Twisted Steinberg algebras

We introduce twisted Steinberg algebras over a commutative unital ring $R$. These generalise Steinberg algebras and are a purely algebraic analogue of Renault's twisted groupoid C*-algebras. In particular, for each ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ and each locally constant $2$-cocycle $σ$ on $G$ taking values in the units $R^\times$, we study the algebra $A_R(G,σ)$ consisting of locally constant compactly supported $R$-valued functions on $G$, with convolution and involution "twisted" by $σ$. We also introduce a "discretised" analogue of a twist $Σ$ over a Hausdorff étale groupoid $G$, and we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between locally constant $2$-cocycles on $G$ and discrete twists over $G$ admitting a continuous global section. Given a discrete twist $Σ$ arising from a locally constant $2$-cocycle $σ$ on an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$, we construct an associated twisted Steinberg algebra $A_R(G;Σ)$, and we show that it coincides with $A_R(G,σ^{-1})$. Given any discrete field $\mathbb{F}_d$, we prove a graded uniqueness theorem for $A_{\mathbb{F}_d}(G,σ)$, and under the additional hypothesis that $G$ is effective, we prove a Cuntz--Krieger uniqueness theorem and show that simplicity of $A_{\mathbb{F}_d}(G,σ)$ is equivalent to minimality of $G$.

Reconstructing Etale Groupoids from Semigroups

We unify various étale groupoid reconstruction theorems such as: 1) Kumjian-Renault's reconstruction from a groupoid C*-algebra. 2) Exel's reconstruction from an ample inverse semigroup. 3) Steinberg's reconstruction from a groupoid ring. 4) Choi-Gardella-Thiel's reconstruction from a groupoid L^p-algebra. We do this by working with certain bumpy semigroups S of functions defined on an étale groupoid G. The semigroup structure of S together with the diagonal subsemigroup D then yields a natural domination relation < on S. The groupoid of <-ultrafilters is then isomorphic to the original groupoid G.

Strongly graded groupoid and directed graph algebras

We show the reduced $C^*$-algebra of a graded ample groupoid is a strongly graded $C^*$-algebra if and only if the corresponding Steinberg algebra is a strongly graded ring. We apply this result to get a theorem about the Leavitt path algebra and $C^*$-algebra of an arbitrary graph.

GCR and CCR Steinberg algebras

Kaplansky introduced the notions of CCR and GCR $C^*$-algebras because they have a tractable representation theory. Many years later, he introduced the notions of CCR and GCR rings. In this paper we characterize when the algebra of an ample groupoid over a field is CCR and GCR. The results turn out to be exact analogues of the corresponding characterization of locally compact groupoids with CCR and GCR $C^*$-algebras. As a consequence, we classify the CCR and GCR Leavitt path algebras.

Groupoid algebras as covariance algebras

Suppose $\mathcal{G}$ is a second-countable locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid, $G$ is a discrete group containing a unital subsemigroup $P$, and $c:\mathcal{G}\rightarrow G$ is a continuous cocycle. We derive conditions on the cocycle such that the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C_r^*(\mathcal{G})$ may be realised naturally as the covariance algebra of a product system over $P$ with coefficient algebra $C_r^*(c^{-1}(e))$. When $(G,P)$ is a quasi-lattice ordered group, we also derive conditions that allow $C_r^*(\mathcal{G})$ to be realised as the Cuntz--Nica--Pimsner algebra of a compactly aligned product system.

Simplicity of algebras associated to non-Hausdorff groupoids

We prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for Steinberg algebras associated to non-Hausdorff ample groupoids. We also prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for the C*-algebra associated to non-Hausdorff étale groupoids. Then we show how our results apply in the setting of tight representations of inverse semigroups, groups acting on graphs, and self-similar actions. In particular, we show that C*-algebra and the complex Steinberg algebra of the self-similar action of the Grigorchuk group are simple but the Steinberg algebra with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is not simple.

All classifiable Kirchberg algebras are $C^{\ast}$-algebras of ample groupoids

In this note we show that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT class is the $C^{\ast}$-algebra of a Hausdorff, ample, amenable and locally contracting groupoid. The non-unital case follows from Spielberg's graph-based models for Kirchberg algebras. Our contribution is the unital case and our proof builds on Spielberg's construction.

Étale groupoids and Steinberg algebras, a concise introduction

We give a concise introduction to (discrete) algebras arising from étale groupoids, (aka Steinberg algebras) and describe their close relationship with groupoid C*-algebras. Their connection to partial group rings via inverse semigroups also explored.

Inner products for Convex Bodies

We define a set inner product to be a function on pairs of convex bodies which is symmetric, Minkowski linear in each dimension, positive definite, and satisfies the natural analogue of the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality (which is not implied by the other conditions). We show that any set inner product can be embedded into an inner product space on the associated support functions, thereby extending fundamental results of Hormander and Radstrom. The set inner product provides a geometry on the space of convex bodies. We explore some of the properties of that geometry, and discuss an application of these ideas to the reconstruction of ancestral ecological niches in evolutionary biology.

$\mathbb{Z}$-graded rings as Cuntz-Pimsner rings

Given a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded ring $A$ and a subring $R\subseteq A$, it is natural to ask whether $A$ can be realised as the Cuntz-Pimsner ring of some $R$-system. In this paper, we derive sufficient conditions on $A$ and $R$ for this to be the case. As an application, we give conditions under which the Steinberg algebra $A_K(\mathcal{G})$ associated to a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded groupoid $\mathcal{G}=\sqcup_{n\in \mathbb{Z}} \mathcal{G}_n$ can be realised as the Cuntz-Pimsner ring of an $A_K(\mathcal{G}_0)$-system.

Strongly graded groupoids and strongly graded Steinberg algebras

We study strongly graded groupoids, which are topological groupoids $\mathcal G$ equipped with a continuous, surjective functor $κ: \mathcal G \to Γ$, to a discrete group $Γ$, such that $κ^{-1}(γ)κ^{-1}(δ) = κ^{-1}(γδ)$, for all $γ, δ\in Γ$. We introduce the category of graded $\mathcal G$-sheaves, and prove an analogue of Dade's Theorem: $\mathcal G$ is strongly graded if and only if every graded $\mathcal G$-sheaf is induced by a $\mathcal G_ε$-sheaf. The Steinberg algebra of a graded ample groupoid is graded, and we prove that the algebra is strongly graded if and only if the groupoid is. Applying this result, we obtain a complete graphical characterisation of strongly graded Leavitt path and Kumjian-Pask algebras.

Efficient Presentations of Relative Cuntz-Krieger Algebras

In this article, we present a new method to study relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras for higher-rank graphs. We only work with edges rather than paths of arbitrary degrees. We then use this method to simplify the existing results about relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We also give applications to study ideals and quotients of Toeplitz algebras.

Subsets of vertices give Morita equivalences of Leavitt path algebras

We show that every subset of vertices of a directed graph E gives a Morita equivalence between a subalgebra and an ideal of the associated Leavitt path algebra. We use this observation to prove an algebraic version of a theorem of Crisp and Gow: certain subgraphs of E can be contracted to a new graph G such that the Leavitt path algebras of E and G are Morita equivalent. We provide examples to illustrate how desingularising a graph, and in- or out-delaying of a graph, all fit into this setting.

A Generalised uniqueness theorem and the graded ideal structure of Steinberg algebras

Given an ample, Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$, and a unital commutative ring $R$, we consider the Steinberg algebra $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. First we prove a uniqueness theorem for this algebra and then, when $\mathcal{G}$ is graded by a cocycle, we study graded ideals in $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. Applications are given for two classes of ample groupoids, namely those coming from actions of groups on graphs, and also to groupoids defined in terms of Boolean dynamical systems.

AF-embeddability of $2$-graph algebras and quasidiagonality of $k$-graph algebras

We characterise quasidiagonality of the $C^*$-algebra of a cofinal $k$-graph in terms of an algebraic condition involving the coordinate matrices of the graph. This result covers all simple $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras. In the special case of cofinal $2$-graphs we further prove that AF-embeddability, quasidiagonality and stable finiteness of the $2$-graph algebra are all equivalent.

Using the Steinberg algebra model to determine the center of any Leavitt path algebra

Given an arbitrary graph, we describe the center of its Leavitt path algebra over a commutative unital ring. Our proof uses the Steinberg algebra model of the Leavitt path algebra. A key ingredient is a characterization of compact open invariant subsets of the unit space of the graph groupoid in terms of the underlying graph: an open invariant subset is compact if and only if its associated hereditary and saturated set of vertices satisfies Condition (F). We also give a basis of the center. Its cardinality depends on the number of minimal compact open invariant subsets of the unit space.

Cohn path algebras of higher-rank graphs

In this article, we introduce Cohn path algebras of higher-rank graphs. We prove that for a higher-rank graph $Λ$, there exists a higher-rank graph $TΛ$ such that the Cohn path algebra of $Λ$ is isomorphic to the Kumjian-Pask algebra of $TΛ$. We then use this isomorphism and properties of Kumjian-Pask algebras to study Cohn path algebras. This includes proving a uniqueness theorem for Cohn path algebras.
