Fractional diffusion in convex domains and reflected isotropic stable processes

We establish the fractional diffusion limit of the kinetic scattering equation with diffusive boundary condition in a strongly convex bounded domain $\mathcal{D}\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. According to the nature of the boundary condition, two types of fractional heat equations may arise at the limit, corresponding to two types of isotropic stable processes reflected in $\mathcal{D}$. In both cases, when the process tries to jump across the boundary, it is stopped at the unique point where $\partial\mathcal{D}$ intersects the line segment defined by the attempted jump. It then leaves the boundary either continuously (for the first type) or by a power-law distributed jump (for the second type). The construction of these processes is done via an Itô synthesis: we concatenate their excursions in the domain, which are obtained by translating, rotating and stopping the excursions of some stable processes reflected in the half-space. The key ingredient in this procedure is the construction of the boundary processes, i.e. the processes time-changed by their local time on the boundary, which solve stochastic differential equations driven by some Poisson measures of excursions. The well-posedness of these boundary processes relies on delicate estimates involving some geometric inequalities and the laws of the undershoot and overshoot of the excursion when it leaves the domain. We show that these reflected Markov processes are Markov and Feller, we study their infinitesimal generator and we write down the reflected fractional heat equations satisfied by their time-marginals.

On joint returns to zero of Bessel processes

In this article, we consider joint returns to zero of $n$ Bessel processes ($n\geq 2$): our main goal is to estimate the probability that they avoid having joint returns to zero for a long time. More precisely, considering $n$ independent Bessel processes $(X_t^{(i)})_{1\leq i \leq n}$ of dimension $δ\in (0,1)$, we are interested in the first joint return to zero of any two of them: \[ H_n := \inf\big\{ t>0, \exists 1\leq i t) = t^{-θ_n+o(1)}$ as $t\to\infty$, and we provide some non-trivial bounds on $θ_n$. In particular, when $n=3$, we show that $2(1-δ)\leq θ_3 \leq 2 (1-δ) + f(δ)$ for some (explicit) function $f(δ)$ with $\sup_{[0,1]} f(δ) \approx 0.079$.

Brownian particles controlled by their occupation measure

In this article, we study a finite horizon linear-quadratic stochastic control problem for Brownian particles, where the cost functions depend on the state and the occupation measure of the particles. To address this problem, we develop an Itô formula for the flow of occupation measure, which enables us to derive the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. Then, thanks to a Feynman-Kac formula and the Boué-Dupuis formula, we construct an optimal strategy and an optimal trajectory. Finally, we illustrate our result when the cost-function is the volume of the sausage associated to the particles.

Fractional diffusion limit for a kinetic Fokker-Planck equation with diffusive boundary conditions in the half-line

We consider a particle living in $\mathbb{R}_+$, whose velocity is a positive recurrent diffusion with heavy-tailed invariant distribution when the particle lives in $(0,\infty)$. When it hits the boundary $x=0$, the particle restarts with a random strictly positive velocity. We show that the properly rescaled position process converges weakly to a stable process reflected on its infimum. From a P.D.E. point of view, the time-marginals of $(X_t, V_t)_{t\geq0}$ solve a kinetic Fokker-Planck equation on $(0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}_+ \times \mathbb{R}$ with diffusive boundary conditions. Properly rescaled, the space-marginal converges to the solution of some fractional heat equation on $(0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}_+$.

An application of Sparre Andersen's fluctuation theorem for exchangeable and sign-invariant random variables

We revisit here a famous result by Sparre Andersen on persistence probabilities $\mathbf{P}(S_k>0 \;\forall\, 0\leq k\leq n)$ for symmetric random walks $(S_n)_{n\geq 0}$. We give a short proof of this result when considering sums of random variables that are only assumed exchangeable and sign-invariant. We then apply this result to the study of persistence probabilities of (symmetric) additive functionals of Markov chains, which can be seen as a natural generalization of integrated random walks.

Persistence problems for additive functionals of one-dimensional Markov processes

In this article, we consider additive functionals $ζ_t = \int_0^t f(X_s)\mathrm{d} s$ of a càdlàg Markov process $(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ on $\mathbb{R}$. Under some general conditions on the process $(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ and on the function $f$, we show that the persistence probabilities verify $\mathbb{P}(ζ_s < z \text{ for all } s\leq t ) \sim \mathcal{V}(z) ς(t) t^{-θ}$ as $t\to\infty$, for some (explicit) $\mathcal{V}(\cdot)$, some slowly varying function $ς(\cdot)$ and some $θ\in (0,1)$. This extends results in the literature, which mostly focused on the case of a self-similar process $(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ (such as Brownian motion or skew-Bessel process) with a homogeneous functional $f$ (namely a pure power, possibly asymmetric). In a nutshell, we are able to deal with processes which are only asymptotically self-similar and functionals which are only asymptotically homogeneous. Our results rely on an excursion decomposition of $(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$, together with a Wiener--Hopf decomposition of an auxiliary (bivariate) Lévy process, with a probabilistic point of view. This provides an interpretation for the asymptotic behavior of the persistence probabilities, and in particular for the exponent $θ$, which we write as $θ= ρβ$, with $β$ the scaling exponent of the local time of $(X_{t})_{t\geq 0}$ at level $0$ and $ρ$ the (asymptotic) positivity parameter of the auxiliary Lévy process.

Stable limit theorems for additive functionals of one-dimensional diffusion processes

We consider a positive recurrent one-dimensional diffusion process with continuous coefficients and we establish stable central limit theorems for a certain type of additive functionals of this diffusion. In other words we find some explicit conditions on the additive functional so that its fluctuations behave like some $α$-stable process in large time for $α\in(0,2]$.
