Supersymmetric Proca-Yang-Mills System

We determine the off-shell N=1 supersymmetry transformation rules for a tensor-Yang-Mills system in which the tensor field transforms in a nontrivial representation of the Yang-Mills group, and there is an additional vector multiplet in the same representation. We then show that this system describes a massive tensor multiplet coupled to Yang-Mills in which the additional vector multiplet is eaten by the tensor field. Next, we construct an action which consists of four separately off-shell supersymmetric pieces and find that integrating out the auxiliary fields gives rise to an infinite number of higher order couplings of the scalar field belonging to the tensor multiplet. We describe the dualization of the massive tensor to a massive vector, thereby ending up with an on-shell supersymmetric nonabelian massive vector multiplet coupled to an off-shell Yang-Mills multiplet which we refer to as the supersymmetric Proca-Yang-Mills system. This description of massive vectors is contrasted with the standard one obtained through the Higgs mechanism.

Classical and quantum integrability in AdS(2)/CFT(1)

We investigate the type IIA string on AdS(2)xS(2)xT(6) supported by RR-flux which describes the gravitational side of the AdS(2)/CFT(1) correspondence. While the four-dimensional part AdS(2)xS(2) can be realized as a supercoset, the full superstring has both coset and non-coset excitations, the latter giving rise to massless worldsheet modes, a somewhat novel feature in AdS/CFT. The string is nevertheless known to be integrable at the classical level. In this paper we perform several computations checking aspects of both classical and quantum string integrability. At the classical level we compute energies for the near BMN string and successfully match these against Bethe ansatz predictions. Furthermore, integrability dictates a magnon dispersion relation which we compare with the poles of loop corrected propagators, at both the one and two-loop level. At one loop, where only tadpole diagrams contribute, we find that the bosonic and fermionic contributions sum up to zero. Under the assumption of worldsheet supersymmetry, we then compute the two-loop sunset diagram in the near flat space limit. As in AdS(5)xS(5) we find that the result fits nicely into the sine-square structure of the dispersion relation.

Near BMN dynamics of the AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) superstring

We investigate the type IIA AdS(3) x S(3) x M(4) superstring with M(4)=S(3) x S(1) or M(4)=T(4). String theory in this background is interesting because of AdS3/CFT2 and its newly discovered integrable structures. We derive the kappa symmetry gauge-fixed Green-Schwarz string action to quadratic order in fermions and quartic order in fields utilizing a near BMN expansion. As a first consistency check of our results we show that the two point functions are one-loop finite in dimensional regularization. We then perform a Hamiltonian analysis where we compare the energy of string states with the predictions of a set of conjectured Bethe equations. While we find perfect agreement for single rank one sectors, we find that the product SU(2) x SU(2) sector does not match unless the Bethe equations decouple completely. We then calculate 2 to 2 bosonic tree-level scattering processes on the string worldsheet and show that the two-dimensional S-matrix is reflectionless. This might be important due to the presence of massless worldsheet excitations which are generally not described by the Bethe equations.

Classical integrability and quantum aspects of the AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) superstring

In this paper we continue the investigation of aspects of integrability of the type IIA AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) and AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) superstrings. By constructing a one parameter family of flat connections we prove that the Green-Schwarz string is classically integrable, at least to quadratic order in fermions, without fixing the kappa-symmetry. We then compare the quantum dispersion relation, fixed by integrability up to an unknown interpolating function h(lambda), to explicit one-loop calculations on the string worldsheet. For AdS(3) x S(3) x S(3) x S(1) the spectrum contains heavy, as well as light and massless modes, and we find that the one-loop contribution differs depending on how we treat these modes showing that similar regularization ambiguities as appeared in AdS(4)/CFT(3) occur also here.

More on integrable structures of superstrings in AdS(4) x CP(3) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) superbackgrounds

In this paper we continue the study, initiated in arXiv:1009.3498 and arXiv:1104.1793, of the classical integrability of Green-Schwarz superstrings in AdS(4) x CP(3) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) superbackgrounds whose spectrum contains non-supercoset worldsheet degrees of freedom corresponding to broken supersymmetries in the bulk. We derive an explicit expression, to all orders in the coset fermions and to second order in the non-coset fermions, which extends the supercoset Lax connection in these backgrounds with terms depending on the non-coset fermions. An important property of the obtained form of the Lax connection is that it is invariant under Z_4-transformations of the superisometry generators and the spectral parameter. This demonstrates that the contribution of the non-coset fermions does not spoil the Z_4-symmetry of the super-coset Lax connection which is of crucial importance for the application of Bethe-ansatz techniques. The expressions describing the AdS(4) x CP(3) and AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) superstring sigma--models and their Lax connections have a very similar form. This is because their amount of target-space supersymmetries complement each other to 32=24+8, the maximal number of 10d type II supersymmetries. As a byproduct, this similarity has allowed us to obtain the form of the geometry of the complete type IIA AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6) superspace to all orders in the coset fermions and to the second order in the non-coset ones.

Peculiarities of String Theory on AdS(4) x CP(3)

We review peculiar features of type IIA string theory compactified on AdS(4) x CP(3) superspace, in particular, the structure of the Green-Schwarz action, issues with fixing its kappa-symmetry, classical integrability and the string instanton on CP(3)

Evidence for the classical integrability of the complete AdS(4) x CP(3) superstring

We construct a zero-curvature Lax connection in a sub-sector of the superstring theory on AdS(4) x CP(3) which is not described by the OSp(6|4)/U(3) x SO(1,3) supercoset sigma-model. In this sub-sector worldsheet fermions associated to eight broken supersymmetries of the type IIA background are physical fields. As such, the prescription for the construction of the Lax connection based on the Z_4-automorphism of the isometry superalgebra OSp(6|4) does not do the job. So, to construct the Lax connection we have used an alternative method which nevertheless relies on the isometry of the target superspace and kappa-symmetry of the Green-Schwarz superstring.

String instanton in AdS(4)xCP(3)

We study the string instanton wrapping a non-trivial two-cycle in CP(3) of the type IIA string theory compactified on AdS_4 x CP(3) superspace and find that it has twelve fermionic zero modes associated with 1/2 of the supersymmetry of the background thus manifesting that this classical instanton configuration is 1/2 BPS

Simplifying superstring and D-brane actions in AdS(4) x CP(3) superbackground

By making an appropriate choice for gauge fixing kappa-symmetry we obtain a relatively simple form of the actions for a D=11 superparticle in AdS(4) x S(7)/Z_k, and for a D0-brane, fundamental string and D2-branes in the AdS(4) x CP(3) superbackground. They can be used to study various problems of string theory and the AdS4/CFT3 correspondence, especially in regions of the theory which are not reachable by the OSp(6|4)/U(3) x SO(1,3) supercoset sigma-model. In particular, we present a simple form of the gauge-fixed superstring action in AdS(4) x CP(3) and briefly discuss issues of its T-dualization.

The complete AdS(4) x CP(3) superspace for the type IIA superstring and D-branes

We lift the bosonic AdS_4 x CP^3 solution of type IIA supergravity preserving 24 supersymmetries to a D=10 superspace which has 32 Grassmann-odd directions. The type IIA superspace is obtained from D=11 via dimensional reduction of the coset superspace OSp(8|4)/SO(7) x SO(1,3) by realizing the latter as a Hopf fibration over the former. This construction generalizes to superspace the Hopf fibration of S^7 as a U(1) bundle over CP^3, and is suitable for writing the explicit form of Green-Schwarz-type actions encoding the dynamics of the type IIA string and branes in the AdS_4 x CP^3 superbackground. We show that the OSp(6|4)/U(3) x SO(1,3) supercoset string action describes only a subsector of the complete Green-Schwarz superstring. Thus, even though the superstring equations of motion in the OSp(6|4)/U(3) x SO(1,3) subsector are classically integrable, the fact that the full AdS_4 x CP^3 superspace is not a supercoset requires the use of more general methods to determine whether the superstring in the complete AdS_4 x CP^3 superbackground is classically integrable.

Strings, boundary fermions and coincident D-branes

This thesis describes an attempt to write down covariant actions for coincident D-branes using so-called boundary fermions instead of matrices to describe the non-abelian fields. These fermions can be thought of as Chan-Paton degrees of freedom for the open string. It is shown that by gauge-fixing and by suitably quantizing these boundary fermions the non-abelian action that is known, the Myers action, can be reproduced. Furthermore it is shown that under natural assumptions, unlike the Myers action, the action formulated using boundary fermions also posseses kappa-symmetry when formulated on superspace. Another aspect of string theory discussed in this thesis is that of tensionless strings. These are of great interest for example because of their possible relation to higher spin gauge theories via the AdS/CFT-correspondence. The tensionless superstring in a plane wave background, a Penrose limit of the near-horizon geometry of a stack of D3-branes, is considered and compared to the tensile case.

Type IIB tensionless superstrings in a pp-wave background

We solve the tensionless string in a constant plane wave background and obtain a hugely degenerate spectrum. This is the case for a large class of plane wave backgrounds. We show that the solution can also be derived as a consistent limit of the quantized tensile theory of IIB strings in a pp-wave. This is in contrast to the situation for several other backgrounds.
