Superconductivity in the cobalt-doped V3Si A15 intermetallic compound

The A15 structure of superconductors is a prototypical type-II superconductor that has generated considerable interest since the early history of superconducting materials. This paper discusses the superconducting properties of previously unreported V3-xCoxSi alloys. It is found that the lattice parameter decreases with increasing cobalt-doped content and leads to an increased residual resistivity ratio (RRR) value of the V3-xCoxSi system. Meanwhile, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) cobalt-doped content. Furthermore, the fitted data show that the increase of cobalt-doped content also reduces the lower/upper critical fields of the V3-xCoxSi system. Type-II superconductivity is demonstrated on all V3-xCoxSi samples. With higher Co-doped content, V3-xCoxSi alloys may have superconducting and structural phase transitions at low-temperature regions. As the electron/atom (e/a) ratio increases, the Tc variation trend of V3Si is as pronounced as in crystalline alloys and monotonically follows the trend observed for amorphous superconductors.

Superconductivity in the bcc-type High-entropy Alloy TiHfNbTaMo

X-ray powder diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetization, and thermodynamic measurements were conducted to investigate the structure and superconducting properties of TiHfNbTaMo, a novel high-entropy alloy possessing a valence electron count (VEC) of 4.8. The TiHfNbTaMo HEA was discovered to have a body-centered cubic structure and a microscopically homogeneous distribution of the constituent elements. This material shows type-II superconductivity with Tc = 3.42 K, lower critical field with 22.8 mT, and upper critical field with 3.95 T. Low-temperature specific heat measurements show that the alloy is a conventional s-wave type with a moderately coupled superconductor. First-principles calculations show that the density of states (DOS) of the TiHfNbTaMo alloy is dominated by hybrid d orbitals of these five metal elements. Additionally, the TiHfNbTaMo HEA exhibits three van Hove singularities. Furthermore, the VEC and the composition of the elements (especially the Nb elemental content) affect the Tc of the bcc-type HEA.

Superconductivity in the medium-entropy alloy TiVNbTa with a body-centered cubic structure

Here we report the TiVNbTa medium-entropy alloy (MEA) superconductor with the mixed 3d - 5d elements synthesized by an arc-melting method. The TiVNbTa material has a body-centered cubic structure. The superconducting properties of TiVNbTa were studied by resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. The experimental results show that the bulk superconducting phase transition temperature of TiVNbTa is about 4.65 K, and the upper and lower critical fields are 49.3(4) mT and 5.9(5) T, respectively, which indicates TiVNbTa is a type-II superconductor. First-principles calculations show that the d electrons of Ti, V, Nb, and Ta atoms play a significant role near the Fermi level. The results show TiVNbTa is a traditional s-wave superconductor.

Extremely strong coupling s-wave superconductivity in the medium-entropy alloy TiHfNbTa

Here we report a TiHfNbTa bulk medium-entropy alloy (MEA) superconductor crystallized in the body-centered cubic structure, which is synthesized by an arc melting method. Superconducting properties of the TiHfNbTa are studied by employing magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and specific heat measurements. Experimental results show a bulk superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of around 6.75 K. The lower and upper crit-ical fields for TiHfNbTa are 45.8 mT and 10.46 T, respectively. First-principles calculations show that the d electron of Ti, Hf, Nb, and Ta is the main contribution near the Fermi level. Our results indicate that the superconductivity is a conven-tional s-wave type with extremely strong coupling. The extremely strong coupling behavior in the s-wave type TiHfNbTa MEA superconductor is unusual because it generally happens in cuprates, pnictides, and other unconventional superconductors.

Discovery of the high-entropy carbide ceramic topological superconductor candidate (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Hf0.2Ta0.2)C

High-entropy ceramics (HECs) are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with one or more Wyckoff sites shared by equal or near-equal atomic ratios of multi-principal elements. Material design and property tailoring possibilities emerge from this new class of materials. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity around 2.35 K and topological properties in the (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Hf0.2Ta0.2)C high-entropy carbide ceramic (HECC), which has not been observed before in any of the investigated HECC. Density functional theory calculations showed that six type-II Dirac points exist in (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Hf0.2Ta0.2)C, which mainly contributed from the t2g orbitals of transition metals and the p orbitals of C. Due to the stability of the structure, we also observed robust superconductivity under pressure in this HEC superconductor. This study expands the physical properties of HECs, which may become a new material platform for superconductivity research, especially for studying the coupling between superconductivity and topological physics.

Ta4CoSi: a Tantalum-rich superconductor with a honeycomb network structure

The crystal structure of solid-state materials with unique lattices is considered one of the main factors determining physical properties, including superconductivity. Materials with honeycomb lattices have inspired intense research interest for their novel properties. A previously unknown compound, Ta4CoSi, are discussed herein and its crystal structure and superconducting properties. It crystallizes in a CuAl2-type structure (space group P4/mcm, No. 124) with the lattice parameters a = b = 6.17755(7)Å and c = 4.98443(8) Å, featuring honeycomb networks of Ta-Ta in (110) plane. Superconductivity is observed below the critical temperature of 2.45 K, while lower and upper critical magnetic fields are 9.86 mT and 0.84 T, respectively. Experiments and theoretical calculations show that the honeycomb lattices significantly influence the superconducting properties. This material may thus provide a new platform for investigating the exotic superconductivity of honeycomb networks.

Superconducting dome associated with the suppression and re-emergence of charge density wave states upon sulfur substitution in CuIr2Te4 chalcogenides

We report the path from the charge density wave (CDW)-bearing superconductor CuIr2Te4 to the metal insulator transition (MIT)-bearing compound CuIr2S4 by chemical alloying with the gradual substitution of S for Te. The evolution of structural and physical properties of the CuIr2Te4-xSx polycrystalline system with the doping range from 0 to 4 is systemically examined. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results imply CuIr2Te4-xSx in the range between 0 and 0.5 crystallizes in a NiAs defected trigonal structure, whereas it adapts to the cubic spinel structure in the doping range from 3.6 to 4 and it is a mixed phase in the doping range from 0.5 to 3.6. Unexpectedly, the resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal that small-concentration S substitution for Te can suppress the CDW transition, but it reappears around x = 0.2, and the CDW transition temperature enhances clearly as x augments in the range from 0.2 to 0.5. Besides, the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) first increases with S doping content and then decreases after reaching a maximum Tc = 2.82 K for CuIr2Te3.85S0.15. MIT order has been observed in the spinel region from 3.6 to 4 associated with TMI increasing with x increasing. Finally, the rich electronic phase diagram of temperature versus x for this CuIr2Te4-xSx system is assembled, where the superconducting dome is associated with the suppression and re-emergence of CDW as well as MIT states at the end upon sulfur substitution in the CuIr2Te4-xSx chalcogenides.

Negative Chemical Pressure Effect on Superconductivity and Charge Density Wave of Cu0.5Ir1-xZrxTe2

This study demonstrates the design and synthesis of Cu0.5Ir1-xZrxTe2 system by partial substitution of Ir with Zr acting as a negative chemical pressure. With the doping of Zr, the cell parameters significantly expand, signifying an effective negative chemical pressure. The experimental results found evidence that the charge density wave (CDW)-like order is immediately quenched by subtle Zr substitution for Ir and a classical dome-shape Tc(x) that peaked at 2.80 K can be observed. The optimal Cu0.5Ir0.95Zr0.05Te2 compound is a BCS-type superconductor and exhibits type-II SC. However, high Zr concentration can provoke disorder, inducing the reappearance of CDW order. The present study shows that the Cu0.5Ir1-xZrxTe2 system may provide a new platform for further understanding of multiple electronic orders in transition metal dichalcogenides.

Interplay between Charge-Density-Wave, Superconductivity, and Ferromagnetism in CuIr2-xCrxTe4 Chalcogenides

We report the crystal structure, charge-density-wave (CDW), superconductivity (SC), and ferromagnetism (FM) in CuIr2-xCrxTe4 chalcogenides. Powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) results reveal that CuIr2-xCrxTe4 series are distinguished between two structural types and three different regions: (i) layered trigonal structure region, (ii) mixed phase regions, (iii) spinel structure region. Besides, Cr substitution for Ir site results in rich physical properties including the collapse of CDW, the formation of dome-shaped like SC, and the emergence of magnetism. Cr doping slightly elevates the superconducting critical temperature (Tsc) to its highest Tsc = 2.9 K around x = 0.06. As x increases from 0.3 to 0.4, the ferromagnetic Curie temperature (Tc) increases from 175 to 260 K. However, the Tc remains unchanged in the spinel range from 1.9 to 2. This finding provides a comprehensive material platform for investigating the interplay between CDW, SC, and FM multipartite quantum states.

Electron-Electron Interaction and Weak Antilocalization Effect in a Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Superconductor

In disordered transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor, both the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and disorder show remarkable effects on superconductivity. However, the features of SOC and disorder were rarely detected directly. Here we report the quantum transport behaviors arising from the interplay of SOC and disorder in the TMD superconductor 1T-NbSeTe. Before entering the superconducting state, the single crystal at low temperature shows a resistivity upturn, which is T1/2 dependent and insensitive to the applied magnetic fields. The magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures shows a H1/2 dependence at high magnetic fields. The characteristics are in good agreement with the electron-electron interaction (EEI) in a disordered conductor. In addition, the upturn changes and MR at low magnetic fields suggest the contribution of weak antilocalization (WAL) effect arising from the strong SOC in the material. Moreover, the quantitative analyses of the transport features in different samples imply anomalous disorder-enhanced superconductivity that needs to be further understood. The results reveal the disorder enhanced EEI and the strong SOC induced WAL effect in 1T-NbSeTe, which illustrate the resistivity minimum in the widely studied doped superconductors. The work also provides insights into the disorder effect on the superconductivity.

Superconductivity with the enhanced upper critical field in the Pt-Doping CuRh2Se4 spinel

We report the effect of Pt doping on the superconductivity in CuRh2Se4 spinel using a combined experimental and theoretical study. Our XRD results reveal that the Cu(Rh1-xPtx)2Se4 crystallizes in the structure with a space group of Fd3-m (No. 227), and the lattice parameter a increases with Pt doping. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurement results verify that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) forms a dome-like shape with a maximum value of 3.84 K at x = 0.06. It is also observed that the Pt-doping slightly reduces the lower critical magnetic field from 220 Oe in CuRh2Se4 to 168 Oe in Cu(Rh0.94Pt0.06)2Se4, while it significantly enhances the upper critical magnetic field, reaching the maximum of 4.93 T in the Cu(Rh0.94Pt0.06)2Se4 sample. The heat capacity result indicates that the sample Cu(Rh0.91Pt0.09)2Se4 is a bulk superconductor. First-principles calculations suggest that the Pt-doping leads to a red-shift of a density of state peak near the Fermi level, consistent with the dome-like Tc observed experimentally.

Superconductivity in CuIr2-xAlxTe4 telluride chalcogenides

The relationship between charge-density-wave (CDW) and superconductivity (SC), two vital physical phases in condensed matter physics, has always been the focus of scientists' research over the past decades. Motivated by this research hotspot, we systematically studied the physical properties of the layered telluride chalcogenide superconductors CuIr2-xAlxTe4. Through the resistance and magnetization measurements, we found that the CDW order was destroyed by a small amount of Al doping. Meanwhile, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) kept changing with the change of doping amount and rose towards the maximum value of 2.75 K when x = 0.075. The value of normalized specific heat jump for the highest Tc sample CuIr1.925Al0.075Te4 was 1.53, which was larger than the BCS value of 1.43 and showed that bulk superconducting nature. In order to clearly show the relationship between SC and CDW states, we propose a phase diagram of Tc vs. doping content.

Enhanced superconductivity with possible re-appearance of charge density wave states in polycrystalline Cu$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$Ir$_2$Te$_4$ alloys

In this study, we determined the effect of doping with the noble metal Ag on Ir$_2$Te$_4$ superconductors. Based on the resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity, we explored the changes in the superconductivity and charge density wave for Cu$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$Ir$_2$Te$_4$ as a function of isoelectric substitution. We assessed a complete set of competing states from suppressed charge density wave in the low doping region to superconductor in the middle doping region and re-entrant charge density wave in the high doping region, thereby obtaining an electronic phase diagram, where the superconducting dome was near bipartite charge density wave regions with a maximum superconducting temperature Tc of about 2.93 K at an Ag doping level of 12%. The lower H$_{c1}$ and upper H$_{c2}$ critical magnetic fields were determined for some representative samples in the Cu$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$Ir$_2$Te$_4$ series based on magnetization and resistivity measurements, respectively. We showed that H$_{c1}$ decreased whereas H$_{c2}$ increased as the doping content increased. The specific heat anomalies at the superconducting transitions $ΔC_{el}/γT_c$ for representative samples comprising Cu$_{0.92}$Ag$_{0.08}$Ir$_2$Te$_4$, Cu$_{0.88}$Ag$_{0.12}$Ir$_2$Te$_4$, and Cu$_{0.85}$Ag$_{0.15}$Ir$_2$Te$_4$ were approximately 1.40, 1.44, and 1.42, respectively, which are all near the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer value of 1.43 and they indicate bulk superconductivity in these compounds.

Anomalous Charge Density Wave State Evolution and Dome-like Superconductivity in CuIr2Te4-xSex Chalcogenides

We report the anomalous charge density wave (CDW) state evolution and dome-like superconductivity (SC) in CuIr2Te4-xSex series. Room temperature powder X ray-diffraction (PXRD) results indicate that CuIr2Te4-xSex compounds retain the same structure as the host CuIr2Te4 and the unit cell constants a and c manifest a linear decline with increasing Se content. Magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity results suggest that superconducting transition temperature (Tc) exhibits a weak dome-like variation as substituting Te by Se with the maximum Tc = 2.83 K for x = 0.1 followed by suppression in Tc and simultaneous decrease of the superconducting volume fraction. Unexpectedly, the CDW-like transition (TCDW) is suppressed with lower Se doping but re-emerges at higher doping. Meanwhile, the temperature-dependent XRD measurements show that the trigonal structure is stable at 20 K, 100 K and 300 K for the host sample and the doping composition with x = 0.5, thus we propose that the behaviour CDW-like transition arises from the disorder effect created by chemical doping and is not related to structural transition. The lower and the upper critical fields of these compounds are also addressed.

Superconductivity and Charge Density Wave of CuIr2Te4 by Iodine Doping

Here we report a systematic investigation on the evolution of the structural and physical properties, including the charge density wave and superconductivity of the polycrystalline CuIr2Te4-xIx. X-ray diffraction results indicate that both of a and c lattice parameters increase linearly. The resistivity measurements indicate that the charge density wave is destabilized with slight x but reappears when x is large than 0.9. Meanwhile, the superconducting transition temperature enhances as x raises and reaches a maximum value of around 2.95 K for the optimal composition CuIr2Te3.9I0.1 followed by a slight decrease with higher iodine doping content. The specific heat jump for the optimal composition CuIr2Te3.9I0.1 is approximately 1.46, which is close to the Bardeen Cooper Schrieffer value which is 1.43, indicating it is a bulk superconductor. The results of thermodynamic heat capacity measurements under different magnetic fields, magnetization and magneto-transport measurements further suggest that CuIr2Te4-xIx bulks are type II superconductors. Finally, an electronic phase diagram for this CuIr2Te4-xIx system has been constructed. The present study provides a suitable material platform for further investigation of the interplay of the CDW and superconductivity.

Influence of Ln elements (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) on the structure and oxygen permeability of Ca-containing dual-phase membranes

Developing good performance and low-cost oxygen permeable membranes for CO2 capture based on the oxy-fuel concept is greatly desirable but challenging. Despite tremendous efforts in exploring new CO2-stable dual-phase membranes, its presence is however still far from meeting the industrial requirements. Here we report a series of new Ca-containing CO2-resistant oxygen transporting membranes with composition 60wt.%Ce0.9Ln0.1O2-40wt.%Ln0.6Ca0.4FeO3(CLnO-LnCFO; Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) synthesized via a Pechini one-pot method. Our results indicate all investigated compounds are composed of perovskite and fluorite phases, while the perovskite phases in the CNO-NCFO and CSO-SCFO membranes after sintering generates Ca-rich and Ca-less two kinds of grains with different morphologies, where the Ca-less small perovskite grains block the transport of oxygen ions and eventually result in poor oxygen permeability. Among our investigated CLnO-LnCFO membranes, CPO-PCFO exhibits the highest oxygen permeability and excellent CO2 stability, which were mainly associated with the improvement in crystal symmetry, non-negligible electronic conductivity of fluorite phase and the enhancement in electronic conductivity of perovskite. Our results establish Ca-containing oxides as candidate material platforms for membrane engineering devices that combine CO2 capture and oxygen separation.

Charge density wave and superconductivity in the family of telluride chalcogenides Zn1-xCuxIr2-yN(N = Al, Ti, Rh)yTe4

The interplay between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW)/metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) has long been interested and studied in condensed matter physics. Here we study systematically the charge density wave and superconductivity properties in the solid solutions Zn1-xCuxIr2-yN(N = Al, Ti, Rh)yTe4. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements indicate that the CDW state was suppressed immediately while the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) differs from each system. In the Al- and Ti-substitution cases, Tc increase as y increases and reaches a maximum around 2.75 K and 2.84 K respectively at y = 0.075, followed by a decrease of Tc before the chemical phase boundary is reached at y = 0.2. Nevertheless, Tc decreases monotonously with Rh-doping content y increases and disappears above 0.3 with measuring temperature down to 2 K. Surprisingly, in the Zn1-xCuxIr2Te4 solid solution, Tc enhances as x increases and reaches a maximum value of 2.82 K for x = 0.5 but subsequently survives over the whole doping range of 0.00 - 0.9 despite Tc changes slightly with higher doping content, which differs from the observation of zinc doping suppressing the superconductivity quickly in the high Tc cuprate superconductors. The specific heat anomaly at the superconducting transitions for the representative optimal doping samples are all slightly higher than the BCS value of 1.43 and indicate bulk superconductivity in these compounds. Finally, the CDW transition temperature (TCDW) and superconducting transition temperature (Tc) vs. x/y content phase diagrams of Zn1-xCuxIr2-yN(N = Al, Ti, Rh)yTe4 have been established and compared, which offers good opportunity to study the competition between CDW and superconductivity in the telluride chalcogenides.

Superconductivity in the Ru-Doped CuIr2Te4 Telluride Chalcogenide

Here we report the effect of structural and superconductivity properties on Ru doped CuIr2Te4 telluride chalcogenide. XRD results suggest that the CuIr2-xRuxTe4 maintain the disordered trigonal structure with space group P3m1 (No. 164) for x less than 0.3. The lattice constants, a and c, both decrease with increasing Ru content. Temperature-dependent resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat measurements are performed to characterize the superconducting properties systematically. Our results suggest that the optimal doping level for superconductivity in CuIr2-xRuxTe4 is x = 0.05, where Tc is 2.79 K with the Sommerfeld constant gamma of 11.52 mJ mol-1 K-2 and the specific-heat anomaly at the superconducting transition, is approximately 1.51, which is higher than the BCS value of 1.43, indicating CuIr1.95Ru0.05Te4 is a strongly electron-phonon coupled superconductor. The values of lower critical filed and upper critical field calculated from isothermal magnetization and magneto-transport measurements are 0.98 KOe and 2.47 KOe respectively, signifying that the compound is clearly a type-II superconductor. Finally, a dome-like shape superconducting Tcs vs. x content phase diagram is established, where the charge density wave disappears at x = 0.03 while superconducting transition temperature (Tc) rises until it reaches its peak at x = 0.05, then, with decreasing when x reaches 0.3. This feature of the competition between CDW and the superconductivity could be caused by tuning the Fermi surface and density of states with Ru chemical doping.
