SLATE: Are AI-Generated Slides Educationally Effective? A Benchmark for Language Teaching Quality and Learner Knowledge Acquisition

LLMs have achieved remarkable capabilities in generating language teaching slides. However, a critical mismatch persists between visual polish and actual instructional effectiveness. To address this gap, we introduce SLATE (Slide-based Learning Assessment for Teaching Effectiveness), the first benchmark that evaluates AI-generated language teaching slides through instructional effectiveness and learner knowledge acquisition. SLATE transforms linguistics olympiad puzzles from low-resource languages with negligible web presence into 90 standardized instructional units comprising 1,133 assessable items, paired with a structured course outline and matched near- and far-transfer test sets. This pretest-posttest design eliminates pretrained knowledge leakage, ensuring gains reflect learning rather than prior recall. Using VLMs as scalable learner proxies and directionally supported by a three-system human pilot, our results show that content validity exhibits a weak association with learning gain, while pedagogical design exhibits a robust positive association. Moreover, most systems show a significant gap between near- and far-transfer accuracy, and even frontier models can produce negative learning gains. SLATE reveals a dissociation between artifact quality and instructional effectiveness, calling for a paradigm shift in how generative teaching systems are built, evaluated, and deployed.

Optimizing flow control with ensemble Kalman method for mitigating flow-induced vibration

The ensemble Kalman method is introduced for optimizing flow control strategies in order to mitigate the flow-induced vibration of structures. Different types of control strategies such as passive control, open-loop active control, and closed-loop active control are tested, showing the flexibility of the method in flow control optimization. The ensemble Kalman method is first tested to mitigate vortex shedding of flows around a circular cylinder by optimizing the placement of small cylinders downstream. Further, the method is assessed to suppress shock buffeting over the NACA 0012 airfoil by optimizing the movement of a compliant aileron. Our results for all test cases show that the ensemble-based method can effectively find optimal control strategies that significantly reduce the vibrations of aerodynamic force, and can be a useful alternative for flow control optimization, due to its merits in non-intrusiveness and ease of implementation.

Synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties of quasi-one-dimensional ACr$_3$As$_3$ (A = Rb, Cs)

Recently, new Cr-based superconductors, A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ (A = K, Rb, Cs), have gained a strong interest because of their one-dimensional crystal structures and electron correlations. Here we report the crystal structure and physical properties of two related materials ACr$_3$As$_3$ (A = Rb, Cs) which are synthesized via a soft-chemical A+ deintercalation in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. The new compounds remain one-dimensional (Cr$_3$As$_3$)$_{\infty}$ linear chains, and the interchain distance can be tuned by the incorporation of the alkali-metal cations with different sizes. The physical-property measurements indicate a local-moment behavior at high temperatures, and the moments freeze into a cluster spin-glass state below 5$\sim$6 K. No superconductivity was observed in both materials. We also found that, with increasing the interchain distance, the Cr effective moments increase monotonically, accompanied with the enhancement of semi-conductivity. Our results shed light on the understanding of occurrence of superconductivity in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$.

Do radio-loud AGN really follow the same relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion as normal galaxies?

In an examination of the relationship between the black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we studied two effects which may cause uncertainties in the black hole mass estimates of radio-loud AGNs: the relativistic beaming effect on the observed optical continuum radiation and the orientation effect on the broad emission line width. After correcting these two effects, we re-examined the relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion which derived from [OIII] line width for a sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs, and found the relation for radio-loud AGNs still deviated from that for nearby normal galaxies and radio-quiet AGNs. We also found there is no significant correlation between radio jet power and narrow [OIII] line width, indicating absence of strong interaction between radio jet and narrow line region. It may be that the deviation of the relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion of radio-loud AGNs is intrinsic, or that the [OIII] line width is not a good indicator of stellar velocity dispersion for radio-loud AGNs.
