Optical absorption of semiconductor 2D Majorana nanowires

We calculate the cross section for optical absorption of planar 2D Majorana nanowires. Light is described in the dipole approximation. We discuss the signatures on the cross section of a near-zero-energy mode. A low energy peak for transverse polarization, absent in longitudinal one, reveals the presence of the Majorana-like state. This peak is relatively robust against thermal smearing of the level occupations. We consider the influence of optical masks hiding parts of the nanowire from the light.

Negative Tunneling Magneto-Resistance in Quantum Wires with Strong Spin-Orbit Coupling

We consider a two-dimensional magnetic tunnel junction of the FM/I/QW(FM+SO)/I/N structure, where FM, I and QW(FM+SO) stand for a ferromagnet, an insulator and a quantum wire (QW) with both magnetic ordering and Rashba spin-orbit (SOC), respectively. The tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR) exhibits strong anisotropy and switches sign as the polarization direction varies relative to the QW axis, due to interplay among the one-dimensionality, the magnetic ordering, and the strong SOC of the QW. The results may provide a possible explanation for the sign-switching anisotropic TMR recently observed in the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface.

Snaking states on a cylindrical surface in a perpendicular magnetic field

We calculate electronic states on a closed cylindrical surface as a model of a core-shell nanowire. The length of the cylinder can be infinite or finite. We define cardinal points on the circumference of the cylinder and consider a spatially uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the cylinder axis,in the direction South-North. The orbital motion of the electrons depends on the radial component of the field which is not uniform around the circumference: it is equal to the total field at North and South, but vanishes at the West and East sides. For a strong field, when the magnetic length is comparable to the radius of the cylinder, the electronic states at North and South become localized cyclotron orbits, whereas at East and West the states become long and narrow snaking orbits propagating along the cylinder. The energy of the cyclotron states increases with the magnetic field whereas the energy of the snaking states is stable. Consequently, at high magnetic fields the electron density vanishes at North and South and concentrates at East and West. We include spin-orbit interaction with linear Rashba and Dresselhaus models. For a cylinder of finite length the Dresselhaus interaction produces an axial twist of the charge density relative to the center of the wire, which may be amplified in the presence of the Rashba interaction.

Thermoelectrical detection of Majorana states

We discuss the thermoelectrical properties of nanowires hosting Majorana edge states. For a Majorana nanowire directly coupled to two normal reservoirs the thermopower always vanishes regardeless of the value of the Majorana hybridization. This situation changes drastically if we insert a quantum dot. Then, the dot Majorana side coupled system exhibits a different behavior for the thermopower depending on the Majorana hybridization parameter. Thermopower reverses its sign when the half fermionic state is fully developed. As long as the hybridization becomes finite the Seebeck coefficient behaves similarly to a resonant level system. The sign change of the thermopower when Majorana physics takes place and the fact that both, the electrical and thermal conductances reach, their half fermionic value could serve as a proof of the existence of Majorana edge states in nanowires. Finally, we perform some predictions about the gate dependence of the Seebeck coefficient when Kondo correlations are present in the dot.

Majorana modes in smooth normal-superconductor nanowire junctions

A numerical method to obtain the spectrum of smooth normal-superconductor junctions in nanowires, able to host Majorana zero modes, is presented. Softness in the potential and superconductor interfaces yields opposite effects on the protection of Majorana modes. While a soft potential is a hindrance for protection, a soft superconductor gap transition greatly favors it. Our method also points out the possibility of extended Majorana states when propagating modes are active far from the junction, although this requires equal incident fluxes in all open channels.

Magnetic-field instability of Majorana modes in multiband quantum wires

We investigate the occurrence of Majorana modes in semiconductor quantum wires in close proximity with a superconductor and when both, Rashba interaction and magnetic field, are present. We consider long, but finite, multiband wires (namely, planar wires with dimensions $L_x\gg L_y$). Our results demonstrate that interband mixing coming from Rashba spin orbit term hybridizes Majorana pairs originating from different transverse modes while simultaneously closing the effective gap. Consequently, multiple Majorana modes do not coexist in general. On the contrary, Majorana physics is robust provided that only one single transverse mode contributes with a Majorana pair. Finally, we analyse the robustness of Majorana physics with respect to magnetic orbital effects.

Transport through Majorana nanowires attached to normal leads

This paper presents a coupled channel model for transport in 2D semiconductor Majorana nanowires coupled to normal leads. When the nanowire hosts a zero mode, conspicuous signatures on the linear conductance are predicted. An effective model in second quantization allowing a fully analytical solution is used to clarify the physics. We also discuss the nonlinear current response ($dI/dV$)

Thermoelectric transport of mesoscopic conductors coupled to voltage and thermal probes

We investigate basic properties of the thermopower (Seebeck coefficient) of phase-coherent conductors under the influence of dephasing and inelastic processes. Transport across the system is caused by a voltage bias or a thermal gradient applied between two terminals. Inelastic scattering is modeled with the aid of an additional probe acting as an ideal potentiometer and thermometer. We find that inelastic scattering reduces the conductor's thermopower and, more unexpectedly, generates a magnetic-field asymmetry in the Seebeck coefficient. The latter effect is shown to be a higher-order effect in the Sommerfeld expansion. We discuss our result using two illustrative examples. First, we consider a generic mesoscopic system described within random matrix theory and demonstrate that thermopower fluctuations disappear quickly as the number of probe modes increases. Second, the asymmetry is explicitly calculated in the quantum limit of a ballistic microjunction. We find that asymmetric scattering strongly enhances the effect and discuss its dependence on temperature and Fermi energy.

g-Factor anisotropy of hole quantum wires induced by the Rashba interaction

We present calculations of the g factors for the lower conductance steps of 3D hole quantum wires. Our results prove that the anisotropy with magnetic field orientation, relative to the wire, originates in the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We also analyze the relevance of the deformation, as the wire evolves from 3D towards a flat 2D geometry. For high enough wire deformations, the perpendicular g factors are greatly quenched by the Rashba interaction. On the contrary, parallel g factors are rather insensistive to the Rashba interaction, resulting in a high g factor anisotropy. For low deformations we find a more irregular behavior which hints at a sample dependent scenario.

Multichannel effects in Rashba quantum wires

We investigate intersubband mixing effects in multichannel quantum wires in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and attached to two terminals. When the contacts are ferromagnetic and their magnetization direction is perpendicular to the Rashba field, the spin-transistor current is expected to depend in a oscillatory way on the Rashba coupling strength due to spin coherent oscillations of the travelling electrons. Nevertheless, we find that the presence of many propagating modes strongly influences the spin precession effect, leading to (i) a quenching of the oscillations and (ii) strongly irregular curves for high values of the Rashba coupling. We also observe that in the case of leads' magnetization parallel to the Rashba field, the conductance departs from a uniform value as the Rashba strength increases. We also discuss the Rashba interaction induced current polarization effects when the contacts are not magnetic and investigate how this mechanism is affected by the presence of several propagating channels.

Conductance of tubular nanowires with disorder

We calculate the conductance of tubular-shaped nanowires having many potential scatterers at random positions. Our approach is based on the scattering matrix formalism and our results analyzed within the scaling theory of disordered conductors. When increasing the energy the conductance for a big enough number of impurities in the tube manifests a systematic evolution from the localized to the metallic regimes. Nevertheless, a conspicuous drop in conductance is predicted whenever a new transverse channel is open. Comparison with the semiclassical calculation leading to purely ohmic behavior is made.

Localized magnetic states in Rashba dots

We study the formation of local moments in quantum dots arising in quasi-one dimensional electron wires due to localized spin-orbit (Rashba) interaction. Using an Anderson-like model to describe the occurrence of the magnetic moments in these Rashba dots, we calculate the local magnetization within the mean-field approximation. We find that the magnetization becomes a nontrivial function of the Rashba coupling strength. We discuss both the equilibrium and nonequilibrium cases. Interestingly, we obtain a magnetic phase which is stable at large bias due to the Rashba interaction.

From Coulomb blockade to the Kondo regime in a Rashba dot

We investigate the electronic transport in a quantum wire with localized Rashba interaction. The Rashba field forms quasi-bound states which couple to the continuum states with an opposite spin direction. The presence of this Rashba dot causes Fano-like antiresonances and dips in the wire's linear conductance. The Fano lineshape arises from the interference between the direct transmission channel along the wire and the hopping through the Rashba dot. Due to the confinement, we predict the observation of large charging energies in the local Rashba region which lead to Coulomb-blockade effects in the transport properties of the wire. Importantly, the Kondo regime can be achieved with a proper tuning of the Rashba interaction, giving rise to an oscillating linear conductance for a fixed occupation of the Rashba dot.

Strongly modulated transmission of a spin-split quantum wire with local Rashba interaction

We investigate the transport properties of ballistic quantum wires in the presence of Zeeman spin splittings and a spatially inhomogeneous Rashba interaction. The Zeeman interaction is extended along the wire and produces gaps in the energy spectrum which allow electron propagation only for spinors lying along a certain direction. For spins in the opposite direction the waves are evanescent far away from the Rashba region, which plays the role of the scattering center. The most interesting case occurs when the magnetic field is perpendicular to the Rashba field. Then, the spins of the asymptotic wavefunctions are not eigenfunctions of the Rashba Hamiltonian and the resulting coupling between spins in the Rashba region gives rise to sudden changes of the transmission probability when the Fermi energy is swept along the gap. After briefly examining the energy spectrum and eigenfunctions of a wire with extended Rashba coupling, we analyze the transmission through a region of localized Rashba interaction, in which a double interface separates a region of constant Rashba interaction from wire leads free from spin-orbit coupling. For energies slightly above the propagation threshold, we find the ubiquitous occurrence of transmission zeros (antiresonances) which are analyzed by matching methods in the one-dimensional limit. We find that a a minimal tight-binding model yields analytical transmission lineshapes of Fano antiresonance type. More general angular dependences of the external magnetic field is treated within projected Schroedinger equations with Hamiltonian matrix elements mixing wavefunction components. Finally, we consider a realistic quantum wire where the energy subbands are coupled via the Rashba intersubband coupling term and discuss its effect on the transmission zeros.

Evanescent states in quantum wires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We discuss the calculation of evanescent states in quasi-one-dimensional quantum wires in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We suggest a computational algorithm devised for cases in which longitudinal and transverse motions are coupled. The dispersion relations are given for some selected cases, illustrating the feasibility of the proposed computational method. As a practical application, we discuss the solutions for a wire containing a potential step.

The Fano-Rashba effect

We analyze the linear conductance of a semiconductor quantum wire containing a region where a local Rashba spin-orbit interaction is present. We show that Fano lineshapes appear in the conductance due to the formation of quasi bound states which interfere with the direct transmission along the wire, a mechanism that we term the Fano-Rashba effect. We obtain the numerical solution of the full Schrödinger equation using the quantum-transmitting-boundary method. The theoretical analysis is performed using the coupled-channel model, finding an analytical solution by ansatz. The complete numerical solution of the coupled-channel equations is also discussed, showing the validity of the ansatz approach.

Fano-Rashba effect in a quantum wire

We predict the occurrence of Fano lineshapes in a semiconductor quantum wire with local spin-orbit (Rashba) coupling. We show that the Rashba interaction acts in a strictly one dimensional channel as an attractive impurity, leading to the formation of purely bound states. In a quasi-one dimensional system these bound states couple to the conduction ones through the Rashba intersubband mixing, giving rise to pronounced dips in the linear conductance plateaus. We give exact numerical results and propose an approximate model capturing the main ingredients of the effect.

Rashba interaction in quantum wires with in-plane magnetic fields

We analyze the spectral and transport properties of ballistic quasi one-dimensional systems in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and in-plane agnetic fields. Our results demonstrate that Rashba precession and intersubband coupling must be treated on equal footing for wavevectors near the magnetic field induced gaps. We find that intersubband coupling limits the occurrence of negative effective masses at the gap edges and modifies the linear conductance curves in the strong coupling limit. The effect of the magnetic field on the spin textured orientation of the wire magnetization is discussed.
