Variational and Quasi-variational solutions to thick flows

We formulate the flow of thick fluids as evolution variational and quasi-variational inequalities, with a variable threshold on the absolute value of the deformation rate tensor. In the variational case, we show the existence and uniqueness of strong and weak solutions in the viscous case and also the existence of strong and weak solutions in the inviscid case. These problems correspond to solve, respectively, the Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations with an additional generalised Lagrange multiplier associated with the threshold on the deformation rate tensor. Applying the continuous dependence of strong and weak solutions to the variational inequalities for the Navier-Stokes with constraints on the derivatives, and on their respective generalised Lagrange multipliers, we can solve the case of the variable threshold depending on the solution itself that correspond to quasi-variational problems. \vspace{2mm} $$ \text{Dedicated to Vsevolod Alekseevich Solonnikov, {\em in memoriam}}$$

Lagrange multipliers and characteristic functions

We consider a stationary variational inequality with gradient constraint and obstacle. We prove that this problem can be described by an equation using a Lagrange multiplier and a characteristic function. The Lagrange multiplier contains information about the contact set of the modulus of the gradient of the solution with the gradient constraint, and the characteristic function is defined in the contact set of the solution with the obstacle. Moreover, given a convergent sequence of data, we prove the stability of the corresponding solutions.

An evolutionary vector-valued variational inequality and Lagrange multiplier

We prove existence and uniqueness of solution of an evolutionary vector-valued variational inequality defined in the convex set of vector valued functions $\boldsymbol v$ subject to the constraint $|\boldsymbol v|\le1$. We show that we can write the variational inequality as a system of equations on the unknowns $(\lambda,\boldsymbol u)$, where $\lambda$ is a (unique) Lagrange multiplier belonging to $L^p$ and $\boldsymbol u$ solves the variational inequality. Given data $(\boldsymbol f_n,\boldsymbol u_{n0})$ converging to $(\boldsymbol f,\boldsymbol u_0)$ in $\boldsymbol L^\infty(Q_T)\times H^1_0(\Omega)$, we prove the convergence of the solutions $(\lambda_n,\boldsymbol u_n)$ of the Lagrange multiplier problem to the solution of the limit problem, when we let $n\rightarrow \infty$.

Nonlocal Lagrange multipliers and transport densities

We prove the existence of generalised solutions of the Monge-Kantorovich equations with fractional $s$-gradient constraint, $0<s<1$, associated to a general, possibly degenerate, linear fractional operator of the type, \begin{equation*} \mathscr L^su=-D^s\cdot(AD^su+\bs b\,u)+\bs d\cdot D^su+c\,u , \end{equation*} with integrable data, in the space $Λ^{s,p}_0(Ω)$, which is the completion of the set of smooth functions with compact support in a bounded domain $Ω$ for the $L^p$-norm of the distributional Riesz fractional gradient $D^s$ in $\R^d$ (when $s=1$, $D^1=D$ is the classical gradient). The transport densities arise as generalised Lagrange multipliers in the dual space of $L^\infty(\R^d)$ and are associated to the variational inequalities of the corresponding transport potentials under the constraint $|D^su|\leq g$. Their existence is shown by approximating the variational inequality through a penalisation of the constraint and nonlinear regularisation of the linear operator $\mathscr L^su$. For this purpose, we also develop some relevant properties of the spaces $Λ^{s,p}_0(Ω)$, including the limit case $p=\infty$ and the continuous embeddings $Λ^{s,q}_0(Ω)\subset Λ^{s,p}_0(Ω)$, for $1\le p\le q\le\infty$. We also show the localisation of the nonlocal problems ($0<s<1$), to the local limit problem with classical gradient constraint when $s\rightarrow1$, for which most results are also new for a general, possibly degenerate, partial differential operator $\mathscr L^1u$ only with integrable coefficients and bounded gradient constraint.

On nonlocal variational and quasi-variational inequalities with fractional gradient

We extend classical results on variational inequalities with convex sets with gradient constraint to a new class of fractional partial differential equations in a bounded domain with constraint on the distributional Riesz fractional gradient, the $σ$-gradient ($0<σ<1$). We establish continuous dependence results with respect to the data, including the threshold of the fractional $σ$-gradient. Using these properties we give new results on the existence to a class of quasi-variational variational inequalities with fractional gradient constraint via compactness and via contraction arguments. Using the approximation of the solutions with a family of quasilinear penalisation problems we show the existence of generalised Lagrange multipliers for the $σ$-gradient constrained problem, extending previous results for the classical gradient case, i.e., with $σ=1$.

Evolutionary quasi-variational and variational inequalities with constraints on the derivatives

This paper considers a general framework for the study of the existence of quasi-variational and variational solutions to a class of nonlinear evolution systems in convex sets of Banach spaces describing constraints on a linear combination of partial derivatives of the solutions. The quasi-linear operators are of monotone type, but are not required to be coercive for the existence of weak solutions, which is obtained by a double penalisation/regularisation for the approximation of the solutions. In the case of time-dependent convex sets that are independent of the solution, we show also the uniqueness and the continuous dependence of the strong solutions of the variational inequalities, extending previous results to a more general framework.

Variational and Quasi-Variational Inequalities with Gradient Type Constraints

This survey on stationary and evolutionary problems with gradient constraints is based on developments of monotonicity and compactness methods applied to large classes of scalar and vectorial solutions to variational and quasi-variational inequalities. Motivated by models for critical state problems and applications to free boundary problems in Mechanics and in Physics, in this work several known properties are collected and presented and a few novel results and examples are found.

Solutions for linear conservation laws with gradient constraints

We consider variational inequality solutions with prescribed gradient constraints for first order linear boundary value problems. For operators with coefficients only in $L^2$, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solution by using a combination of parabolic regularization with a penalization in the nonlinear diffusion coefficient. We also prove the continuous dependence of the solution with respect to the data, as well as, in a coercive case, the asymptotic stabilization as time $t\rightarrow+\infty$ towards the stationary solution. In a particular situation, motivated by the transported sandpile problem, we give sufficient conditions for the equivalence of the first order problem with gradient constraint with a two obstacles problem, the obstacles being the signed distances to the boundary. This equivalence, in special conditions, illustrates also the possible stabilization of the solution in finite time.

Quasivariational solutions for first order quasilinear equations with gradient constraint

We prove the existence of solutions for an evolution quasi-variational inequality with a first order quasilinear operator and a variable convex set, which is characterized by a constraint on the absolute value of the gradient that depends on the solution itself. The only required assumption on the nonlinearity of this constraint is its continuity and positivity. The method relies on an appropriate parabolic regularization and suitable {\em a priori} estimates. We obtain also the existence of stationary solutions, by studying the asymptotic behaviour in time. In the variational case, corresponding to a constraint independent of the solution, we also give uniqueness results.

On a p-curl system arising in electromagnetism

We prove existence of solution of a $p$-curl type evolutionary system arising in electromagnetism with a power nonlinearity of order $p$, $1<p<\infty$, assuming natural tangential boundary conditions. We consider also the asymptotic behaviour in the power obtaining, when $p$ tends to infinity, a variational inequality with a curl constraint. We also discuss the existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on the data of the solutions to general variational inequalities with curl constraints dependent on time, as well as the asymptotic stabilization in time towards the stationary solution with and without constraint.

The nonlinear N-membranes evolution problem

The parabolic N-membranes problem for the p-Laplacian and the complete order constraint on the components of the solution is studied in what concerns the approximation, the regularity and the stability of the variational solutions. We extend to the evolutionary case the characterization of the Lagrange multipliers associated with the ordering constraint in terms of the characteristic functions of the coincidence sets. We give continuous dependence results, and study the asymptotic behavior as $t \to \infty$ of the solution and the coincidence sets, showing that they converge to their stationary counterparts.
