Compact homogeneous locally conformally Kahler manifolds are Vaisman. A new proof

An LCK manifold with potential is a complex manifold with a Kahler potential on its cover, such that any deck transformation multiplies the Kahler potential by a constant multiplier. We prove that any homogeneous LCK manifold admits a metric with LCK potential. This is used to give a new proof that any compact homogeneous LCK manifold is Vaisman.

Supersymmetry and Hodge theory on Sasakian and Vaisman manifolds

Sasakian manifolds are odd-dimensional counterpart to Kahler manifolds. They can be defined as contact manifolds equipped with an invariant Kahler structure on their symplectic cone. The quotient of this cone by the homothety action is a complex manifold called Vaisman. We study harmonic forms and Hodge decomposition on Vaisman and Sasakian manifolds. We construct a Lie superalgebra associated to a Sasakian manifold in the same way as the Kahler supersymmetry algebra is associated to a Kahler manifold. We use this construction to produce a self-contained, coordinate-free proof of the results by Tachibana, Kashiwada and Sato on the decomposition of harmonic forms and cohomology of Sasakian and Vaisman manifolds. In the last section, we compute the supersymmetry algebra of Sasakian manifolds explicitly.

Closed orbits of Reeb fields on Sasakian manifolds and elliptic curves on Vaisman manifolds

A compact complex manifold $V$ is called Vaisman if it admits an Hermitian metric which is conformal to a Kähler one, and a non-isometric conformal action by $\mathbb C$. It is called quasi-regular if the $\mathbb C$-action has closed orbits. In this case the corresponding leaf space is a projective orbifold, called the quasi-regular quotient of $V$. It is known that the set of all quasi-regular Vaisman complex structures is dense in the appropriate deformation space. We count the number of closed elliptic curves on a Vaisman manifold, proving that their number is either infinite or equal to the sum of all Betti numbers of a Kähler orbifold obtained as a quasi-regular quotient of $V$. We also give a new proof of a result by Rukimbira showing that the number of Reeb orbits on a Sasakian manifold $M$ is either infinite or equal to the sum of all Betti numbers of a Kähler orbifold obtained as an $S^1$-quotient of $M$.

Locally conformally Kahler manifolds admitting a holomorphic conformal flow

A manifold $M$ is locally conformally Kahler (LCK) if it admits a Kahler covering with monodromy acting by holomorphic homotheties. Let $M$ be an LCK manifold admitting a holomorphic conformal flow of diffeomorphisms, lifted to a non-isometric homothetic flow on its covering. We show that $M$ admits an automorphic potential. This version was added 10 years after publication to correct some errors in the original.

Twisted Dolbeault cohomology of nilpotent Lie algebras

It is well known that cohomology of any non-trivial 1-dimensional local system on a nilmanifold vanishes (this result is due to L. Alaniya). A complex nilmanifold is a quotient of a nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant complex structure by an action of a discrete, co-compact subgroup. We prove a Dolbeault version of Alaniya's theorem, showing that the Dolbeault cohomology of a nilpotent Lie algebra with coefficients in any non-trivial 1-dimensional local system vanishes. Note that the Dolbeault cohomology of the corresponding local system on the manifold is not necessarily zero. This implies that the twisted version of Console-Fino theorem is false (Console-Fino proved that the Dolbeault cohomology of a complex nilmanifold is equal to the Dolbeault cohomology of its Lie algebra). As an application, we give a new proof of a theorem due to H. Sawai, who obtained an explicit description of LCK nilmanifolds. An LCK structure on a manifold $M$ is a Kähler structure on its cover $\tilde M$ such that the deck transform map acts on $\tilde M$ by homotheties. We show that any complex nilmanifold admitting an LCK structure is Vaisman, and is obtained as a compact quotient of the product of a Heisenberg group and the real line.

Structure theorem for compact Vaisman manifolds

A locally conformally Kaehler (l.c.K.) manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Kaehler covering $\tilde M$, with each deck transformation acting by Kaehler homotheties. A compact l.c.K. manifold is Vaisman if it admits a holomorphic flow acting by non-trivial homotheties on $\tilde M$. We prove a structure theorem for compact Vaisman manifolds. Every compact Vaisman manifold M is fibered over a circle, the fibers are Sasakian, the fibration is locally trivial, and M is reconstructed as a Riemannian suspension from the Sasakian structure on the fibers and the monodromy automorphism induced by this fibration. This construction is canonical and functorial in both directions.

Hopf surfaces in locally conformally Kahler manifolds with potential

An LCK manifold with potential is a compact quotient M of a Kahler manifold X equipped with a positive plurisubharmonic function f, such that the monodromy group acts on $X$ by holomorphic homotheties and maps f to a function proportional to f. It is known that M admits an LCK potential if and only if it can be holomorphically embedded to a Hopf manifold. We prove that any non-Vaisman LCK manifold with potential contains a complex surface with normalization biholomorphic to a Hopf surface H. Moreover, H can be chosen non-diagonal, hence, also not admitting a Vaisman structure.

A characterization of compact locally conformally hyperkähler manifolds

We give an equivalent definition of compact locally conformally hyperkähler manifolds in terms of the existence of a nondegenerate complex two-form with natural properties. This is a conformal analogue of Beauville's theorem stating that a compact Kähler manifold admitting a holomorphic symplectic form is hyperkähler.

Flat affine subvarieties in Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds

The Oeljeklaus-Toma (OT-) manifolds are compact, complex, non-Kahler manifolds constructed by Oeljeklaus and Toma, and generalizing the Inoue surfaces. Their construction uses the number-theoretic data: a number field $K$ and a torsion-free subgroup $U$ in the group of units of the ring of integers of $K$, with rank of $U$ equal to the number of real embeddings of $K$. We prove that any complex subvariety of smallest possible positive dimension in an OT-manifold is also flat affine. This is used to show that if all non-trivial elements in $U$ are primitive in $K$, then $X$ contains no proper complex subvarieties.

Locally conformally Kähler manifolds with holomorphic Lee field

We prove that a compact lcK manifold with holomorphic Lee vector field is Vaisman provided that either the Lee field has constant norm or the metric is Gauduchon (i.e., the Lee field is divergence-free). We also give examples of compact lcK manifolds with holomorphic Lee vector field which are not Vaisman.

Positivity of LCK potential

Let $M$ be a complex manifold and $L$ an oriented real line bundle on M equipped with a flat connection. An LCK ("locally conformally Kahler") form is a closed, positive (1,1)-form taking values in L, and an LCK manifold is one which admits an LCK form. Locally, any LCK form is expressed as an L-valued pluri-Laplacian of a function called LCK potential. We consider a manifold $M$ with an LCK form admitting a global LCK potential, and prove that M admits a global, positive LCK potential. Then M admits a holomorphic embedding to a Hopf manifold.

Weighted Bott-Chern and Dolbeault cohomology for LCK-manifolds with potential

A locally conformally Kahler (LCK) manifold is a complex manifold with a Kahler structure on its covering and the deck transform group acting on it by holomorphic homotheties. One could think of an LCK manifold as of a complex manifold with a Kahler form taking values in a local system $L$, called the conformal weight bundle. The $L$-valued cohomology of $M$ is called Morse-Novikov cohomology. It was conjectured that (just as it happens for Kahler manifolds) the Morse-Novikov complex satisfies the $dd^c$-lemma. If true, it would have far-reaching consequences for the geometry of LCK manifolds. Counterexamples to the Morse-Novikov $dd^c$-lemma on Vaisman manifolds were found by R. Goto. We prove that $dd^c$-lemma is true with coefficients in a sufficiently general power $L^a$ of $L$ on any LCK manifold with potential (this includes Vaisman manifolds). We also prove vanishing of Dolbeault and Bott-Chern cohomology with coefficients in $L^a$. The same arguments are used to prove degeneration of the Dolbeault-Frohlicher spectral sequence with coefficients in any power of $L$.

Embedding of LCK manifolds with potential into Hopf manifolds using Riesz-Schauder theorem

An locally conformally Kahler (LCK) manifold with potential is a complex manifold with a cover which admits an automorphic Kahler potential. An LCK manifold with potential can be embedded to a Hopf manifold, if its dimension is at least 3. We give a functional-analytic proof of this result based on Riesz-Schauder theorem and Montel theorem. We give an alternative argument for complex surfaces, deducing embedding theorem from the Spherical Shell Conjecture.

The spectral sequence of the canonical foliation on Vaisman manifolds

In this paper we investigate the spectral sequence associated to a Riemannian foliation which arises naturally on a Vaisman manifold. Using the Betti numbers of the underlying manifold we establish a lower bound for the dimension of some terms of this cohomological object. This way we obtain cohomological obstructions for two-dimensional foliations to be induced from a Vaisman structure. We show that if the foliation is quasi-regular the lower bound is realized. In the final part of the paper we discuss two examples.

Basic Morse-Novikov cohomology for foliations

In this paper we find sufficient conditions for the vanishing of the Morse-Novikov cohomology on Riemannian foliations. We work out a Bochner technique for twisted cohomological complexes, obtaining corresponding vanishing results. Also, we generalize for our setting vanishing results from the case of closed Riemannian manifolds. Several examples are presented, along with applications in the context of l.c.s. and l.c.K. foliations.

Compact pluricanonical manifolds are Vaisman

A locally conformally Kahler manifold is a Hermitian manifold $(M,I,ω)$ satisfying $dω=θ\wedge ω$, where $θ$ is a closed 1-form, called the Lee form of $M$. It is called pluricanonical if $\nablaθ$ is of Hodge type $(2,0)+(0,2)$, where $\nabla$ is the Levi-Civita connection, and Vaisman if $\nablaθ=0$. We show that a compact LCK manifold is pluricanonical if and only if the Lee form has constant length and the Kahler form of its covering admits an automorphic potential. Using a degenerate Monge-Ampere equation and the classification of surfaces of Kahler rank one, due to Brunella, Chiose and Toma, we show that any pluricanonical metric on a compact manifold is Vaisman. Several errata to our previous work are given in the last Section.

LCK rank of locally conformally Kahler manifolds with potential

An LCK manifold with potential is a compact quotient of a Kahler manifold $X$ equipped with a positive Kahler potential $f$, such that the monodromy group acts on $X$ by holomorphic homotheties and multiplies $f$ by a character. The LCK rank is the rank of the image of this character, considered as a function from the monodromy group to real numbers. We prove that an LCK manifold with potential can have any rank between 1 and $b_1(M)$. Moreover, LCK manifolds with proper potential (ones with rank 1) are dense. Two errata to our previous work are given in the last Section.
