Review of AdS/CFT Integrability: An Overview

This is the introductory chapter of a review collection on integrability in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the collection we present an overview of the achievements and the status of this subject as of the year 2010.

Generalised scaling at subleading order

We study operators in the sl(2) sector of N=4 SYM in the generalised scaling limit, where the spin is large and the length of the operator scales with the logarithm of the spin. At leading order in the large spin expansion the scaling dimension at strong coupling is given in terms of the free energy of the O(6) model. We investigate the first subleading corrections to the scaling dimension and find that these too can be derived from the O(6) model in the strong coupling limit.

Review of AdS/CFT Integrability, Chapter III.4: Twist states and the cusp anomalous dimension

We review the computation of the anomalous dimension of twist operators in the planar limit of N=4 SYM using the asymptotic Bethe ansatz and demonstrate how this quantity is obtained at weak, strong and intermediate values of the coupling constant. The anomalous dimension of twist operators in the limit of large Lorentz spin played a major role in the construction as well as in many tests of the asymptotic Bethe equations, this aspect of the story is emphasised.

From weak coupling to spinning strings

We identify the gauge theory dual of a spinning string of minimal energy with spins S_1, S_2 on AdS_5 and charge J on S^5. For this purpose we focus on a certain set of local operators with two different types of covariant derivatives acting on complex scalar fields. We analyse the corresponding nested Bethe equations for the ground states in the limit of large spins. The auxiliary Bethe roots form certain string configurations in the complex plane, which enable us to derive integral equations for the leading and sub-leading contribution to the anomalous dimension. The results can be expressed through the observables of the sl(2) sub-sector, i.e. the cusp anomaly f(g) and the virtual scaling function B_L(g), rendering the strong-coupling analysis straightforward. Furthermore, we also study a particular sub-class of these operators specialising to a scaling limit with finite values of the second spin at weak and strong coupling.

The virtual scaling function of AdS/CFT

We write an integral equation that incorporates finite corrections to the large spin asymptotics of N=4 SYM twist operators from the non-linear integral equation. We show that these corrections are an all-loop result, not affected by wrapping effects, and agree, after determining the strong coupling expansion, with string theory predictions.

A Generalized Scaling Function for AdS/CFT

We study a refined large spin limit for twist operators in the sl(2) sector of AdS/CFT. We derive a novel non-perturbative equation for the generalized two-parameter scaling function associated to this limit, and analyze it at weak coupling. It is expected to smoothly interpolate between weakly coupled gauge theory and string theory at strong coupling.

A Universality Test of the Quantum String Bethe Ansatz

We show that the quantum corrected string Bethe ansatz passes an important universality test by demonstrating that it correctly incorporates the non-analytical terms in the string sigma model one-loop correction for rational three-spin strings with two out of the three spins identical. Subsequently, we use the quantum corrected string Bethe ansatz to predict the exact form of the non-analytic terms for the generic rational three-spin string.

Rational three-spin string duals and non-anomalous finite size effects

We determine by a one line computation the one-loop conformal dimension and the associated non-anomalous finite size correction for all operators dual to spinning strings of rational type having three angular momenta (J_1,J_2,J_3) on S^5. Finite size corrections are conjectured to encode information about string sigma model loop corrections to the spectrum of type IIB superstrings on AdS_5xS^5. We compare our result to the zero-mode contribution to the leading quantum string correction derived for the stable three-spin string with two out of the three spin labels identical and observe agreement. As a side result we clarify the relation between the Bethe root description of three-spin strings of the type (J,J',J') with respectively J>J' and J<J'.

Bethe ansatz and fluctuations in SU(3) Yang-Mills operators

We consider the scalar operators corresponding to semiclassical string states in AdS_5xS^5 with the three angular momenta in S^5 non-trivial. The string states recieve quantum corrections and we study the corresponding process on the gauge theory side. The anomalous dimension of the scalar operators is computed using the Bethe ansatz and we find the correction that corresponds to the energy of the quantized string. We restrict for simplicity to the case where two of the angular momenta in S^5 are equal.

The Supersymmetric Extension of the Faddeev model

We study the supersymmetric extension of the Faddeev model in four dimensions. The Faddeev model contains three dimensional soliton solutions and we are interested in how these solitons are affected by supersymmetry. We consider both the N=1 and N=2 extensions and find that in neither case it is possible to supersymmetrize the model without adding additional bosonic terms. There are essentially two ways of constructing the supersymmetric theory, one that will lead to a model which allows for solitons and another that gives a model where solitons are excluded. The N=2 model is studied since extending supersymmetry is the natural way of including topological charges in the algebra. A lower bound to the mass is obtained by computing the central charge. The result is that it is possible to have a non-trivial lower bound on the mass, this in principle allows for massive solitons.

Chirality and fermion number in a knotted soliton background

We consider the coupling of a single Dirac fermion to the three component unit vector field which appears as an order parameter in the Faddeev model. Classically, the coupling is determined by requiring that it preserves a certain local frame independence. But quantum mechanically the separate left and right chiral fermion number currents suffer from a frame anomaly. We employ this anomaly to compute the fermion number of a knotted soliton. The result coincides with the self-linking number of the soliton. In particular, the anomaly structure of the fermions relates directly to the inherent chiral properties of the soliton. Our result suggests that interactions between fermions and knotted solitons can lead to phenomena akin the Callan-Rubakov effect.

Field Decomposition and the Ground State Structure of SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory

We compute the effective potential of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory using the background field method and the Faddeev-Niemi decomposition of the gauge fields. In particular, we find that the potential will depend on the values of two scalar fields in the decomposition and that its structure will give rise to a symmetry breaking.

Shafranov's virial theorem and magnetic plasma confinement

Shafranov's virial theorem implies that nontrivial magnetohydrodynamical equilibrium configurations must be supported by externally supplied currents. Here we extend the virial theorem to field theory, where it relates to Derrick's scaling argument on soliton stability. We then employ virial arguments to investigate a realistic field theory model of a two-component plasma, and conclude that stable localized solitons can exist in the bulk of a finite density plasma. These solitons entail a nontrivial electric field which implies that purely magnetohydrodynamical arguments are insufficient for describing stable, nontrivial structures within the bulk of a plasma.
