Fatness and positive curvatures on Riemannian submersions

Guided by rather counterintuitive properties of \emph{dual holonomy fields}, we introduce different notions of \emph{fatness} for Riemannian submersions. We introduce \emph{integral fatness} as an intrinsic condition implied by positive sectional curvature; \emph{sub-fatness} as a rigidity constraint that naturally arises in \emph{canonical variation} limits; and then develop the concept of \emph{weakly nonnegative curvature} (WNN), an intrinsic condition depending only on the horizontal distribution and the base metric. Positive sectional curvature implies fatness in this class, verifying Petersen--Wilhelm's Conjecture for homogeneous submersions and beyond. Finally, we introduce the notion of Riemannian submersion which are \emph{$A$-Clifford}: we show that them, like fatness and WNN, is intrinsic to the pair $(\mathcal H,b)$; that it singles out a canonical vertical gauge; and that in rank three it characterizes $3$-Sasakian geometry, yielding rigidity on $\mathrm{S}^3,\mathrm{SO}(3)$-principal bundles.

The $G$-equivariant Kazdan--Warner problem

We establish an equivariant analogue of the Kazdan--Warner trichotomy for admissible scalar curvature functions. Let $M$ be a closed connected manifold of dimension $n \ge 3$ equipped with an effective isometric action of a compact connected Lie group $G$ of cohomogeneity at least one and with no zero-dimensional orbits. All metrics and prescribed functions are taken to be $G$-invariant. We prove that, for such pairs $(M, G)$, the classical trichotomy does not extend verbatim. A distinct class emerges, consisting of \emph{totally $G$-positive} pairs, for which every $G$-invariant metric exhibits positive total scalar curvature. Each such pair admits a $G$-invariant metric of positive constant scalar curvature, but admits no metric of zero or negative constant scalar curvature. Every remaining pair falls into exactly one of three classes mirroring the original trichotomy.

The curvature of convex sum of metrics and applications

In this note, we derive explicit formulae for the curvature of a convex sum of Riemannian metrics, \(g_t = (1-t)g_0 + t g_1\). We study whether such a deformation can increase the \emph{average} of the Riemann curvature component \(R_t(X,Y,Y,X)\) along an immersed, totally geodesic flat torus. Because a first-order increase is prohibited, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for \(g_t\) to have a positive average variation of order \(r \geq 2\). These conditions are applied to paths joining \(g_0\) to classical metric deformations, including conformal changes, vertical warpings, and Cheeger deformations.

Hearing Exotic Smooth Structures

This paper explores the existence and properties of \emph{basic} eigenvalues and eigenfunctions associated with the Riemannian Laplacian on closed, connected Riemannian manifolds featuring an effective isometric action by a compact Lie group. Our primary focus is on investigating the potential existence of homeomorphic yet not diffeomorphic smooth manifolds that can accommodate invariant metrics sharing common basic spectra. We establish the occurrence of such scenarios for specific homotopy spheres and connected sums. Moreover, the developed theory demonstrates that the ring of invariant admissible scalar curvature functions fails to recover the smooth structure in many examples. We show the existence of homotopy spheres with identical rings of invariant scalar curvature functions, irrespective of the underlying smooth structure.

Positive Ricci curvature through Cheeger deformations

This paper is devoted to a deep analysis of the process known as Cheeger deformation, applied to manifolds with isometric group actions. Here, we provide new curvature estimates near singular orbits and present several applications. As the main result, we answer a question raised by a seminal result of Searle--Wilhelm about lifting positive Ricci curvature from the quotient of an isometric action. To answer this question, we develop techniques that can be used to provide a substantially streamlined version of a classical result of Lawson and Yau, generalize a curvature condition of Chavéz, Derdzinski, and Rigas, as well as, give an alternative proof of a result of Grove and Ziller.

The concept of Cheeger deformations on fiber bundles with compact structure group

The purpose of this paper is two-fold: we systematically introduce the notion of Cheeger deformations on fiber bundles with compact structure groups, and recover in a very simple and unified fashion several results that either already appear in the literature or are known by experts, though are not explicitly written elsewhere. We re-prove: Schwachhöfer--Tuschmann Theorem on bi-quotients, many results due to Fukaya and Yamaguchi, as well as, naturally extend the work of Searle--Solórzano--Wilhelm on regularization properties of Cheeger deformations, among others. In this sense, this paper should be understood as a survey intended to demonstrate the power of Cheeger deformations. Even though some of the results here appearing may not be known as stated in the presented form, they were already expected, being our contribution to the standardization and spread of the technique via a unique language.

On the embeddability of the homogeneous Ricci flow and its collapses

This article grew out of the urge to realize explicit examples of solutions for the Ricci flow as families of isometrically embedded submanifolds, together with its Gromov-Hausdorff collapses. To this aim, we consider the Ricci flow of invariant metrics in a class of flag manifolds. On the one hand, we contrast with a previous result in literature by presenting entire flow lines of invariant metrics realized as orbits of a fixed representation. Indeed, we prove that the subset of realizable metrics has a global attractor with open interior, containing an expressive family of complete flow lines. On the other hand, we prove that certain collapses cannot be realized in any fixed Euclidean space. We provide a detailed picture of the flow, including examples of both realizable and non-realizable flow lines and collapses.

The projected homogeneous Ricci flow and three-isotropy-summands flag manifolds

The Ricci flow was introduced by Hamilton and gained its importance through the years. Of special importance is the limiting behavior of the flow and its symmetry properties. Taking this into account, we present a novel normalization for the homogeneous Ricci flow with natural compactness properties. In addition, we present a characterization for Gromov-Hausdorff limits of homogeneous spaces. As a result, we present a detailed picture of the homogeneous Ricci flow for three-isotropy-summands flag manifolds: phase portraits, basins of attractions, conjugation classes and collapsing phenomena. Moreover, we achieve a full classification of the possible Gromov-Hausdorff limits of the aforementioned lines of flow.

Totally Geodesic Riemannian Foliations on Compact Lie Groups

In 86, Ranjan questioned whether a submersion $π: G\to B$ from a compact simple Lie group with bi-invariant metric is a coset foliation or not, provided the submersion is Riemannian with totally geodesic fibers. Here we answer this question affirmatively, even when the submersion is defined only in an open subset of $G$ (assuming suitable hypothesis).

Metric Foliations on the Euclidean Space

We complete a minor gap in Gromoll and Walschap classification of metric fibrations from the Euclidean space, thus completing the classification of Riemannian foliations on Euclidean spaces.

On the geometry of some Equivariantly related manifolds

We provide a topological procedure to obtain geometric realizations of both classical and `exotic' $G$-manifolds, such as spheres, bundles over spheres and Kervaire manifolds. As an application, we apply the process known as Cheeger deformations to produce new metrics of both positive Ricci and almost non-negative curvature on such objects.

An intrinsic curvature condition for submersions over Riemannian manifolds

Let $π{:}\,(M,\mathcal{H})\to (B,b)$ be a submersion equipped with a horizontal connection $\cal H$ over a Riemannian manifold $(B,b)$. We present an intrinsic curvature condition that only depends on the pair $(\cal H,b)$. By studying a set of relative flat planes, we prove that a certain class of pairs $(\cal H,b)$ admits a compatible metric with positive sectional curvature only if they are \textit{fat}, verifying Wilhelm's Conjecture in this class.
