between vehicles and e-scooters. Several traffic scenarios are studied via qualitative and quantitative analysis. The proposed framework is shown to be valuable and efficient for the general risk analysis for vehicle and e-scooter interactions (VEI).

FusionPlanner: A Multi-task Motion Planner for Mining Trucks via Multi-sensor Fusion

In recent years, significant achievements have been made in motion planning for intelligent vehicles. However, as a typical unstructured environment, open-pit mining attracts limited attention due to its complex operational conditions and adverse environmental factors. A comprehensive paradigm for unmanned transportation in open-pit mines is proposed in this research. Firstly, we propose a multi-task motion planning algorithm, called FusionPlanner, for autonomous mining trucks by the multi-sensor fusion method to adapt both lateral and longitudinal control tasks for unmanned transportation. Then, we develop a novel benchmark called MiningNav, which offers three validation approaches to evaluate the trustworthiness and robustness of well-trained algorithms in transportation roads of open-pit mines. Finally, we introduce the Parallel Mining Simulator (PMS), a new high-fidelity simulator specifically designed for open-pit mining scenarios. PMS enables the users to manage and control open-pit mine transportation from both the single-truck control and multi-truck scheduling perspectives. The performance of FusionPlanner is tested by MiningNav in PMS, and the empirical results demonstrate a significant reduction in the number of collisions and takeovers of our planner. We anticipate our unmanned transportation paradigm will bring mining trucks one step closer to trustworthiness and robustness in continuous round-the-clock unmanned transportation.

Infrared thermochromic antenna composite for self-adaptive thermoregulation

Self-adaptive thermoregulation, the mechanism living organisms use to balance their temperature, holds great promise for decarbonizing cooling and heating processes. The functionality can be effectively emulated by engineering the thermal emissivity of materials to adapt to background temperature variations. Yet, solutions that marry large emissivity switching ($Δε$) with scalability, cost-effectiveness and design freedom are still lacking. Here, we fill this gap by introducing infrared dipole antennas made of tunable thermochromic materials. We demonstrate that non-spherical antennas (rods, stars and flakes) made of vanadium-dioxide can exhibit a massive (~200-fold) increase in their absorption cross-section as temperature rises. Embedding these antennas in polymer films, or simply spraying them directly, creates free-form thermoregulation composites, featuring an outstanding $Δε\sim0.6$ in spectral ranges that can be tuned at will. Our research paves the way for versatile self-adaptive heat management solutions (coatings, fibers, membranes and films) that could find application in radiative-cooling, heat-sensing, thermal-camouflage, and other.

PaniniQA: Enhancing Patient Education Through Interactive Question Answering

Patient portal allows discharged patients to access their personalized discharge instructions in electronic health records (EHRs). However, many patients have difficulty understanding or memorizing their discharge instructions. In this paper, we present PaniniQA, a patient-centric interactive question answering system designed to help patients understand their discharge instructions. PaniniQA first identifies important clinical content from patients' discharge instructions and then formulates patient-specific educational questions. In addition, PaniniQA is also equipped with answer verification functionality to provide timely feedback to correct patients' misunderstandings. Our comprehensive automatic and human evaluation results demonstrate our PaniniQA is capable of improving patients' mastery of their medical instructions through effective interactions

A New Scoring Method for the Evaluation of Vehicle Road Departure Detection Systems

Road departure detection systems (RDDSs) for eliminating unintentional road departure collisions have been developed and equipped on some commercial vehicles in recent years. In order to provide a standardized and objective performance evaluation of RDDSs without the affections of systems complex nature of RDDSs and the design requirements, this paper proposes the development of the scoring method for evaluating vehicle RDDSs. Both flat road edge and vertical road edge are considered in the proposed scoring method, which combines two key variables: 1) the lateral distance of vehicle from road edge when RDW triggers; 2) the lateral distance of vehicle from road edge when RKA triggers. Two main criteria of road departure warning (RDW) and Road Keeping Assistance (RKA) are used to describe the performance of RDDSs.

Motion Planning for Autonomous Driving: The State of the Art and Future Perspectives

Intelligent vehicles (IVs) have gained worldwide attention due to their increased convenience, safety advantages, and potential commercial value. Despite predictions of commercial deployment by 2025, implementation remains limited to small-scale validation, with precise tracking controllers and motion planners being essential prerequisites for IVs. This paper reviews state-of-the-art motion planning methods for IVs, including pipeline planning and end-to-end planning methods. The study examines the selection, expansion, and optimization operations in a pipeline method, while it investigates training approaches and validation scenarios for driving tasks in end-to-end methods. Experimental platforms are reviewed to assist readers in choosing suitable training and validation strategies. A side-by-side comparison of the methods is provided to highlight their strengths and limitations, aiding system-level design choices. Current challenges and future perspectives are also discussed in this survey.

Decomposition of planar graphs with forbidden configurations

A $(d,h)$-decomposition of a graph $G$ is an ordered pair $(D, H)$ such that $H$ is a subgraph of $G$ of maximum degree at most $h$ and $D$ is an acyclic orientation of $G-E(H)$ with maximum out-degree at most $d$. In this paper, we prove that for $l \in \{5, 6, 7, 8, 9\}$, every planar graph without $4$- and $l$-cycles is $(2,1)$-decomposable. As a consequence, for every planar graph $G$ without $4$- and $l$-cycles, there exists a matching $M$, such that $G - M$ is $3$-DP-colorable and has Alon-Tarsi number at most $3$. In particular, $G$ is $1$-defective $3$-DP-colorable, $1$-defective $3$-paintable and 1-defective 3-choosable. These strengthen the results in [Discrete Appl. Math. 157~(2) (2009) 433--436] and [Discrete Math. 343 (2020) 111797].

Point Cloud Classification Using Content-based Transformer via Clustering in Feature Space

Recently, there have been some attempts of Transformer in 3D point cloud classification. In order to reduce computations, most existing methods focus on local spatial attention, but ignore their content and fail to establish relationships between distant but relevant points. To overcome the limitation of local spatial attention, we propose a point content-based Transformer architecture, called PointConT for short. It exploits the locality of points in the feature space (content-based), which clusters the sampled points with similar features into the same class and computes the self-attention within each class, thus enabling an effective trade-off between capturing long-range dependencies and computational complexity. We further introduce an Inception feature aggregator for point cloud classification, which uses parallel structures to aggregate high-frequency and low-frequency information in each branch separately. Extensive experiments show that our PointConT model achieves a remarkable performance on point cloud shape classification. Especially, our method exhibits 90.3% Top-1 accuracy on the hardest setting of ScanObjectNN. Source code of this paper is available at https://github.com/yahuiliu99/PointConT.

Risk assessment and mitigation of e-scooter crashes with naturalistic driving data

Recently, e-scooter-involved crashes have increased significantly but little information is available about the behaviors of on-road e-scooter riders. Most existing e-scooter crash research was based on retrospectively descriptive media reports, emergency room patient records, and crash reports. This paper presents a naturalistic driving study with a focus on e-scooter and vehicle encounters. The goal is to quantitatively measure the behaviors of e-scooter riders in different encounters to help facilitate crash scenario modeling, baseline behavior modeling, and the potential future development of in-vehicle mitigation algorithms. The data was collected using an instrumented vehicle and an e-scooter rider wearable system, respectively. A three-step data analysis process is developed. First, semi-automatic data labeling extracts e-scooter rider images and non-rider human images in similar environments to train an e-scooter-rider classifier. Then, a multi-step scene reconstruction pipeline generates vehicle and e-scooter trajectories in all encounters. The final step is to model e-scooter rider behaviors and e-scooter-vehicle encounter scenarios. A total of 500 vehicle to e-scooter interactions are analyzed. The variables pertaining to the same are also discussed in this paper.

A Wearable Data Collection System for Studying Micro-Level E-Scooter Behavior in Naturalistic Road Environment

As one of the most popular micro-mobility options, e-scooters are spreading in hundreds of big cities and college towns in the US and worldwide. In the meantime, e-scooters are also posing new challenges to traffic safety. In general, e-scooters are suggested to be ridden in bike lanes/sidewalks or share the road with cars at the maximum speed of about 15-20 mph, which is more flexible and much faster than the pedestrains and bicyclists. These features make e-scooters challenging for human drivers, pedestrians, vehicle active safety modules, and self-driving modules to see and interact. To study this new mobility option and address e-scooter riders' and other road users' safety concerns, this paper proposes a wearable data collection system for investigating the micro-level e-Scooter motion behavior in a Naturalistic road environment. An e-Scooter-based data acquisition system has been developed by integrating LiDAR, cameras, and GPS using the robot operating system (ROS). Software frameworks are developed to support hardware interfaces, sensor operation, sensor synchronization, and data saving. The integrated system can collect data continuously for hours, meeting all the requirements including calibration accuracy and capability of collecting the vehicle and e-Scooter encountering data.

A Novel Method for Lane-change Maneuver in Urban Driving Using Predictive Markov Decision Process

Lane-change maneuver has always been a challenging task for both manual and autonomous driving, especially in an urban setting. In particular, the uncertainty in predicting the behavior of other vehicles on the road leads to indecisive actions while changing lanes, which, might result in traffic congestion and cause safety concerns. This paper analyzes the factors related to uncertainty such as speed range change and lane change so as to design a predictive Markov decision process for lane-change maneuver in the urban setting. A hidden Markov model is developed for modeling uncertainties of surrounding vehicles. The reward model uses the crash probabilities and the feasibility/distance to the goal as primary parameters. Numerical simulation and analysis of two traffic scenarios are completed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Peek into the Future Camera-based Occupant Sensing in Configurable Cabins for Autonomous Vehicles

The development of fully autonomous vehicles (AVs) can potentially eliminate drivers and introduce unprecedented seating design. However, highly flexible seat configurations may lead to occupants' unconventional poses and actions. Understanding occupant behaviors and prioritize safety features become eye-catching topics in the AV research frontier. Visual sensors have the advantages of cost-efficiency and high-fidelity imaging and become more widely applied for in-car sensing purposes. Occlusion is one big concern for this type of system in crowded car cabins. It is important but largely unknown about how a visual-sensing framework will look like to support 2-D and 3-D human pose tracking towards highly configurable seats. As one of the first studies to touch this topic, we peek into the future camera-based sensing framework via a simulation experiment. Constructed representative car-cabin, seat layouts, and occupant sizes, camera coverage from different angles and positions is simulated and calculated. The comprehensive coverage data are synthesized through an optimization process to determine the camera layout and overall occupant coverage. The results show the needs and design of a different number of cameras to fully or partially cover all the occupants with changeable configurations of up to six seats.

SceNDD: A Scenario-based Naturalistic Driving Dataset

In this paper, we propose SceNDD: a scenario-based naturalistic driving dataset that is built upon data collected from an instrumented vehicle in downtown Indianapolis. The data collection was completed in 68 driving sessions with different drivers, where each session lasted about 20--40 minutes. The main goal of creating this dataset is to provide the research community with real driving scenarios that have diverse trajectories and driving behaviors. The dataset contains ego-vehicle's waypoints, velocity, yaw angle, as well as non-ego actor's waypoints, velocity, yaw angle, entry-time, and exit-time. Certain flexibility is provided to users so that actors, sensors, lanes, roads, and obstacles can be added to the existing scenarios. We used a Joint Probabilistic Data Association (JPDA) tracker to detect non-ego vehicles on the road. We present some preliminary results of the proposed dataset and a few applications associated with it. The complete dataset is expected to be released by early 2023.

A Method for Crash Prediction and Avoidance Using Hidden Markov Models

In recent years, automotive technology has made a steady progress. In particular, Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) has enabled many safety features in commercial vehicles, for instance, pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, emergency automatic braking, etc. Although these features provide drivers with a safer operational environment, crashes still happen occasionally due to the complex road conditions and the unpredictable movement of road users including vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, and non-motorized vehicles. In this paper, we aim at predicting the possibilities of crashes between vehicles on highway and implementing an appropriate active safety system to prevent the same. In particular, hidden Markov models are developed for the traffic lanes and speed change of vehicles on highway. Algorithms are developed for the prediction of crash probabilities. Simulation experiments are conducted using Matlab, the results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed research.

An extension of Thomassen's result on choosability

Thomassen proved that all planar graphs are $5$-choosable. Škrekovski strengthened the result by showing that all $K_{5}$-minor-free graphs are $5$-choosable. Dvořák and Postle pointed out that all planar graphs are DP-$5$-colorable. In this note, we first improve these results by showing that every $K_{5}$-minor-free or $K_{3, 3}$-minor-free graph is DP-$5$-colorable. In the final section, we further improve these results under the term strictly $f$-degenerate transversal.

Extreme Low Resolution Activity Recognition with Confident Spatial-Temporal Attention Transfer

Activity recognition on extreme low-resolution videos, e.g., a resolution of 12*16 pixels, plays a vital role in far-view surveillance and privacy-preserving multimedia analysis. Low-resolution videos only contain limited information. Given the fact that one same activity may be represented by videos in both high resolution (HR) and extreme low resolution (eLR), it is worth studying to utilize the relevant HR data to improve the eLR activity recognition. In this work, we propose a novel Confident Spatial-Temporal Attention Transfer (CSTAT) for eLR activity recognition. CSTAT can acquire information from HR data by reducing the attention differences with a transfer-learning strategy. Besides, the credibility of the supervisory signal is also taken into consideration for a more confident transferring process. Experimental results on two well-known datasets, i.e., UCF101 and HMDB51, demonstrate that, the proposed method can effectively improve the accuracy of eLR activity recognition and achieve an accuracy of 59.23% on 12*16 videos in HMDB51, a state-of-the-art performance.

Star edge-coloring of some special graphs

The star chromatic index of a multigraph $G$, denoted by $χ_{\mathrm{star}}'(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to properly color the edges of $G$ such that no path or cycle of length $4$ is bicolored. In this paper, we study the star edge-coloring of Halin graphs, $k$-power graphs and the generalized Petersen graphs $P(3n, n)$.
