A Kunz-type characterization of regular rings via alterations

We prove that a local domain $R$, essentially of finite type over a field, is regular if and only if for every regular alteration $π: X \to Spec R$, we have that $R π_* \mathcal{O}_X$ has finite (equivalently zero in characteristic zero) projective dimension.

Lech's inequality, the Stückrad--Vogel conjecture, and uniform behavior of Koszul homology

Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring, and let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module of dimension $d$. We prove that the set $\left\{\frac{l(M/IM)}{e(I, M)} \right\}_{\sqrt{I}=\mathfrak{m}}$ is bounded below by ${1}/{d!e(\overline{R})}$ where $\overline{R}=R/Ann(M)$. Moreover, when $\widehat{M}$ is equidimensional, this set is bounded above by a finite constant depending only on $M$. The lower bound extends a classical inequality of Lech, and the upper bound answers a question of Stückrad--Vogel in the affirmative. As an application, we obtain results on uniform behavior of the lengths of Koszul homology modules.

Cohomologically full rings

Inspired by a question raised by Eisenbud-Mustaţă-Stillman regarding the injectivity of maps from ${\rm Ext}$ modules to local cohomology modules and the work by the third author with Pham, we introduce a class of rings which we call cohomologically full rings. This class of rings include many well-known singularities: Cohen-Macaulay rings, Stanley-Reisner rings, F-pure rings in positive characteristics, Du Bois singularities in characteristics $0$. We prove many basic properties of cohomologically full rings, including their behavior under flat base change. We show that ideals defining these rings satisfy many desirable properties, in particular they have small cohomological and projective dimension. When $R$ is a standard graded algebra over a field of characteristic $0$, we show under certain conditions that being cohomologically full is equivalent to the intermediate local cohomology modules being generated in degree $0$. Furthermore, we obtain Kodaira-type vanishing and strong bounds on the regularity of cohomologically full graded algebras.

Extended plus closure in complete local rings

The (full) extended plus closure was developed as a replacement for tight closure in mixed characteristic rings. Here it is shown by adapting André's perfectoid algebra techniques that, for complete local rings that have F-finite residue fields, this closure has the colon-capturing property. In fact, more generally, if $R$ is a (possibly ramified) complete regular local ring of mixed characteristic that have F-finite residue fields, $I$ and $J$ are ideals of $R$, and the local domain $S$ is a finite $R$-module, then $(IS:J)\subseteq (I:J)S^{epf}$. A consequence is that all ideals in regular local rings are closed, a fact which implies the validity of the direct summand conjecture and the Briançon-Skoda theorem in mixed characteristic.

$F$-signature under birational morphisms

We study $F$-signature under proper birational morphisms $π: Y \to X$, showing that $F$-signature strictly increases for small morphisms or if $ K_Y \geq π^*K_X$. In certain cases, we can even show that the $F$-signature of $Y$ is at least twice as that of $X$. We also provide examples of $F$-signature dropping and Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity increasing under birational maps without these hypotheses.

Regular rings and perfect(oid) algebras

We prove a $p$-adic analog of Kunz's theorem: a $p$-adically complete noetherian ring is regular exactly when it admits a faithfully flat map to a perfectoid ring. This result is deduced from a more precise statement on detecting finiteness of projective dimension of finitely generated modules over noetherian rings via maps to perfectoid rings. We also establish a version of the $p$-adic Kunz's theorem where the flatness hypothesis is relaxed to almost flatness.

Perfectoid multiplier/test ideals in regular rings and bounds on symbolic powers

Using perfectoid algebras, we introduce a mixed characteristic analog of the multiplier ideal, respectively test ideal, from characteristic zero, respectively $p > 0$, in the case of a regular ambient ring. We prove several properties about this ideal such as subadditivity. We then use these techniques to derive a uniform bound on the growth of symbolic powers of radical ideals in all excellent regular rings. The analogous result was shown in equal characteristic by Ein-Lazarsfeld-Smith and Hochster-Huneke.

$F$-singularities under generic linkage

Let $R=k[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a prefect field of positive characteristic. Let $I$ be an unmixed ideal in $R$ and let $J$ be a generic link of $I$ in $S=R[u_{ij}]_{c \times r}$. We describe the parameter test submodule of $S/J$ in terms of the test ideal of the pair $(R, I)$ when a reduction of $I$ is a complete intersection or almost complete intersection. As an application, we deduce a criterion for when $S/J$ has $F$-rational singularities in these cases. We also compare the $F$-pure threshold of $(R, I)$ and $(S, J)$.

Big Cohen-Macaulay algebras and the vanishing conjecture for maps of Tor in mixed characteristic

We prove a version of weakly functorial big Cohen-Macaulay algebras that suffices to establish Hochster-Huneke's vanishing conjecture for maps of Tor in mixed characteristic. As a corollary, we prove an analog of Boutot's theorem that direct summands of regular rings are pseudo-rational in mixed characteristic. Our proof uses perfectoid spaces and is inspired by the recent breakthroughs on the direct summand conjecture by André and Bhatt.

Maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over certain Segre products

We prove some results on the non-existence of rank one maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over certain Segre product rings. As an application we show that over these Segre product rings there do not exist maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules with multiplicity less than or equal to the parameter degree of the ring, which disproves a conjecture of Schoutens.

Lech's conjecture in dimension three

Let $(R,m)\to (S,n)$ be a flat local extension of local rings. Lech conjectured in 1960 that there should be a general inequality $e(R)\leq e(S)$ on the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicities. This conjecture is known when the base ring $R$ has dimension less than or equal to two, and remains open in higher dimensions. In this paper, we prove Lech's conjecture in dimension three when $R$ has equal characteristic. In higher dimension, our method yields substantial partial estimate: $e(R)\leq (d!/2^d)\cdot e(S)$ where $d=\dim R\geq 4$, in equal characteristic.

On the Individual Surrogate Paradox

When the primary outcome is difficult to collect, surrogate endpoint is typically used as a substitute. It is possible that for every individual, treatment has a positive effect on surrogate, and surrogate has a positive effect on primary outcome, but for some individuals, treatment has a negative effect on primary outcome. For example, a treatment may be substantially effective in preventing the stroke for everyone, and lowering the risk of stroke is universally beneficial for a longer survival time, however, the treatment may still cause death for some individuals. We define such paradoxical phenomenon as individual surrogate paradox. The individual surrogate paradox is preposed to capture the treatment effect heterogeneity, which is unable to be described by either the surrogate paradox based on average causal effect (ACE) (Chen et al., 2007) or that based on distributional causal effect (DCE) (Ju and Geng, 2010). We investigate existing surrogate criteria in terms of whether the individual surrogate paradox could manifest. We find that only the strong binary surrogate can avoid such paradox without additional assumptions. Utilizing the sharp bounds, we propose novel criteria to exclude the individual surrogate paradox. Our methods are illustrated in an application to determine the effect of the intensive glycemia on the risk of development or progression of diabetic retinopathy.

The dualizing complex of $F$-injective and Du Bois singularities

Let $(R,m,k)$ be an excellent local ring of equal characteristic. Let $j$ be a positive integer such that $H_m^i(R)$ has finite length for every $0\leq i 0$ or Du Bois in characteristic $0$, then the truncated dualizing complex $τ_{>-j}ω_R^\bullet$ is quasi-isomorphic to a complex of $k$-vector spaces. As a consequence, $F$-injective or Du Bois singularities with isolated non-Cohen-Macaulay locus are Buchsbaum. Moreover, when $R$ has $F$-rational or rational singularities on the punctured spectrum, we obtain stronger results.

Frobenius actions on local cohomology modules and deformation

Let $(R,m)$ be a Noetherian local ring of characteristic $p>0$. We introduce and study $F$-full and $F$-anti-nilpotent singularities, both are defined in terms of the Frobenius actions on the local cohomology modules of $R$ supported at the maximal ideal. We prove that if $R/(x)$ is $F$-full or $F$-anti-nilpotent for a nonzerodivisor $x\in R$, then so is $R$. We use these results to obtain new cases on the deformation of $F$-injectivity.

$D$-module and $F$-module length of local cohomology modules

Let $R$ be a polynomial or power series ring over a field $k$. We study the length of local cohomology modules $H^j_I(R)$ in the category of $D$-modules and $F$-modules. We show that the $D$-module length of $H^j_I(R)$ is bounded by a polynomial in the degree of the generators of $I$. In characteristic $p>0$ we obtain upper and lower bounds on the $F$-module length in terms of the dimensions of Frobenius stable parts and the number of special primes of local cohomology modules of $R/I$. The obtained upper bound is sharp if $R/I$ is an isolated singularity, and the lower bound is sharp when $R/I$ is Gorenstein and $F$-pure. We also give an example of a local cohomology module that has different $D$-module and $F$-module lengths.

Local cohomology of Du Bois singularities and applications to families

In this paper we study the local cohomology modules of Du Bois singularities. Let $(R,m)$ be a local ring, we prove that if $R_{red}$ is Du Bois, then $H_m^i(R)\to H_m^i(R_{red})$ is surjective for every $i$. We find many applications of this result. For example we answer a question of Kovács and the second author on the Cohen-Macaulay property of Du Bois singularities. We obtain results on the injectivity of $Ext$ that provide substantial partial answers of questions of Eisenbud-Mustata-Stillman in characteristic $0$, and these results can be viewed as generalizations of the Kodaira vanishing theorem for Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois varieties. We prove results on the set-theoretic Cohen-Macaulayness of the defining ideal of Du Bois singularities, which are characteristic $0$ analog of results of Singh-Walther and answer some of their questions. We extend results of Hochster-Roberts on the relation between Koszul cohomology and local cohomology for $F$-injective and Du Bois singularities, see Hochster-Roberts. We also prove that singularities of dense $F$-injective type deform.

Eulerian graded $D$-modules

Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field $K$ of arbitrary characteristic and $D$ be the ring of differential operators over $R$. Inspired by Euler formula for homogeneous polynomials, we introduce a class of graded $D$-modules, called Eulerian graded $D$-modules. It is proved that a vast class of $D$-modules, including all composite of local cohomology modules, $H_{J_0}^{i_0}(H_{J_1}^{i_1}...(H_{J_n}^{i_n}(R)))$ where $J_1,...,J_n$ are homogeneous ideals of $R$, are Eulerian graded. As an application of our theory, we prove that in all characteristic, these composite of local cohomology modules must be isomorphic to a direct sum of $^{*}E(n)$, the graded injective hull of $R/m$ shifted by $n$. This answers a question raised in arXiv:1102.5336. An application of our theory of Eulerian graded $D$-modules to the graded injective hull of $R/P$, where $P$ is a homogeneous prime ideal of $R$, is discussed as well.

The vanishing conjecture for maps of Tor and derived splinters

We say an excellent local domain $(S,n)$ satisfies the vanishing conditions for maps of Tor, if for every $A\to R\to S$ with $A$ regular and $A\to R$ module-finite torsion-free extension, and every $A$-module $M$, the map $Tor^A_i(M, R)\to Tor_i^A(M, S)$ vanishes for every $i\geq 1$. Hochster-Huneke's conjecture (theorem in equal characteristic) thus states that regular rings satisfy such vanishing conditions. The main theorem of this paper shows that, in equal characteristic, rings that satisfy the vanishing conditions for maps of Tor are exactly derived splinters in the sense of Bhatt. In particular, rational singularities in characteristic $0$ satisfy the vanishing conditions. This greatly generalizes Hochster-Huneke's result and Boutot's theorem. Moreover, this leads to a new (and surprising) characterization of rational singularities in terms of splittings in module-finite extensions.
