Light localization in nonuniformly randomized lattices

We address Anderson localization of light in disordered optical lattices where the disorder strength varies across the transverse direction. Such variation changes the preferred domains where formation of localized eigenmodes is most probable, hence drastically impacting light localization properties. Thus, step-like disorder results in formation of modes with different decay rates at both sides of the interface, while a smoothly varying disorder yields appearance of modes that are extended within weakly disordered domains and rapidly fade away in strongly disordered domains.

Self-trapping and splitting of bright vector solitons under inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinearities

We show that bimodal systems with a spatially nonuniform defocusing cubic nonlinearity, whose strength grows toward the periphery, can support stable two-component solitons. For a sufficiently strong XPM interaction, vector solitons with overlapping components become unstable, while stable families of solitons with spatially separated components emerge. Stable complexes with separated components may be composed not only of fundamental solitons, but of multipoles too.

Vortex twins and anti-twins supported by multi-ring gain landscapes

We address the properties of multi-vortex soliton complexes supported by multi-ring gain landscapes in focusing Kerr nonlinear media with strong two-photon absorption. Stable complexes incorporating two, three, or four vortices featuring opposite or identical topological charges are shown to exist. In the simplest geometries with two amplifying rings vortex twins with equal topological charges exhibit asymmetric intensity distributions, while vortex anti-twins may be symmetric or asymmetric, depending on the gain level and separation between rings. Different arrangements of amplifying rings allow generation of stable multi-vortex soliton complexes with various topologies, with twins and anti-twins as building blocks.

Bright solitons from defocusing nonlinearities

We report that defocusing cubic media with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearity, whose strength increases rapidly enough toward the periphery, can support stable bright localized modes. Such nonlinearity landscapes give rise to a variety of stable solitons in all three dimensions, including 1D fundamental and multihump states, 2D vortex solitons with arbitrarily high topological charges, and fundamental solitons in 3D. Solitons maintain their coherence in the state of motion, oscillating in the nonlinear potential as robust quasi-particles and colliding elastically. In addition to numerically found soliton families, particular solutions are found in an exact analytical form, and accurate approximations are developed for the entire families, including moving solitons.

Algebraic bright and vortex solitons in defocusing media

We demonstrate that spatially inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinear landscapes with the nonlinearity coefficient growing toward the periphery as [1+abs(r)]**a support one- and two-dimensional fundamental and higher-order bright solitons, as well as vortex solitons, with algebraically decaying tails. The energy flow of the solitons converges as long as nonlinearity growth rate exceeds the dimensionality, i.e., a>D. Fundamental solitons are always stable, while multipoles and vortices are stable if the nonlinearity growth rate is large enough.

Solitons in geometric potentials

We show that the geometrically-induced potential existing in undulated slab waveguides dramatically affects the properties of solitons. In particular, whereas solitons residing in the potential maxima do not feature power thresholds and are stable, their counterparts residing in the potential minima are unstable and may exhibit a power threshold for their existence. Additionally, the geometric potential is shown to supports stable multipole solitons that cannot be supported by straight waveguides. Finally, the geometric potential results in the appearance of the effective barriers that prevent transverse soliton motion.

General quasi-non-spreading linear three-dimensional wave-packets

We introduce a general approach for generation of sets of three-dimensional quasi-non-spreading wavepackets propagating in linear media, also referred to as linear light bullets. The spectrum of rigorously non-spreading wavepackets in media with anomalous group velocity dispersion is localized on the surface of a sphere, thus drastically restricting the possible wavepacket shapes. However, broadening slightly the spectrum affords the generation of a large variety of quasi-non-spreading distributions featuring complex topologies and shapes in space and time that are of interest in different areas, such as biophysics or nanosurgery. Here we discuss the method and show several illustrative examples of its potential.

Stripe-like quasi-nondiffracting optical lattices

We introduce stripe-like quasi-nondiffracting lattices that can be generated via spatial spectrum engineering. The complexity of the spatial shapes of such lattices and the distance of their almost diffractionless propagation depend on the width of their ring-like spatial spectrum. Stripe-like lattices are extended in one direction and are localized in the orthogonal one, thereby creating either straight or curved in any desired fashion optically-induced channels that may be used for optical trapping, optical manipulation, or optical lattices for quantum and nonlinear optics applications. As an illustrative example, here we show their potential for spatial soliton control. Complex networks consisting of several intersecting or joining stripe-like lattices suited to a particular application may also be constructed.

Rotating vortex solitons supported by localized gain

We show that ring-like localized gain landscapes imprinted in focusing cubic (Kerr) nonlinear media with strong two-photon absorption support new types of stable higher-order vortex solitons containing multiple phase singularities nested inside a single core. The phase singularities are found to rotate around the center of the gain landscape, with the rotation period being determined by the strength of the gain and the nonlinear absorption.

Disorder-induced soliton transmission in nonlinear photonic lattices

We address soliton transmission and reflection in nonlinear photonic lattices embedded into uniform Kerr nonlinear media. We show that by introducing disorder into the guiding lattice channels, one may achieve soliton transmission even under conditions where regular lattices reflect the input beam completely. In contrast, in the parameter range where the lattice is almost transparent for incoming solitons, disorder may induce a significant reflection.

Three-Dimensional Light Bullets in Arrays of Waveguides

We report the first experimental observation of 3D-LBs, excited by femtosecond pulses in a system featuring quasi-instantaneous cubic nonlinearity and a periodic, transversally-modulated refractive index. Stringent evidence of the excitation of LBs is based on time-gated images and spectra which perfectly match our numerical simulations. Furthermore, we reveal a novel evolution mechanism forcing the LBs to follow varying dispersion/diffraction conditions, until they leave their existence range and decay.

Radially symmetric and azimuthally modulated vortex solitons supported by localized gain

We discover that a spatially localized gain supports stable vortex solitons in media with cubic nonlinearity and two-photon absorption. The interplay between nonlinear losses and gain in amplifying rings results in suppression of otherwise ubiquitous azimuthal modulation instabilities of radially symmetric vortex solitons. We uncover that the topology of the gain profile imposes restrictions on the maximal possible charge of vortex solitons. Symmetry breaking occurs at high gain levels resulting in the formation of necklace vortex solitons composed of asymmetric bright spots.

Solitons in nonlinear lattices

This article offers a comprehensive survey of results obtained for solitons and complex nonlinear wave patterns supported by purely nonlinear lattices (NLs), which represent a spatially periodic modulation of the local strength and sign of the nonlinearity, and their combinations with linear lattices. A majority of the results obtained, thus far, in this field and reviewed in this article are theoretical. Nevertheless, relevant experimental settings are surveyed too, with emphasis on perspectives for implementation of the theoretical predictions in the experiment. Physical systems discussed in the review belong to the realms of nonlinear optics (including artificial optical media, such as photonic crystals, and plasmonics) and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). The solitons are considered in one, two, and three dimensions (1D, 2D, and 3D). Basic properties of the solitons presented in the review are their existence, stability, and mobility. Although the field is still far from completion, general conclusions can be drawn. In particular, a novel fundamental property of 1D solitons, which does not occur in the absence of NLs, is a finite threshold value of the soliton norm, necessary for their existence. In multidimensional settings, the stability of solitons supported by the spatial modulation of the nonlinearity is a truly challenging problem, for the theoretical and experimental studies alike. In both the 1D and 2D cases, the mechanism which creates solitons in NLs is principally different from its counterpart in linear lattices, as the solitons are created directly, rather than bifurcating from Bloch modes of linear lattices.

Bloch wavepacket control in truncated modulated optical lattices

We study the reflection of Bloch wavepackets at the interface of optical lattice possessing a shallow longitudinal out-of-phase refractive index modulation in adjacent waveguides. We show that the relation between the transmitted and reflected energy flows can be efficiently controlled by tuning the frequency and the depth of the modulation. Thus, complete beam reflection may be achieved for a set of resonant modulation frequencies at which light tunneling between adjacent guides of modulated lattice is inhibited.

Dissipative defect modes in periodic structures

We show that periodic optical lattices imprinted in cubic nonlinear media with strong two-photon absorption and localized linear gain landscapes support stable dissipative defect modes in both focusing and defocusing media. Their shapes and transverse extent are determined by the propagation constant that belongs to a gap of the lattice spectrum which, in turn, is determined by the relation between gain and losses. One-hump and two-hump dissipative defect modes are obtained.

Nonlinearity-mediated soliton ejection from trapping potentials in nonlocal media

We address the properties of optical solitons in thermal nonlinear media with a local refractive index defect that is capable to trap solitons launched even close to the sample boundary despite the boundary-mediated forces that tend to deflect all beams toward the center of the sample. We show that while such forces become more pronounced with increasing the input beam power the defect can trap only light below a critical power above which solitons are ejected. The dynamics of soliton ejection and the subsequent propagation may be controlled.

Spectral tunneling of lattice nonlocal solitons

We address spectral tunneling of walking spatial solitons in photorefractive media with nonlocal diffusion of the nonlinear response and an imprinted shallow optical lattice. In contrast to materials with local nonlinearities, where solitons travelling across the lattice close to the Bragg angle suffer large radiative losses, in photorefractive media with diffusion nonlinearity resulting in self-bending solitons survive when their propagation angle approaches and even exceeds the Bragg angle. In the spatial frequency domain this effect can be considered as tunneling through the band of spatial frequencies centered around the Bragg frequency where the spatial group velocity dispersion is positive.

Light bullets by synthetic diffraction-dispersion matching

We put forward a new approach to generate stable, fully three-dimensional light bullets, which is based on the matching of the intrinsic material dispersion with a suitable effective diffraction. The matching is achieved in adequate waveguide arrays whose refractive index is periodically modulated along the direction of light propagation. We show that by using non-conventional, out-of-phase longitudinal modulation of the refractive index of neighboring channels, it is possible to tune the effective diffraction to match the intrinsic material group velocity dispersion. Three-dimensional light bullets are shown to form at reduced energy levels, in settings where the dispersion would be far too weak to generate bullets in the absence of array.
