Conformally Einstein Products and Nearly Kähler Manifolds

In the first part of this note we study compact Riemannian manifolds (M,g) whose Riemannian product with R is conformally Einstein. We then consider compact 6--dimensional almost Hermitian manifolds of type W_1+W_4 in the Gray--Hervella classification admitting a parallel vector field and show that (under some regularity assumption) they are obtained as mapping tori of isometries of compact Sasaki-Einstein 5-dimensional manifolds. In particular, we obtain examples of inhomogeneous locally (non-globally) conformal nearly Kähler compact manifolds.

Morse-Novikov cohomology of locally conformally Kähler manifolds

A locally conformally Kahler (LCK) manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Kahler covering, with the monodromy acting on this covering by homotheties. We define three cohomology invariants, the Lee class, the Morse-Novikov class, and the Bott-Chern class, of an LCK-structure. These invariants together play the same role as the Kahler class in Kahler geometry. If these classes for two LCK-structures coincide, the difference between these structures can be expressed by a smooth potential, similar to the Kahler case. We show that the Morse-Novikov class and the Bott-Chern class of a Vaisman manifold vanishes. Moreover, for any LCK-structure on a Vaisman manifold, we prove that its Morse-Novikov class vanishes. We show that a compact LCK-manifold $M$ with vanishing Bott-Chern class admits a holomorphic embedding to a Hopf manifold, if $\dim_\C M \geq 3$, a result which parallels the Kodaira embedding theorem.

Einstein-Weyl structures on complex manifolds and conformal version of Monge-Ampere equation

A Hermitian Einstein-Weyl manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Ricci-flat Kaehler covering W, with the deck transform acting on W by homotheties. If compact, it admits a canonical Vaisman metric, due to Gauduchon. We show that a Hermitian Einstein-Weyl structure on a compact complex manifold is determined by its volume form. This result is a conformal analogue of Calabi's theorem stating the uniqueness of Kaehler metrics with a given volume form in a given Kaehler class. We prove that a solution of a conformal version of complex Monge-Ampere equation is unique. We conjecture that a Hermitian Einstein-Weyl structure on a compact complex manifold is unique, up to a holomorphic automorphism, and compare this conjecture to Bando-Mabuchi theorem.

Embeddings of compact Sasakian manifolds

Let M be a compact Sasakian manifold. We show that M admits a CR-embedding into a Sasakian manifold diffeomorphic to a sphere, and this embedding is compatible with the respective Reeb fields. We argue that a stronger embedding theorem cannot be obtained. We use an extension theorem for Kaehler geometry: given a compact Kaehler manifolds $X\subset Y$, and a Kaehler form $ω$ on $X$ which lies in a Kaehler class of $Y$ restricted to $X$, $ω$ can be extended to a Kaehler form on $Y$.

Constructions in Sasakian Geometry

We describe various constructions in Sasakian geometry. First we generalize the join construction of the first two authors to arbitrary Sasakian manifolds. We then give several examples, including ones which prove the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metrics on manifolds homeomorphic to $S^2\times S^5.$ Then we use a generalization of the join construction due to Lerman, namely contact fibre bundles, to give a theorem constructing toric Sasakian structures. Finally, we explicitly construct regular toric Sasakian structures on all simply connected regular contact manifolds in dimension five.

Sasakian structures on CR-manifolds

A contact manifold $M$ can be defined as a quotient of a symplectic manifold $X$ by a proper, free action of $\R^{>0}$, with the symplectic form homogeneous of degree 2. If $X$ is, in addition, Kaehler, and its metric is also homogeneous of degree 2, $M$ is called Sasakian. A Sasakian manifold is realized naturally as a level set of a Kaehler potential on a complex manifold, hence it is equipped with a pseudoconvex CR-structure. We show that any Sasakian manifold $M$ is CR-diffeomorphic to an $S^1$-bundle of unit vectors in a positive line bundle on a projective Kähler orbifold. This induces an embedding from $M$ to an algebraic cone $C$. We show that this embedding is uniquely defined by the CR-structure. Additionally, we classify the Sasakian metrics on an odd-dimensional sphere equipped with a standard CR-structure.

Locally conformally Kaehler manifolds with potential

A locally conformally Kähler (LCK) manifold $M$ is one which is covered by a Kähler manifold $\tilde M$ with the deck transform group acting conformally on $\tilde M$. If $M$ admits a holomorphic flow, acting on $\tilde M$ conformally, it is called a Vaisman manifold. Neither the class of LCK manifolds nor that of Vaisman manifolds is stable under small deformations. We define a new class of LCK-manifolds, called LCK manifolds with potential, which is closed under small deformations. All Vaisman manifolds are LCK with potential. We show that an LCK-manifold with potential admits a covering which can be compactified to a Stein variety by adding one point. This is used to show that any LCK manifold M with potential, $\dim M > 2$, can be embedded to a Hopf manifold, thus improving on similar results for Vaisman. manifolds.

Reduction of Vaisman structures in complex and quaternionic geometry

We consider locally conformal Kaehler geometry as an equivariant (homothetic) Kaehler geometry: a locally conformal Kaehler manifold is, up to equivalence, a pair (K,Γ) where K is a Kaehler manifold and Γa discrete Lie group of biholomorphic homotheties acting freely and properly discontinuously. We define a new invariant of a locally conformal Kaehler manifold (K,Γ) as the rank of a natural quotient of Γ, and prove its invariance under reduction. This equivariant point of view leads to a proof that locally conformal Kaehler reduction of compact Vaisman manifolds produces Vaisman manifolds and is equivalent to a Sasakian reduction. Moreover we define locally conformal hyperkaehler reduction as an equivariant version of hyperkaehler reduction and in the compact case we show its equivalence with 3-Sasakian reduction. Finally we show that locally conformal hyperkaehler reduction induces hyperkaehler with torsion (HKT) reduction of the associated HKT structure and the two reductions are compatible, even though not every HKT reduction comes from a locally conformal hyperkaehler reduction.

Non-zero contact and Sasakian reduction

We complete the reduction of Sasakian manifolds with the non-zero case by showing that Willett's contact reduced space is compatible with the Sasakian structure. We then prove the compatibility of the non-zero Sasakian (in particular, contact) reduction with the reduction of the Kähler (in particular, symplectic) cone. We provide examples obtained by toric actions on Sasakian spheres and make some comments concerning the curvature of the quotients.

Potential one-forms for hyperkähler structures with torsion

It is shown that an HKT-space with closed parallel potential 1-form has $D(2,1;-1)$-symmetry. Every locally conformally hyperkähler manifold generates this type of geometry. The HKT-spaces with closed parallel potential 1-form arising in this way are characterized by their symmetries and an inhomogeneous cubic condition on their torsion.

Locally conformal Kaehler reduction

We define reduction of locally conformal Kaehler manifolds, considered as conformal Hermitian manifolds, and we show its equivalence with an unpublished construction given by Biquard and Gauduchon. We show the compatibility between this reduction and Kaehler reduction of the universal cover. By a recent result of Kamishima and the second author, in the Vaisman case (that is, when a metric in the conformal class has parallel Lee form) if the manifold is compact its universal cover comes equipped with the structure of Kaehler cone over a Sasaki compact manifold. We show the compatibility between our reduction and Sasaki reduction, hence describing a subgroup of automorphisms whose action causes reduction to bear a Vaisman structure. Then we apply this theory to construct a wide class of Vaisman manifolds.

Cosphere bundle reduction in contact geometry

We extend the theorems concerning the equivariant symplectic reduction of the cotangent bundle to contact geometry. The role of the cotangent bundle is taken by the cosphere bundle. We use Albert's method for reduction at zero and Willett's method for non-zero reduction. We provide examples for both cases.

Weyl structures on quaternionic manifolds. A state of the art

This is a survey on quaternion Hermitian Weyl (locally conformally quaternion Kähler) and hyperhermitian Weyl (locally conformally hyperkähler) manifolds. These geometries appear by requesting the compatibility of some quaternion Hermitian or hyperhermitian structure with a Weyl structure. The motivation for such a study is two-fold: it comes from the constantly growing interest in Weyl (and Einstein-Weyl) geometry and, on the other hand, from the necessity of understanding the existing classes of quaternion Hermitian manifolds.

Transformations of compact locally conformally Kähler manifolds

We characterize compact locally conformally Kähler (l.c.K.) manifolds under the assumption of a purely conformal, holomorphic circle action. As an application, we determine the structure of the compact l.c.K. manifolds with parallel Lee form. We introduce the Lee-Cauchy-Riemann (LCR) transformations as a class of diffeomorphisms preserving the specific $G$-structure of l.c.K. manifolds. Then we characterize the Hopf manifolds, up to holomorphic isometry, as compact l.c.K. manifolds admitting a certain closed LCR action of $\mathbb{C}^*$.

On some Moment Maps and Induced Hopf Bundles in the Quaternionic Projective Space

We describe a diagram containing the zero sets of the moment maps associated to the diagonal U(1) and Sp(1) actions on the quaternionic projective space HP^n. These sets are related both to focal sets of submanifolds and to Sasakian-Einstein structures on induced Hopf bundles. As an application, we construct a complex structure on the Stiefel manifolds V_2 (C^{n+1}) and V_4 (R^{n+1}), the one on the former manifold not being compatible with its known hypercomplex structure.
