Relativistic stochastic mechanics I: Langevin equation from observer's perspective

Two different versions of relativistic Langevin equation in curved spacetime background are constructed, both are manifestly general covariant. It is argued that, from the observer's point of view, the version which takes the proper time of the Brownian particle as evolution parameter contains some conceptual issues, while the one which makes use of the proper time of the observer is more physically sound. The two versions of the relativistic Langevin equation are connected by a reparametrization scheme. In spite of the issues contained in the first version of the relativistic Langevin equation, it still permits to extract the physical probability distributions of the Brownian particles, as is shown by Monte Carlo simulation in the example case of Brownian motion in $(1+1)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime.

Restricted phase space thermodynamics of charged AdS black holes in conformal gravity

The thermodynamics of charged spherically symmetric AdS black holes in conformal gravity is revisited using the recently proposed restricted phase space (RPS) formalism. This formalism avoids all the bizarreness that arose in the extended phase space formalism for this model. It is found that the charged AdS black holes in this model may belong to a new universality class which is different from all previously studied cases under the RPS formalism. Besides the distinguished isocharge $T-S$ and isothermal $Φ-Q_e$ behaviors, the absence of Hawking-Page transition is another notable feature. On the other hand, in the high temperature limit, the thermodynamic behavior of the present model become exactly the same as that of the Einstein gravity and the black hole scan models, which add further evidence for the universality of the recently reported correspondence between high temperature AdS black holes and low temperature quantum phonon gases in nonmetallic crystals.

High temperature AdS black holes are low temperature quantum phonon gases

We report a precise match between the high temperature $(D+2)$-dimensional Tangherlini-AdS black hole and the low temperature quantum phonon gas in $D$-dimensional nonmetallic crystals residing in $(D+1)$-dimensional flat spacetime. The match is realized by use of the recently proposed restricted phase space formalism for black hole thermodynamics, and the result can be viewed as a novel contribution to the AdS/CMT correspondence on a quantitative level.

Covariant transport equation and gravito-conductivity in generic stationary spacetimes

We find a near detailed balance solution to the relativistic Boltzmann equation under the relaxation time approximation with a collision term which differs from the Anderson-Witting model and is dependent on the stationary observer. Using this new solution, we construct an explicit covariant transport equation for the particle flux in response to the generalized temperature and chemical potential gradients in generic stationary spacetimes, with the transport tensors characterized by some integral functions in the chemical potential and the relativistic coldness. To illustrate the application of the transport equation we study probe systems in Rindler and Kerr spacetimes and analyze the asymptotic properties of the gravito-conductivity tensor in the near horizon limit. It turns out that both the longitudinal and lateral parts (if present) of the gravito-conductivity tend to be divergent in the near horizon limit. In the weak field limit, our results coincide with with the non-relativistic gravitational transport equation which follows from the direct application of the Drude model.

Restricted phase space thermodynamics for black holes in higher dimensions and higher curvature gravities

The recently proposed restricted phase space thermodynamics is shown to be applicable to a large class of higher dimensional higher curvature gravity models coupled to Maxwell field, which are known as black hole scan models and are labeled by the spacetime dimension $d$ and the highest order $k$ of the Lanczos-Lovelock densities appearing in the action. Three typical example cases with $(d,k)=(5,1), (5,2)$ and $(6,2)$ are chosen as example cases and studied in some detail. These cases are representatives of Einstein-Hilbert, Chern-Simons and Born-Infield like gravity models. Our study indicates that the Einstein-Hilbert and Born-Infield like gravity models have similar thermodynamic behaviors, e.g. the existence of isocharge $T-S$ phase transitions with the same critical exponents, the existence of isovoltage $T-S$ transitions and the Hawking-Page like transitions, and the similar high temperature asymptotic behaviors for the isocharge heat capacities, etc. However, the Chern-Simons like $(5,2)$-model behaves quite differently. Neither isocharge nor isovoltage $T-S$ transitions could occur and no Hawking-Page like transition is allowed. This seems to indicate that the Einstein-Hilbert and Born-Infield like models belong to the same universality class while the Chern-Simons like models do not.

Restricted phase space thermodynamics for AdS black holes via holography

A new formalism for thermodynamics of AdS black holes called the {\em restricted phase space thermodynamics} (RPST) is proposed. The construction is based on top of Visser's holographic thermodynamics, but with the AdS radius fixed as a constant. Thus the RPST is free of the $(P,V)$ variables but inherits the central charge and chemical potential as a new pair of conjugate thermodynamic variables. In this formalism, the Euler relation and the Gibbs-Duhem equation hold simultaneously with the first law of black hole thermodynamics, which guarantee the appropriate homogeneous behaviors for the black hole mass and the intensive variables. The formalism is checked in detail in the example case of 4-dimensional RN-AdS black hole in Einstein-Maxwell theory, in which some interesting thermodynamic behaviors are revealed.

Thermodynamics for higher dimensional rotating black holes with variable Newton constant

The extensivity for the thermodynamics of general $D$-dimensional rotating black holes with or without a cosmological constant can be proved analytically, provided the effective number of microscopic degrees of freedom and the chemical potential are given respectively as $N=L^{D-2}/G, μ= GTI_D/L^{D-2}$, where $G$ is the variable Newton constant, $I_D$ is the Euclidean action and $L$ is a constant length scale. In the cases without a cosmological constant, i.e. the Myers-Perry black holes, the physical mass and the intensive variables can be expressed as explicit macro state functions in the extensive variables in a simple and compact form, which allows for an analytical calculation for the heat capacity. The results indicate that the Myers-Perry black holes with zero, one and $k$ equal rotation parameters are all thermodynamically unstable.

Black hole thermodynamics is extensive with variable Newton constant

Inspired by the recent studies on the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in the restricted phase space formalism, we propose a similar formalism for the thermodynamics of non-AdS black holes with variable Newton constant. It is shown that, by introducing the new variables $N,μ$, where $N$ is proportional to the inverse Newton constant and $μ$ its conjugate variable, referred to as the chemical potential, the black hole thermodynamics can be formulated in a form which is consistent with the standard extensive thermodynamics for open macroscopic systems, with the first law and the Euler relation hold simultaneously. This formalism has profound implications, in particular, the mass is a homogeneous function of the first order in the extensive variables and the intensive variables are zeroth order homogeneous functions. The chemical potential is shown to be closely related to the Euclidean action evaluated at the black hole configuration.

Thermodynamics of Kerr-AdS black holes in the restricted phase space

The thermodynamics for Kerr-AdS black hole in four dimensions is revisited using the recently proposed restricted phase space formalism, which includes the central charge $C$ of the dual CFT and the chemical potential $μ$, but excludes the pressure and the conjugate volume, as thermodynamic variables. The Euler relation holds automatically, and the first order homogeneity of the mass and the zeroth order homogeneity of the intensive variables are made explicit. Thermodynamic processes involving each pair of conjugate variables are studied in some detail, with emphasis on the scaling properties of the equations of states. It turns out that the thermodynamic behavior of the Kerr-AdS black hole is very similar to that of the RN-AdS black hole studied earlier. In particular, it is found that, there is a first order supercritical phase equilibrium in the $T-S$ processes at fixed nonvanishing angular momentum, while at vanishing angular momentum or at fixed angular velocities, there is always a non-equilibrium transition from a small unstable black hole state to a large stable black hole state. Moreover, there is a Hawking-Page phase transition in the $μ-C$ processes. Due to the complicatedness of the Kerr metric, the exact critical point and the Hawking-Page temperature are worked out explicitly only in the slow rotating limit, however the characteristic thermodynamic properties do not rely on the slow rotating approximation.

Relativistic transformation of thermodynamic parameters and refined Saha equation

The relativistic transformation rule for temperature is a subject under debate for more than 110 years. Several incompatible proposals exist in the literature, but a final resolution is still missing. In this work, we reconsider the problem of relativistic transformation rules for a number of thermodynamic parameters, including temperature, chemical potential, pressure, entropy and enthalpy densities for a relativistic perfect fluid using relativistic kinetic theory. The analysis is carried out in a fully relativistic covariant manner, and the explicit transformation rules for the above quantities are obtained in both Minkowski and Rindler spacetimes. Our results suggest that the temperature of a moving fluid appears to be colder, supporting the proposal by de Broglie, Einstein and Planck in contrast to other proposals. Moreover, in the case of Rindler fluid, our work indicates that, the total number of particles and the total entropy of a perfect fluid in a box whose bottom is parallel to the Rindler horizon are proportional to the area of the bottom, but are independent of the height of the box, provided the bottom of the box is sufficiently close to the Rindler horizon. The area dependence of the particle number implies that the particles tend to be gathered toward the bottom of the box and hence implicitly determines the distribution of chemical potential of the system, whereas the area dependence of the entropy indicates that the entropy is still additive and may find some applications in explaining the area law of black hole entropy. As a by product, we also obtain a relativistically refined version of the famous Saha equation which holds in both Minkowski and Rindler spacetimes.

Work and work-energy theorem in curved spacetime

The definitions of gravitational work as well as work done by the total external force on a massive probe particle moving in generic spacetime backgrounds are proposed. These definitions are given in the form of scalar integrals and thus, are independent of coordinate choices. However, the dependence on the choice of observer field is essential and inevitable. The definitions are checked in the case of Minkowski, Schwarzschild, Reisner-Nordström and Kerr-Newman spacetimes and agreements with Newtonian mechanical definitions are verified in the slow motion or the far field limit.

f(Ricci) gravity

f(Ricci) gravity is a special kind of higher curvature gravity whose bulk Lagrangian density is the trace of a matrix-valued function of the Ricci tensor. It is shown that, under some mild constraints, f(Ricci) gravity admits Einstein manifolds as exact vacuum solutions, and can be ghost free around maximally symmetric Einstein vacua. It is also shown that the entropy for spherically symmetric black holes in f(Ricci) gravity calculated via Wald's method and the boundary Noether charge approach proposed by Majhi and Padmanabhan are in good agreement.

Ricci polynomial gravity

We study a novel class of higher curvature gravity models in $n$ spacetime dimensions which we call Ricci polynomial gravity. The action is consisted purely of a polynomial in Ricci curvature of order $N$. In the absence of the second order terms in the action, the models are ghost free around the Minkowski vacuum. By appropriately choosing the coupling coefficients in front of each terms in the action, it is shown that the models can have multiple vacua with different effective cosmological constants, and can be made free of ghost and scalar degrees of freedom around at least one of the maximally symmetric vacua for any $n>2$ and any $N\geq 4$. We also discuss some of the physical implications of the existence of multiple vacua in the contexts of black hole physics and cosmology.

Black hole thermodynamics and heat engines in conformal gravity

The extended phase space thermodynamics and heat engines for static spherically symmetric black hole solutions of four dimensional conformal gravity are studied in detail. It is argued that the equation of states (EOS) for such black holes is always branched, any continuous thermodynamical process cannot drive the system from one branch of the EOS into another branch. Meanwhile, the thermodynamical volume is bounded from above, making the black holes always super-entropic in one branch and may also be super-entropic in another branch in certain range of the temperature. The Carnot and Stirling heat engines associated to such black holes are shown to be distinct from each other. For rectangular heat engines, the efficiency always approaches zero when the rectangle becomes extremely narrow, and given the highest and lowest working temperatures fixed, there is always a maximum for the efficiency of such engines.

Time evolving fluid from Vaidya spacetime

A time evolving fluid system is constructed on a timelike boundary hypersurface at finite cutoff in Vaidya spacetime. The approach used to construct the fluid equations is a direct extension of the ordinary Gravity/Fluid correspondence under the constrained fluctuation obeying Petrov type I conditions. The explicit relationships between the time dependent fluctuation modes and the fluid quantities such as density, velocity field and kinematic viscosity parameters are established, and the resulting fluid system is governed by a system of a sourced continuity equation and a compressible Navier-Stokes equation with non-trivial time evolution.

Holographic entanglement entropies for Schwarzschild and Reisner-Nordström black holes in asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes

The holographic entanglement entropies (HEE) associated with four dimensional Schwarzschild and Reisner-Nordström black holes in asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes are investigated. Unlike the cases of asymptotically AdS spacetimes for which the boundaries are always taken at (timelike) conformal infinities, we take the boundaries at either large but finite radial coordinate (far boundary) or very close to the black hole event horizons (near horizon boundary). The reason for such choices is that such boundaries are similar to the conformal infinity of AdS spacetime in that they are all timelike, so that there may be some hope to define dual systems with ordinary time evolution on such boundaries. Our results indicate that, in the case of far boundaries, the leading order contribution to the HEEs come from the background Minkowski spacetime, however, the next to leading order contribution which arises from the presence of the black holes is always proportional to the black hole mass, which constitutes a version of the first law of the HEE for asymptotically flat spacetimes, and the higher order contributions are always negligibly small. In the case of near horizon boundaries, the leading order contribution to the HEE is always proportional to the area of the black hole event horizon, and the case of extremal RN black hole is distinguished from the cases of non-extremal black holes in that the minimal surface defining the HEE is completely immersed inside the boundary up to the second order in the perturbative expansion.

Fluids and vortex from constrained fluctuations around C-metric black hole

By foliating the four-dimensional C-metric black hole spacetime, we consider a kind of initial-value-like formulation of the vacuum Einstein's equation, the holographic initial data is a double consisting of the induced metric and the Brown-York energy momentum tensor on an arbitrary initial hypersurface. Then by perturbing the initial data that generates the background spacetime, it is shown that, in an appropriate limit, the fluctuation modes are governed by the continuity equation and the compressible Navier-Stokes equation which describe the momentum transport in non-relativistic viscous fluid on a flat Newtonian space. It turns out that the flat space fluid behaves as a pure vortex and the viscosity to entropy ratio is subjected to the black hole acceleration.

C-metric solution for conformal gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field

The C-metric solution of conformal gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field is presented. The solution belongs to the class of Petrov type D spacetimes and is conformal to the standard AdS C-metric appeared in vacuum Einstein gravity. For all parameter ranges, we identify some of the physically interesting static regions and the corresponding coordinate ranges. The solution may contain a black hole event horizon, an acceleration horizon, either of which may be cut by the conformal infinity or be hidden behind the conformal infinity. Since the model is conformally invariant, we also discussed the possible effects of the conformal gauge choices on the structure of the spacetime.
