Spectral pollution in substitution systems

We study spectral properties of Schr\"odinger operators associated with substitution dynamical systems in higher dimensions. Focusing on periodic approximations generated by iterating substitutions on initial configurations, we analyze how structural defects influence the limiting spectral behavior. In contrast to the one-dimensional setting, we show that such approximations may exhibit significant spectral pollution, including changes in the essential spectrum and the Lebesgue measure.

On measure estimates arising from Hausdorff distance convergence

We discuss a method to estimate the measure of a compact set which is approximated using the Hausdorff distance by a sequence of compact sets. We do this by considering corresponding fattenings of the sequence of compact sets and showing their measures converge. We further review applications of this result to study the measure of a spectrum of an operator which has a sequence of periodic approximations.

Spectral approximation for substitution systems

We study periodic approximations of aperiodic Schr\"odinger operators on lattices in Lie groups with dilation structure. The potentials arise through symbolic substitution systems that have been recently introduced in this setting. We characterize convergence of spectra of associated Schr\"odinger operators in the Hausdorff distance via properties of finite graphs. As a consequence, new examples of periodic approximations are obtained. We further prove that there are substitution systems that do not admit periodic approximations in higher dimensions, in contrast to the one-dimensional case. On the other hand, if the spectra converge, then we show that the rate of convergence is necessarily exponentially fast. These results are new even for substitutions over $\mathbb{Z}^d$.

Approximations of symbolic substitution systems in one dimension

Periodic approximations of quasicrystals are a powerful tool in analyzing spectra of Schr\"odinger operators arising from quasicrystals, given the known theory for periodic crystals. Namely, we seek periodic operators whose spectra approximate the spectrum of the limiting operator (of the quasicrystal). This naturally leads to study the convergence of the underlying dynamical systems. We treat dynamical systems which are based on one-dimensional substitutions. We first find natural candidates of dynamical subsystems to approximate the substitution dynamical system. Subsequently, we offer a characterization of their convergence and provide estimates for the rate of convergence. We apply the proposed theory to some guiding examples.

Simplicial spanning trees in random Steiner complexes

A spanning tree $T$ in a graph $G$ is a sub-graph of $G$ with the same vertex set as $G$ which is a tree. In 1981, McKay proved an asymptotic result regarding the number of spanning trees in random $k$-regular graphs. In this paper we prove a high-dimensional generalization of McKay's result for random $d$-dimensional, $k$-regular simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices, showing that the weighted number of simplicial spanning trees is of order $(\xi_{d,k}+o(1))^{\binom{n}{d}}$ as $n\to\infty$, where $\xi_{d,k}$ is an explicit constant, provided $k> 4d^2+d+2$. A key ingredient in our proof is the local convergence of such random complexes to the $d$-dimensional, $k$-regular arboreal complex, which allows us to generalize McKay's result regarding the Kesten-McKay distribution.
