An Antenna Array Initial Condition Calibration Method for Integrated Optical Phased Array

This paper presents a modified rotating element electric field vector (modified REV) method to calibrate the antenna array initial condition of an optical phased array (OPA) device. The new method follows a similar sequential individual antenna phase calibration process while it modifies the algorithm to avoid possible π phase error in traditional REV when large initial phase distribution and finite optical power measurement accuracy present. We show that the method produces statistically more accurate and predictable calibration result which is highly desired in practice.

Compact optical phased array using a serial grating antenna design

We propose an on-chip Si photonics optical phased array based on a serial grating design which eliminates the use of directional couplers in previous designs. It significantly reduces overall phased array size especially when the number of the antenna is small which is often demanded in practice. The simulation results show our design reduces overall phased array size, increases optical power utilization while maintains comparable far field performance.

Defect states emerging from a non-Hermitian flat band of photonic zero modes

We show the existence of a flat band consisting of photonic zero modes in a gain and loss modulated lattice system, as a result of the underlying non-Hermitian particle-hole symmetry. This general finding explains the previous observation in parity-time symmetric systems where non-Hermitian particle-hole symmetry is hidden. We further discuss the defect states in these systems, whose emergence can be viewed as an unconventional alignment of a pseudo-spin under the influence of a complex-valued pseudo-magnetic field. These defect states also behave as a chain with two types of links, one rigid in a unit cell and one soft between unit cells, as the defect states become increasingly localized with the gain and loss strength. A realistic photonic design is presented based on coupled InP/InGaAsP waveguides, and we also extend the discussion to two- and three-dimensional lattices.

Optical fluxes in coupled $\cal PT$-symmetric photonic structures

In this work we first examine transverse and longitudinal fluxes in a $\cal PT$-symmetric photonic dimer using a coupled-mode theory. Several surprising understandings are obtained from this perspective: The longitudinal flux shows that the $\cal PT$ transition in a dimer can be regarded as a classical effect, despite its analogy to $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum mechanics. The longitudinal flux also indicates that the so-called giant amplification in the $\cal PT$-symmetric phase is a sub-exponential behavior and does not outperform a single gain waveguide. The transverse flux, on the other hand, reveals that the apparent power oscillations between the gain and loss waveguides in the $\cal PT$-symmetric phase can be deceiving in certain cases, where the transverse power transfer is in fact unidirectional. We also show that this power transfer cannot be arbitrarily fast even when the exceptional point is approached. Finally, we go beyond the coupled-mode theory by using the paraxial wave equation and also extend our discussions to a $\cal PT$ diamond and a one-dimensional periodic lattice.
