Robust Decoding from 1-Bit Compressive Sampling with Least Squares

In 1-bit compressive sensing (1-bit CS) where target signal is coded into a binary measurement, one goal is to recover the signal from noisy and quantized samples. Mathematically, the 1-bit CS model reads: $y = η\odot\textrm{sign} (Ψx^* + ε)$, where $x^{*}\in \mathcal{R}^{n}, y\in \mathcal{R}^{m}$, $Ψ\in \mathcal{R}^{m\times n}$, and $ε$ is the random error before quantization and $η\in \mathcal{R}^{n}$ is a random vector modeling the sign flips. Due to the presence of nonlinearity, noise and sign flips, it is quite challenging to decode from the 1-bit CS. In this paper, we consider least squares approach under the over-determined and under-determined settings. For $m>n$, we show that, up to a constant $c$, with high probability, the least squares solution $x_{\textrm{ls}}$ approximates $ x^*$ with precision $δ$ as long as $m \geq\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}(\frac{n}{δ^2})$. For $m< n$, we prove that, up to a constant $c$, with high probability, the $\ell_1$-regularized least-squares solution $x_{\ell_1}$ lies in the ball with center $x^*$ and radius $δ$ provided that $m \geq \mathcal{O}( \frac{s\log n}{δ^2})$ and $\|x^*\|_0 := s < m$. We introduce a Newton type method, the so-called primal and dual active set (PDAS) algorithm, to solve the nonsmooth optimization problem. The PDAS possesses the property of one-step convergence. It only requires to solve a small least squares problem on the active set. Therefore, the PDAS is extremely efficient for recovering sparse signals through continuation. We propose a novel regularization parameter selection rule which does not introduce any extra computational overhead. Extensive numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the robustness of our proposed model and the efficiency of our algorithm.

Classification of certain qualitative properties of solutions for the quasilinear parabolic equations

In this paper, we mainly consider the initial boundary problem for a quasilinear parabolic equation \[ u_t-\mathrm{div}\left(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u\right)=-|u|^{β-1}u+α|u|^{q-2}u, \] where $p>1,β>0$, $q\geq1$ and $α>0$. By using Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality, energy method and comparison principle, the phenomena of blowup and extinction are classified completely in the different ranges of reaction exponents.

Penalized Maximum Likelihood Estimator for Skew Normal Mixtures

Skew normal mixture models provide a more flexible framework than the popular normal mixtures for modelling heterogeneous data with asymmetric behaviors. Due to the unboundedness of likelihood function and the divergency of shape parameters, the maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters of interest are often not well defined, leading to dissatisfactory inferential process. We put forward a proposal to deal with these issues simultaneously in the context of penalizing the likelihood function. The resulting penalized maximum likelihood estimator is proved to be strongly consistent when the putative order of mixture is equal to or larger than the true one. We also provide penalized EM-type algorithms to compute penalized estimators. Finite sample performances are examined by simulations and real data applications and the comparison to the existing methods.

Nuclear charge distribution in the spontaneous fission of 252Cf

The measurement for charge distributions of fragments in 252Cf has been performed by using a unique style of detector setup consisting of a typical grid ionization chamber and a dE-E particle telescope. We found that the fragment mass dependency of the average width of the charge distribution shows a systematic decreased trend with the obvious odd-even effect. The variation of widths of charge distribution with kinetic energies shows an approximate V-shape curve due to the large number of neutron emission for the high excitation energies and cold fragmentation with low excitation energies. As for the behavior of the average nuclear charge with respect to its deviation ΔZ from the unchanged charge distribution (UCD) as a function of the mass number of primary fragments A*, for asymmetric fission products ΔZ is negative value, while upon approaching mass symmetry ΔZ turns positive. Concerning the energy dependence of the most probable charge for given primary mass number A*, the obvious increasing tendencies for with the kinetic energies are observed. The correlation between the average nuclear charge and the primary mass number is given as linear function. The proton and neutron odd-even effects with light fragment kinetic energies are derived.

Correlations of neutron multiplicity and gamma multiplicity with fragment mass and total kinetic energy in spontaneous fission of 252Cf

The dependence of correlations of neutron multiplicity ν and gamma-ray multiplicity Mg in spontaneous fission of 252Cf on fragment mass A* and total kinetic energy TKE has been investigated employing the ratio of Mg/ν and the form of Mg(ν). We show for the first time that Mg and ν have a complex correlation for heavy fragment masses, while there is a positive dependence of Mg(ν) for light fragment masses and for near-symmetric mass splits. The ratio Mg/ν exhibits strong shell effects for the neutron magic number N = 50 and near the doubly magic number shell closure at Z = 50 and N = 82. The gamma-ray multiplicity Mg has a maximum for TKE = 165-170 MeV. Above 170 MeV Mg(TKE) is approximately linear, while it deviates significantly from a linear dependence at lower TKE. The correlation between the average neutron and gamma-ray multiplicities can be partly reproduced by model calculations.

Efficient estimation in sufficient dimension reduction

We develop an efficient estimation procedure for identifying and estimating the central subspace. Using a new way of parameterization, we convert the problem of identifying the central subspace to the problem of estimating a finite dimensional parameter in a semiparametric model. This conversion allows us to derive an efficient estimator which reaches the optimal semiparametric efficiency bound. The resulting efficient estimator can exhaustively estimate the central subspace without imposing any distributional assumptions. Our proposed efficient estimation also provides a possibility for making inference of parameters that uniquely identify the central subspace. We conduct simulation studies and a real data analysis to demonstrate the finite sample performance in comparison with several existing methods.

Feature Screening via Distance Correlation Learning

This paper is concerned with screening features in ultrahigh dimensional data analysis, which has become increasingly important in diverse scientific fields. We develop a sure independence screening procedure based on the distance correlation (DC-SIS, for short). The DC-SIS can be implemented as easily as the sure independence screening procedure based on the Pearson correlation (SIS, for short) proposed by Fan and Lv (2008). However, the DC-SIS can significantly improve the SIS. Fan and Lv (2008) established the sure screening property for the SIS based on linear models, but the sure screening property is valid for the DC-SIS under more general settings including linear models. Furthermore, the implementation of the DC-SIS does not require model specification (e.g., linear model or generalized linear model) for responses or predictors. This is a very appealing property in ultrahigh dimensional data analysis. Moreover, the DC-SIS can be used directly to screen grouped predictor variables and for multivariate response variables. We establish the sure screening property for the DC-SIS, and conduct simulations to examine its finite sample performance. Numerical comparison indicates that the DC-SIS performs much better than the SIS in various models. We also illustrate the DC-SIS through a real data example.
