Real-Time Visualization of the Spatiotemporal Dynamics of 3D Solitons

Three-dimensional (3D) optical solitons bear far stronger relevance to multi-dimensional nonlinear dynamics prevalent in complex physical, chemical and biological systems than conventional 1D solitons, and they support far richer and more intricate phenomena arising from their spatiotemporal degrees of freedom. However, real-time recording of 3D soliton evolution with simultaneous spatiotemporal resolution remains a critical challenging. Here, we demonstrate long-term real-time visualization of 3D soliton dynamics with spatiotemporal resolution using high-speed photodetectors combined with joint space- and time-division multiplexing. We visually capture complex transient behaviors of 3D solitons in a multimode fiber laser and, by integrating our method with the time-stretch technique, simultaneously record pulse-resolved beam and spectral evolutions. We observe that during the birth of 3D solitons, the highly multimode beam stabilizes for a substantial interval prior to spectral broadening, indicating that a large number of transverse modes have already locked before longitudinal mode proliferation. These findings highlight the critical importance of real-time spatiotemporal visualization for advancing ultrafast multimode laser design and delivering new insights into high-dimensional nonlinear dynamics.

Effects of Random Birefringence in Multimode Fibers on Nonlinear Ultrashort Pulse Propagation

Nonlinear pulse propagation in multimode fibers (MMFs) has attracted significant attention recently due to the rich spatiotemporal nonlinearities and promising applications. In practical scenarios, random birefringence in MMFs cannot be neglected, affecting the polarization-dependent nonlinear pulse propagation. This paper investigates the influence of random birefringence in MMFs on nonlinear ultrashort pulse propagation using a modified generalized multimode nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. Two scenarios, spatial beam self-cleaning and multimode soliton propagation, are specifically examined. It is found that while random birefringence typically weakens nonlinearity in MMFs, certain nonlinear processes such as soliton self-frequency shift caused by intra-pulse Raman effect exhibit a complex relationship with random birefringence. Moreover, the study reveals that beam self-cleaning can endure random birefringence at high input peak powers. This research provides guidance for practical applications that utilize the nonlinear transmission of ultrashort pulses in MMFs.

Magnetron Sputtered Non-Toxic and Precious Element-Free Ti-Zr-Ge Metallic Glass Nanofilms with Enhanced Biocorrosion Resistance

The chemical composition and structural state of advanced alloys are the decisive factors in optimum biomedical performance. This contribution presents unique Ti-Zr-Ge metallic glass thin-film compositions fabricated by magnetron sputter deposition targeted for nanocoatings for biofouling prevention. The amorphous nanofilms with nanoscale roughness exhibit a large relaxation and supercooled liquid regions as revealed by flash differential scanning calorimetry. Ti\textsubscript{68}Zr\textsubscript{8}Ge\textsubscript{24} shows the lowest corrosion (0.17 \textmu A cm\textsuperscript{\textminus2}) and passivation (1.22 \textmu A cm\textsuperscript{\textminus2}) current densities, with the lowest corrosion potential of \textminus0.648 V and long-range stability against pitting, corroborating its excellent performance in phosphate buffer solution at 37 {\textdegree}C. The oxide layer is comprised of TiO\textsubscript{2}, TiO\textsubscript{\emph{x}} and ZrO\textsubscript{\emph{x}}, as determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy by short-term ion-etching of the surface layer. The two orders of magnitude increase in the oxide and interface resistance (from 14 to 1257 {\textOmega} cm\textsuperscript{2}) along with an order of magnitude decrease in the capacitance parameter of the oxide interface (from 1.402 x 10\textsuperscript{\textminus5} to 1.677 x 10\textsuperscript{\textminus6} S s\textsuperscript{n} cm\textsuperscript{\textminus2}) of the same composition is linked to the formation of carbonyl groups and reduction of the native oxide layer during linear sweep voltammetry.

Identifying modulation formats using integrated clustering algorithm

Modulation format identification (MFI) is crucial in next-generation optical networks such as cognitive optical networks. An integrated-clustering-algorithm-based MFI scheme in a coherent optical communication system is proposed herein. Numerical simulations are performed to test the performance of the scheme on the platform of a polarization domain multiplexing system at a symbol rate of 28 Gbaud. Simulations show that the MFI scheme can achieve an accuracy of 100% for five modulation formats considered in this study when the optical signal-to-noise ratio values are lower than the 7% forward error correction threshold. Tolerances to residual chromatic dispersion (CD) are discussed, and the results show that the proposed scheme can perform well as the residual CD changes over a wide range of values. Moreover, by selecting a number of key blocks, the proposed scheme is less complex than other clustering-based MFI schemes.
