Delay Analysis of Wireless Federated Learning Based on Saddle Point Approximation and Large Deviation Theory

Federated learning (FL) is a collaborative machine learning paradigm, which enables deep learning model training over a large volume of decentralized data residing in mobile devices without accessing clients' private data. Driven by the ever increasing demand for model training of mobile applications or devices, a vast majority of FL tasks are implemented over wireless fading channels. Due to the time-varying nature of wireless channels, however, random delay occurs in both the uplink and downlink transmissions of FL. How to analyze the overall time consumption of a wireless FL task, or more specifically, a FL's delay distribution, becomes a challenging but important open problem, especially for delay-sensitive model training. In this paper, we present a unified framework to calculate the approximate delay distributions of FL over arbitrary fading channels. Specifically, saddle point approximation, extreme value theory (EVT), and large deviation theory (LDT) are jointly exploited to find the approximate delay distribution along with its tail distribution, which characterizes the quality-of-service of a wireless FL system. Simulation results will demonstrate that our approximation method achieves a small approximation error, which vanishes with the increase of training accuracy.

Detection of NaRb Feshbach molecule by photodissociation

We demonstrate detection of NaRb Feshbach molecules at high magnetic field by combining molecular photodissociation and absorption imaging of the photofragments. The photodissociation process is carried out via a spectroscopically selected hyperfine Zeeman level correlated with the Na ($3P_{3/2}$) + Rb ($5S_{1/2}$) asymptote which, following spontaneous emission and optical pumping, leads to ground-state atoms in a single level with near unity probability. Subsequent to the dissociation, the number of molecules is obtained by detecting the resultant $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms. We have also studied the heating effect caused by the photodissociation process and optimized the detection protocol for extracting the temperature of the molecular cloud. This method enables the $in~situ$ detection of fast time scale collision dynamics between NaRb Feshbach molecules and will be a valuable capability in studying few-body physics involving molecules.

Manipulation of heteronuclear spin dynamics with microwave and vector light shift

We report the observation and manipulation of heteronuclear spin dynamics in a spin-1 mixture of ultracold $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na atoms. The dynamics is driven by the interspecies spin-dependent interaction and shows a pronounced dependence on magnetic fields with influences from both linear and quadratic Zeeman shifts. Similar to the well-studied homonuclear cases, the interspecies spin dynamics can be controlled by tuning the quadratic Zeeman shift with far-detuned microwave fields. In addition, we successfully realize spin dynamics control with vector light shifts which act as a species-selective effective magnetic field on $^{87}$Rb atoms. Both methods show negligible loss of atoms thus will be powerful techniques for investigating spin dynamics with fast temporal and high spatial resolutions.
