Coherent seeding and control of dynamical ferroelectricity by phonon anharmonicity

Optical control of quantum materials has progressed along two separate directions: creating non-equilibrium states inaccessible at equilibrium, and coherently controlling ultrafast dynamics with multi-pulse protocols. Ferroelectricity is especially attractive in this context because its order parameter, macroscopic polarization, directly links inversion-symmetry breaking to functional response. Yet light-induced ferroelectricity has so far been confined to quantum paraelectrics near the ferroelectric instability, where critical fluctuations obscure the formation of a homogeneous ferroelectric state and complicate its deterministic coherent control. Unifying these capabilities -- preparing a symmetry-broken state and then coherently steering its functionality -- remains a central challenge. Here we show that intense terahertz excitation of a soft phonon mode induces a ferroelectric state in centrosymmetric PbTe, a thermoelectric material with strong lattice anharmonicity but no ferroelectric transition at finite temperature. The light-induced symmetry-broken state can be realized up to about 100 K, without relying on local dipolar fluctuations. Experiment and theory together reveal that terahertz-driven anharmonic coupling between degenerate transverse optical phonons underlies this ferroelectric induction. Furthermore, we demonstrate coherent amplification and suppression of the induced polarization via a double-pulse-excitation protocol. These results establish terahertz-driven anharmonic mode coupling as a general strategy for controlling mode-mediated functionalities in quantum materials, opening a route to ultrafast information processing.

Multimodal Terahertz Spectroscopy of the Pairing Symmetry and Normal-State Pseudogap in (La,Pr)$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ Films

The discovery of ambient-pressure superconductivity in compressively strained (La,Pr)$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin films has intensified efforts to identify the pairing mechanism. However, the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter and the character of the normal state remain unsettled. Here we combine bulk-sensitive terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy with THz third-harmonic generation to present spectroscopic insights into these issues. Linear THz spectroscopy reveals a bulk superconducting response in the (La,Pr)$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ films, evidenced by the suppression of low-frequency spectral weight below the onset critical temperature, $T_\mathrm{c}^{\mathrm{onset}}$. A weak coherence peak near $T_\mathrm{c}^{\mathrm{onset}}$, together with substantial residual low-frequency conductivity as $T\to 0$, is consistent with disordered $s_{\pm}$-wave pairing. In the nonlinear regime, the third-harmonic signal rises sharply on cooling through $T_\mathrm{c}^{\mathrm{onset}}$, providing an independent signature of the transition. Strikingly, the nonlinear response persists above $T_\mathrm{c}^{\mathrm{onset}}$, pointing to either disorder-enhanced nonlinearity or a distinct correlated normal state. Motivated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on similarly grown films that identifies a comparable temperature scale, we associate the anomalous normal-state terahertz nonlinearity with a pseudogap. These results establish (La,Pr)$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ as a bulk superconductor with $s_{\pm}$-like pairing that coexists with, and may compete with, a distinct ordered state, providing a platform for exploring unconventional superconductivity beyond cuprates and pnictides.

Reconciling strange metal transport in CeCoIn$_5$ through the difference of optical and cyclotron effective masses

The strange metal behavior in cuprate superconductors - characterized by linear in temperature resistivity and anomalous Hall transport - stands in stark contrast to the expectation of conventional Fermi liquid (FL) theory. Remarkably, the similar transport behavior has also been observed in the heavy fermion metal CeCoIn$_5$, whose d-wave superconducting ground state and strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations draw parallels to the cuprates. Here we have investigated the optical conductivity of the strange metal state of CeCoIn$_5$ over a wide magnetic field range using time-domain THz spectroscopy (TDTS). Using unique high-field THz spectroscopy we have shown that the current relaxation rate scales approximately as T$^2$, giving evidence for a hidden Fermi liquid state over a large field range. This result can be reconciled with linear in T resistivity with the realization that heavy quasiparticles have an optical mass that scales roughly like 1/T. This optical mass contrasts with the mass that characterizes cyclotron motion, which does not suffer the same large temperature dependent renormalization. Although by itself anomalous, this allows one to understand a number of other phenomena in CeCoIn$_5$ that have been taken to be signatures of strange metals, including the coexistence of a conventional T$^2$ dependence of the cotangent of the Hall angle with the linear in T resistivity, which with our observation also reflects FL-like physics.

Phase Diagram and Spectroscopic Signatures of a Supersolid in Quantum Ising Magnet K$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$

A supersolid is a quantum-entangled state of matter exhibiting the dual characteristics of superfluidity and solidity. Theory predicts that hard-core bosons with repulsive interactions on a triangular lattice can form supersolid phases at half filling and near complete filling. Leveraging an exact mapping between bosons and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ degrees of freedom, we investigate these phases in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet \K212 with exchange constants $J_z = 2.96(2)$~meV and $J_{\perp} = 0.21(3)$~meV. At zero field, neutron diffraction reveals the gradual development for $T<15$~K of quasi-two-dimensional $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ magnetic order with $Z_3$ translational symmetry breaking (solidity) albeit with 44(5)% reduced amplitude at $T=0.3$~K indicating strong quantum fluctuations. These are apparent in equidistant bands of continuum neutron scattering for $\hslashω_n\approx n\times J_z$, where $n=0,1,2,3$. The lowest energy ($n=0$) $\bf Q$-dependent continuum has a lower resonant edge and includes a quasi-elastic component at K $(\frac{1}{3}\frac{1}{3})$ consistent with broken $U(1)$ spin rotational symmetry (boson superfluidity). Competing instabilities are apparent in soft albeit finite-energy modes at M $(\frac{1}{2}0)$ and at $\frac{1}{2}$K $(\frac{1}{6}\frac{1}{6})$. For $\bf c$-axis-oriented magnetic fields $17~{\rm T} <μ_0 H< 21~{\rm T}$ that almost saturate the magnetization, corresponding to nearly filling the lattice with bosons, we find a new phase consistent with a second supersolid. These phases are separated by a pronounced 1/3 magnetization plateau that supports coherent spin waves, from which we determine the spin Hamiltonian.

Anomalous terahertz nonlinearity in disordered s-wave superconductor close to the superconductor-insulator transition

Detection of the Higgs mode in superconductors using nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy is a key area of interest in condensed matter physics. We investigate the influence of disorder on the nonlinear terahertz response and the Higgs mode in NbN thin films with varying Ioffe-Regel parameters ($k_Fl$). In strongly disordered films near the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT), we observe an anomalous third-harmonic generation (THG) signal above $T_c$, which is absent in both cleaner superconducting and non-superconducting counterparts. The persistence of this normal-state THG signal in a high magnetic field excludes superconducting fluctuations as its origin. Below $T_c$, the THG intensity increases sharply, indicating a dominant contribution from the driven Higgs mode. The THG spectrum of the strongly disordered sample exhibits a broadened, multi-peak structure, which we attribute to quantum path interference between distinct channels involving unpaired electrons and Cooper pairs within emergent superconducting islands. Our findings not only demonstrate how disorder tunes the nonlinear terahertz response but also uncover a strong coupling between electrons responsible for normal-state THG and the superconducting Higgs mode below $T_c$ in strongly disordered samples.

Field-induced spin continuum in twin-free Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ revealed by magneto-THz spectroscopy

The honeycomb magnet Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ recently emerged as a promising candidate for realizing Kitaev quantum spin liquid with relatively low levels of structural disorder. While the precise spin Hamiltonian remains controversial, the potential existence of a quantum spin liquid or other novel quantum magnetic phases continues to stimulate investigation. Here, we study the temperature and magnetic field-dependent spin excitations of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ on a twin-free single crystal using magneto-terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, focusing on magnetic anisotropy and field-induced unusual phases. We observe a low-energy continuum excitation above $T_N$ and a 0.5 THz (2 meV) spin wave excitation in magnetic order under zero field. Upon applying an in-plane magnetic field, the spin waves transform to a magnetic continuum over an intermediate field range, above which the system enters a spin-polarized state. Crucially, the spin excitation spectra reveal striking anisotropy between the $\textbf{a}$ and $\textbf{b}$ crystallographic axes, demanding description by a strongly anisotropic spin model. These findings establish Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ as a model system for investigating field-tunable quantum magnetism and potential spin liquid behavior in highly anisotropic systems.

Selective excitation of collective modes in multiband superconductor MgB2

Recent developments in nonequilibrium and nonlinear terahertz (THz) spectroscopies have significantly advanced our understanding of collective excitations in superconductors. However, there is still debate surrounding the identification of Higgs or Leggett modes, as well as BCS charge fluctuations, in the well-known two-band superconductor MgB$_2$. Here, we utilized both multi-cycle and single-cycle THz pump-broadband THz probe techniques to investigate the THz nonlinear response of MgB$_2$. Through multicycle THz pump-THz probe experiments on MgB$_2$, we observed distinct nonlinear signals at both the fundamental frequency ($ω$) and the second harmonic frequency (2$ω$) of the pump pulses, which exhibited resonant enhancement at temperatures where their frequencies respectively match 2$Δ_π(T)$. They are mainly attributed to the $π$-band Higgs mode. By adjusting the THz pump pulse to a single-cycle waveform that satisfies non-adiabatic excitation criteria, we observed an over-damped oscillation corresponding to the Leggett mode. Our findings contribute to solving the ongoing debates and demonstrate the selective excitation of collective modes in multiband superconductors, offering new insights into the interaction between Higgs and Leggett modes.

Timely detection of cancer in its early stages is essential for treating the disease. Currently, there is a lack of datasets for histopathological image segmentation of rectal cancer, which often hampers the assessment accuracy when computer technology is used to aid in diagnosis. Methods: This present study provided a new publicly available Enteroscope Biopsy Histopathological Hematoxylin and Eosin Image Dataset for Image Segmentation Tasks (EBHI-Seg). To demonstrate the validity and extensiveness of EBHI-Seg, the experimental results for EBHI-Seg are evaluated using classical machine learning methods and deep learning methods. Results: The experimental results showed that deep learning methods had a better image segmentation performance when utilizing EBHI-Seg. The maximum accuracy of the Dice evaluation metric for the classical machine learning method is 0.948, while the Dice evaluation metric for the deep learning method is 0.965. Conclusion: This publicly available dataset contained 5,170 images of six types of tumor differentiation stages and the corresponding ground truth images. The dataset can provide researchers with new segmentation algorithms for medical diagnosis of colorectal cancer, which can be used in the clinical setting to help doctors and patients.

Strong nonlinear optical response and transient symmetry switching in Type-II Weyl semimetal $β$-WP2

The topological Weyl semimetals with peculiar band structure exhibit novel nonlinear optical enhancement phenomena even for light at optical wavelengths. While many intriguing nonlinear optical effects were constantly uncovered in type-I semimetals, few experimental works focused on basic nonlinear optical properties in type-II Weyl semimetals. Here we perform a fundamental static and time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) on the three dimensional Type-II Weyl semimetal candidate $β$-WP$_2$. Although $β$-WP$_2$ exhibits extremely high conductivity and an extraordinarily large mean free path, the second harmonic generation is unscreened by conduction electrons, we observed rather strong SHG response compared to non-topological polar metals and archetypal ferroelectric insulators. Additionally, our time-resolved SHG experiment traces ultrafast symmetry switching and reveals that polar metal $β$-WP$_2$ tends to form inversion symmetric metastable state after photo-excitation. Intense femtosecond laser pulse could optically drive symmetry switching and tune nonlinear optical response on ultrafast timescales although the interlayer coupling of $β$-WP$_2$ is very strong. Our work is illuminating for the polar metal nonlinear optics and potential ultrafast topological optoelectronic applications.
